To reconstruct a fossil forest in three dimensions, an accurate estimation of tree height is crucial. However, modelling the height-diameter relationship of ancient trees is difficult, because the trunks of fossil trees are usually fragmentary, making direct height measurements impossible. One practical approach for reconstructing ancient tree height is to use growth models based on the height-diameter relationships of the nearest living relatives of fossil taxa. Here we apply 19 models to describe height-diameter relationships of living Araucaria trees for establishing appropriate models for ancient Araucariaceae trees. Data come from four living populations of Araucaria: A. bidwillii and A. cunninghamii in Queensland, Australia, and A. cunninghamii and A. hunsteinii in New Guinea. According to an AIC-based model selection, a power function with an exponent of 0.67 (termed here the modified Mosbrugger model) is found to be the most appropriate for each population and for the entire dataset (157 trees), but normalization constants differ across populations. To find the most appropriate models for the genus Araucaria, 100 random samples (each population generating 25 random samples) from the entire dataset are used. Based on 100 curve fitting results on each model and multiple performance criteria, three median models are generated from the medians of their parameter estimates. Of these, the median 2pPower model works best for Araucaria, but the modified Mosbrugger and Curtis models perform nearly as well. The Wanakah Formation and Tidwell Member of the Morrison Formation record intervals of paedogenesis in the Paradox Basin and Central Colorado trough, western Colorado during the Middle-Late Jurassic. Detailed field description of paleosols and paedogenic carbonates at different stratigraphic horizons from three localities document four main pedotypes: vertisols, gleysols, oxisols, and protosols. Generally, gleysols reflect reducing conditions, protosols and oxisols reflect oxidizing conditions, and vertisols reflect fluctuations in oxidizing/reducing conditions (seasonality). Major elemental geochemical ratios in samples from these paleosols suggest variable redox conditions and a sub-humid to humid paleoclimate with seasonal precipitations during paleosol development. Estimated mean annual temperature based on elemental analyses of paleosol B in paleosols from Ribbon Trail and Escalante Canyon in western Colorado suggest mesic – thermic paleoclimate. Mean annual precipitation indicates sub-humid to humid regional palaeoclimatic conditions marked by seasonal precipitation. Clay mineralogy of these paleosols, determined by X-ray diffraction, shows the abundance of illite most likely formed from smectite alteration due to episodic wetting and drying. δ13C and δ18O isotope analyses of carbonate veins in these paleosols suggest that they formed recently from meteoric water and therefore are not considered for palaeoclimatic reconstructions. Mean annual temperature and mean annual precipitation estimates in the Wanakah Formation and Tidwell Member of the Morrison Formation provide new information on the local and regional palaeoclimatic and paleoenvironmental conditions during the Middle Jurassic in western Colorado as well as data for comparison with the Upper Morrison paleoclimate from northern and southern localities in the western United States. Here, we describe a pathological sub-adult theropod dinosaur from the Late Jurassic Morrison Formation in Dana Quarry, Wyoming, U.S.A. It exhibits multiple pathologies, involving three dorsal vertebrae, the right scapula and coracoid, and apparent pathology of the left scapula. The fourth dorsal vertebra has four irregularly shaped growths on the vertebral arch. The eighth and ninth vertebrae are fused. The scapulocoracoid joint has an obvious deformity. The distal part of the right scapula is more rounded than normal. The left scapula has a depression on the lateral blade. These pathologies can be identified as follows: the fourth dorsal vertebra is possibly neoplastic or exhibiting compensatory hyperplasia; the eighth and ninth vertebral and the right scapular pathology are consistent with spondyloarthropathy. Diagnoses considered for the left scapula pathology are infections, trauma or unknown. The animal survived the pathologies, which are unlikely the cause of its death. We describe a new, small-bodied rhynchocephalian reptile, Opisthiamimus gregori gen. et sp. nov., from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of Wyoming, USA. Whereas many fossil rhynchocephalians are based on isolated incomplete jaws, the holotype of O. gregori includes most of the skull and postcranium and therefore represents one of the most complete specimens of Rhynchocephalia known from North America. We used micro-computed tomography to examine its skeletal anatomy in detail and to develop a three-dimensional reconstruction of the skull. The skull of O. gregori is similar to that of several non-neosphenodontian rhynchocephalians such as Planocephalosaurus (e.g. large orbits) and Clevosaurus (e.g. parietal parasagittal crests) yet exhibits a suite of other features related to the proal shearing mechanism that becomes increasingly elaborated among more phylogenetically nested taxa such as Sphenodon (e.g. lateral palatine tooth row parallels maxillary tooth row along its entire length, pyramidal dentary teeth with mesial shearing crests). The postcranial skeleton of O. gregori exhibits characteristics typical of a terrestrial rhynchocephalian. Our phylogenetic analyses use a substantially updated data set of 118 characters and 46 taxa, and both maximum parsimony and Bayesian frameworks. Results place O. gregori inside Eusphenodontia but outside Neosphenodontia, and therefore in a key position for contributing to character polarity for more deeply nested clades such as Clevosauridae, Sphenodontidae and Pleurosauridae. We also erect Leptorhynchia taxon nov., composed primarily of aquatically adapted taxa (e.g. Pleurosaurus, Sapheosaurus), which is supported by both cranial and postcranial characters. Because O. gregori is not particularly closely related to the other named Morrison rhynchocephalians (e.g. Opisthias rarus), it increases both the alpha and beta taxonomic diversities within the formation. Similarly, major differences in body size and inferred diet of the Morrison taxa imply considerable concomitant palaeoecological diversity just prior to a major global decline in rhynchocephalian diversity around the close of the Jurassic. Cifellilestes ciscoensis gen. et sp. nov. possesses derived features of the snout paired with plesiomorphic construction of the molars; the distal premolars are complex and there is an unusually low count (two) of strongly imbricated molars. This character combination expands craniodental variation for the group. We sampled mudstone from the Cisco Mammal Quarry for ash-fall zircon analysis and obtained a date of 151.50 ± 0.28 Ma. This dates the locality to the earliest Tithonian and slightly younger than other major dated mammal-bearing localities in the Morrison Formation. The first fossil hemipteran from the Late Jurassic of North America, Morrisonnepa jurassica n. gen. et n. sp., is reported and described from the Morrison Formation, Jurassic Salad Bar locality, San Juan County, Utah, USA. The new specimen is characterised and illustrated, showing morphological characters similar to nepomorphs such as forewing well-developed and folded flat on the abdomen, oval abdomen shape, and the presence of a short pair of appendages. The taxonomic allocation close to members of the Nepomorpha is discussed. Morrisonnepa jurassica n. gen. et n. sp. was collected with abundant plants, spinicaudatan carapaces, and a small amphibian from a finely laminated shale that overlies a coarser plant debris bed, supporting the presence of a possible oxbow lake or pond, environments developed within the greater ecosystem of the Morrison Formation during the Late Jurassic. In this context, we analyse the taphonomic and palaeoecological implications of the presence of aquatic insects. Besides providing morphological information on Jurassic nepomorphs, the new fossil helps illustrate how the aquatic insect assemblage was integrated during the Jurassic in North America. Two partial skeletons from Montana represent the northernmost occurrences of Stegosauria within North America. One of these specimens represents the northernmost dinosaur fossil ever recovered from the Morrison Formation. Consisting of fragmentary cranial and postcranial remains, these specimens are contributing to our knowledge of the record and distribution of dinosaurs within the Morrison Formation from Montana. While the stegosaurs of the Morrison Formation consist of Alcovasaurus, Hesperosaurus, and Stegosaurus, the only positively identified stegosaur from Montana thus far is Hesperosaurus. Unfortunately, neither of these new specimens exhibit diagnostic autapomorphies. Nonetheless, these specimens are important data points due to their geographic significance, and some aspects of their morphologies are striking. In one specimen, the teeth express a high degree of wear usually unobserved within this clade--potentially illuminating the progression of the chewing motion in derived stegosaurs. Other morphologies, though not histologically examined in this analysis, have the potential to be important indicators for maturational inferences. In suite with other specimens from the northern extent of the formation, these specimens contribute to the ongoing discussion that body size may be latitudinally significant for stegosaurs--an intriguing geographical hypothesis which further emphasizes that size is not an undeviating proxy for maturity in dinosaurs. Jurassic paleomagnetic data from North America have long been contentious, generating ambiguities in the shape of the global‐composite apparent polar wander path. Here we show from a restudy of two subdivisions of the Late Jurassic Morrison Formation at the classic locality at Norwood on the Colorado Plateau that the derived paleopoles reflect variable overprinting probably in the Cretaceous and are of limited value for apparent polar wander determination. We instead assembled an updated set of Jurassic paleopoles from parauthocthonous Adria, the African promontory, using primary paleomagnetic component directions derived from stratigraphically superposed intervals and corrected for sedimentary inclination error. These paleopoles are found to be in superb agreement with independent igneous paleopoles from the literature across the so‐called Jurassic monster polar shift, which in North American coordinates is a jump of ~30° arc distance from the 190‐ to 160‐Ma stillstand pole at 79.5°N 104.8°E to a 148 ± 3.5‐Ma pole at 60.8°N 200.6°E defined by four Adria sedimentary paleopoles and the published Ithaca, Hinlopenstretet, and Swartsruggens‐Bumbeni igneous paleopoles. The implied high rate of polar motion of ~2.5°/Myr across the monster shift is compatible with maximum theoretical estimates for true polar wander. We include a critique of published Jurassic paleomagnetic data that have been variably used in reference APWPs but that as a result of their low quality muted the real magnitude of the Jurassic monster shift. Finally, we provide paleocontinental reconstructions to describe examples of the bold signature that the monster polar shift left in the distribution of climate‐sensitive sedimentary facies worldwide. Thin hydrocarbon reservoir facies pose resolution challenges and waveform-signature opportunities in seismic reservoir characterization and prospect identification. In this study, we present a case study, where instantaneous frequency variation in response to a thin hydrocarbon pay zone is analyzed and integrated with other independent information to explain drilling results and optimize future drilling decisions. In Morrison NE Field, some wells with poor economics have resulted from well-placement incognizant of reservoir heterogeneities. The study area in Clark County, Kanas, USA, has been covered by a surface 3D seismic reflection survey in 2010. The target horizon is the Viola limestone, which continues to produce from 7 of the 12 wells drilled within the survey area. Seismic attributes extraction and analyses were conducted with emphasis on instantaneous attributes and amplitude anomalies to better understand and predict reservoir heterogeneities and their control on hydrocarbon entrapment settings. We have identified a higher instantaneous frequency, lower amplitude seismic facies that is in good agreement with distinct lithofacies that exhibit better (higher porosity) reservoir properties, as inferred from well-log analysis and petrographic inspection of well cuttings. This study presents a pre-drilling, data-driven approach of identifying sub-resolution reservoir seismic facies in a carbonate formation. This workflow will assist in placing new development wells in other locations within the area. Our low amplitude high instantaneous frequency seismic reservoir facies have been corroborated by findings based on well logs, petrographic analysis data, and drilling results. Recently developed data collection techniques allow for improved characterization of sedimentary outcrops. Here, we outline a workflow that utilizes unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry to produce sub-meter-scale outcrop reconstructions in 3-D. SfM photogrammetry uses multiple overlapping images and an image-based terrain extraction algorithm to reconstruct the location of individual points from the photographs in 3-D space. The results of this technique can be used to construct point clouds, orthomosaics, and digital surface models that can be imported into GIS and related software for further study. The accuracy of the reconstructed outcrops, with respect to an absolute framework, is improved with geotagged images or independently gathered ground control points, and the internal accuracy of 3-D reconstructions is sufficient for sub-meter scale measurements. We demonstrate this approach with a case study from central Utah, USA, where UAV-SfM data can help delineate complex features within Jurassic fluvial sandstones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent construction at the Moab Giants dinosaur museum property ~ 10 miles (~ 16 km) north of Moab, in Grand County, Utah in 2014–2015 revealed a number of moderately well preserved dinosaur tracks from the Upper Jurassic, Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation. The best specimens were preserved as natural casts on the underside of massive sandstone beds, many containing dense assemblages of invertebrate traces. Here we describe several tridactyl theropod tracks, an ornithischian manus attributable to ichnogenus Stegopodus and an ornithischian pes track attributed to ichnogenus Deltapodus . Variably preserved Deltapodus have now been reported from the Tidwell, Salt Wash and Brushy Basin members of the Morrison Formation from Garfield, Grand and San Juan counties respectively, suggesting a wide distribution in space and time. The Salt Wash specimen is considered to be the most representative of Deltapodus morphologies reported from large samples in other regions, notably in Spain, Portugal western China and North Africa. Differences between Stegopodus and Deltapodus are reviewed. Deltapodus is reported from Europe and Asia as well as North America, in the Middle Jurassic through Late Cretaceous, and is often represented by abundant trackways. Stegopodus is presently reported from the Jurassic where it occurs in the Late Jurassic of North America as isolated tracks, and, with some debate, as trackways and isolated tracks from Europe. Nearly 150 occurrences of turtles and neosuchian crocodyliforms in the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation indicate that, by number of localities and number of specimens, both are preferentially preserved off the Colorado Plateau in deposits in the eastern and northern parts of the Morrison basin, suggesting that these latter areas contained wetter paleoenvironments and either were more populated with these semi-aquatic taxa or more frequently preserved their remains, compared with areas to the south and west. Cursorial crocodylomorphs occur at more sites and in greater numbers on the Colorado Plateau than to the east and north, but this pattern is only significant by number of specimens. Previous suggestions of wetter paleoenvironmental conditions on floodplains distal to the southwestern source areas on the Colorado Plateau, or western source areas for northern outcrops, based on geological and microvertebrate data, seem to be borne out by these data from semi-aquatic mesovertebrates. Sauropod dinosaurs have been found in sediments dating to most of the Cretaceous Period on all major Mesozoic landmasses, but this record is spatiotemporally uneven, even in relatively well-explored North American sediments. Within the 80 million-year-span of the Cretaceous, no definitive sauropod occurrences are known in North America from two ca. 20–25 million-year-long gaps, one from approximately the Berriasian–Barremian and the other from the mid-Cenomanian–late Campanian. Herein, we present an undescribed specimen that was collected in the middle part of the twentieth century that expands the known spatiotemporal distribution of Early Cretaceous North American sauropods, partially filling the earlier gap. The material is from the Berriasian–Valanginian-aged (ca. 139 Ma) Chilson Member of the Lakota Formation of South Dakota and appears to represent the only non-titanosauriform from the Cretaceous of North America or Asia. Herein we describe pathological manual and pedal phalanges of a camarasaurid sauropod (SMA 0002), which show features rarely recognised in non-avian dinosaurs. They include lateral osteophytes and smoothing of phalangeal articular surfaces, a deep pit, proximal enthesophytes in pedal unguals, distal overgrowth associated with a fracture, and a knob-like overgrowth lateral to the distal condyles of a pedal phalanx. Their causes were assessed by means of visual examination, CT scans, and bone histology, where possible. The lateral osteophytes are interpreted as symptoms of osteoarthritis. The ossified tendon insertions in the unguals are most probably the result of prolonged, heavy use of the pedal claws, possibly for scratch-digging. The distal overgrowth is interpreted to have developed due to changed stress regimes, and to be the cause for the fracture. The deep pit represents most likely a case of osteochondrosis, whereas the knob-like overgrowth likely represents a post-traumatic phenomenon not previously reported in dinosaurs. Although the type section of the Morrison Formation, near Denver Colorado, now also well-known as Dinosaur Ridge, has since 1877 been world famous as the source of iconic Late Jurassic dinosaurs like Stegosaurus , Apatosaurus , and Diplodocus , little detailed information has been published on fossil footprints from the formation in this area. Late Jurassic (Morrison) footprints were not reported from the type section at Dinosaur Ridge until the early 1990s. Since then, other footprints have been reported, and their precise stratigraphic occurrences documented. To date, diagnostic examples of theropod, sauropod, and thyreophoran (stegosaur) tracks have been documented from at least three different locations. The quality of preservation of these tracks ranges from moderately good to quite poor. Nevertheless, more than 25 individual footprints, including some undertracks, have been identified unequivocally, including several manus–pes sets of quadrupedal trackmakers. The track assemblages are typical of many small Morrison Formation ichnofaunas and are consistent with what is known of the body fossil assemblages. Redescription of a trackway from the Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation (Upper Jurassic) in eastern Utah and comparisons with other tracks known from the Jurassic and Cretaceous of the region and the Late Jurassic globally indicate that the large theropod ichnogenusHispanosauropusMensink and Mertmann, 1984, previously known only from Europe, occurs also in the Morrison Formation.Hispanosauropusis distinct fromMegalosauripusand most likely was made by an allosauroid theropod, although the possibility that it was made by a spinosauroid (torvosaurid) or a ceratosauroid cannot be ruled out. A new specimen of the theropod dinosaurTorvosaurus tanneridiscovered by Elmer Riggs in 1899 in the Freezeout Hills of Wyoming and held in the Field Museum of Natural History is described. This specimen demonstrates that unreported material of this species has been present in museum collections 80 years prior to the species' scientific description and it likely represents the first non-dental material of this species to be collected. This material comprises parts of the left foot and right hand, including phalanges which were previously unknown forTorvosaurus, and substantiates the possibility that otherTorvosaurusmaterial may be undiscovered in museum collections. Its occurrence in a multitaxon quarry is consistent with other skeletal finds ofTorvosaurus, all or most of which occur in association with other, more common Morrison dinosaur taxa. We present the first study of bone micro structure in Suuwassea emilieae, a diplodocoid sauropod from the Morrison Formation. Although the holotype of Suuwassea was recently identified as a subadult, bone histology demonstrates that this individual had reached sexual maturity at approximately 75-80% of maximum adult size. The smaller size of the holotype of Suuwassea relative to contemporary sauropods is due to ontogeny rather than a true reflection of adult size. A fully adult individual would have likely been similar in size to a fully adult specimen ofApatosaurus. Suuwassea has a number of plesiomorphic characters that might have been explained by its supposed early ontogenetic status, and would then have called the validity of the taxon into question. However, our demonstration that it was an adult confirms that these features represent retention of plesiomorphic character states or evolutionary reversals in a derived animal. Additionally, the specimen shows extensive cortical drift and secondary osteon formation related to skeletal loading, which is often obscured by complete remodeling of Haversian systems in sauropod taxa. There are substantial differences in the micro structure across the bone, which could make histologic samples not based upon complete cross sections problematic. A new taxon of diplodocid sauropod,Kaatedocus siberigen. et sp. nov., is recognized based on well-preserved cervical vertebrae and skull from the Morrison Formation (Kimmeridgian, Late Jurassic) of northern Wyoming, USA. A phylogenetic analysis places it inside Diplodocinae (Sauropoda: Flagellicaudata: Diplodocidae), as a sister taxon to a clade unitingTornieria africanaand the classical diplodocinesBarosaurus lentusandDiplodocus. The taxon is diagnosed by a unique combination of plesiomorphic and derived traits, as well as the following unambiguous autapomorphies within Diplodocidae: frontals separated anteriorly by a U-shaped notch; squamosals restricted to the post-orbital region; presence of a postparietal foramen; a narrow, sharp and distinct sagittal nuchal crest; the paired basal tuber with a straight anterior edge in ventral view; anterior end of the prezygapophyses of mid- and posterior cervical vertebrae is often an anterior extension of the pre-epipophysis, which projects considerably anterior to the articular facet; anterodorsal corner of the lateral side of the posterior cervical vertebrae marked by a rugose tuberosity; posterior margin of the prezygapophyseal articular facet of posterior cervical vertebrae bordered posteriorly by conspicuous transverse sulcus; posterior cervical neural spines parallel to converging. The inclusion ofK. siberiand several newly described characters into a previously published phylogenetic analysis recovers the new taxon as basal diplodocine, which concurs well with the low stratigraphical position of the holotype specimen.DinheirosaurusandSupersaurusnow represent the sister clade toApatosaurusand Diplodocinae and therefore the most basal diplodocid genera. Discovery of a pelvis attributed to the Late Jurassic armor-plated dinosaur Gargoyleosaurus sheds new light on the origin of the peculiar non-vertical, broad, flaring pelvis of ankylosaurs. It further substantiates separation of the two ankylosaurs from the Morrison Formation of the western United States, Gargoyleosaurus and Mymoorapelta. Although horizontally oriented and lacking the medial curve of the preacetabular process seen in Mymoorapelta, the new ilium shows little of the lateral flaring seen in the pelvis of Cretaceous ankylosaurs. Comparison with the basal thyreophoran Scelidosaurus demonstrates that the ilium in ankylosaurs did not develop entirely by lateral rotation as is commonly believed. Rather, the preacetabular process rotated medially and ventrally and the postacetabular process rotated in opposition, i.e., lateral and ventrally. Thus, the dorsal surfaces of the preacetabular and postacetabular processes are not homologous. In contrast, a series of juvenile Stegosaurus ilia show that the postacetabular process rotated dorsally ontogenetically. Thus, the pelvis of the two major types of Thyreophora most likely developed independently. Examination of other ornithischians show that a non-vertical ilium had developed independently in several different lineages, including ceratopsids, pachycephalosaurs, and iguanodonts. The Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of western North America has yielded a number of specimens assigned to the ornithischian dinosaurs Stegosaurus and Camptosaurus, and many of these specimens come from channel sandstone deposits. Six new specimens are recorded mostly from channel sandstones as well. Indeed, early analyses of site occurrences (reducing the effects of large single-site samples) suggested that Stegosaurus and Camptosaurus were more often found in channel sandstone deposits than other common Morrison Formation dinosaurs such as Camarasaurus or Diplodocus. This also indicated the possibility of ecological segregation of the former two genera from other herbivorous dinosaurs of the Morrison. Revisiting this question with additional data suggests the pattern may not be as strong as it once appeared. Analysis of occurrence data indicates that Stegosaurus and Camptosaurus occur in channel sandstone deposits slightly more frequently than the two sauropods, but statistical analysis of this pattern by either localities or individuals indicates little significance to the trend. However, Camptosaurus appears more strongly associated with channel sandstone deposits relative to other dinosaurs than does Stegosaurus. It has recently been argued that neural spine bifurcation increases through ontogeny in several Morrison Formation sauropods, that recognition of ontogenetic transformation in this 'key character' will have sweeping implications for sauropod phylogeny, and that Suuwassea and Haplocanthosaurus in particular are likely to be juveniles of known diplodocids. However, we find that serial variation in sauropod vertebrae can mimic ontogenetic change and is therefore a powerful confounding factor, especially when dealing with isolated elements whose serial position cannot be determined. When serial position is taken into account, there is no evidence that neural spine bifurcation increased over ontogeny in Morrison Formation diplodocids. Through phylogenetic analysis we show that neural spine bifurcation is not a key character in sauropod phylogeny and that Suuwassea and Haplocanthosaurus are almost certainly not juveniles of known diplodocids. Skeletochronology based on the sequence of skeletal fusions during ontogeny can provide relative ontogenetic ages for some sauropods. Although such data are sparsely available to date and often inconsistent among sauropod genera they provide another line of evidence for testing hypotheses of ontogenetic synonymy. Investigation of the palaeoclimatic conditions associated with Upper Jurassic strata in Portugal and comparison with published palaeoclimate reconstructions of the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation in western North America provide important insights into the conditions that allowed two of the richest terrestrial faunas of this period to flourish. Geochemical analyses and observations of palaeosol morphology in the informally named Upper Jurassic Lourinhã formation of western Portugal indicate warm and wet palaeoclimatic conditions with strongly seasonal precipitation patterns. Palaeosol profiles are dominated by carbonate accumulations and abundant shrink-swell (vertic) features that are both indicative of seasonal variation in moisture availability. The δ18OSMOW and δDSMOW values of phyllosilicates sampled from palaeosol profiles range from +22·4‰ to +22·7‰ and −53·0‰ to −37·3‰, respectively. These isotope values correspond to temperatures of formation between 32°C and 39°C ± 3°, with an average of 36°C, which suggest surface temperatures between 27°C and 34°C (average 31°C). On average, these surface temperature estimates are 1°C higher than the highest summer temperatures modelled for Late Jurassic Iberia using general circulation models. Elemental analysis of matrix material from palaeosol B-horizons provides proxy (chemical index of alteration minus potassium) estimates of mean annual precipitation ranging from 766 to 1394 mm/year, with an average of approximately 1100 mm/year. Palaeoclimatic conditions during deposition of the Lourinhã formation are broadly similar to those inferred for the Morrison Formation, except somewhat wetter. Seasonal variation in moisture availability does not seem to have negatively impacted the ability of these environments to support rich and relatively abundant faunas. Although diplodocoid sauropods from Africa and the Americas are well known, their European record remains largely neglected. Here we redescribe Dinheirosaurus lourinhanensis from the Late Jurassic of Portugal. The holotype comprises two posterior cervical vertebrae, the dorsal series and a caudal centrum. Redescription demonstrates its validity on the basis of three autapomorphies: (1) posteriorly restricted ventral keel on posterior cervical vertebrae; (2) three small subcircular fossae posterior to the lateral coel on posterior cervical neural spines; (3) accessory lamina linking the hyposphene with base of the posterior centrodiapophyseal lamina in middle-posterior dorsal vertebrae. Phylogenetic analysis places Dinheirosaurus as the sister taxon to Supersaurus, and this clade forms the sister taxon to other diplodocines. However, this position should be treated with caution as Dinheirosaurus displays several plesiomorphic features absent in other diplodocids (including unbifurcated presacral neural spines, and dorsolaterally projecting diapophyses on dorsal vertebrae) and only four additional steps are required to place Dinheirosaurus outside of Flagellicaudata. We identify Amazonsaurus as the basal-most rebbachisaurid and recover Zapalasaurus outside of the South American Limaysaurinae, suggesting the biogeographic history of rebbachisaurids is more complex than previously proposed. Review of the European diplodocoid record reveals evidence for the earliest known diplodocid, as well as additional diplodocid remains from the Late Jurassic of Spain. A Portuguese specimen, previously referred to Dinheirosaurus, displays strong similarities to Apatosaurus from the contemporaneous Morrison Formation of North America, indicating the presence of a second Late Jurassic Portuguese diplodocid taxon. Along with Dinheirosaurus, these Portuguese remains provide further evidence for a Late Jurassic palaeobiogeographic connection between Europe and North America. No dicraeosaurids are currently known from Europe, but rebbachisaurids are present in the Early Cretaceous, with weak evidence for the earliest known representative from the Late Jurassic of Spain; however, more complete material is required to recognize early members of this clade. A small new basal crocodyliform, Fruitachampsa callisoni gen. nov., sp. nov., is represented by several partial skeletons from the Morrison Formation at the Fruita Paleontological Area near Grand Junction, Colorado. It is placed in the Family Shartegosuchidae Efimov, 1988, previously comprising three genera from the Late Jurassic locality of Shar Teeg in western Mongolia and possibly a fourth genus from the Early Cretaceous of Siberia. Shartegosuchids share a sculpted palatal surface of the pterygoids, the absence of a mandibular fenestra, and posterior maxillary teeth and post-caniniform dentary teeth with a flat and horizontal apical region and vertical crenulations extending basally from it. Fruitachampsa and Shartegosuchus form a clade supported by ventral half of the lacrimal tapering ventroposteriorly, sculpturing on palatines, and lower teeth absent anterior to caniniforms. The shartegosuchids are most parsimoniously considered to be outside of the mesoeucrocodylian clade and are possibly allied with the Asian taxa Shantungosuchus, Sichuanosuchus, and Zosuchus. Fruitachampsa is unusual in possessing a series of small protuberances along the occipital margin of the parietal and squamosal and procoelous vertebrae, and lacking an antorbital fenestra or fossa. Abstract: The Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation has yielded some of the most important, voluminous and diverse dinosaur bonebeds in western North America, yet many of its historic sites were excavated during the celebrated period of vertebrate paleontology in western North America referred to as the first and second “Great Dinosaur Rush” (1870–1910s). Because of the large quantity of fossils collected during this era, a considerable amount of data pertaining to patterns of sedimentation, preservation, and paleoecology across broad portions of the Morrison Formation (and indeed many other Mesozoic and Cenozoic units) is still poorly understood. This paper critically re-evaluates the Sheridan College Quarry 1 dinosaur bonebed which lies along the western rim of the Powder River Basin in the region of localities excavated during Utterback''s expeditions in the 1900s. Sedimentologically, the bonebed is interpreted as having been formed by episodic flooding events affecting the proximal floodplain depocenter of a meandering river system. Limited evidence of bone abrasion or rounding and progressive upsection changes in bone orientations suggest that minimal transport occurred, but that at least four episodes of overbank flooding resulted in the concentration and burial of attritional, time averaged vertebrate skeletal material that accumulated in topographic lows on the floodplain. Taphonomic analysis indicates that multiple unassociated to partially associated fossil elements excavated represent at least three taxa of sauropod dinosaurs, whereas isolated elements from the site indicate the presence of several other small vertebrate taxa. This work provides significant new information not only about the Sheridan College Quarry 1, but also about local sedimentary and taphonomic conditions that were likely influential to burial and preservation of other nearby Morrison dinosaur localities in the Big Horn Mountains, most notably those excavated during the famous Utterback expeditions. Abstract: A screenwashed microvertebrate site, the Mile 175 locality, in the Morrison Formation of Wyoming has yielded more than 3000 elements of actinopterygian fish and indicates that fish were not as rare in some parts of the formation as previously supposed. Actinopterygians are represented by diverse teeth and tooth-bearing bone fragments, fin elements, and thousands of scales and scale fragments that can be divided into three distinct morphotypes. Lungfish are rare, represented by nine toothplates and toothplate fragments that are provisionally assigned to Potamoceratodus. Tetrapods recovered from the Mile 175 locality include indeterminate salamanders, turtles, choristoderes, a squamate, goniopholid crocodyliforms, theropod and ornithopod dinosaurs, and several mammals, including Docodon and indeterminate multituberculates. Salamanders are represented by just a few indeterminate vertebrae. The turtle fauna includes numerous small shell fragments and limb elements. The authors assign a tooth-bearing jaw fragment and several vertebrae to the choristodere Cteniogenys, whereas a sole vertebra is the only squamate fossil recovered. Theropod dinosaurs are well represented by several teeth, as is the ornithopod dinosaur Othnielosaurus. Similarly, several mammalian tooth and jaw fragments can be referred to either Docodon or Multituberculata indet. Dominance of the sample by aquatic and semi-aquatic taxa suggests the paleodepositional environment was a permanent water source. Many of the specimens appear to represent small and presumably ontogenetically young individuals of larger, known taxa in the Morrison Formation, and the site includes the northernmost occurrences of several taxa in the formation. Screenwashing efforts at several other previously quarried large-vertebrate sites in the Morrison Formation have shown promising results for recovering previously unidentified taxa. A new species of Orthoptera, Parapleurites morrisonensis, is described from the upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of Colorado, USA. This is the first insect described from the Morrison Formation and the first orthopteran described from the Jurassic of North America. No other members of the family Locustopsidae have been described in North America previously, and the other species of Parapleurites are only known from Siberia. The lack of Jurassic Orthoptera in North America is likely due to a combination of taphonomic variables and collector bias. The discovery of Parapleurites morrisonensis and the potential for finding other Jurassic Orthoptera are important to understanding the evolution of this diverse and widely distributed group. The ecosystem impact of megaherbivorous dinosaurs of the Morrison Formation would have depended on their abundance (number of animals per unit of habitat area) on the landscape. We constrain Morrison megaherbivore abundance by modelling dinosaur abundance in terms of carrying capacity (K), average body mass (ABM) and animal's energy needs. Two kinds of model are presented: 'demand-side' models that estimate K in terms of the aggregate energy demand of the dinosaur community, and 'supply-side' models that estimate K in terms of retrodicted primary productivity. Baseline values of K, ABM and energy needs for the models are further derived from comparisons with modern large herbivores, and from the composition of the megaherbivore fauna from a particular stratigraphic interval of the Morrison, but in all models a broad range of fractions and multiples of these baseline parameters are considered. 'Best-guess' estimates of Morrison megaherbivore abundance suggest an upper limit of a few hundred animals across all taxa and size classes per square kilometre, and up to a few tens of individuals of large subadults and adults. In previous work, a platform was developed for testing computer-vision algorithms for robotic planetary exploration. This platform consisted of a digital video camera connected to a wearable computer for real-time processing of images at geological and astrobiological field sites. The real-time processing included image segmentation and the generation of interest points based upon uncommonness in the segmentation maps. Also in previous work, this platform for testing computer-vision algorithms has been ported to a more ergonomic alternative platform, consisting of a phone camera connected via the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network to a remote-server computer. The wearable-computer platform has been tested at geological and astrobiological field sites in Spain (Rivas Vaciamadrid and Riba de Santiuste), and the phone camera has been tested at a geological field site in Malta. In this work, we (i) apply a Hopfield neural-network algorithm for novelty detection based upon colour, (ii) integrate a field-capable digital microscope on the wearable computer platform, (iii) test this novelty detection with the digital microscope at Rivas Vaciamadrid, (iv) develop a Bluetooth communication mode for the phone-camera platform, in order to allow access to a mobile processing computer at the field sites, and (v) test the novelty detection on the Bluetooth-enabled phone camera connected to a netbook computer at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah. This systems engineering and field testing have together allowed us to develop a real-time computer-vision system that is capable, for example, of identifying lichens as novel within a series of images acquired in semi-arid desert environments. We acquired sequences of images of geologic outcrops in Utah and Spain consisting of various rock types and colours to test this algorithm. The algorithm robustly recognized previously observed units by their colour, while requiring only a single image or a few images to learn colours as familiar, demonstrating its fast learning capability. We describe the first American stegosaur track of the ichnospecies Deltapodus brodricki, collected in the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of San Juan County, southeastern Utah, United States. The track is preserved as a natural cast on the underside of a slab of fluvial sandstone and consists of a well-preserved pes track and the eroded remains of a manus track. Previously, Deltapodus was known only from the Middle Jurassic Yorkshire coast of England and the Upper Jurassic of Portugal and Spain. The new discovery thus substantially extends the geographic record of this ichnospecies and highlights the similarities between the Late Jurassic dinosaur faunas of North America and those of Western Europe. Stratigraphic, provenance, and subsidence analyses suggest that by the Middle to Late Jurassic a foreland basin system was active in northwestern Montana (United States). U-Pb ages of detrital zircons and detrital modes of sandstones indicate provenance from accreted terranes and deformed miogeoclinal rocks to the west. Subsidence commenced ca. 170 Ma and followed a sigmoidal pattern characteristic of foreland basin systems. Thin Jurassic deposits of the Ellis Group and Morrison Formation accumulated in a backbulge depozone. A regional unconformity and/or paleosol zone separates the Morrison from Early Cretaceous foredeep deposits of the Kootenai Formation. The model presented here is consistent with regional deformation events registered in hinterland regions, and challenges previous interpretations of a strongly diachronous onset of Cordilleran foreland basin deposition from northwestern Montana to southern Canada. Abstract: Appendicular elements of the sauropod dinosaur Suuwassea emilieae, from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of Montana, USA, display a peculiar mix of autapomorphic and plesiomorphic features. While more similar in overall morphology to Apatosaurus than other flagellicaudatans, the coracoid of Suuwassea lacks the quadrangular shape of Apatosaurus. The humerus of Suuwassea bears a pronounced proximal tuberculum, a feature seen elsewhere only in saltasaurine titanosaurian sauropods. The rectangular proximal articular surface of the tibia is proportioned neither like Diplodocus nor Apatosaurus type specimens, although this region may be intraspecifically variable. The pes of Suuwassea possesses plesiomorphically elongate phalanges and a small, uncompressed ungual, unlike other flagellicaudatans except Dyslocosaurus. The localization of tooth marks on the pedal elements suggests that sauropod feet may have been singled out by scavengers, as has been noted for elephants. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Vertebrae of Suuwassea demonstrate an interesting combination of plesiomorphies and autapomorphies among known members of the Flagellicaudata. The cranial cervical vertebrae have proportions close to Diplodocus but resemble those of Apatosaurus except by having greatly reduced cranial and caudal spinozygapophyseal laminae. As a result, they have craniocaudally compressed, caudally positioned spinous processes excavated on all sides by fossae. The cranial thoracic vertebrae are again similarly proportioned as those of Diplodocus but are morphologically similar to those of Apatosaurus. The most distinguishing feature of Suuwassea caudal vertebrae are the short, amphiplatyan, distalmost ‘whiplash’ caudal vertebrae. These may be either a retention of or a reversal to the plesiomorphic sauropod condition because classic flagellicaudatan, biconvex distalmost caudals occur in the Middle Jurassic of England. Abstract: Quarry 9 is among the richest microvertebrate localities in the Morrison Formation, having thus far produced the remains of dozens of Late Jurassic taxa. Because this lenticular claystone deposit records such a high diversity of contemporaneous species, it provides an exceptionally detailed view of their paleoecology and local paleoenvironment. In this study, we reexamined the entire Quarry 9 collection, totaling more than 3700 specimens, and developed a revised faunal list that was used to determine taxonomic and ecological diversities. Comprehensive abundance data were collected as well, revealing significant discrepancies between the most diverse and most abundant groups. Amphibious taxa (crocodilians and turtles) were very abundant, and seemed to fill an important ecological role as “connectors” between the terrestrial and aquatic food webs. In contrast, small terrestrial taxa (small theropods, mammals, and small reptiles) were very diverse, highlighting their central placement within the terrestrial food web. The Upper Jurassic Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation in east-central Utah contains low sinuosity, ribbon-shaped fluvial channel sandstones enclosed by variegated mudstones. Channel sandstones formed when avulsion (the relatively abrupt shift of a river to a new channel) relocated a channel, after which extensive in-channel and minor near-channel sand deposition occurred. Interpretation of sedimentological, paleontological, and paleoclimatic data, and comparison with a possible modern analog, suggest that some channel avulsions and the subsequent deposition of ribbon sandstones may have occurred when large Jurassic dinosaurs, such as sauropods, partially or completely blocked active channels at death, thereby forcing discharge out of channels and into overbank areas. This process is termed “dinovulsion.” Dinosaurs also may have trampled deep pathways into the damp, soft floodplain substrate, creating channel-like conduits that focused overbank flow during flooding. In places where overbank flow concentrated in these deep, channel-shaped trails, a new channel course was scoured, and an avulsion was completed. As time passed and the system aggraded, these processes may have recurred and contributed to the preserved architecture of isolated, low-sinuosity sandstone ribbons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two partial skeletons from Montana represent the northernmost occurrences of Stegosauria within North America. One of these specimens represents the northernmost dinosaur fossil ever recovered from the Morrison Formation. Consisting of fragmentary cranial and postcranial remains, these specimens are contributing to our knowledge of the record and distribution of dinosaurs within the Morrison Formation from Montana. While the stegosaurs of the Morrison Formation consist of Alcovasaurus, Hesperosaurus, and Stegosaurus, the only positively identified stegosaur from Montana thus far is Hesperosaurus. Unfortunately, neither of these new specimens exhibit diagnostic autapomorphies. Nonetheless, these specimens are important data points due to their geographic significance, and some aspects of their morphologies are striking. In one specimen, the teeth express a high degree of wear usually unobserved within this clade--potentially illuminating the progression of the chewing motion in derived stegosaurs. Other morphologies, though not histologically examined in this analysis, have the potential to be important indicators for maturational inferences. In suite with other specimens from the northern extent of the formation, these specimens contribute to the ongoing discussion that body size may be latitudinally significant for stegosaurs--an intriguing geographical hypothesis which further emphasizes that size is not an undeviating proxy for maturity in dinosaurs. A fossil mammal from the Late Jurassic Morrison Formation, Colorado, has highly specialized teeth similar to those of xenarthran and tubulidentate placental mammals and different from the generalized insectivorous or omnivorous dentitions of other Jurassic mammals. It has many forelimb features specialized for digging, and its lumbar vertebrae show xenarthrous articulations. Parsimony analysis suggests that this fossil represents a separate basal mammalian lineage with some dental and vertebral convergences to those of modern xenarthran placentals, and reveals a previously unknown ecomorph of early mammals. A synthesis of recent and previous studies of the Morrison Formation and related beds, in the context of a conceptual climatic/hydrologic framework, permits reconstruction of the Late Jurassic dinosaurian ecosystem throughout the Western Interior of the United States and Canada. Climate models and geologic evidence indicate that a dry climate persisted in the Western Interior during the Late Jurassic. Early and Middle Kimmeridgian eolian deposits and Late Kimmeridgian alkaline, saline wetland/lacustrine deposits demonstrate that dryness persisted throughout the Kimmeridgian. Tithonian-age coal reflects lower evaporation rates associated with a slight cooling trend, but not a significant climate change.With a subtropical high over the Paleo-Pacific Ocean and atmospheric circulation generally toward the east, moisture carried by prevailing winds “rained out” progressively eastward, leaving the continental interior—and the Morrison depositional basin—dry. Within the basin, high evaporation rates associated with the southerly paleolatitude and greenhouse effects added to the dryness. Consequently, the two main sources of water—groundwater and surface water—originated outside the basin, through recharge of regional aquifers and streams that originated in the western uplands. Precipitation that fell west of the basin recharged aquifers that underlay the basin and discharged in wetlands and lakes in the distal, low-lying part of the basin. Precipitation west of the basin also fed intermittent and scarce perennial streams that flowed eastward. The streams were probably “losing” streams in their upstream reaches, and contributed to a locally raised water table. Elsewhere in the basin, where the floodplain intersected the water table, small lakes dotted the landscape. Seasonal storms, perhaps in part from the Paleo-Gulf of Mexico, brought some precipitation directly to the basin, although it was also subjected to “rain out” en route. Thus, meteoric input to the basin was appreciably less than groundwater and surface water contributions.The terrestrial Morrison ecosystem, which can be likened to a savannah, expanded with the northward retreat of the Late Jurassic Western Interior Seaway. The ecosystem was a complex mosaic, the components of which shifted through time. Riparian environments probably were the most diverse parts of the ecosystem, where a multi-storeyed canopy supported a diverse fauna, from insects to dinosaurs. Equable conditions also existed in wetlands, lakes, and elsewhere on the floodplain when seasonal rainfall brought an herbaceous groundcover to life. Eolian environments and alkaline, saline wetlands were inhospitable to life.Large herbivorous dinosaurs were adapted to this semi-arid landscape. Their size was an adaptive asset based on considerations of food requirements associated with a low metabolism and was also an advantage for migration during drought. Some of the large sauropods were adapted to browsing the higher vegetation associated with riparian environments; others to grazing the herbaceous groundcover on the floodplain and charophytes in the wetlands. The extensive distal wetlands may, in fact, have been refugia for some of these herbivores during the dry season and droughts. Extended periods of drought account for some of the dinosaur death assemblages; yet, the ecosystem could also sustain the most unusual life forms that ever roamed the Earth. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

During deposition of the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation, water that originated as precipitation in uplands to the west of the Western Interior depositional basin infiltrated regional aquifers that underlay the basin. This regional groundwater system delivered water into the otherwise dry continental interior basin where it discharged to form two major wetland/lacustrine successions. A freshwater carbonate wetland/lacustrine succession formed in the distal reaches of the basin, where regional groundwater discharged into the Denver–Julesburg Basin, which was a smaller structural basin within the more extensive Western Interior depositional basin. An alkaline–saline wetland/lacustrine complex (Lake T''oo''dichi'') formed farther upstream, where shallower aquifers discharged into the San Juan/Paradox Basin, which was another small structural basin in the Western Interior depositional basin. These were both wetlands in the sense that groundwater was the major source of water. Input from surface and meteoric water was limited. In both basins, lacustrine conditions developed during episodes of increased input of surface water. Inclusion of wetlands in our interpretation of what had previously been considered largely lacustrine systems has important implications for paleohydrology and paleoclimatology.The distal carbonate wetland/lacustrine deposits are well developed in the Morrison Formation of east-central Colorado, occupying a stratigraphic interval that is equivalent to the “lower” Morrison but extends into the “upper” Morrison Formation. Sedimentologic, paleontologic, and isotopic evidence indicate that regional groundwater discharge maintained shallow, hydrologically open, well oxygenated, perennial carbonate wetlands and lakes despite the semi-arid climate. Wetland deposits include charophyte-rich wackestone and green mudstone. Lacustrine episodes, in which surface water input was significant, were times of carbonate and siliciclastic deposition in scarce deltaic and shoreline deposits. Marginal lacustrine deposits include ooid and skeletal packstone–grainstone, siltstone, and sandstone. Distal lacustrine units are skeletal mudstone–wackestone, microbialites, and laminated (siliciclastic) mudstone. Differentiation between wetlands and distal lacustrine units is not always possible. Palustrine features, Magadi-type chert (MTC), and evaporites record episodes of increased aridity and exposure.Farther upstream, during deposition of the upper part of the Brushy Basin Member, the ancestral Uncompahgre Uplift imposed a barrier to shallow, eastward-flowing groundwater that discharged into the San Juan/Paradox Basin on the upstream side of the uplift. This created the closed hydrologic setting necessary for development of an alkaline–saline wetland/lacustrine complex (“Lake” T''oo''dichi''). Silicic volcanic ash, delivered by prevailing winds from calderas west and southwest of the basin, contributed to the pore-water evolution in the sediments. A distinctive lateral hydrogeochemical gradient, reflecting increasing salinity and alkalinity in the pore waters, altered the ash to a variety of authigenic minerals that define concentric zones within the basin. The basinward progression of diagenetic mineral zones is smectite→clinoptilolite→analcime±potassium feldspar→albite. The groundwater-fed wetlands were shallow and frequently evaporated to dryness. Scarce laminated gray mudstone beds record distinct episodes of freshwater lacustrine deposition that resulted from intermittent streams that carried detritus well out into the basin. In light of diverse geological evidence that indicates a seasonal, semiarid climate for the time of deposition of the Morrison Formation, one can assume these general environmental conditions for the purpose of reconstructing the ancient ecosystem. Wet environments that preserved plant fossils and some invertebrates and small vertebrates in the Morrison can be interpreted as representing local conditions limited in space and/or time. These elements of the biota and the smaller dinosaurs were probably restricted to such wetland areas at times of environmental stress.A diverse fauna of large, herbivorous, sauropod dinosaurs ranged throughout the environment. Although this seems to be inconsistent with an environment with sparse resources, large size confers physiologic advantages that are adaptive for just such conditions. The scaling effect of large size makes large herbivores very efficient relative to their size in needing proportionately less food and food of poorer quality than smaller herbivores. They can also survive starvation longer and travel more efficiently to reach widely separated resource patches. Although few in number at any time, the sauropod dinosaurs are locally abundant and seemingly ubiquitous in the fossil record of the Morrison Formation because of overrepresentation of their highly preservable remains in an attritional fossil assemblage. Seventy-five types of ichnofossils documented during a four-year reconnaissance study in the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation demonstrate that highly diverse and abundant plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates occur throughout most of the Morrison or equivalent strata. Invertebrate ichnofossils, preserving the most environmentally and climatically sensitive in situ behavior of Morrison organisms, are in nearly all outcrops. Terrestrial ichnofossils record biotic processes in soil formation, indicating soil moisture and water-table levels. Freshwater ichnofossils preserve evidence of water depth, salinity, and seasonality of water bodies. Ichnofossils, categorized as epiterraphilic, terraphilic, hygrophilic, and hydrophilic (new terms), reflect the moisture regime where they were constructed. The ichnofossils are vertically zoned with respect to physical, chemical, and biological factors in the environment that controlled their distribution and abundance, and are expressed as surficial, shallow, intermediate, and deep.The sedimentologic, stratigraphic, and geographic distribution of Morrison ichnofossils reflects the environmental and climatic variations across the basin through time. Marginal-marine, tidal to brackish-water ichnofossils are mainly restricted to the Windy Hill Member. Very large to small termite nests dominate the Salt Wash Member. Similar size ranges of ant nests dominate the Brushy Basin Member. Soil bee nests dominate in the Salt Wash, decreasing in abundance through the Brushy Basin. Deeper and larger insect nests indicate more seasonal distribution of precipitation and rainfall. Shallower and smaller insect nests indicate either dry or wet substrate conditions depending on the nest architecture and paleopedogenic and sedimentologic character of the substrate. Trace–fossil indicators of flowing or standing water conditions are dominant in the Tidwell Member and in fluvial sandstones of the Salt Wash and Brushy Basin Members. Large communities of perennial, freshwater bivalve traces are abundant in the Tidwell and Brushy Basin Members but to a lesser extent in the Salt Wash Member. Shallow crayfish burrows, indicating a water-table level close to the surface (<1 m), are restricted to channel bank and proximal alluvial deposits in the Salt Wash, Recapture, and Brushy Basin Members. Sauropod, theropod, pterosaur, and other vertebrate tracks occur throughout the Morrison Formation associated with alluvial, lacustrine, and transitional-marine shoreline deposits.Ichnofossils and co-occurring paleosols in the Morrison reflect the local and regional paleohydrologic settings, which record the annual soil moisture budget and were largely controlled by the climate in the basin. Contributions to near-surface biologic systems by groundwater from distant sources were minor, except where the water table perennially, seasonally, or ephemerally intersected the ground-surface. The Jurassic Morrison Formation in the southern portion of the basin experienced a mosaic of seasonal climates that varied from a drier (Tidwell/Windy Hill deposition) to a wetter (lower and middle Salt Wash deposition) and slightly drier (upper Salt Wash deposition) tropical wet–dry climate, returning to a wetter tropical wet–dry climate near the end of Morrison deposition (Brushy Basin deposition). The northern part of the basin experienced similar trends across a mosaic of Mediterranean climate types. The range and mosaic pattern of wet–dry Morrison climates is analogous to the range of climates (and their seasonal variability) that dominates the African savanna today. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Freshwater unionid bivalves are spatially and temporally distributed throughout the Morrison depositional basin, and locally dominate the biomass of many aquatic depositional environments. Two bivalve assemblages are identified. Within-channel assemblages are death assemblages that have been transported and may represent mixed assemblages from multiple communities. These assemblages are predominately disarticulated, in current stable orientations, and composed of higher stream velocity ecophenotypes (medium size, lanceolate form, and very thick shells). The floodplain-pond assemblages are disturbed neighborhood assemblages in the mudstones inhabited during life. The bivalves are predominately articulated, variable in size, and composed of low stream velocity ecophenotypes (large maximum sizes, ovate shell shapes, and thinner shells).The glochidial parasitic larval stage of unionid bivalves provides an effective means of dispersing species throughout drainage basins. These larvae attach to fish and are carried through the fluvial drainage where the larvae detach and establish new bivalve communities. Preliminary paleobiogeographic analyses are drawn at the genus level because of the need to reevaluate bivalve species of the Morrison. Unio spp. and Vetulonaia spp. are widespread throughout the Morrison depositional basin, but Hadrodon spp. are restricted to the eastern portion of the Colorado Plateau during Salt Wash Member deposition, suggesting that Salt Wash drainage was isolated from other contemporaneous regions of the basin.Bivalves from five localities in the Morrison Formation were thin-sectioned for growth band analysis. Growth bands of modern unionid bivalves are produced when the valves are forced to close. Closure can produce annual growth bands in response to seasonal variation, such as temperature-induced hibernation, or precipitation-induced aestivation or turbidity. Pseudoannual growth bands form from non-cyclical events such as predation attacks or isolated storm turbidity. Vetulonaia sp. from the Tidwell Member, Green River, Utah, and from Tidwell-equivalent beds at Como Bluff, Wyoming, exhibits continuous growth with no annual banding, suggesting that seasonality of climate and discharge did not vary appreciable during the year. Hadrodon sp. from the Salt Wash Member in Colorado National Monument, Colorado, exhibits annual banding with subequal light and dark bands indicating seasonal cyclicity. Vetulonaia sp. from the Cleveland-Lloyd locality, Utah, exhibits complex banding that indicates a combination of annual and pseudoannual bands. This suggests seasonal cyclicity and intermittent periods of environmental stress (predation, storm-produced turbidity and/or volcanic ash falls). Specimens of Vetulonaia sp. from Dinosaur National Monument, Utah, are replaced by chert with faint ghosts of bands that are too poorly preserved for environmental interpretations. Preliminary growth band studies suggest a change from a uniform optimum habitat in the Tidwell Member to strongly developed annual growth banding in the Salt Wash Member, suggesting cyclic annual precipitation, and finally to irregular banding produced by a complex interaction of weakly developed annual growth bands and pseudoannual bands in the Brushy Basin Member. The Morrison Formation contains six plant taphofacies: Wood, whole-leaf, leaf-mat, root, common carbonaceous debris, and rare carbonaceous debris. None of these taphofacies is common in the Morrison; particularly striking is the paucity of wood, even in more reducing environments. The flora of the Morrison Formation is distinct in the Kimmeridgian and Tithonian parts of the section. The plant taphofacies are consistent with a predominantly herbaceous vegetation. Evidence from the plant taphofacies, floras, and sedimentology of the Morrison is consistent with a warm, seasonal, semi-arid climate throughout, changing from dry semi-arid to humid semi-arid from the Kimmeridgian to the Tithonian parts of the formation.
