Abstract

Machine learning models use high dimensional feature spaces to map their inputs to the corresponding class labels. However, these features often do not have a one-to-one correspondence with physical concepts understandable by humans, which hinders the ability to provide a meaningful explanation for the decisions made by these models. We propose a method for measuring the correlation between high-level concepts and the decisions made by a machine learning model. Our method can isolate the impact of a given high-level concept and accurately measure it quantitatively. Additionally, this study aims to determine the prevalence of frequent patterns in machine learning models, which often occur in imbalanced datasets. We have successfully applied the proposed method to fundus images and managed to quantitatively measure the impact of radiomic patterns on the model decisions., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, "to be published in the journal of Computer SCience"

Abstract

Data reusability has become a distinct characteristic of scientific, commercial, and administrative practices nowadays. However, an unlimited and careless reuse of data may lead to privacy breaches and unfair impacts on individuals and vulnerable groups. Data content adaption is a key aspect of preserving data privacy and fairness. Often, such content adaption affects data utility adversely. Further, the interaction between privacy protection and fairness protection can be subject to making trade-offs because mitigating privacy risks may adversely affect detecting unfairness and vice versa. Therefore, there is a need for research on understanding the interactions between data utility, privacy and fairness. To this end, in this contribution, we use concepts from causal reasoning and argue for adopting an integrated view on data content adaption for data driven decision support systems. This asks for considering the operation context wholistically. By means of two cases, we illustrate that, in some situations, local data content adaption may lead to low data quality and utility. An integrated wholistic approach, however, may result in reuse of the original data (i.e., without content adaption, thus in higher data utilization) without adversely affecting privacy and fairness. We discuss some implications of this approach and sketch a few directions for future research.

Abstract

Abstract This research aimed to increase the natural frequencies of a non-rotating 2D tri-axial braided composite (2DTBC) fan blade. The investigation utilized a multidisciplinary approach, integrating Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modeling, analytical method, Finite Element (FE) analysis, optimization techniques, and experimental validation. The ANN captured the complex relationship between the braiding machine and structure parameters. The mechanical properties of the 2DTBC were determined through the micromechanical modeling, and the thin-shell analysis was applied to describe the blade’s displacement and strain characteristics. Micromechanical modeling examines material behavior at the microscopic level, and thin shell analysis focuses on modeling and analyzing thin, curved structures using simplified equations. The FE method facilitated the formulation of the equation of motion and the calculation of natural frequencies. A genetic algorithm, focused on a single-objective optimization, was employed to refine the braiding structure parameters and the number of composite layers, thereby enhancing the blade’s natural frequencies. The optimized 2DTBC blade was subsequently fabricated and validated through impact hammer modal testing, showing strong agreement with the predictions from the combined ANN-analytical-FEM-GA model. The optimization of the braiding parameters led to a significant increase in the blade’s natural frequencies.
