In this work we propose the use of soil quality indicators with the aim of assessing the environmental impact of soil bioengineering works. This study was carried out in central Italy where soil bioengineering slope stabilization works were established using chestnut wood. In particular the goal of this study was to determine the occurrence of a wood-effect, that is changes of soil properties due to the presence of decomposing logs in two sites characterized by different time span since works setting up. The presence of the logs did not affect soil physico-chemical properties. Conversely, soil biochemical properties such as soil microbial biomass, basal and cumulative respiration activities as well as microbial indexes, were influenced by the presence of the logs confirming the role of these bioindicators as early predictors of changes occurring in soil. Although a general positive trend was observed for the biochemical properties at both sites with respect to the control soils, significant differences were recorded mainly at the site where works were established six years before soil sampling. Soil bioengineering slope stabilization works establish a positive feed-back which ultimately can benefit plants; in fact the increase in microbial mineralization activity can enhance nutrient cycling and thus promote adequate growth conditions for the plant cuttings used in the wooden-work.

This work was carried out in the experimental area POPFACE (Tuscania, Viterbo), where a poplar short rotation forest (SRF) was treated with 550 ppm of atmospheric CO2 for six years. The experimental plots (Control and FACE) were divided in two halves, one of which was treated with nitrogen fertilization. The general aim of this research was to quantify the impact of the two rotation cycles, the CO2 enrichment and the nitrogen fertilization on: i) soil organic matter fractions more relevant for microbial metabolism; ii) microbial C mineralization activity and iii) the ecosystem capacity to store C in the soil. On soil samples collected from 2000 to 2004, the soil Organic C (TOC), the total extractable C (TEC) and several labile C fractions (MBC, WSC, ExC) were analysed. The microbial mineralization activity was also analysed. In comparison with the previous culture crop, the plantation increased the organic C storage in soil by about 23% in the second rotation cycle. Under elevated CO2, the increase of above- and belowground productivity supported a greater accumulation of labile C in soil, favouring a microbial C immobilization process. Fertilization treatment induced short-term changes in the soil C content, without overall modifications in the second rotation cycle.

Contamination by microplastics (MPs) is a serious problem affecting both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, but despite the large number of papers published in recent years, the impact of microplastics (MPs) on soil is still debated. This work aims to evaluate the effects of different amounts (0, 1, 2 % v/v) of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) microparticles (1-0.25 mm in size) on soil properties over time. Specifically, in a field plot experiment lasting about 2 years, treated and control soils were periodically sampled and analysed for their physical (aggregate stability and distribution), chemical (total N, soluble C and N, available P), and soil biochemical (basal respiration, microbial biomass C, enzyme activities, and fatty acid methyl ester - EL-FAME) properties. In addition, CO 2 fluxes from soil to atmosphere were measured throughout the experiment. The physical and chemical parameters of the treated soils did not differ significantly from the control soil, whereas specific changes occurred in the biochemical characteristics during the experiment, particularly in the soil treated with the higher dose of MPs. In the early period (21 to 46 days after the treatment), some changes in the microbial community structure were observed for the soil treated with 2 % MPs, suggesting the occurrence of stress conditions for the microbial biomass, likely due to nutrient limitation. After 166 g from the start of the experiment, the 2 % MPs-treated soil showed, other than a lower CO 2 flux than the control soil, a reduction of basal respiration together with an increase in actinomycetes and total fungi (both saprophytes and AMF). There was also an increase in C-related enzyme activities one year after treatment with MPs. The present paper introduces soil as a complex system, so a multidisciplinary approach is needed to study not only the composition, abundance, and transport of microplastics (MPs) in terrestrial ecosystems but also soil properties and processes involved in their degradation and/or interaction with soil polyphasic matrix. Areas covered by seminatural grasslands have been in constant decline for decades in Europe. This trend is particularly strong for mountain territories, where such traditional agricultural practices as cattle grazing are no longer economically feasible. This study was conducted in the subalpine pasture of Cinte Tesino (TN, Italy), where local farmers have applied the following different management strategies: shorter and longer grazing durations during the season and a complete abandonment for the last 15 years. We aimed to study how these different management strategies impact the functioning and diversity of vegetation and the chemical and biological characteristics of the soil. Species richness was higher in plots subjected to longer grazing with a prevalence of D. caespitosa in terms of biomass share. A decline in species richness in abandoned plots was accompanied by an increase in the share of other graminoids in collected biomass. A concomitant increase in leaf N concentration and light availability in grazed plots resulted in higher photosynthetic efficiency in some species, as revealed by the δ 13 C of plant tissues. Soils under grazing were characterised by a higher concentration of total and extractable N, almost doubled microbial biomass C and increased extracellular enzymes activity, evidencing nutrient cycling mobilization. While the microbial pool was characterised by lower mineralization rates, C was lost from the soil with 15 years of abandonment. The longer grazing season demonstrated to be the most beneficial, promoting species richness, C accumulation and better soil microbial functioning. A change in soil pH from strongly acidic to moderately acidic with longer grazing is likely one of the important factors adding to the success in the functioning of primary producers and decomposers in this site.

Although arsenic (As) toxicity in soil vary depending on its chemical forms and oxidation states, regulatory limits for this compartment rely on total As content. Conventional methods of total As determination are expensive and time-consuming. The development of predictive techniques might enable a speditive assessment of As contamination in those scenarios, such as thermal spring sites, where exposure to the metalloid poses a threat to human health. The objective of this study was to assess the suitability of Visible Near Infrared spectrophotometry for predicting the total As content in highly calcareous thermal spring soils and the same aim was pursued for those elements (i.e. Al, Fe and Mn) the chemistry of which is tightly connected with that of As. A Partial Least Square approach, including cross-validation and external independent test, was used to relate the concentrations of the target elements to spectral data. The most accurate prediction was found for As with Pearson's coefficient, RMSE, RPD and SEP being equal to 0.94, 69.65, 2.9 and 66.99, respectively. Less accurate predictions were found for Al (r = 0.88; RMSE = 11014; RPD = 1.96; SEP = 11014), Fe (r = 0.93; RMSE = 6921.1; RPD = 2.45; SEP = 6462.4), and Mn (r = 0.92; RMSE = 542.01; RPD = 2.43; SEP = 529.79)., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Three soils, coming from a former mining site and characterized by a different degree of pollution, were analysed in terms of Arsenic (As) content, using three different analytical approaches, and its distribution in various soil fractions. The effect of As on soil microbial biomass (size, respiration and microbial quotients) was also analysed. Total arsenic concentration between soil fractions was significantly different and ranged from 189 to 4357mgkg(-1), indicating a high level of pollution. Soil sequential fractioning showed that more than 60 percent of total As was bound to Fe-Al oxides, suggesting a minor availability and environmental risk regardless the total concentration of As in the sample. On the contrary, water soluble As fraction showed a significant difference among the three samples. The largest water soluble As concentration was found in the sample with intermediate total As amount. As far as microbial biomass is concerned, it was found that bioavailable As negatively impacted microbial metabolism in terms of basal and cumulative respiration, and microbial quotients, suggesting a strong selection within microbial pool., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. We estimated nitrogen (N) use by trees of three poplar species exposed for 3 years to free air CO(2) enrichment (FACE) and determined whether the CO(2) treatment affected the future N availability of the plantation. Trees were harvested at the end of the first 3-year rotation and N concentration and content of woody tissues determined. Nitrogen uptake of fine roots and litter was measured throughout the first crop rotation. The results were related to previously published variations in soil N content during the same period. We estimated retranslocation from green leaves and processes determining N mobilization and immobilization, such as mineralization and nitrification, and N immobilization in litter and microbial biomass. In all species, elevated CO(2) concentration ([CO(2)]) significantly increased nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE; net primary productivity per unit of annual N uptake), decreased N concentration in most plant tissues, but did not significantly change cumulative N uptake by trees over the rotation. Total soil N was depleted more in elevated [CO(2)] than in ambient [CO(2)], although not significantly for all soil layers. The effect of elevated [CO(2)] was usually similar for all species, although differences among species were sometimes significant. During the first 3-year rotation, productivity of the plantation remained high in the elevated [CO(2)] treatment. However, we observed a potential reduction in N availability in response to elevated [CO(2)].

Soil carbon (C) long term storage is influenced by the balance among ecosystem net primary productivity (NPP), the rate of delivery of new organic matter to soil pools and the decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM). The increase of NPP under elevated CO(2) can result in a greater production and higher turnover of fine roots or root exudation and, in turn, in an increase of labile C belowground. The aim of this work was to detect if changes in labile C substrates influenced the organic C storage in soils, verifying (i) whether treatments with elevated CO(2) and N fertilization induced changes in the amount and quality of labile C pools and in microbial C immobilization and (ii) whether these changes provoked modifications in the microbial C mineralization activity, and therefore changes in soil C losses. The effect of elevated CO(2) was a significant increase in both seasons (June and October 2004), of all labile C fractions: microbial biomass C (MBC), K(2)SO(4) extractable C (ExC), and water soluble C (WSC). The C/N ratio of the microbial biomass and of the K(2)SO(4) extractable SOM presented a seasonal fluctuation showing higher values in June, whereas the elevated CO(2) increased significantly the C/N ratio of these fractions independent of the season and the N addition, indicating a lower quality of labile SOM. Microbial respiration was more than doubled in October compared to June, confirming that changes in substrate quality and nutrient availability, occurring in the plantation at the beginning and at the end of the vegetative period, influenced the microbial activity in the bulk soil. Furthermore, the microbial respiration response to N fertilization was dependent on the season, with an opposite effect between June and October. The kinetic parameters calculated according to the first-order equation C(m)=C(0)(1-e(-kt)) were unaffected by elevated CO(2) treatment, except C(0)k and MR(basal), that showed a significant reduction, ascribable to (i) a lower quality of labile pools, and (ii) a more efficient microbial biomass in the use of available substrates. The C surplus found in elevated CO(2) soils was indeed immobilized and used for microbial growth, thus excluding a priming effect mechanism of elevated CO(2) on SOM decomposition.

A high-density plantation of three genotypes of Populus was exposed to an elevated concentration of carbon dioxide ([CO(2)]; 550 micromol mol(-1)) from planting through canopy closure using a free-air CO(2) enrichment (FACE) technique. The FACE treatment stimulated gross primary productivity by 22 and 11% in the second and third years, respectively. Partitioning of extra carbon (C) among C pools of different turnover rates is of critical interest; thus, we calculated net ecosystem productivity (NEP) to determine whether elevated atmospheric [CO(2)] will enhance net plantation C storage capacity. Free-air CO(2) enrichment increased net primary productivity (NPP) of all genotypes by 21% in the second year and by 26% in the third year, mainly because of an increase in the size of C pools with relatively slow turnover rates (i.e., wood). In all genotypes in the FACE treatment, more new soil C was added to the total soil C pool compared with the control treatment. However, more old soil C loss was observed in the FACE treatment compared with the control treatment, possibly due to a priming effect from newly incorporated root litter. FACE did not significantly increase NEP, probably as a result of this priming effect.

This paper investigates the possible contribution of Short Rotation Cultures (SRC) to carbon sequestration in both current and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations ([CO2]). A dense poplar plantation (1 x 1 m) was exposed to a [CO2] of 550 ppm in Central Italy using the free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) technique. Three species of Populus were examined, namely P. alba L., P. nigra L. and P. x euramericana Dode (Guinier). Aboveground woody biomass of trees exposed to elevated [CO2] for three growing seasons increased by 15 to 27%, depending on species. As a result, light-use efficiency increased. Aboveground biomass allocation was unaffected, and belowground biomass also increased under elevated [CO2] conditions, by 22 to 38%. Populus nigra, with total biomass equal to 62.02 and 72.03 Mg ha-1 in ambient and elevated [CO2], respectively, was the most productive species, although its productivity was stimulated least by atmospheric CO2 enrichment. There was greater depletion of inorganic nitrogen from the soil after three growing seasons in elevated [CO2], but no effect of [CO2] on stem wood density, which differed significantly only among species.
