Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the fragility of the global food system, sending shockwaves across countries' societies and economy. This has presented formidable challenges to sustaining a healthy and resilient lifestyle. The objective of this study is to examine the food consumption patterns and assess diet diversity indicators, primarily focusing on the food consumption score (FCS), among households in 38 countries both before and during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 37 207 participants (mean age: 36.70 ± 14.79, with 77 % women) was conducted in 38 countries through an online survey administered between April and June 2020. The study utilized a pre-tested food frequency questionnaire to explore food consumption patterns both before and during the COVID-19 periods. Additionally, the study computed Food Consumption Score (FCS) as a proxy indicator for assessing the dietary diversity of households. Findings: This quantification of global, regional and national dietary diversity across 38 countries showed an increment in the consumption of all food groups but a drop in the intake of vegetables and in the dietary diversity. The household's food consumption scores indicating dietary diversity varied across regions. It decreased in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries, including Lebanon (p < 0.001) and increased in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries including Bahrain (p = 0.003), Egypt (p < 0.001) and United Arab Emirates (p = 0.013). A decline in the household's dietary diversity was observed in Australia (p < 0.001), in South Africa including Uganda (p < 0.001), in Europe including Belgium (p < 0.001), Denmark (p = 0.002), Finland (p < 0.001) and Netherland (p = 0.027) and in South America including Ecuador (p < 0.001), Brazil (p < 0.001), Mexico (p < 0.0001) and Peru (p < 0.001). Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the fragility of the global food system, sending shockwaves across countries' societies and economy. This has presented formidable challenges to sustaining a healthy and resilient lifestyle. The objective of this study is to examine the food consumption patterns and assess diet diversity indicators, primarily focusing on the food consumption score (FCS), among households in 38 countries both before and during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 37 207 participants (mean age: 36.70 ± 14.79, with 77 % women) was conducted in 38 countries through an online survey administered between April and June 2020. The study utilized a pre-tested food frequency questionnaire to explore food consumption patterns both before and during the COVID-19 periods. Additionally, the study computed Food Consumption Score (FCS) as a proxy indicator for assessing the dietary diversity of households. Findings: This quantification of global, regional and national dietary diversity across 38 countries showed an increment in the consumption of all food groups but a drop in the intake of vegetables and in the dietary diversity. The household's food consumption scores indicating dietary diversity varied across regions. It decreased in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries, including Lebanon (p < 0.001) and increased in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries including Bahrain (p = 0.003), Egypt (p < 0.001) and United Arab Emirates (p = 0.013). A decline in the household's dietary diversity was observed in Australia (p < 0.001), in South Africa including Uganda (p < 0.001), in Europe including Belgium (p < 0.001), Denmark (p = 0.002), Finland (p < 0.001) and Netherland (p = 0.027) and in South America including Ecuador (p < 0.001), Brazil (p < 0.001), Mexico (p < 0.0001) and Peru (p < 0.001). Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic along with its confinement period boosted lifestyle modifications and impacted women and men differently which exacerbated existing gender inequalities. The main objective of this paper is to assess the gender-based differentials in food consumption patterns, dietary diversity and the determinants favoring weight change before and amid the COVID-19 pandemic among Arab men and women from 10 Arab countries. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted based on a convenience sample of 12,447 households' family members (mean age: 33.2 ± 12.9; 50.1% females) and information from participants aged 18 years and above was collected about periods before and during the pandemic. Results: Findings showed that, during the COVID-19 period, the dietary diversity, declined by 1.9% among females compared to males (0.4%) (p < 0.001) and by 1.5% among overweight participants (p < 0.001) compared to their counterparts. Conclusions: To conclude, gender-sensitive strategies and policies to address weight gain and dietary diversity during emergent shocks and pandemics are urgently needed in the region. Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smokers are at high risk of developing severe COVID-19. Lockdown was a chosen strategy to deal with the spread of infectious diseases; nonetheless, it influenced people's eating and smoking behaviors. The main objective of this study is to determine the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on smoking (waterpipe and cigarette) behavior and its associations with sociodemographic characteristics and body mass index. METHODS: The data were derived from a large-scale retrospective cross-sectional study using a validated online international survey from 38 countries (n=37207) conducted between 17 April and 25 June 2020. The Eastern Mediterranean Region (WHO-EMR countries) data related to 10 Arabic countries that participated in this survey have been selected for analysis in this study. A total of 12433 participants were included in the analysis of this study, reporting their smoking behavior and their BMI before and during the COVID-19 lockdown. Descriptive and regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between smoking practices and the participant's country of origin, sociodemographic characteristics, and BMI (kg/m2). Abstract

Lebanon's natural water resources are facing serious problems related to quality and quantity. Unregulated resource planning and rising demand are the main factors. Water resources are used in several ways. However, due to the over-exploitation, and random use of surface water resources, Lebanon is facing severe problems related to water need and accessibility. This study focused on the Ras El-Ain area located in the South of Lebanon that dedicated, along with other reservoirs, to supply potable water for Tyr and the surrounding villages. Nowadays, the water of these natural ponds has been polluted significantly due to unrestricted liquid and solid waste disposal. Physicochemical and microbiological water characteristics, following the LIBNOR guidelines, of four selected samples from each natural pond were tested. In addition, another sample was taken from a water reservoir that collects water from these natural ponds. The obtained results were used to evaluate the extent of pollution in these natural ponds using PhreeQC software. The novelty of this study stems from the fact that it is the first to shed light on the degree of pollution level in the Ras El-Ain ponds, Lebanon (an unstudied area). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are ectoparasites infesting livestock in every geographic area in the world and they are vectors of several viral, bacterial, and protozoan pathogens to animals and humans worldwide. A deep knowledge of the geographical distribution of these arthropods would have a key role in the control of tick-borne diseases. Few data are available about tick presence in domestic ruminants in Lebanon. The study aimed at providing an analysis of tick presence and distribution in Lebanon. Ticks were collected from cattle, sheep, and goats farms distributed in 6 Lebanese provinces between June and September 2014. A total of 272 adult hard ticks were randomly collected from domestic ruminants (cattle, sheep, and goats) located at 37 Lebanese farms, distributed among 30 villages. Ticks belonged to 4 Ixodidae genera: Rhipicephalus (72.4%), Haemaphysalis (11.4%), Dermacentor (8.1%), and Hyalomma (8.1%). They included the following species: Rhipicephalus annulatus (50.7%), Rhipicephalus turanicus (18.8%), Hyalomma anatolicum (8.1%), Haemaphylasis punctata (11.4%), Dermacentor marginatus (8.1%), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (2.5%), and Rhipicephalus bursa (0.4%). Rhipicephalus turanicus and H. anatolicum were found on cattle, sheep, and goats, R. annulatus on cattle and sheep, R. sanguineus, D. marginatus and Hea. punctata on sheep and goats, while R. bursa was collected only on sheep. Tick species involved in pathogen transmission were found and some of the identified species were recorded in Lebanon for the first time.

Abstract

International audience; Gold nanoparticles have attracted and raised interest due to their potential applications in chemical and biochemical sensing for low traces molecule detection, in tumor ablation, and Lab-On Chip technologies. In this context, we actually develop new gold nanoparticles (GNPs) synthesis method which is based on the use of polymer nanoporous structures as reactors for GNPs elaboration. The process is gold precursor-loaded polymer self-assembly-induced the formation of GNPs. In the present project, we aim to understand the mechanism behind the formation of uniform NPs. Thus, a physico-chemical study based on the variation of the experimental parameters is required to tune the optical and physical properties of GNPs. Such structural properties are generally difficult to obtain by chemical ways as compared to our process. Moreover, the control of NPs shape and size will allow us to determine the plasmon band of the NPS and to define their sensing features. Then, bio-sensing measurements based on SERS (Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy) phenomenon and using bacteria as target molecules will be performed in order to evaluate the SERS enhancement factor of the synthesized systems.

Abstract

Transposable elements are genomic sequences able to replicate themselves and to move within genomes. Their ability to integrate near genes and to produce chromosomal rearrangements by recombination between copies, make transposable elements mutagens. Moreover, transposable elements are able to alter the expression of neighboring genes through their promoter regions. Transposable elements form 45% of the human genome and may represent up to 90% of certain plant genomes. In the first part of my thesis, I examined the factors that determine the distribution of these elements. I have been interested in a particular factor, which is the function of the genes in the vicinity of transposable element insertions. In the second part, I determined the impact of epigenetic modifications alterations (histone modifications) in different gene components, including transposable elements, on the variation of gene expression in tumoral conditions.; Les éléments transposables sont des séquences génomiques capables de se répliquer et de se déplacer dans les génomes. Leur capacité à s’insérer près des gènes et à produire des réarrangements chromosomiques par recombinaison entre copies, font des éléments transposables des agents mutagènes. Les éléments transposables sont de plus capables de modifier l’expression des gènes voisins grâce aux régions promotrices qu’ils possèdent. Les éléments transposables ont été trouvés dans la plupart des génomes dans lesquels ils ont été recherchés. Ils forment ainsi 45 % du génome de l’homme et peuvent représenter jusqu’à 90 % du génome de certaines plantes. Dans la première partie de ma thèse, je me suis penché sur les facteurs qui déterminent la distribution de ces éléments. Je me suis intéressé à un facteur particulier, qui est la fonction des gènes dans le voisinage des insertions d’éléments transposables. Dans la deuxième partie, j’ai essayé de déterminer l’impact de l’altération des modifications épigénétiques (modifications d’histones plus précisément) associées aux différents composants géniques, dont les éléments transposables, sur la variation de l’expression des gènes en condition tumorale.

Abstract

Non-volatile flash memory used in computers, mobile phones and USB-keys can be made up of nanocrystals (SC) inserted in an insulating matrix. It requires development of "Oxide/SC/oxide/Si (001)" type hetero-structures and the control of each interface. Within this framework, we studied the initial growth mechanisms of Si and Ge (SC) on LaA1O3(001) crystal oxide substrates with high permittivity (high-k). Chemical and structural properties have been studied in-situ by X-Ray photoemission (XPS and XPD) and electron diffraction (RHEED and LEED) technics and ex­ situ by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and high resolution tunneling electron microscopy (HRTEM). Clean LaA1O3(001) substrate contains a c(2x2) surface reconstruction which attributed to gaps of oxygen (O) on the surface. Si and Ge have been deposited by molecular bearn epitaxy (MBE), at room temperature followed by series of annealings at high temperatures. Epitaxy requires temperature more than 550°C for the deposition. Volmer Weber growth mode was characterized by the formation of nanometric densely packed islands. These islands are relaxed and have an abrupt interface with the substrate. Islands of Ge have mostly random orientations with nevertheless epitaxy privileged relationship, same as that of the Si., Les mémoires flash non volatiles - utilisées dans les ordinateurs, téléphones portables ou clés USB - peuvent être constituées de nanocristaux semiconducteurs (SC) insérées dans une matrice isolante. Elles nécessitent l'élaboration d'hétérostructures de type "oxyde/SC/oxyde/Si(00l)" et la maîtrise de chaque interface. Dans ce cadre, nous avons étudié les mécanismes de croissance initiale du Si et du Ge (SC) sur des substrats d'oxyde cristallins LaA1O3(001) à forte permittivité (high-k). Les propriétés chimiques et structurales ont été déterminées in-situ par photoémission X (XPS et XPD) et par diffraction d'électrons (RHEED et LEED) puis ex-situ par microscopies en champ proche (AFM) et en transmission (HRTEM). Le substrat LaAlO3(001) propre présente une reconstruction de surface c(2x2) attribuée à des lacunes d'O en surface. Les croissances de Si et Ge ont été réalisées par épitaxie par jet moléculaire (MBE), soit à température ambiante suivies de recuits, soit à haute température. L'épitaxie requiert des températures de dépôt supérieures à 550°C. Le mode de croissance est de type Volmer Weber caractérisé par la formation d'îlots cristallins de dimensions nanométriques et de forte densité. Ces îlots sont relaxés et présentent une interface abrupte avec le substrat. Quant aux îlots de Ge, ils ont majoritairement des orientations aléatoires avec néanmoins une relation d'épitaxie privilégiée, la même que celle du Si.

38. One-step synthesis of a monolayer of monodisperse gold nanocubes for SERS substrates.

Abstract

Here, we report for the first time a facile and fast one-step strategy to fabricate monodisperse gold nanocubes (GNCs) by spin-coating a gold precursor-loaded PMMA dispersion on N-doped silicon. A vapor induced phase separation allows PMMA self-assembly into a nanoporous film including the GNCs in its holes. Control of size and shape until obtaining monodisperse GNCs was achieved by tailoring the concentration of the gold precursor. Upon increasing this concentration, the optical properties of the GNCs such as the surface plasmon resonance has been red-shifted from 540 to 650 nm, in relation to the strong interaction between closely separated GNCs, increase in their number and PMMA thickness on the substrate surface. Therefore, the high density of hotspots in the gaps between closely spaced GNCs led to the sensitive detection of pyridine with an unprecedented SERS threshold of detection of 10−12 M. SERS experiments revealed the high chemical enhancement and allowed few molecule detection without any surface modification of the GNCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic along with its confinement period boosted lifestyle modifications and impacted women and men differently which exacerbated existing gender inequalities.
