Abstract

In January, 2018, Fornal and Grinstein proposed that a previously unobserved neutron decay branch to a dark matter particle (χ) could account for the discrepancy in the neutron lifetime observed in two different types of experiments. One of the possible final states discussed includes a single χ along with an e+e− pair. We use data from the UCNA (Ultracold Neutron Asymmetry) experiment to set limits on this decay channel. Coincident electron-like events are detected with ∼ 4π acceptance using a pair of detectors that observe a volume of stored Ultracold Neutrons (UCNs). We use the timing information of coincidence events to select candidate dark sector particle decays by applying a timing calibration and selecting events within a physically-forbidden timing region for conventional n → p + e- + ν̅e decays. The summed kinetic energy (Ee+e−) from such events is reconstructed and used to set limits, as a function of the χ mass, on the branching fraction for this decay channel.

Abstract

The UCNA experiment was designed to measure the neutron β-asymmetry parameter A0 using polarized ultracold neutrons (UCN). UCN produced via downscattering in solid deuterium were polarized via transport through a 7 T magnetic field, and then directed to a 1 T solenoidal electron spectrometer, where the decay electrons were detected in electron detector packages located on the two ends of the spectrometer. A value for A0 was then extracted from the asymmetry in the numbers of counts in the two detector packages. We summarize all of the results from the UCNA experiment, obtained during run periods in 2007, 2008–2009, 2010, and 2011–2013, which ultimately culminated in a 0.67% precision result for A0.

Abstract

The neutron is the simplest nuclear system that can be used to probe the structure of the weak interaction and search for physics beyond the standard model. Measurements of neutron lifetime and β-decay correlation coefficients with precisions of 0.02% and 0.1%, respectively, would allow for stringent constraints on new physics. The UCNτ experiment uses an asymmetric magneto-gravitational UCN trap with in situ counting of surviving neutrons to measure the neutron lifetime, τn = 877.7s (0.7s)stat (+0.4/−0.2s)sys. We discuss the recent result from UCNτ, the status of ongoing data collection and analysis, and the path toward a 0.25 s measurement of the neutron lifetime with UCNτ.

Abstract

The success of scattering muon tomography has prompted us to explore cosmic ray flux attenuation, electro-magnetic shower induction, and muouic X-ray emission as additional means for the non-destructive assay of small and medium size objects. We report on the value of the signatures of these processes as an adjunct to multiple scattering muon tomography. We discuss our experiments and the Monte-Carlo calculations of these processes, the type of information that can be drawn from their signatures, the cost and the value of this information. We discuss the general requirements for detector systems to make use of cosmic ray flux attenuation, induction of electro-magnetic showers, and muonic X-rays in muon tomography. We find that the attenuation of the cosmic ray flux allows for the inference of the density distribution for objects of automobile size and smaller with exposure times of order a few minutes. Our preliminary experiments and calculations have shown that using muonic X-rays to identify composition is exceedingly difficult, requiring months of exposure. Our experiments are not yet sensitive enough to detect muonic x-rays at the rates expected from previous accelerator experiments. Abstract

We constructed two small-area pixelated detectors, which can record signals produced by 800-MeV proton beam micropulses with a repetition rate of 358 ns. The first detector was built around a two-dimensional (2-D) photodiode array. The array was illuminated by light emitted by a monolithic 1.7-mm-thick lutetium oxy-orthosilicate (LSO) scintillator and imaged by a simple optical system. The other detector was a hydrogen ion chamber operated at 1 to 2.5 atm. The anode was divided into an array of 8 x 8 1 [mm.sup.2] pixels. The fast positive-ion drift velocity in hydrogen helps to minimize the space charge build up. However, for beam pulses spaced in time closer than 1 [micro]s, there appears to be a substantial accumulation of space charge. The electronic readout chain, for each of the 64 channels, consisted of an externally clocked fast-gated integrator and an amplifier coupled to an on-board analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a first-in-first-out storage (FIFO). The detectors were tested with beam pulses up to 4 x [10.sup.6] protons per [mm.sup.2] delivered in 30 to 120 ns wide microbursts. Abstract

The Ultracold Neutron Asymmetry (UCNA) experiment was designed to measure the $\beta$-decay asymmetry parameter, $A_0$, for free neutron decay. In the experiment, polarized ultracold neutrons are transported into a decay trap, and their $\beta$-decay electrons are detected with $\approx 4\pi$ acceptance into two detector packages which provide position and energy reconstruction. The experiment also has sensitivity to $b_{n}$, the Fierz interference term in the neutron $\beta$-decay rate. In this work, we determine $b_{n}$ from the energy dependence of $A_0$ using the data taken during the UCNA 2011-2013 run. In addition, we present the same type of analysis using the earlier 2010 $A$ dataset. Motivated by improved statistics and comparable systematic errors compared to the 2010 data-taking run, we present a new $b_{n}$ measurement using the weighted average of our asymmetry dataset fits, to obtain $b_{n} = 0.066 \pm 0.041_{\text{stat}} \pm 0.024_{\text{syst}}$ which corresponds to a limit of $-0.012 < b_{n} < 0.144$ at the 90% confidence level., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. We have performed a search for this decay mode over the allowed range of energies of the monoenergetic gamma ray for X to be a dark matter particle. Abstract

The neutron $\beta$-decay asymmetry parameter $A_0$ defines the correlation between the spin of the neutron and the momentum of the emitted electron, which determines $\lambda=\frac{g_{A}}{g_{V}}$, the ratio of the axial-vector to vector weak coupling constants. The UCNA Experiment, located at the Ultracold Neutron facility at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, is the first to measure such a correlation coefficient using ultracold neutrons (UCN). Following improvements to the systematic uncertainties and increased statistics, we report the new result $A_0 = -0.12054(44)_{\mathrm{stat}}(68)_{\mathrm{syst}}$ which yields $\lambda\equiv \frac{g_{A}}{g_{V}}=-1.2783(22)$. Combination with the previous UCNA result and accounting for correlated systematic uncertainties produces $A_0=-0.12015(34)_{\mathrm{stat}}(63)_{\mathrm{syst}}$ and $\lambda\equiv \frac{g_{A}}{g_{V}}=-1.2772(20)$., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, updated to as-published version

Abstract

Precision measurements of free neutron $\beta$-decay have been used to precisely constrain our understanding of the weak interaction. However the neutron Fierz interference term $b_n$, which is particularly sensitive to Beyond-Standard-Model tensor currents at the TeV scale, has thus far eluded measurement. Here we report the first direct constraints on this term, finding $b_n = 0.067 \pm 0.005_{\text{stat}} {}^{+0.090}_{- 0.061}{}_{\text{sys}}$, consistent with the Standard Model. The uncertainty is dominated by absolute energy reconstruction and the linearity of the beta spectrometer energy response.

Abstract

The (K-stopped, pi0) strangeness and charge changing reaction was investigated by producing a 12Blambda hypernucleus from a carbon target. The branching ratio for K- capture to the ground and p-shell states of this hypernucleus was found to be (0.28 +- 0.08)x10-3 and (0.35 +- 0.09)x10-3, respectively, which after correction for isospin was lower than a previously measured value for the 12C(K-stopped, pi-)12Clambda reaction, but still above the theoretical predictions for the ground state. The experiment obtained a missing-mass resolution comparable to in-flight reactions, however the higher background and lower selectivity of the K-stopped reaction limits its usefulness in experimental study of the 12C(K-stopped, pi0)12Blambda reaction.

Abstract

High quality analyzing powers for the pi^-pvector to pi^0 n reaction have been obtained with a polarized proton target over a broad angular range at incident kinetic energies of 98.1, 138.8, 165.9, and 214.4 MeV. This experiment nearly doubled the existing N single-charge-exchange database for energies ranging from 10 to 230 MeV, with 36 new analyzing powers. The Neutral Meson Spectrometer was used to detect the outgoing neutral pions. The data are well described by recent phase-shift analyses. When combined with high-precision and accurate cross section data at the same energies, the data can provide a good test of the degree of isospin breaking in the region of the Delta (1232) resonance. They will also be helpful for constraining the evaluation of the pion-nucleon term from the scattering amplitudes.

Abstract

Asymmetries for the (–,0) reaction on polarized 3He were measured using a 200-MeV pion beam at LAMPF. The 0's were detected with the neutral meson spectrometer in coincidence with the recoiling tritons. A recoil triton detector, consisting of scintillation-counter telescopes and a wire chamber, was used to measure the time-of-flight, energy loss, and direction of the tritons. The polarized gaseous 3He target, developed at TRIUMF, was modified to run with two diode lasers; the polarization reached 65%. The asymmetries between lab = 60° and 105° were found to be strongly angle dependent. The results are compared with theoretical calculations.

Abstract

In the LAMPF experiment Pi- P(Polarized) -> Pio N reaction have been obtained over a broad angular range at incident kinetic energies of 98.1, 138.8, 165.9 and 214.4 MeV. High quality data for this change-exchange reaction are sparse. Analyzing-power measurements for the PiN system are particularly sensitive to the interference between partial waves, and can provide crucial information for partial-wave decompositions of the PiN amplitudes. These measurements will help to quantify topics such as the violation of isospin invariance in the PiN system across the Delta(1232) resonance and the negative-energy extrapolation of the PiN amplitudes for extraction of the PiN sigma term.
