The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial, psychological, and rehabilitative interventions implemented in an Italian psychiatric inpatient facility, with a focus on patients with schizophrenia spectrum versus those with mood disorders.Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted in the psychiatric hospital Villa Maria Pia in Rome, Italy, during 2022. Patients with an established diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum and mood disorder (ICD-9-CM) were assessed on admission (T0) and at the end of treatment (T1), using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF). Interventions involved a multidisciplinary team and included individual and group activities. The t-test for independent samples was used to compare continuous variables between groups and Spearman correlation coefficient to calculate correlations between variables.Results: The study sample consisted of 141 patients, the majority of them being adults (51.3 years ± 12.4) men (F/M= 68/73). Among them, 85 patients (60.3%) actively engaged in psychosocial and rehabilitative interventions and, compared to non-participating individuals, they showed lower functioning and symptoms at discharge (delta GAF was significantly higher among patients who had taken part in the psychosocial activities, t = − 2.095; p = 0.038). Considering the index computed (n of interventions/days of hospitalization), the number of psychosocial activities was positively correlated with the improvement in patients’ functioning in the sample taking part in activities (r = 0.272, p = 0.012), especially with psychotherapy and support groups (r = 0.202, p = 0.017 and r = 0.188, p = 0.025, respectively). Splitting the total sample into schizophrenia-spectrum disorder (N = 37) and mood disorder (N = 48) groups, the positive correlations between GAF improvement and participation in psychosocial activities were confirmed only in the schizophrenia-spectrum group. These correlations were not significant for symptomatology (BPRS) either in the total or the individual group.Conclusion: Evidence from our study suggests that inpatient rehabilitation can be effective and useful for people with severe mental disorders. We tested two summer protocols for oxytetracycline (OTC) administration on beehives to evaluate: toxicity for the bees, residues in honey and presence of genes encoding for OTC antibiotic resistance in bacteria isolated from the gut of adult bees. In July 2020, eighteen healthy colonies were divided into three groups. Two OTC treatment protocols - long and short, were devised, and one group was left untreated. We did not detect any toxicity on adult bees or brood but found OTC residues in the honey of the nest up to seven months after both treatments (210.3±221.2 µg/kg after long protocol; 216.2±238.4 µg/kg after short protocol), even in the untreated group (up to the mean 75.8±173.2 µg/kg). Antibiotic resistance genes were found, even in the untreated group, possibly due to the long exposure to antibiotics. More in-depth studies should be performed to verify how the long-term persistence of antibiotics impacted the beehive during the inactive season.

Let G = (V, E) be a finite undirected graph. An edge subset E′ ⊆ E is a dominating induced matching (d.i.m.) in G if every edge in E is intersected by exactly one edge of E′. The Dominating Induced Matching (DIM) problem asks for the existence of a d.i.m. in G. The DIM problem is 𝕅𝕇-complete even for very restricted graph classes such as planar bipartite graphs with maximum degree 3 but was solved in linear time for P7-free graphs and in polynomial time for P8-free graphs. In this paper, we solve it in polynomial time for P9-free graphs.

Vertical greening systems (VGS) are artificial niches enriching cityscapes with ecosystem services. To accurately define these services, studying various species’ performance within VGS due to differing plant variables, such as Leaf Area Index (LAI), is crucial. This study quantifies the performance of two north-oriented VGS scenarios for microclimate regulation using ENVI_met’s three-dimensional CFD model in Athens, Greece. The first scenario considers a Hedera helix L. monoculture with default plant variables. The second scenario replicates real-lif e temporal and spatial changes of three plant species by modifying ENVI_met database variables, accounting for site specificity. For a typical Mediterranean summer day, the study evaluates the scenarios’ impact on microclimatic conditions and outdoor thermal comfort, considering indices like mean radiant temperature (MRT) and universal thermal climate index (UTCI) at pedestrian level, through simulations and statistical analysis. Results show minimal impact of the second scenario on microclimatic conditions and outdoor thermal comfort compared to the default scenario. The research highlights key aspects of modeling optimization and emphasizes the necessity of thorough analysis of contextual specifics and climatic data for effective VGS incorporation and optimal microclimate performance.

The immunologic cascade mediated by the interleukin (IL)-17 pathway plays a critically important role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. The IL-17 effectors (IL-17A, IL-17C, IL-17E, and IL17F) act on keratinocytes, endothelial cells, and immune cells to stimulate epidermal hyperplasia and the pro-inflammatory feed-forward cycle seen within plaque psoriasis. The IL-17 pathway is also hypothesized to modulate the inflammatory responses linking comorbid systemic diseases with psoriasis. Furthermore, the robust clinical response seen with current and emerging therapies targeting IL-17 emphasizes the importance of the IL-17 cytokines in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.Keywords: IL-17, plaque psoriasis, pathogenesis, biologics, immune pathway

Given that there now exists 11 FDA approved biologic options available for psoriasis, with more in the pipeline, the therapeutic armamentarium has been greatly enhanced. However, the fact that there are so many available options has also caused confusion for providers. Therefore, this manuscript deliberately focuses on the most clinically useful facts (such as efficacy and safety data) about each and every FDA approved biologic agent (including pipeline agents) for psoriasis. Moreover, among the clinically relevant facts, this manuscript purposely emphasizes the unique merits and demerits of each agent to make it easier for the provider to select which one of these many options is the best for the particular patient on hand. We investigated infrared reflectivity of undoped and Tungsten (W) doped Vanadium dioxide (VO2) films at varying temperatures. Undoped VO2 exhibited a clear phase transition at 100°C, achieving near 0% reflectivity, or perfect light absorption. As W doping concentration increased, the phase-transition temperature decreased, maintaining the zero-reflectivity condition. Only a 0.75% W doping enabled room temperature perfect absorption without heating the film.

Digital ulcers (DUs) are common in SSc patients, and represent a major burden for the patients. The management of DUs in systemic sclerosis is difficult, because it needs a multimodal therapeutic approach, as local treatment alone is usually insufficient and also systemic treatment with vasoactive drugs and modification of the lifestyle are usually required for healing of the wounds. In this review, we describe the optimal management of DUs according to recent literature and our clinical practice for systemic and local treatment of chronic digital wounds in SSc patients.Keywords: systemic sclerosis, wound, digital ulcers, dressings

BackgroundEmotional exhaustion (EE) in health care workers is common and consequentially linked to lower quality of care. Effective interventions to address EE are urgently needed. ObjectiveThis randomized single-exposure trial examined the efficacy of a gratitude letter–writing intervention for improving health care workers’ well-being. MethodsA total of 1575 health care workers were randomly assigned to one of two gratitude letter–writing prompts (self- vs other focused) to assess differential efficacy. Assessments of EE, subjective happiness, work-life balance, and tool engagement were collected at baseline and 1-week post intervention. Participants received their EE score at baseline and quartile benchmarking scores. Paired-samples t tests, independent t tests, and correlations explored the efficacy of the intervention. Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count software assessed the linguistic content of the gratitude letters and associations with well-being. ResultsParticipants in both conditions showed significant improvements in EE, happiness, and work-life balance between the intervention and 1-week follow-up (P.05). ConclusionsThis single-exposure gratitude letter–writing intervention appears to be a promising low-cost, brief, and meaningful tool to improve the well-being of health care workers.

Giovanni di Dio, Florence, Italy Objective: To propose appropriate statements that drive the choice of biologic therapies in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), factoring in their impact on the following issues: anti-drug antibody (ADAb) formation, suspicion and management of infections, lupus-like syndrome (LLS), effects on bone mass and sexual sphere, and relationship between RA and periodontal disease (PD). Methods: An overview of existing evidence was undertaken by an expert panel on behalf of the Italian board for the TAilored BIOlogic therapy (ITABIO). Data were extracted from controlled trials, national registries, national health care databases, post-marketing surveys, and, when required by the paucity of controlled studies, from open-label clinical series. Anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) and non-anti-TNF-targeted biologics approved for RA were investigated. Results: ADAb formation is chiefly associated with anti-TNFs, and it is reduced by combination therapy with methotrexate. To date, ADAb titration is not advisable for clinical practice, and, in case of anti-TNF secondary failure, a non-anti-TNF biologic is indicated. LLS is observed in anti-TNF receivers and, in most cases, resolves without anti-TNF withdrawal. A non-anti-TNF biologic is advisable in patients experiencing LLS. Non-anti-TNFs demonstrated a low or absent infection risk and are preferable in patients with comorbidities. Due to their positive effects on bone mass, anti-TNFs are indicated in women at osteoporosis risk, whereas non-anti-TNF have been poorly investigated. The emerging evidence of the relationship between RA and PD and the effects on anti-TNF efficacy should lead clinicians to consider the periodontal status in RA patients. Anti-TNFs may exert a positive effect on fertility and sexuality, and clinicians should explore these aspects in RA patients. Conclusion: The optimization of biologic therapies by taking into proper account the above issues would improve patient outcomes. With continuously improving signal-to-noise ratios, a statistically sound analysis of quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) spectra requires to fit increasingly complex models which poses several challenges. Simultaneous fits of the spectra for all recorded values of the momentum transfer become a standard approach. Spectrometers at spallation sources can have a complicated non-Gaussian resolution function which has to be described most accurately. At the same time, to speed up the fitting, an analytical convolution with this resolution function is of interest. Here, we discuss basic concepts to efficient approaches for fits of QENS spectra based on standard MATLAB and Python fit algorithms. We illustrate the fits with example data from IN16B, BASIS, and BATS.

Drinking water reservoirs are often made of cementitious materials. The inorganic mineral phases exhibit a similar chemical composition as the natural rocks. This enables the concrete in contact with drinking water to be a safe material with respect to the human health. The carbonate or the free-CO2 content of the water control the extent of the concrete deterioration. To increase the durability, cement-based mortars are applied as a coating. In this work, the damage on site and in laboratory, such as bubbles, cracks and microcracks formation, leaching effects and detachments of three cement-based coatings were investigated. The coating systems exhibited conventional mechanical parameters, such as the compressive and flexural strength, but a different behavior with respect to the cracks formation. This fact was dependent from the coating thickness, application features, water content, superplasticizer dosage, environment parameters and mortar quality. The damage was less related to the mechanical properties, in particular the compression strength. The coatings generally exhibited a dense compact microstructure. The addition of superplasticizers promoted the segregation of the aggregates. The fine particles were concentrated along the surface layers, which in turn, were more susceptible to the environmental changes. The coatings adhesion strength was always above 2 N/mm2 for the coatings tested in laboratory. A reliable and acceptable adhesion that increased the durability.
