This paper reviews the recent progress in our estimation of ocean dynamic topography and the derived surface geostrophic currents, mainly based on multiple nadir radar altimeter missions. These altimetric observations provide the cornerstone of our ocean circulation observing system from space. The largest signal in sea surface topography is from the mean surface dominated by the marine geoid, and we will discuss recent progress in observing the mean ocean circulation from altimetry, once the geoid and other corrections have been estimated and removed. We then address the recent advances in our observations of the large-scale and mesoscale ocean circulation from space, and the particular challenges and opportunities for new observations in the polar regions. The active research in the ocean barotropic tides and internal tidal circulation is also presented. The paper also addresses how our networks of global multi-satellite and in situ observations are being combined and assimilated to characterize the four-dimensional ocean circulation, for climate research and ocean forecasting systems. For the future of ocean circulation from space, the need for continuity of our current observing system is crucial, and we discuss the exciting enhancement to come with global wide-swath altimetry, the extension into the coastal and high-latitude regions, and proposals for direct total surface current satellites in the 2030 period. Seasonal and interannual variations in sea surface salinity (SSS) are analyzed in the Sea Ice Zone south of 60°S, from a 22-year time series of observations near 140°E. In the northern sea-ice zone during the warming, melting cycle from October to March, waters warm by an average of 3.5 °C and become fresher by 0.1 to 0.25. In the southern sea-ice zone, the surface temperatures vary from − 1 to 1 °C over summer, and the maximal SSS range occurs in December, with a minimum SSS of 33.65 near the Southern Boundary of the ACC, reaching 34.4 in the shelf waters close to the coast. The main fronts, normally defined at subsurface, are shown to have more distinct seasonal characteristics in SSS than in SST. The interannual variations in SSS are more closely linked to variations in upstream sea-ice cover than surface forcing. SSS and sea-ice variations show distinct phases, with large biannual variations in the early 1990s, weaker variations in the 2000s and larger variations again from 2009 onwards. The calving of the Mertz Glacier Tongue in February 2010 leads to increased sea-ice cover and widespread freshening of the surface layers from 2011 onwards. Summer freshening in the northern sea-ice zone is ~ 0.05–0.07 per decade, increasing to 0.08 per decade in the southern sea-ice zone, largely influenced by the Mertz Glacier calving event at the end of our time series. The summer time series of SSS on the shelf at 140°E is in phase but less variable than the SSS observed upstream in the Adélie Depression, and thus represents a spatially integrated index of the wider SSS variations. The main oceanographic objective of the future SWOT mission is to better characterize the ocean mesoscale and sub-mesoscale circulation, by observing a finer range of ocean topography dynamics down to 20 km wavelength. Despite the very high spatial resolution of the future satellite, it will not capture the time evolution of the shorter mesoscale signals, such as the formation and evolution of small eddies. SWOT will have an exact repeat cycle of 21 days, with near repeats around 5-10 days, depending on the latitude. Here, we investigate a technique to reconstruct the missing 2D SSH signal in the time between two satellite revisits. We use the dynamical interpolation (DI) technique developed by Ubelmann et al. (2015). Based on potential vorticity (hereafter PV) conservation using a one and a half layer quasi-geostrophic model, it features an active advection of the SSH field. This model has been tested in energetic open ocean regions such as the Gulf Stream and the Californian Current, and has given promising results. Here, we test this model in the Western Mediterranean Sea, a lower energy region with complex small scale physics, and compare the SSH reconstruction with the high-resolution Symphonie model. We investigate an extension of the simple dynamical model including a separated mean circulation. We find that the DI gives a 16-18% improvement in the reconstruction of the surface height and eddy kinetic energy fields, compared with a simple linear interpolation, and a 37% improvement in the Northern Current subregion. In past studies, Lagrangian stirring of surface tracer fields by altimetric surface geostrophic currents has been performed in different mid- to high-latitude regions, showing good results in reconstructing finer scale tracer patterns. Here, we explore the pertinence of the technique in the western equatorial Pacific and in the subtropical southwest Pacific. Initial conditions are derived from weekly gridded low-resolution temperature and salinity fields based on in situ hydrographic data. Validation of the reconstructed fine-scale surface tracer fields is performed using satellite AMSRE Sea Surface Temperature data and high-resolution ship thermosalinograph data. We test two kinds of Lagrangian advection. The standard one-way advection leads to an increased error as the advection time increases, due to the missing physics, such as air-sea fluxes or non-geostrophic dynamics. A second 'backward-forward' advection technique is explored to reduce this bias in the tracer field, with improved results. In the subtropical southwest Pacific Ocean, the mesoscale temperature and salinity fronts are well represented by both Lagrangian advection techniques over a short 7- to 14-day advection time, including westward-propagating features not apparent in the initial fields. In the tropics, the results are less clear. The validation is hampered by the complex vertical stratification, and the lateral stirring technique is limited by the pertinence of using geostrophic surface current fields in the tropics. We suggest that the passive lateral stirring technique is efficient in regions with moderate to high mesoscale energy, where mesoscale surface tracer and surface height fields are correlated. The interaction of jets with topography in the Southern Ocean is investigated using 19 years of altimetry data. In particular, the 'jet jumping' mode of variability, by which two or more jets passing close to the same topographic feature show strongly anticorrelated strengthening and weakening, is studied. Three regional case studies are described-the Southeast Indian Ridge south of Tasmania, the Macquarie Ridge south of New Zealand, and the Pacific-Antarctic Rise-where the jet jumping variability is found to occur. Using principal component analysis, the spatial patterns of variability show a vortex dipole forming on either side of a particular jet. For each regional study, it is found that the variability in strength of these vortices (as measured by the spatially averaged vorticity) is strongly correlated with time series of the principle component that describes the jet jumping variability. The observational analysis is complemented by a suite of idealized numerical experiments using a three-layer quasigeostrophic model with simple topography. The numerical results show similar spatial patterns of variability to those observed in the altimetric data. Internal variability is sufficient to generate jet jumping variability, as there is no time-varying external forcing applied in the model configuration. The simulations are used to investigate the effect of topographic scale and changing bottom friction. The authors find that both have a strong influence on the time scale of the variability, with larger topographic scales and higher bottom friction leading to faster time scales. Ocean surface fronts and filaments have a strong impact on the global ocean circulation and biogeochemistry. Surface Lagrangian advection with time-evolving altimetric geostrophic velocities can be used to simulate the submesoscale front and filament structures in large-scale tracer fields. We study this technique in the Southern Ocean region south of Tasmania, a domain marked by strong meso- to submesoscale features such as the fronts of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Starting with large-scale surface tracer fields that we stir with altimetric velocities, we determine 'advected' fields which compare well with high-resolution in situ or satellite tracer data. We find that fine scales are best represented in a statistical sense after an optimal advection time of ∼2 weeks, with enhanced signatures of the ACC fronts and better spectral energy. The technique works best in moderate to high EKE regions where lateral advection dominates. This technique may be used to infer the distribution of unresolved small scales in any physical or biogeochemical surface tracer that is dominated by lateral advection. Submesoscale dynamics also impact the subsurface of the ocean, and the Lagrangian advection at depth shows promising results. Finally, we show that climatological tracer fields computed from the advected large-scale fields display improved fine-scale mean features, such as the ACC fronts, which can be useful in the context of ocean modelling. Abstract: A 19-year time series of underway sea surface salinity (SSS) data from the SURVOSTRAL line between Hobart, Australia and Adelie Land, Antarctica has revealed the distinct patterns of seasonal and interannual variability in two key zones of the Southern Ocean: in the Subantarctic Zone and in the Antarctic Zone. Both regions show a weak seasonal freshening of the surface waters over the summer months, with surface waters becoming shallower, warmer and fresher during the summer heating cycle. In the region north of the Subantarctic Front, interannual variations in the summer SSS signature are linked to the latitudinal movements of the Subtropical Front. When this front shifts southward, more high salinity subtropical waters are brought into the domain. Rather than responding to local wind stress forcing, the interannual SSS variability is strongly linked to southward flow from eastern Tasmania (the Tasman outflow), whose decadal variability responds with a 2–3year delay to remote wind forcing in the South Pacific (Hill et al., 2008). Over this period, variations in the local surface freshwater forcing make a minor contribution to the SURVOSTRAL SSS signature. There appears to be a regime shift in the surface forcing and the SSS response, before and after the large perturbation in 2001–2002. In the Antarctic Zone, the summer SSS signature shows distinct biannual variations that are correlated with upstream sea-ice coverage in the preceding spring. There is no significant correlation between local precipitation changes and the SURVOSTRAL SSS time series. Rather, the integrated effects of upstream sea-ice melt dominate the interannual variations in SSS at the SURVOSTRAL line. Finally, a simple 2D Lagrangian particle analysis shows that in some years the surface waters circulate for a longer time in the northern part of the domain, where their freshwater content may be reduced by mixing with the surrounding waters. Abstract: The paper provides a review of recent results on mesoscale ocean dynamics derived from satellite altimetry. Since 1992, we have had an unprecedented 18year high-resolution monitoring of the ocean mesoscale field. Altimetry is often used in mesoscale studies in synergy with other remote sensing techniques and in situ data. This global, high-resolution data set has allowed oceanographers to quantify the previously unknown seasonal and interannual variations in eddy kinetic energy and eddy heat and salt transports, and investigate their causes. Eddy tracking techniques have allowed us to monitor their propagation pathways, to bring to light the meridional divergence of cyclones and anticyclones, and to question the role of Rossby waves versus non-linear eddies in the mid to high latitude bands. Altimetry has also revealed the presence of zonal fronts and jets everywhere in the ocean, and brought to light how mesoscale eddies can impact back onto the atmospheric circulation. Finally, altimetry, in synergy with other observations and high-resolution numerical models, has helped reveal the complexity of the sub-mesoscale features, associated with stirring and mixing around the mesoscale eddies, of great importance for the vertical exchange of oceanic tracers. The sources and pathways of mode waters and lower thermocline waters entering the subtropical gyre of the Indian Ocean are examined. A Lagrangian analysis is performed on an eddy-admitting simulation of the Global Ocean performed by the DRAKKAR Group (NEMO/OPA), which captures the main observed features. We trace the subducted mode water’s pathways, identify their formation regions and trace whether their source waters come from the Atlantic, Pacific or Indian sectors of the Southern Ocean. Three main sites for mode waters ventilation in the Indian sector are identified with different circulation pathways and source water masses: (a) just north of Kerguelen, where 4.2 Sv of lighter Subantarctic Mode Waters (SAMW); σ0 ∼ 26.5) are exported—originating in the Atlantic and Agulhas Retroflection regions; (b) SW of Australia, where 6.5 Sv of medium SAMW ( σ0 ∼ 26.6) are ventilated—originating in the southern and denser Agulhas Retroflection region; (c) SW of Tasmania and along the South Australian coast, where 3 Sv of denser SAMW ( σ0 ∼ 26.75) are ventilated—originating from three sources: Leeuwin Current waters, Tasman Sea (Pacific) waters and Antarctic Surface Waters. In all cases, modelled mode waters were last ventilated in the Indian Ocean just north of the deepest winter-mixed layers. For the waters subducted SW of Australia, the last ventilation site extends even further north. Waters ventilated in the deepest mixed layers north of the Subantarctic Front are then re-ventilated 5 years later southwest of Australia. The model results raise new hypotheses that revisit the classical picture of the SAMW formation and transformation, where a large homogeneous mixed layer is subducted and ‘slides’ equatorward, essentially maintaining the T/S characteristics acquired at the surface. Firstly, the last ventilation of the modelled mode waters is not in the region of the deepest mixed layers, as previously thought, but further north in regions of moderate meso-scale eddy activity. Secondly, the model shows for the first time a significant source region for Indian Ocean mode waters coming from deep winter-mixed layers along the south Australian coast. Finally, this analysis shows how the mode water characteristics are modified after subduction, due to internal eddy mixing. The simulation shows that resolved eddies have a strong impact on the mixed layer properties and that isopycnal eddy mixing also contributes to the generation of more homogeneous mode water characteristics in the interior. The Ocean Surface Topography Mission/Jason-2 (OSTM/Jason-2) satellite altimetry mission was successfully launched on June 20, 2008, as a cooperative mission between CNES, EUMETSAT, NASA, and NOAA. OSTM/Jason-2 will continue to precisely measure the surface topography of the oceans and continental surface waters, following on the same orbit as its predecessors, TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason-1. To maintain the high-accuracy measurements, the mission carries a dual-frequency altimeter, a three-frequency microwave radiometer, and three precise positioning systems. The objectives of the mission are both operational and scientific. The mission will provide near-real time high-precision altimetric measurements for integration into ocean forecasting models and other products. The mission will also extend the precise surface topography time series started by TOPEX/Poseidon in 1992 over two decades in order to study long-term ocean variations such as mean sea level variations and interannual and decadal oscillations. The measurement system has been adapted to provide quality data nearer to the coasts, and over lakes and rivers. A global 1/4° resolution product of surface currents has been developed by the Centre de Topographie des Océans et de l’Hydrosphère. The surface current is calculated from a combination of Ekman currents derived from wind estimates from QuikSCAT satellite, geostrophic current anomalies derived from altimetry, and a mean geostrophic current derived from climatology. In the equatorial band, the currents are adjusted following the methodology proposed by Lagerloef et al. (J Geophys Res, 104(C10):22313–22326, 1999). These satellite-derived currents have been compared to different types of in situ current observations. A global validation is performed using Lagrangian surface drifting buoys and acoustic Doppler current profiler current observations along ship tracks. The comparison shows a very good agreement in the subtropical and mid-latitude bands. The correlation between the satellite-derived currents and the drifter currents in zonal mean bands is around 0.7 for most of the world oceans, both for the zonal and the meridional components. This correlation rises up to 0.8 in the regions of strong boundary currents. In the equatorial band, the correlation with the surface drifting buoys is reduced. A direct comparison with the TOGA/TAO moored current meter data at the equator shows that the low frequency currents are captured by the satellite current product, but there is a substantial high-frequency signal (<20 days), which is not reproduced. This is especially the case for the meridional component and is mainly related to the tropical instability waves. We also show that using daily QuikSCAT wind forcing improves the satellite current product, particularly in the high-latitude westerly wind belt and in the tropical Indian Ocean. Abstract: Satellite altimetry data show a strong increase in sea level in various parts of the Southern Ocean over the 1990s. In this paper, we examine the causes of the observed sea level rise in the region south of Australia, using 13 years of repeat hydrographic data from the WOCE SR3 sections, and the SURVOSTRAL XBT and surface salinity data. The hydrographic data show a poleward shift in the position of the Subtropical and the Subantarctic Fronts over the period. In the Antarctic Zone, the Antarctic Surface Water has become warmer and fresher, and the Winter Water tongue has become warmer, fresher, thinner and shallower. Increased freshening south of the Polar Front is linked to increased precipitation over the 1990s. Temperature changes over the upper 500m account for only part of the altimetric sea level rise. The CTD sections show that the deeper layers are also warmer and slightly saltier and the observed sea level can be explained by steric expansion over the upper 2000m. ENSO variability impacts on the northern part of the section, and a simple Sverdrup transport model shows how large-scale changes in the wind forcing, related to the Southern Annular Mode, may contribute to the deeper warming to the south. Abstract: Seasonal and interannual variations of the mixed layer properties in the Antarctic Zone (AZ) south of Tasmania are described using 7 WOCE/SR3 CTD sections and 8 years of summertime SURVOSTRAL XBT and thermosalinograph measurements between Tasmania and Antarctica. The AZ, which extends from the Polar Front (PF) to the Southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current Front (SACCF), is characterized by a 150m deep layer of cold Winter Water (WW) overlayed in summer by warmer, fresher water mass known as Antarctic Surface Water (AASW). South of Tasmania, two branches of the PF divide the AZ into northern and southern zones with distinct water properties and variability. In the northern AZ (between the northern and southern branches of the PF), the mixed layer depth (MLD) is fairly constant in latitude, being 150m deep in winter and around 40–60m in summer. In the southern AZ, the winter MLD decreases from 150m at the S-PF to 80m at the SACCF and from 60 to 35m in summer. Shallower mixed layers in the AZ-S are due to the decrease in the wind speed and stronger upwelling near the Antarctic Divergence. The WW MLD oscillates by ±15m around its mean value and modest interannual changes are driven by winter wind stress anomalies. The mixed layer is on annual average 1.7°C warmer, 0.06 fresher and 0.2kgm-3 lighter in the northern AZ than in the southern AZ. The Levitus (1998) climatology is in agreement with the observed mean summer mixed layer temperature and salinity along the SURVOSTRAL line but underestimates the MLD by 10–20m. The winter MLD in the climatology is also closed to that observed, but is 0.15 saltier than the observations along the AZ-N of the SR3 line. MLD, temperature and density show a strong seasonal cycle through the AZ while the mixed layer salinity is nearly constant throughout the year. During winter, the AZ MLD is associated with a halocline while during summer it coincides with a thermocline. Interannual variability of the AZ summer mixed layer is partly influenced by large scale processes such as the circumpolar wave which produces a warm anomaly during the summer 1996–1997, and partly by local mechanisms such as the retroflection of the S-PF which introduces cold water across the AZ-N. Eight years of altimetry and hydrographic data are used to examine the formation, propagation and vertical characteristics of cold-core rings formed north of the Subantarctic Front, SAF, in the region south of Tasmania. Altimetry allows us to follow the spatial–temporal evolution of these cold, low sea level anomalies. Most of these cold-core rings are formed from unstable meanders of the SAF, and the interaction of the meanders with bathymetry appears to influence the eddy spawning. The interaction of a westward propagating cold-core eddy with an eastward propagating equatorward meander can also trigger a cold-core eddy spawning event. Hydrographic sections show that these eddies have cool, low-salinity cores reaching to at least 1500m depth. During summer, their surface temperature signal is eliminated only 2–3 weeks after spawning, however, their surface salinity signature is maintained for 2–3 months. We estimate that these cold-core eddies could contribute an annual heat deficit of -3.8×1019J, and an annual salt deficit of -1.6×1012kg, and contribute to cooling and freshening the region north of the SAF where mode waters form. The salt deficit is equivalent to that introduced by the northward Ekman transport, suggesting that eddies may play an important role in transporting low-salinity water into the Subantarctic Zone. The vertical structures of three warm-core Leeuwin Current eddies are described, as well as their temporal evolution determined from altimetric data. These warm-core eddies have large positive sea-level anomalies, although their surface temperature fields are not necessarily warmer than the ambient waters. These eddies were observed some 350 km offshore from the Leeuwin Current in September 2000, around 25–30°S, and their vertical structure and temporal evolution show they were formed at the coast in May, when the Leeuwin Current is strongest. After separation from the current, the warm-core eddies drifted WNW following isopycnal contours, and were strongly steered by bathymetry. These eddies penetrated to at least 1500 m depth; the strongest eddy, Eddy B, influenced isopycnals to 2500 m. Eddy B appeared to be trapped and intensified by a Leeuwin Current squirt that directed warm, low-salinity water offshore from August to October. The average annual eddy heat and salt fluxes for waters warmer than 8°C are estimated at 0.004 PW and 3×105 kg s−1, respectively. The magnitude of these eddy fluxes is 20–30% of the annual mean poleward heat and salt flux in the eastern Indian Ocean, and is within the range of values observed for Agulhas eddies entering the South Atlantic. Characteristics of eddies originating in the Leeuwin Current (LC) have been investigated using 10-day sea-level anomaly maps of combined TOPEX/POSEIDON and ERS altimeter data for the period 1995–2000. During these 6 years, 37 long-lived anticyclonic eddies were tracked from the west coast of Australian to 90°E. Between three and nine eddies were spawned each year, and their trajectories are described in detail. Most long-lived eddies are generated in May–June, when the LC is most intense, and at three preferred locations: 20–21.5°S, 24–25°S and 28°–31°S. The temporal evolution and latitudinal variations of the sea-level anomalies and their radius and drift speed are discussed. Topography plays an important role in the evolution and structure of the eddies. Interactions with topography can induce splitting or merging of eddies which further affects the eddy decay. Nine years of Topex/Poseidon and ERS satellite altimetry and XBT data from the SURVOSTRAL program were used to analyze the seasonal and interannual variations of the eddy energetics in terms of its spatial distribution and relation with the upper ocean heat content. Eddy kinetic energy is calculated in two frequency bands one associated with transient and the other with low-frequency variability. The two eddy components have distinct geographical distribution. At the SURVOSTRAL line, the transient eddy energy is twice the low-frequency energy, with maximum transient energy occurring during the austral summer period and maximum low-frequency energy in winter. The site is one of growing eddy energy. Eddy momentum flux is northward over the SURVOSTRAL line, and the summertime eddy heat flux is poleward across the Subantarctic and Subtropical Fronts, and equatorward either side of the fronts. The article offers information on the satellite project Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM)/Jason-2 and an obituary for scientist Yves Menard is also presented. It informs that this satellite was launched on June 20, 2008. The purpose of this satellite mission is the extension of continuous climate record of precise surface topography measurements into the next decade. The OSTM/Jason-2 has been designed to provide more quality data near the coasts and over terrestrial surface waters.

The elevations of water surfaces hold important information on the earth's oceans and land surface waters. Ocean sea surface height is related to the internal change of the ocean's density and mass associated with ocean circulation and its response to climate change. The flow rates of rivers and volume changes of lakes are crucial to freshwater supplies and the hazards of floods and drought resulting from extreme weather and climate events. The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) Mission is a new satellite using advanced radar technology to make headway in observing the variability of the elevation of water surfaces globally, providing fundamentally new information previously not available to the study of earth's waters. Here, we provide the first results of SWOT over oceans, rivers, and lakes. We demonstrate the potential of the mission to address science questions in oceanography and hydrology. Plain Language Summary: Earth is a water planet. The vast amount of ocean water has stored most of the heat released to the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution through burning fossil fuels. Climate change is thus moderated by the ocean. Over land the freshwater in lakes, rivers, and reservoirs, a critical natural resource, is affected by the warming climate and direct human modifications. Processes of oceanic uptake of heat and carbon from the atmosphere and cycling of freshwater on land take place at spatial scales too small to have been adequately quantified from space. A new satellite, the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission, was launched in December 2022. Using advanced radar technology, SWOT provides unprecedented global observations for understanding the ocean's role in climate change and how freshwater resources respond to human influence. SWOT observations near coasts will also advance understanding of how rising sea levels impact those coasts. This paper presents the new global Mesoscale Eddy Trajectories Atlases (META3.1exp DT all-satellites, https://doi.org/10.24400/527896/a01-2021.001, Pegliasco et al., 2021a and META3.1exp DT two-satellites, https://doi.org/10.24400/527896/a01-2021.002, Pegliasco et al., 2021b), composed of the eddies' identifications and trajectories produced with altimetric maps. The detection method used is a heritage of the py-eddy-tracker algorithm developed by Mason et al. (2014), optimized to manage with efficiency large datasets, and thus long time series. These products are an improvement of the META2.0 product, produced by SSALTO/DUACS and distributed by AVISO+ (https://aviso.altimetry.fr) with support from CNES, in collaboration with Oregon State University with support from NASA and based on Chelton et al. (2011). META3.1exp provides supplementary information such as the mesoscale eddy shapes with the eddy edges and their maximum speed contour, and the eddy speed profiles from the center to the edge. The tracking algorithm used is based on overlapping contours, includes virtual observations and acts as a filter with respect to the shortest trajectories. The absolute dynamic topography field is now used for eddy detection, instead of the sea level anomaly maps, to better represent the ocean dynamics in the more energetic areas and close to coasts and islands. To evaluate the impact of the changes from META2.0 to META3.1exp, a comparison methodology has been applied. The similarity coefficient is based on the ratio between the eddies' overlap and their cumulative area, and allows an extensive comparison of the different datasets in terms of geographic distribution, statistics over the main physical characteristics, changes in the lifetime of the trajectories, etc. After evaluating the impact of each change separately, we conclude that the major differences between META3.1exp and META2.0 are due to the change in the detection algorithm. META3.1exp contains smaller eddies and trajectories lasting at least 10 days that were not available in the distributed META2.0 product. Nevertheless, 55 % of the structures in META2.0 are similar in META3.1exp, ensuring the continuity between the two products, and the physical characteristics of the common eddies are close. Geographically, the eddy distribution mainly differs in the strong current regions, where the mean dynamic topography gradients are sharp. The additional information on the eddy contours allows more accurate collocation of mesoscale structures with data from other sources, so META3.1exp is recommended for multi-disciplinary applications. Mediterranean Sea eddies are often generated in fixed geographical locations linked to either bathymetric fluctuations, coastline changes, instabilities around islands, or orographic wind forcing. Because of that, the mean circulation exhibits features with the same special scales as the mesoscale field. We provide here a first comparison of eddies detected and tracked using two altimetry products, the Sea Level Anomaly (SLA) and the Absolute Dynamic Topography (ADT), from 2000 to 2015. We showed that more individual eddies and trajectories are detected in the SLA data than in the ADT, having larger radius but lower Eddy Kinetic Energy. The spatial distribution of the mesoscale activity is different between the two data sets: the ADT-detected eddies closely follow the Mean Dynamic Topography (MDT) patterns which include the mean eddy generation sites whereas the SLA-detected eddies show more spatial homogeneity. The larger eddies are generally well detected in both the ADT or the SLA fields, but the numerous smaller and coastal eddies detected in the SLA fields have a tendency to mismatch the ADT detected eddies. Only 20–30% of eddies are detected exclusively in the SLA or the ADT product (i.e. have no collocation in the other field), whereas to 65–80% of the eddies are detected both in the SLA and the ADT fields. The Ierapetra Eddy is a typical example of the limitation of the SLA-detected eddies, as this orographically controlled feature is present in the MDT and thus leads to an artificial cyclonic eddy in the SLA field that shifts around its most frequent position. This study recommends the use of ADT fields for the detection of mesoscale structures in the Mediterranean Sea where the mean circulation and these mesoscale features have the same spatial scale and intensity, and similarly for any other ocean regions where the MDT contains mesoscale patterns. We present a new gridded sea surface height and current dataset produced by combining observations from nadir altimeters and drifting buoys. This product is based on a multiscale and multivariate mapping approach that offers the possibility to improve the physical content of gridded products by combining the data from various platforms and resolving a broader spectrum of ocean surface dynamic than in the current operational mapping system. The dataset covers the entire global ocean and spans from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2020. The multiscale approach decomposes the observed signal into different physical contributions. In the present study, we simultaneously estimate the mesoscale ocean circulations as well as part of the equatorial wave dynamics (e.g. tropical instability and Poincaré waves). The multivariate approach is able to exploit the geostrophic signature resulting from the synergy of altimetry and drifter observations. Sea-level observations in Arctic leads are also used in the merging to improve the surface circulation in this poorly mapped region. A quality assessment of this new product is proposed with regard to an operational product distributed in the Copernicus Marine Service. We show that the multiscale and multivariate mapping approach offers promising perspectives for reconstructing the ocean surface circulation: observations of leads contribute to improvement of the coverage in delivering gap-free maps in the Arctic and observations of drifters help to refine the mapping in regions of intense dynamics where the temporal sampling must be accurate enough to properly map the rapid mesoscale dynamics. Overall, the geostrophic circulation is better mapped in the new product, with mapping errors significantly reduced in regions of high variability and in the equatorial band. This paper presents the new global Mesoscale Eddy Trajectory Atlases (META3.1exp DT all-satellites, 10.24400/527896/a01-2021.001, Pegliasco et al., 2021a; and META3.1exp DT two-satellites, 10.24400/527896/a01-2021.002, Pegliasco et al., 2021b), composed of eddy identifications and trajectories produced with altimetric maps. The detection method used is inherited from the py-eddy-tracker (PET) algorithm developed by Mason et al. (2014), and is optimized to efficiently manage large datasets, and thus long time series. These products are an improvement on the earlier META2.0 product, which was produced by SSALTO/DUACS and distributed by AVISO + (https://aviso.altimetry.fr , last access: 8 March 2022) with support from CNES, in collaboration with Oregon State University and support from NASA, and based on the Chelton et al. Understanding the origin and fate of mode and intermediate waters (MW) in the subtropical Pacific Ocean is critical for climate, as MW store and export a large volume of CO, heat, nutrients and salinity to lower latitudes at depths isolated from the atmosphere. A realistic 4D simulation has been used to track and quantify the MW routes and their property characteristics at the last region of subduction. It also allows us to quantify the water transformation after subduction. The simulation has been compared to available observations using a collocation method that interpolated model data onto observations in time and space. The comprehensive comparisons gave us confidence in the model's capacity to reproduce MW characteristics. A quantitative Lagrangian analysis was performed on the model output to depict the origin, the fate and the route of MW circulating in the southern Pacific Ocean, selected in the density range of 26.8-27.4 kg m. We found 18 Sv of MW were transported northward in patches through the 42° S section, mostly between 200 and 800 m depth. Of this transport, 8 Sv enters the Pacific Ocean in the upper layer south of Tasmania and subducts in the Pacific. The remainder is not ventilated in the Pacific sector: 4 Sv is advected from the Indian Ocean south of Tasmania at intermediate depth and finally 6 Sv is part of an intermediate depth recirculation within the Pacific Ocean. Particles take up to 30 years to travel northward through our domain before crossing the 42° S section. Southward transport branches also exist: 3 Sv flows southward following the eastern New Zealand coast and then exits through Drake Passage. An additional 4 Sv passes southward in the Tasman Sea, following the eastern Tasmanian coast and enters the Indian Ocean south of Tasmania, as part of the Tasman Leakage. Four different formation sites have been identified, where the MW are last ventilated. These formation sites have different water masses with specific salinity ranges. A study on the evolution of the physical characteristics of each of these water masses has been performed. All MW characteristics become more homogeneous at 42° S than they were when they left the mixed layer. This study confirms the homogenisation of mode waters at intermediate depth in the Pacific Ocean as previously revealed in the Indian Ocean using the same methodology. Eddy properties in the Bay of Biscay are studied from 15 years of reprocessed along-track altimeter data using a wavelet-based analysis. Associated spatial scales vary from ∼60 km in the inner bay to 130 km offshore, with amplitudes also increasing offshore. These characteristics are not correctly represented in standard gridded products, which are too smooth. Compared to observed along-track data, geostrophic currents and eddy kinetic energy estimated from standard gridded maps are too weak by a factor of 33% and 50%, respectively. A new mapping approach is proposed to better resolve the local mesoscale variability. It uses the larger wavelengths of the standard gridded maps as a first guess and adds an increment based on the short scale signals of the along-track data. Abstract: Hydrological data from the western coast of Australia to 110°E are used together with direct velocity observations to investigate the water mass distribution and the associated circulation. High spatial variability reflects advective features related to the turbulent character of the Leeuwin region. The correlation between the sea surface temperature and the sea surface salinity distributions and the upper layer circulation depicts a southward warm and fresh Leeuwin Current along the coast with several branchings and three anticyclonic eddies offshore. The strongest eddy includes a thick surface mixed layer of 220m and perturbs the hydrological structure down to more than 2000m. The net transports through the four sections are northward in the upper layers with larger transports through the southern sections, which imply a westward transport just north of Abrolhos Islands. In the intermediate and deep-water layers, the net transport is southward across the southern section and divergent, implying an eastern inflow around 29°S. The data confirm that Subantarctic Mode Water is spreading north while the Antarctic Intermediate Water appears to recirculate to the south along the eastern rim of the Perth Basin. The dynamic optimal interpolation (DOI) method merges altimetric sea surface height (SSH) data into maps that are continuous in time and space. Unlike the traditional linear optimal interpolation (LOI) method, DOI has the advantage of considering a nonlinear temporal propagation of the SSH field. DOI has been successfully applied to along-track pseudo-observations in observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs), demonstrating a reduction in interpolation error in highly turbulent regions compared to LOI mapping. In the present study, we further extend the validation of the DOI method by an observing system experiment (OSE). We applied and validated the DOI approach with real nadir-altimetric observations in four regional configurations. Overall, the qualitative and quantitative assessments of these realistic SSHmaps confirmthe higher level of performance of the DOI approach in turbulent regions. It is more of a challenge to outperform the conventional LOI mapping in coastal and low-energy regions. Validations against LOI maps distributed by the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service indicate a 10%-15% increase in average performance and an improved resolution limit toward shorter wavelengths. Societal dependence on, and commercial and scientific exploitation of Earth-Oriented remote sensing from satellites is growing at an exponential rate. The comprehensive EU Copernicus programme provides a major contribution to the global effort, but even so, to achieve the necessary global and temporal coverage requires synergistic cooperation and associated interoperability of the Worlds sensors. For a user to exploit Earth Observation (EO) data there must exist confidence in data characteristics, quality and reliable delivery. Although long-term data records for climate may be the most demanding in nature, generation of analysis-ready operational data sets for applications, as diverse as food security to pollution monitoring, all require the user to have some quantitative level of confidence in the data and derived information. A long-term Calibration/Validation (Cal/Val) vision necessitates clear ownership and long-term funding. Delineating the roles of the European Commission (EC), space agencies and member states in long-term Cal/Val would provide clarity. It is clear that the space agencies have the responsibility to meet the mission requirement of their spaceborne instruments but long-term validation is often entrusted to interested parties bringing their own resources to the task. Furthermore, there is a critical need for Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRMs), acquired in operational mode, and comprehensive in coverage both spatially and temporally, to assure that the satellite product accuracies are met. This paper discusses the current status, gaps and challenges regarding long-term Cal/Val of EO satellites and recommends the creation of a European coordinating entity for satellite product calibration and validation. The proposed entity would be an integrative organization coordinating the European Cal/Val activities in partnership with the member states and the space agencies and working together with existing data providers to secure access to satellite and in-situ data of traceable FRM standards. Adding azimuth diversity to InSAR - for example, with squinted SAR beams - vectors of ocean surface current and wind are measured for each single pass ([13]; [11]), exploring new physical processes including fronts, waves, and submesoscales ([14]; [23]). For both coastal and global scales, the joint measurements of wind, waves, and currents open up great opportunities for science and applications linked to ocean-atmosphere coupling and feedbacks, including the ocean energy cycle, from the wind work to the energy cascade in the ocean circulation. The additional measurement of ocean wave spectra should lead to a better understanding of the relation between currents and waves (e.g., [1]) and their impact on extreme sea states (e.g., [10]) and upper-ocean turbulence ([9], [23]). The Mediterranean Sea exhibits an intense mesoscale activity superimposed on its mean circulation. It is highly constrained by the basin shape which is quite narrow, and the mesoscale eddies are strongly impacted by the coastal bathymetry and orographic effects. We give some insight of their description. The detection and tracking of mesoscale eddies are performed by the AMEDA algorithm (DOI : 10.1175/JTECH-D-17-0010.1), based on daily absolute dynamic topography maps. AMEDA provides the daily contours of the eddies and some dynamical parameters (Radius, maximal velocity, Rossby number, etc). A data base of these tracked eddies is available over the Mediterranean Sea for the period 2000-2017. In this study, in situ temperature and salinity profiles from the CORA database (DOI : 10.5194/os-9-1-2013) are colocalised with the ~11500 AMEDA trajectories available from 2000 to 2016 over the entire Mediterranean Sea. We have 684 anticyclonic trajectories and 1128 cyclonic trajectories monitored by these in situ measurements, sampled by 8440 and 12876 profiles, respectively.There is a large diversity of mesoscale structures captured by the analysed altimetric fields, spanning a wide range of time and space scales. Here we focus on the Pelops and Ierapetra Eddies. These two large and recurrent anticyclonic eddies are easily tracked over months ; the Pelops eddies are generated South of the Pelopponese Peninsula and the Ierapetra eddies at the South Eastern corner of Crete. 3 Pelops eddies and 3 Ierapetra eddies lasting more than one year are identified, with in situ sampling between 20 and 120 times. We have described their vertical structure, taking into account their variations across their radius and over the eddy's lifetimes, and highlight their similarities and differences. These eddies appear as globally positive temperature and salinity anomalies compared to their environnement. We also investigate whether the local vertical displacement of the water column due to the passing eddy (heaving) or the lateral transport of water in their cores from the generating area (horizontal advection) contribute most to these thermohaline anomalies. The stronger the eddy, the deeper the vertical displacement of isopycnals inducing local temperature and salinity anomalies. The anomalies due to horizontal advection are localized within the eddy's core and are enhanced when the local environment differs greatly from that at the eddy's generation position. The India-France SARAL/AltiKa mission is the first Ka-band altimetric mission dedicated primarily to oceanography. The mission objectives were firstly the observation of the oceanic mesoscales but also global and regional sea level monitoring, including the coastal zone, data assimilation, and operational oceanography. SARAL/AltiKa proved also to be a great opportunity for inland waters applications, for observing ice sheet or icebergs, as well as for geodetic investigations. The mission ended its nominal phase after three years in orbit and began a new phase (drifting orbit) in July 2016. The objective of this paper is to highlight some of the most remarkable achievements of the SARAL/AltiKa mission in terms of scientific applications. Compared to the standard Ku-band altimetry measurements, the Ka-band provides substantial improvements in terms of spatial resolution and data accuracy. We show here that this leads to remarkable advances in terms of observation of the mesoscale and coastal ocean, waves, river water levels, ice sheets, icebergs, fine scale bathymetry features as well as for the many related applications. In situ measurements of sea surface temperature (SST), salinity (SSS), Total Alkalinity (A T) and Total Carbon (C T) were obtained during austral summer (mid-February to mid-March) from 2005 to 2019 in the Southern Ocean (SO), along a transect between Hobart, Tasmania and Dumont d'Urville French Antarctic Station. The studied transect is divided in four regions from North to South: the Subtropical Zone (STZ), the Subantarctic Region (SAR), the Antarctic Region (AAR) and the Coastal Antarctic Zone (CAZ). Latitudinal distribution of measured SST, SSS, A T , C T as well as calculated pH, CO 2 parameters (seawater fugacity of CO 2 (fCO 2sw), difference between seawater and atmospheric fCO 2 (ΔfCO 2), CO 2 flux (FCO 2)) and satellite-derived Chlorophyll a (Chl-a) are discussed. We show that the variability of physical and carbonate parameters in the STZ and north of the SAR are related to the mesoscale activity. In the CAZ, the freshwater inputs from sea-ice melting strongly impact the variability of all parameters. The comparison between physical and carbonate parameters highlights that A T and C T are directly related to the latitudinal variability of SST and SSS. Study of the CO 2 parameters shows that the transect is a sink of CO 2 during February and March, with a mean FCO 2 of −4.0 ± 2.8 mmol m−2 d−1. The most negative values of FCO 2 are found in the STZ and SAR north of 50°S and in the AAR south of 62°S, where biological activity is high. New simple empirical relationships are developed for A T from SST and SSS and for C T using SST, SSS and atmospheric fCO 2 (fCO 2atm) for the austral summer in the studied area. Using high resolution SSS and SST from the SURVOSTRAL program, trends of A T and C T are determined in the SAR and the AAR from 2005 to 2019. SST, SSS and A T increase over this period in the SAR, which might be explained by the southward migration of the Subtropical Front. In the AAR, no clear trend is detected. C T increases by 1.0 ± 0.2 and 0.8 ± 0.3 μmol kg−1 yr−1 in the SAR and AAR respectively. The trend in the AAR is attributed to the increase in anthropogenic CO 2 emissions in the atmosphere while, in the SAR, hydrographic changes also contribute to the increase. Using the coefficient associated with fCO 2atm in the equation of C T , we estimate the impact of atmospheric CO 2 increase on C T at 1.18 ± 0.14 μmol kg−1 yr−1 and 1.07 ± 0.13 μmol kg−1 yr−1 in the SAR and AAR respectively. Due to its dire impacts on marine life, public health, and socio-economic services, oil spills require an immediate response. Effective action starts with good knowledge of the ocean dynamics and circulation, from which Lagrangian methods derive key information on the dispersal pathways present in the contaminated region. However, precise assessments of the capacity of Lagrangian methods in real contamination cases remain rare and limited to large slicks spanning several hundreds of km. Here we address this knowledge gap and consider two medium-scale (tens of km wide) events of oil in contrasting conditions: an offshore case (East China Sea, 2018) and a recent near-coastal one (East Mediterranean, 2021). Our comparison between oil slicks and Lagrangian diagnostics derived from near-real-time velocity fields shows that the calculation of Lagrangian fronts is, in general, more robust to errors in the velocity fields and more informative on the dispersion pathways than the direct advection of a numerical tracer. The inclusion of the effect of wind is also found to be essential, being capable of suddenly breaking Lagrangian transport barriers. Finally, we show that a usually neglected Lagrangian quantity, the Lyapunov vector, can be exploited to predict the front drifting speed, and in turn, its future location over a few days, on the basis of near-real-time information alone. These results may be of special relevance in the context of next-generation altimetry missions that are expected to provide highly resolved and precise near-real-time velocity fields for both open ocean and coastal regions. Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) is the name given to the relatively deep surface mixed layers found directly north of the Subantarctic Front in the Southern Ocean, and their extension into the thermocline as weakly stratified or low potential vorticity water masses. The objective of this study is to begin an investigation into the mechanisms controlling SAMW formation, through a heat budget calculation. ARGO profiling floats provide estimates of temperature and salinity typically in the upper 2,000 m and the horizontal velocity at various parking depths. These data are used to estimate terms in the mode water heat budget; in addition, mode water circulation is determined with ARGO data and earlier ALACE float data, and climatological hydrography. We find a rapid transition to thicker layers in the central South Indian Ocean, at about 70°S, associated with a reversal of the horizontal eddy heat diffusion in the surface layer and the meridional expansion of the ACC as it rounds the Kerguelen Plateau. These effects are ultimately related to the bathymetry of the region, leading to the seat of formation in the region southwest of Australia. Upstream of this region, the dominant terms in the heat budget are the air–sea flux, eddy diffusion, and Ekman heat transport, all having approximately equal importance. Analysis of the radar echoes from a spaceborne altimeter gives information on sea surface height, wave height and wind speed, as well as other parameters over land and ice. The first spaceborne radar altimeter was pioneered on Skylab in 1974. Since then, there have been about 20 further missions, with several advances in the sophistication of hardware and complexity of processing with the aim of increased accuracy and precision. Because of that, the importance of regular and precise calibration and validation ("cal/val") remains undiminished, especially with efforts to merge altimetric records from multiple missions spanning different domains and time periods. This special issue brings together 19 papers, with a focus on the recent missions (Jason-2, Jason-3, Sentinel-3A and HY-2B) as well as detailing the issues for anticipated future missions such as SWOT. This editorial provides a brief guide to the approaches and issues for cal/val of the various different derived parameters, including a synopsis of the papers in this special issue. The article presents an overview of articles concerning different topics on ocean dynamics in honor of the late ocean research scientist Christian Le Provost. His principal field of interest was ocean tides, including ocean tidal modeling. Le Provost has been involved in the development of higher resolution ocean numerical circulation models and ocean forecasting systems.
