Abstract

In this paper a novel approach for the experimental measurement of the ablation by melting is presented. The experiments are carried out with a hypersonic shock tunnel. The tested models are made of gallium, which melts at low temperatures, allowing the generation and then the measurement of the ablation profiles within only two milliseconds. By means of an optical visualization, the model surface changes are recorded during the experiment. An image post-processing algorithm computes the ablation profiles. The results for two hemisphere-cone models and one hemisphere-cylinder model in a Mach 4.5 nitrogen flow are presented. It is found that the maximum ablation occurs at an angular position of around 30 degrees off-axis rather than at the stagnation point. This is most likely a consequence of the laminar-turbulent transition on the model forebody.

Abstract

International audience; Floods in cities are a worrying phenomenon as cities concentrate a growing population and activity and are expected to increase in both intensity and frequency in the context of climate change. Flood management provided by public services relies especially on 2D models that do not consider the potential street-building exchanges, considering buildings to be waterproof. A new model is proposed to represent each building as a mass conservation law and an additional source term in the classical 2D shallow water equations. A synthetic test case, with a channel and 200 buildings, shows that the buildings lead to a reduction of both the discharge (30%) and the water depth (18%) peaks in the street and generate a lag time in their time evolution. The interest of the proposed model is highlighted on the modeling of the Richelieu district (Nîmes, France): street-building exchanges impact significantly (up to 0.6 m and 1 m/s) the street hydrodynamics. The water level modifications are generalized in the synthetic case whereas they are more localized in the real-world simulation. Moreover, the model simulates the building water depth allowing for the determination of the maximal level and the submersion duration. These new results pave the way to new information for flood damage analysis and operational management.

Abstract

Classically, in open-channel networks, the flow is numerically approximated by the one-dimensional Saint Venant equations coupled with a junction model. In this study, a comparison between the one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) numerical simulations of subcritical flow in open-channel networks is presented and completely described allowing for a full comprehension of the modeling of water flow. For the 1D, the mathematical model used is the 1D Saint Venant equations to find the solution in branches. For junction, various models based on momentum or energy conservation have been developed to relate the flow variables at the junction. These models are of empirical nature due to certain parameters given by experimental results and moreover they often present a reduced field of validity. In contrast, for the 2D simulation, the junction is discretized into triangular cells and we simply apply the 2D Saint Venant equations, which are solved by a second-order finite-volume method. In order to give an answer to the question of luxury or necessity of the 2D approach, the 1D and 2D numerical results for steady flow are compared to existing experimental data. Abstract

A numerical solution of the two-dimensional Saint Venant equations is presented for the study of the propagation of the floods through the crossroads of the city. The numerical scheme is a Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method (RKDG) with a slope limiter. The work studies the robustness and the stability of the method. The study is organized around three aspects: the prediction of the water depths, the location of the right and oblique hydraulic jumps in the crossing, and especially the distribution of the flow discharges in the downstream branches. The objective of this paper was to use the RKDG method in order to simulate supercritical flow in crossroads and to compare these simulations with experimental results and to show the advantage of this RKDG method compared to a second-order finite-volume method. A good agreement between the proposed method and the experimental data was found. The method is then able to simulate the flow patterns observed experimentally and to predict accurately the water depths, the location of the hydraulic jumps, and the discharge distribution in the downstream branches. International audience; A mixed hybrid finite element method was applied to obtain a numerical approximation of the flow and associated transport equations in unsaturated media. The model was developed under the framework of the European Life Environment project ARTWET, which aims to study new treatment potentials for the mitigation of non-point source pesticide pollution in a constructed wetland. The model formulation used is based on Raviart-Thomas space properties, considering a two-dimensional domain divided into triangular elements. In order to control for the difficulties when convection is the dominant process, a flux limiting tool was introduced, although a slope limiter is generally used in the literature. The suggested flux limiting tool makes it possible to preserve precision and unconditional stability at low and very high Peclet numbers.

Abstract

In open channel networks, flow is usually approximated by the one-dimensional (1D) Saint-Venant equations coupled with an empirical junction model. In this work, a comparison in terms of accuracy and computational cost between a coupled 1D-2D shallow water model and a fully two-dimensional (2D) model is presented. The paper explores the ability of a coupled model to simulate the flow processes during supercritical flows in crossroads. This combination leads to a significant reduction in the computational time, as a 1D approach is used in branches and a 2D approach is employed in selected areas only where detailed flow information is essential. Overall, the numerical results suggest that the coupled model is able to accurately simulate the main flow processes. In particular, hydraulic jumps, recirculation zones, and discharge distribution are reasonably well reproduced and clearly identified. Abstract

This study is interested in the flows at open channel junctions. The one-dimensional models usually used to characterize the hydraulic behaviour of these phenomenon are of empirical nature. The formulations used, often present a reduced field of validity. To overpass this constraint, we use the two-dimensional Saint Venant equations in order to numerically simulate the flows through junctions. An explicit second order finite volume scheme with Roe?s approximate Riemann solver is used to solve these equations, by using a triangular cells, in order to represent with accuracy irregular geometries. The model is verified by comparing the model output with analytical solutions. Two typical examples of dam break problems are presented in this article: the first through a combining junction and the second through a dividing junction.
