Search

This paper presents a search for high redshift galaxies from the Euclid Early Release Observations program "Magnifying Lens." The 1.5 deg$^2$ area covered by the twin Abell lensing cluster fields is comparable in size to the few other deep near-infrared surveys such as COSMOS, and so provides an opportunity to significantly increase known samples of rare UV-bright galaxies at $z\approx6-8$ ($M_{\rm UV}\lesssim-22$). Beyond their still uncertain role in reionisation, these UV-bright galaxies are ideal laboratories from which to study galaxy formation and constrain the bright-end of the UV luminosity function. Of the 501994 sources detected from a combined $Y_{\rm E}$, $J_{\rm E}$, and $H_{\rm E}$ NISP detection image, 168 do not have any appreciable VIS/$I_{\rm E}$ flux. These objects span a range in spectral colours, separated into two classes: 139 extremely red sources; and 29 Lyman-break galaxy candidates. Best-fit redshifts and spectral templates suggest the former is composed of both $z\gtrsim5$ dusty star-forming galaxies and $z\approx1-3$ quiescent systems. The latter is composed of more homogeneous Lyman break galaxies at $z\approx6-8$. In both cases, contamination by L- and T-type dwarfs cannot be ruled out with Euclid images alone. Additional contamination from instrumental persistence is investigated using a novel time series analysis. We present the first analysis of the Euclid Early Release Observations (ERO) program that targets fields around two lensing clusters, Abell 2390 and Abell 2764. We use VIS and NISP imaging to produce photometric catalogs for a total of $\sim 500\,000$ objects. The imaging data reach a $5\,\sigma$ typical depth in the range 25.1-25.4 AB in the NISP bands, and 27.1-27.3 AB in the VIS band. Using the Lyman-break method in combination with photometric redshifts, we identify $30$ Lyman-break galaxy (LBG) candidates at $z>6$ and 139 extremely red sources (ERSs), most likely at lower redshift. The deeper VIS imaging compared to NISP means we can routinely identify high-redshift Lyman breaks of the order of $3$ magnitudes, which reduces contamination by brown dwarf stars and low-redshift galaxies. Spectroscopic follow-up campaigns of such bright sources will help constrain both the bright end of the ultraviolet galaxy luminosity function and the quasar luminosity function at $z>6$, and constrain the physical nature of these objects. Additionally, we have performed a combined strong lensing and weak lensing analysis of A2390, and demonstrate how Euclid will contribute to better constraining the virial mass of galaxy clusters. From these data, we also identify optical and near-infrared counterparts of known $z>0.6$ clusters, which exhibit strong lensing features, establishing the ability of Euclid to characterize high-redshift clusters. Finally, we provide a glimpse of Euclid's ability to map the intracluster light out to larger radii than current facilities, enabling a better understanding of the cluster assembly history and mapping of the dark matter distribution. The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Several tentative associations between high-energy neutrinos and astrophysical sources have been recently reported, but a conclusive identification of these potential neutrino emitters remains challenging. We explore the use of Monte Carlo simulations of source populations to gain deeper insight into the physical implications of proposed individual source--neutrino associations. In particular, we focus on the IC170922A--TXS~0506+056 observation. Assuming a null model, we find a 7.6\% chance of mistakenly identifying coincidences between $\gamma$-ray flares from blazars and neutrino alerts in 10-year surveys. We confirm that a blazar--neutrino connection based on the $\gamma$-ray flux is required to find a low chance coincidence probability and, therefore, a significant IC170922A--TXS~0506+056 association. We then assume this blazar--neutrino connection for the whole population and find that the ratio of neutrino to $\gamma$-ray fluxes must be $\lesssim 10^{-2}$ in order not to overproduce the total number of neutrino alerts seen by IceCube. For the IC170922A--TXS~0506+056 association to make sense, we must either accept this low flux ratio or suppose that only some rare sub-population of blazars is capable of high-energy neutrino production. For example, if we consider neutrino production only in blazar flares, we expect the flux ratio of between $10^{-3}$ and $10^{-1}$ to be consistent with a single coincident observation of a neutrino alert and flaring $\gamma$-ray blazar. These constraints should be interpreted in the context of the likelihood models used to find the IC170922A--TXS~0506+056 association, which assumes a fixed power-law neutrino spectrum of $E^{-2.13}$ for all blazars., Comment: Accepted version

We present the results of a new, deeper, and complete search for high-redshift $6.56.5$ quasars in this field. Additional observations of the other 17 candidates, primarily DESI Legacy Survey photometry and ESO FORS2 spectroscopy, confirm that none is a quasar. This is the first complete sample from the VIKING survey, and we provide the computed selection function. We include a detailed comparison of the BMC method against two other selection methods: colour cuts and minimum-$\chi^2$ SED fitting. We find that: i) BMC produces eight times fewer false positives than colour cuts, while also reaching 0.3 mag. deeper, ii) the minimum-$\chi^2$ SED fitting method is extremely efficient but reaches 0.7 mag. less deep than the BMC method, and selects only one of the four known quasars. We show that BMC candidates, rejected because their photometric SEDs have high $\chi^2$ values, include bright examples of galaxies with very strong [OIII]$\lambda\lambda$4959,5007 emission in the $Y$ band, identified in fainter surveys by Matsuoka et al. This is a potential contaminant population in Euclid searches for faint $z>7$ quasars, not previously accounted for, and that requires better characterisation., Comment: Accepted for MNRAS

We provide predictions of the yield of $78$ may be selected from Euclid $OYJH$ photometry alone, but selection over the redshift interval $77.5$ should be found in the DR1 data release, expected in 2024. It will be possible to determine the bright-end slope of the QLF, $7

We introduce PHI, a fully Bayesian Markov-chain Monte Carlo algorithm designed for the structural decomposition of galaxy images. PHI uses a triple layer approach to effectively and efficiently explore the complex parameter space. Combining this with the use of priors to prevent nonphysical models, PHI offers a number of significant advantages for estimating surface brightness profile parameters over traditional optimisation algorithms. We apply PHI to a sample of synthetic galaxies with SDSS-like image properties to investigate the effect of galaxy properties on our ability to recover unbiased and well constrained structural parameters. In two-component bulge+disc galaxies we find that the bulge structural parameters are recovered less well than those of the disc, particularly when the bulge contributes a lower fraction to the luminosity, or is barely resolved with respect to the pixel scale or PSF. There are few systematic biases, apart from for bulge+disc galaxies with large bulge Sersic parameter, n. On application to SDSS images, we find good agreement with other codes, when run on the same images with the same masks, weights, and PSF. Again, we find that bulge parameters are the most difficult to constrain robustly. Finally, we explore the use of a Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) method for deciding whether a galaxy has one- or two-components., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures. We present a 30h integration Very Large Telescope X-shooter spectrum of the Lyman series forest towards the $z = 7.084$ quasar ULAS J1120+0641. The only detected transmission at ${\rm S/N}>5$ is confined to seven narrow spikes in the Ly$\alpha$ forest, over the redshift range $5.858 5.5$. The data nevertheless provide only a weak limit on the volume-weighted hydrogen intergalactic (IGM) neutral fraction at $z\sim 6.5$, $x_{{\rm HI}} > 10^{-4}$, similar to limits at redshift $z\sim6$ from less distant quasars. The new observations cannot extend measurements of the neutral fraction of the IGM to higher values because absorption in the Ly$\alpha$ forest is already saturated near $z\sim6$. We present new observations of the highest-redshift quasar known, ULAS J1120+0641, redshift $z=7.084$, obtained in the optical, at near-, mid-, and far-infrared wavelengths, and in the sub-mm. We combine these results with published X-ray and radio observations to create the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED), with the goals of measuring the bolometric luminosity $L_{\rm bol}$, and quantifying the respective contributions from the AGN and star formation. We find three components are needed to fit the data over the wavelength range $0.12-1000\,\mu$m: the unobscured quasar accretion disk and broad-line region, a dusty clumpy AGN torus, and a cool 47K modified black body to characterise star formation. Despite the low signal-to-noise ratio of the new long-wavelength data, the normalisation of any dusty torus model is constrained within $\pm40\%$. We measure a bolometric luminosity $L_{\rm bol}=2.6\pm0.6\times10^{47}\,$erg$\,$s$^{-1}=6.7 \pm 1.6\times10^{13}L_{\odot}$, to which the three components contribute $31\%,32\%,3\%$, respectively, with the remainder provided by the extreme UV $<0.12\,\mu$m. We tabulate the best-fit model SED. We use local scaling relations to estimate a star formation rate (SFR) in the range $60-270\,{\rm M}_\odot$/yr from the [C$\,{\scriptsize \rm II}$] line luminosity and the $158\,\mu$m continuum luminosity. An analysis of the equivalent widths of the [C$\,{\scriptsize \rm II}$] line in a sample of $z>5.7$ quasars suggests that these indicators are promising tools for estimating the SFR in high-redshift quasars in general. At the time observed the black hole was growing in mass more than 100 times faster than the stellar bulge, relative to the mass ratio measured in the local universe, i.e. compared to ${M_{\rm BH}}/{M_{\rm bulge}} \simeq 1.4\times10^{-3}$, for ULAS J1120+0641 we measure ${\dot{M}_{\rm BH}}/{\dot{M}_{\rm bulge}} \simeq 0.2$., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 10 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables

We present the analysis of optical and near-infrared spectra of the only four $z>6.5$ quasars known to date, discovered in the UKIDSS-LAS and VISTA-VIKING surveys. Our data-set consists of new VLT/X-Shooter and Magellan/FIRE observations. These are the best optical/NIR spectroscopic data that are likely to be obtained for the $z>6.5$ sample using current $6$ - $10$ m facilities. We estimate the black hole mass, the Eddington ratio, and the SiIV/CIV, CIII]/CIV, and FeII/MgII emission-line flux ratios. We perform spectral modeling using a procedure that allows us to derive a probability distribution for the continuum components and to obtain the quasar properties weighted upon the underlying distribution of continuum models. The $z>6.5$ quasars show the same emission properties as their counterparts at lower redshifts. The $z>6.5$ quasars host black holes with masses of $\sim 10^9$ M$_{\odot}$ that are accreting close to the Eddington luminosity ($\langle{\rm log} (L_{\rm Bol}/L_{\rm Edd})\rangle= -0.4\pm0.2$), in agreement with what has been observed for a sample of $4.0

We present X-ray imaging and spectroscopy of the redshift z=7.084 radio-quiet quasar ULAS J112001.48+064124.3 obtained with Chandra and XMM-Newton. The quasar is detected as a point source with both observatories. The Chandra observation provides a precise position, confirming the association of the X-ray source and the quasar, while a sufficient number of photons is detected in the XMM-Newton observation to yield a meaningful X-ray spectrum. In the XMM-Newton observation the quasar has a 2-10 keV luminosity of 4.7+-0.9 times 10^44 erg/s and a spectral slope alpha = 1.6+0.4/-0.3 (where f_nu is proportional to nu^-alpha). The quasar appears to have dimmed in the 15 months between the two observations, with a 2-10 keV luminosity of $1.8+1.0/-0.7 times 10^45 erg/s during the Chandra observation. We derive optical to X-ray spectral slopes alpha_OX of 1.76+-0.07 and 1.54+0.09/-0.08 at the times of the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations respectively, consistent with the range of alpha_OX found in other quasars of comparable ultraviolet luminosity. The very soft X-ray spectrum suggests that the quasar is accreting above the Eddington rate, L/L_Edd = 5+15/-4, compared to L/L_Edd = 1.2+0.6/-0.5 derived from the rest-frame ultraviolet. Super-Eddington accretion would help to reduce the discrepancy between the age of the quasar implied by the small size of the ionized near zone in which it sits (<10^7 years), and the characteristic e-folding time (2.5 times 10^7 years if L/L_Edd=2). Such super-Eddington accretion would also alleviate the challenging constraints on the seed black hole mass provided that the quasar has been rapidly accreting throughout its history. The remnant of an individual population III star is a plausible progenitor if an average L/L_Edd>1.46 has been maintained over the quasar's lifetime., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We present new observational determination of the evolution of the rest-frame 70 and 160 micron and total infrared (TIR) galaxy luminosity functions (LFs) using 70 micron data from the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey (SWIRE). The LFs were constructed for sources with spectroscopic redshifts only in the XMM-LSS and Lockman Hole fields from the SWIRE photometric redshift catalogue. Using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer, we report the detection of the 158 micron [CII] emission line and underlying dust continuum in the host galaxy of the quasar ULAS J112001.48+064124.3 (hereafter J1120+0641) at z=7.0842+/-0.0004. This is the highest redshift detection of the [CII] line to date, and allows us to put first constraints on the physical properties of the host galaxy. The [CII] line luminosity is (1.2+/-0.2)x10^9 Lsun, which is a factor ~4 lower than observed in a luminous quasar at z=6.42 (SDSS J1148+5251). The underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum has a flux density of 0.61+/-0.16 mJy, similar to the average flux density of z~6 quasars that were not individually detected in the rest-frame FIR. Assuming the FIR luminosity of L_FIR = 5.8x10^11-1.8x10^12 Lsun is mainly powered by star-formation, we derive a star-formation rate in the range 160-440 Msun/yr and a total dust mass in the host galaxy of 6.7x10^7-5.7x10^8 Msun (both numbers have significant uncertainties given the unknown nature of dust at these redshifts). The [CII] line width of sigma_V=100+/-15 km/s is among the smallest observed when compared to the molecular line widths detected in z~6 quasars. Both the [CII] and dust continuum emission are spatially unresolved at the current angular resolution of 2.0x1.7 arcsec^2 (corresponding to 10x9 kpc^2 at the redshift of J1120+0641)., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Context: The study of variations in total solar irradiance (TSI) is important for understanding how the Sun affects the Earth's climate. Aims: Full-disk continuum images and magnetograms are now available for three full solar cycles. We investigate how modelled TSI compares with direct observations by building a consistent modelled TSI dataset. The model, based only on changes in the photospheric magnetic flux can then be tested on rotational, cyclical and secular timescales. Methods: We use Kitt Peak and SoHO/MDI continuum images and magnetograms in the SATIRE-S model to reconstruct TSI over cycles 21-23. To maximise independence from TSI composites, SORCE/TIM TSI data are used to fix the one free parameter of the model. We compare and combine the separate data sources for the model to estimate an uncertainty on the reconstruction and prevent any additional free parameters entering the model. Results: The reconstruction supports the PMOD composite as being the best historical record of TSI observations, although on timescales of the solar rotation the IRMB composite provides somewhat better agreement. Further to this, the model is able to account for 92% of TSI variations from 1978 to 2009 in the PMOD composite and over 96% during cycle 23. The reconstruction also displays an inter-cycle, secular decline of 0.20 (+0.12 / -0.09) Wm-2 between cycle 23 minima, in agreement with the PMOD composite. Conclusions: SATIRE-S is able to recreate TSI observations on all timescales of a day and longer over 31 years from 1978. This is strong evidence that changes in photospheric magnetic flux alone are responsible for almost all solar irradiance variations over the last three solar cycles., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

We report the discovery of 47 new T dwarfs in the Fourth Data Release (DR4) from the Large Area Survey (LAS) of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey with spectral types ranging from T0 to T8.5. These bring the total sample of LAS T dwarfs to 80 as of DR4. In assigning spectral types to our objects we have identified 8 new spectrally peculiar objects, and divide 7 of them into two classes. H2O-H-early have a H2O-H index that differs with the H2O-J index by at least 2 sub-types. CH4-J-early have a CH4-J index that disagrees with the H20-J index by at least 2 subtypes. We have ruled out binarity as a sole explanation for both types of peculiarity, and suggest that they may represent hitherto unrecognised tracers of composition and/or gravity. Clear trends in z'(AB)-J and Y-J are apparent for our sample, consistent with weakening absorption in the red wing of the KI line at 0.77microns with decreasing effective temperature. We have used our sample to estimate space densities for T6-T9 dwarfs. By comparing our sample to Monte-Carlo simulations of field T dwarfs for various mass functions of the form phi(M) \propto M^-alpha, we have placed weak constraints on the form of the field mass function. Our analysis suggests that the substellar mass function is declining at lower masses, with negative values of alpha preferred. Aims: We reanalyse optical spectra of the z=6.7 gamma-ray burst GRB 080913, adding hitherto unpublished spectra, in order to reassess the measurement of the neutral fraction of the IGM at high redshifts. Methods: In the data reduction we take particular care to minimise systematic errors in the sky subtraction, which are evident in the published spectrum, and compromise the analysis. The final combined spectrum has a higher S/N than the previously published spectrum by a factor of 1.3. Results: We find a single significant absorption line redward of the Ly-alpha continuum break, which we identify with the SII+SiII blend (rest wavelength of 0.1260 micron), at z=6.733. The sharp spectral break at Ly-alpha implies a comparatively low total column density of neutral hydrogen along the line of sight, log [N(HI)/cm^-2] < 20. We model the absorption with a host-galaxy DLA, surrounded by an ionised region of unknown size r, within the IGM of neutral fraction, x(HI). Despite knowing the source redshift, and the improved S/N of the spectrum, when fitting only over wavelengths redward of Ly-alpha, no useful constraints on x(HI) can be obtained. We consider the possibility of including the ionised region, blueward of Ly-alpha, in constraining the fit. For the optimistic assumption that the ionised region is transparent, tau_{GP} << 1, we find that the region is of small size r < 2 proper Mpc, and we obtain an upper limit to the neutral fraction of the IGM at z=6.7 of x(HI) < 0.73., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, A&A accepted

Optical and near-infrared (NIR) spectra are presented for ULAS J131911.29+095951.4 (hereafter ULAS J1319+0950), a new redshift z = 6.127 +/- 0.004 quasar discovered in the Third Data Release (DR3) of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The source has Y_Vega = 19.10 +/- 0.03, corresponding to M_1450,AB = -27.12, which is comparable to the absolute magnitudes of the z ~= 6 quasars discovered in the SDSS. ULAS J1319+0950 was, in fact, registered by SDSS as a faint source with z_AB = 20.1 +/- 0.1, just below the signal--to--noise ratio limit of the SDSS high-redshift quasar survey. The faint z-band magnitude is a consequence of the weak Ly alpha/N V emission line, which has a rest-frame equivalent width of only ~20 A and provides only a small boost to the z-band flux. Nevertheless, there is no evidence from this UKIDSS-based search for a significant population of high-redshift quasars with weak emission lines. The Ly alpha optical depth to ULAS J1319+0950 is consistent with that measured towards similarly distant SDSS quasars, implying that results from optical- and NIR-selected quasars may be combined. Also presented is a new NIR-spectrum of the previously discovered UKIDSS quasar ULAS J020332.38+001229.2, which reveals the object to be a broad absorption line quasar. The new spectrum shows that the emission line previously identified as Ly alpha is actually N V, leading to a revised redshift of z = 5.72, rather than z = 5.86 as previously estimated., Comment: A&A in press; 8 pages, 7 figures; author list corrected

We present the discovery of fifteen new T2.5-T7.5 dwarfs (with estimated distances between ~24-93pc, identified in the first three main data releases of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey. This brings the total number of T dwarfs discovered in the Large Area Survey (to date) to 28. These discoveries are confirmed by near infrared spectroscopy, from which we derive spectral types on the unified scheme of Burgasser et al. (2006). Seven of the new T dwarfs have spectral types of T2.5-T4.5, five have spectral types of T5-T5.5, one is a T6.5p, and two are T7-7.5. We assess spectral morphology and colours to identify T dwarfs in our sample that may have non-typical physical properties (by comparison to solar neighbourhood populations). The colours of the full sample of LAS T dwarfs show a possible trend to bluer Y-J with decreasing effective temperature beyond T8. By accounting for the main sources of incompleteness (selection, follow-up and spatial) as well as the effects of unresolved binarity and Malmquist bias, we estimate that there are 17+-4 >=T4 dwarfs in the J<=19 volume of the LAS second data release. Comparing this to theoretical predictions is most consistent with a sub-stellar mass function exponent alpha between -1.0 and 0. This is consistent with the latest 2MASS/SDSS constraint (which is based on lower number statistics), and is significantly lower than the alpha~1.0 suggested by L dwarf field populations, possibly a result of the lower mass range probed by the T dwarf class., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We report the discovery of three very late T dwarfs in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Third Data Release: ULAS J101721.40+011817.9 (ULAS1017), ULAS J123828.51+095351.3 (ULAS1238) and ULAS J133553.45+113005.2 (ULAS1335).We detail optical and near-infrared photometry for all three sources, and mid-infrared photometry for ULAS1335. We use near-infrared spectra of each source to assign spectral types T8p (ULAS1017), T8.5 (ULAS1228) and T9 (ULAS1335) to these objects. We estimate that ULAS1017 has 750 < Teff < 850K, and 5.0 < log g < 5.5, assuming solar metallicity, an age of 1.6-15 Gyr, a mass of 33-70 MJ and lies at a distance of 31-54 pc. We extend the unified scheme of Burgasser et al. (2006) to the type T9 and suggest the inclusion of the WJ index to replace the now saturated J-band indices. ULAS1335 is the same spectral type as ULAS J003402.77-005206.7 and CFBDS J005910.90-011401.3. Comparison of model spectra with that of ULAS1335 suggest a temperature below 600K. We find ULAS1335 to be extremely red in near to mid-infrared colours, with H-[4.49]=4.34+/-0.04. This is the reddest near to mid-infrared colour yet observed for a T dwarf, which supports Teff < 600K, and we estimate Teff ~550-600K for ULAS1335. We estimate that ULAS1335 has an age of 0.6-5.3 Gyr, a mass of 15-31 MJ and lies at a distance of 8-12 pc., Comment: MNRAS accepted. 17 pages, 15 figures. Abstract abridged. We repeat the directional spherical real Morlet wavelet analysis, used to detect non-Gaussianity in the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 1-year and 3-year data (McEwen et al. 2005, 2006a), on the WMAP 5-year data. The non-Gaussian signal detected previously is present in the 5-year data at a slightly increased statistical significance of approximately 99%. Localised regions that contribute most strongly to the non-Gaussian signal are found to be very similar to those detected in the previous releases of the WMAP data. (abridged) We report the discovery of a very cool brown dwarf, ULAS J003402.77-005206.7 (ULAS J0034-00), identified in UKIDSS DR1. We provide optical, near-infrared, and mid-infrared photometry of the source, and two near-infrared spectra. Comparing the spectral energy distribution of ULAS J0034-00 to that of the T8 brown dwarf 2MASS J0415-09, the latest-type and coolest well-studied brown dwarf to date, with Teff~750 K, we find evidence that ULAS J0034-00 is significantly cooler. First, the measured values of the near-infrared absorption spectral indices imply a later classification, of T8.5. We present eight new T4.5-T7.5 dwarfs identified in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) Data Release 1 (DR1). In addition we have recovered the T4.5 dwarf SDSS J020742.91+000056.2 and the T8.5 dwarf ULAS J003402.77-005206.7. Photometric candidates were picked up in two-colour diagrams over 190 square degrees (DR1) and selected in at least two filters. All candidates exhibit near-infrared spectra with strong methane and water absorption bands characteristic of T dwarfs and the derived spectral types follow the unified scheme of Burgasser et al. (2006). We have found 6 new T4.5-T5.5 dwarfs, one T7 dwarf, one T7.5 dwarf, and recovered a T4.5 dwarf and a T8.5 dwarf. We provide distance estimates which lie in the 15-85 pc range; the T7.5 and T8.5 dwarfs are probably within 25 pc of the Sun. The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) is a set of five large near-infrared surveys, covering a complementary range of areas, depths, and Galactic latitudes. The UKIDSS Second Data Release (DR2) includes the First Data Release (DR1), with minor improvements, plus new data for the LAS, GPS, GCS, and DXS, from observations made over 2006 May through July (when the UDS was unobservable). DR2 was staged in two parts. The first part excluded the GPS, and took place on 2007 March 1. The GPS was released on 2007 April 12. DR2 includes 282 sq. degs of multicolour data to (Vega) K=18, complete in the full YJHK set for the LAS, 57 sq. degs in the ZYJHK set for the GCS, and 236 sq. degs in the JHK set for the GPS. DR2 includes nearly 7 sq. degs of deep JK data (DXS, UDS) to an average depth K=21. In addition the release includes a comparable quantity of data where coverage of the filter set for any survey is incomplete. We document changes that have occurred since DR1 to the pipeline, calibration, and archive procedures. The two most noteworthy changes are presentation of the data in a single database (compared to two previously), and provision of additional error flags for detected sources, flagging potentially spurious artifacts, corrupted data and suspected cross-talk sources. We present the initial results from our search for high redshift, z > 6, quasars using near infrared data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS). Our analysis of 106 deg^2 of sky from Data Release 1 (DR1) has resulted in the discovery of ULAS J020332.38+001229.2, a luminous (J_AB=20.0, J_Vega=19.1, M_1450=-26.2) quasar at z=5.86. Following candidate selection from the combined IR and optical catalogue data and stacking of multiple epoch Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, we have obtained optical spectroscopy for the only two z > 6 quasar candidates. The VLT FORS2 spectrum of ULAS J020332.38+001229.2 shows broad Ly alpha + NV1240 emission at ~8350 A and an abrupt continuum break due to absorption by the Ly alpha forest. The quasar is not present in the SDSS DR5 catalogue and the continuum spectral index of alpha=-1.4 (F_nu nu^alpha) is redder than a composite of SDSS quasars at similar redshifts (alpha=-0.5). The discovery of one z~6 quasar in ~100 deg^2 in a complete sample within our selection criteria down to a median depth of Y_AB=20.4 (7 sigma) is consistent with existing SDSS results. The First Data Release (DR1) of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) took place on 2006 July 21. UKIDSS is a set of five large near-infrared surveys, covering a complementary range of areas, depths, and Galactic latitudes. DR1 is the first large release of survey-quality data from UKIDSS and includes 320 sq degs of multicolour data to (Vega) K=18, complete (depending on the survey) in three to five bands from the set ZYJHK, together with 4 sq degs of deep JK data to an average depth K=21. In addition the release includes a similar quantity of data with incomplete filter coverage. In JHK, in regions of low extinction, the photometric uniformity of the calibration is better than 0.02 mag. in each band. The accuracy of the calibration in ZY remains to be quantified, and the same is true of JHK in regions of high extinction. The median image FWHM across the dataset is 0.82 arcsec. We describe changes since the Early Data Release in the implementation, pipeline and calibration, quality control, and archive procedures. We provide maps of the areas surveyed, and summarise the contents of each of the five surveys in terms of filters, areas, and depths. We repeat the directional spherical real Morlet wavelet analysis used to detect non-Gaussianity in the WMAP 1-year data (McEwen et al. 2005a), on the WMAP 3-year data. The non-Gaussian signal previously detected is indeed present in the 3-year data, although the significance of the detection is reduced. Using our most conservative method for constructing significance measures, we find the significance of the detection of non-Gaussianity drops from 98.3+/-0.4% to 94.9+/-0.7%; the significance drops from 99.3+/-0.3% to 97.2+/-0.5% using a method based on the $\chi^2$ statistic. The wavelet analysis allows us to localise most likely sources of non-Gaussianity on the sky. We detect very similar localised regions in the WMAP 1-year and 3-year data, although the regions extracted appear more pronounced in the 3-year data. Many of the current anomalies reported in the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 1-year data disappear after `correcting' for the best-fit embedded Bianchi type VII_h component (Jaffe et al. 2005), albeit assuming no dark energy component. We investigate the effect of this Bianchi correction on the detections of non-Gaussianity in the WMAP data that we previously made using directional spherical wavelets (McEwen et al. 2005a). As previously discovered by Jaffe et al. (2005), the deviations from Gaussianity in the kurtosis of spherical Mexican hat wavelet coefficients are eliminated once the data is corrected for the Bianchi component. This is due to the reduction of the cold spot at Galactic coordinates (l,b)=(209^\circ,-57\circ), which Cruz et al. (2005) claim to be the source of non-Gaussianity introduced in the kurtosis. Our previous detections of non-Gaussianity observed in the skewness of spherical wavelet coefficients are not reduced by the Bianchi correction. Indeed, the most significant detection of non-Gaussianity made with the spherical real Morlet wavelet at a significant level of 98.4% remains (using a very conservative method to estimate the significance). We describe the construction of a spherical wavelet analysis through the inverse stereographic projection of the Euclidean planar wavelet framework, introduced originally by Antoine and Vandergheynst and developed further by Wiaux et al. Fast algorithms for performing the directional continuous wavelet analysis on the unit sphere are presented. The fast directional algorithm, based on the fast spherical convolution algorithm developed by Wandelt and Gorski, provides a saving of O(sqrt(Npix)) over a direct quadrature implementation for Npix pixels on the sphere, and allows one to perform a directional spherical wavelet analysis of a 10^6 pixel map on a personal computer., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, replaced to match version accepted by IEEE Trans. A fast algorithm for Antoine and Vandergheynst's (1998) directional continuous spherical wavelet transform (CSWT) is presented. Computational requirements are reduced by a factor of O(\sqrt{N}), when N is the number of pixels on the sphere. The spherical Mexican hat wavelet Gaussianity analysis of the WMAP 1-year data performed by Vielva et al. (2003) is reproduced and confirmed using the fast CSWT. A directional spherical wavelet analysis is performed to examine the Gaussianity of the WMAP 1-year data. Such an analysis is facilitated by the introduction of a fast directional continuous spherical wavelet transform. The directional nature of the analysis allows one to probe orientated structure in the data. Significant deviations from Gaussianity are detected in the skewness and kurtosis of spherical elliptical Mexican hat and real Morlet wavelet coefficients for both the WMAP and Tegmark et al. (2003) foreground-removed maps. The previous non-Gaussianity detection made by Vielva et al. (2003) using the spherical symmetric Mexican hat wavelet is confirmed, although their detection at the 99.9% significance level is only made at the 95.3% significance level using our most conservative statistical test. Furthermore, deviations from Gaussianity in the skewness of spherical real Morlet wavelet coefficients on a wavelet scale of 550 arcmin (corresponding to an effective global size on the sky of approximately 26 degrees and an internal size of 3 degrees) at an azimuthal orientation of 72 degrees, are made at the 98.3% significance level, using the same conservative method. The wavelet analysis inherently allows one to localise on the sky those regions that introduce skewness and those that introduce kurtosis. Preliminary noise analysis indicates that these detected deviation regions are not atypical and have average noise dispersion. Further analysis is required to ascertain whether these detected regions correspond to secondary or instrumental effects, or whether in fact the non-Gaussianity detected is due to intrinsic primordial fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, references added, replaced to match version accepted by MNRAS

Following the detection of a gravitational microlensing high magnification event (HME) in Q2237+0305A attempts have been made to place limits on the dimensions of the quasar continuum source. The analyses have studied either the observed event magnitude or the event duration. The latter approach has been hampered by lack of knowledge about the transverse velocity of the lensing galaxy. We obtain both upper and lower statistical limits on the size of the continuum source from the observed HME using determinations of transverse velocity obtained from the published monitoring data. Our calculations take account of the caustic orientation as well as the component of the caustic velocity that results from stellar proper motions. Our determination of source size relies on an estimated duration of 52 days for the HME, and so will be refined when more HMEs are observed. We find that the upper and lower limits on the magnified region of the R-band continuum source are 6 times 10^15 and 2 times 10^13 cm respectively (99% confidence). Through consideration of the joint probability for source size and mean microlens mass we find that the mean mass lies between ~0.01 solar masses and ~1 solar mass (95% confidence)., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures.
