Abstract

We announce the formation of the “GLORIA ITALIA NETWORK” and present an overview of the Italian alpine plant communities changes that have occurred in the last 20 years. This network will provide coordination between Italian GLORIA sites and enhance public awareness of changes in alpine plant diversity under climate change.

3. Flow velocity variations and surface change of the destabilised Plator rock glacier (Central Italian Alps) from aerial surveys

Abstract

Flow velocities were measured on the Plator rock glacier in the Central Italian Alps using a cor-relation image analysis algorithm on orthophotos acquired by drones between the years 2016 and 2020. The spatial patterns of surface creep were then compared to the Bulk Creep Factor (BCF) spatial variability to interpret the rock glacier dynamics as a function of material proper-ties and geometry. The rock glacier showed different creep rates in the rooting zone (0.40–0.90 m/y) and in the frontal zone (>4.0 m/y). Close to the rock glacier front, the BCF assumed the highest values, reaching values typical of rock glaciers experiencing destabilisation. Conversely, in the rooting zone the small rates corresponded to lowest BCFs, about five times smaller than in the frontal zone. The Plator rock glacier revealed a substantial advancement from 1981 to 2020 and distinct geomorphological features typical of rock glaciers exhibiting destabilising process-es. Given the fast-moving phase, the advancement of both the front line and the front toe of the rock glacier, and the contrasting spatial distribution in the BCFs, the Plator could be considered a destabilised rock glacier.

4. Kinematics of an Alpine rock glacier from multi-temporal UAV surveys and GNSS data

Abstract

The quantification of rock glacier dynamics has gained increasing importance in recent years. In this study, the spatial and temporal flow patterns of perennially frozen debris in the active Gran Sometta rock glacier (Western Italian Alps) were investigated with repeated Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) surveys (2016–2019), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) campaigns (2012−2020), geophysical prospections (2015) and ground surface temperature data (2014–2020). UAV data were used to generate maps of changes and elevation differences of the rock glacier surface by 3D point cloud comparison to evaluate surface lowering and accumulation processes. Horizontal velocities were quantified by an automatic image correlation technique and the results were then compared with horizontal surface velocities from GNSS measurements on selected points. The horizontal velocities estimated with the automatic method agree well with the GNSS velocities with an R2 = 0.99 and a RMSE lower than 0.07 m/y. Point cloud comparisons show surface lowering in the orographic left-hand side of the terminal part and in the central body of the rock glacier. The upper part exhibits almost absence of subsidence and any movement. This is explained by the lack of permafrost in this sector due to its overriding by the development of a small glacier during the Little Ice Age. As a result of the downslope movement, zones of surface rising occurred at the advancing front and at the moving ridge and furrow complexes. Surface velocity decreases from the orographic left to the right-hand side of the rock glacier tongue, where a thaw subsidence of up to 0.05 m/y was also observed. According to the GNSS measurements, the range of flow velocity of the rock glacier increased from 0.17–1.1 m/y in 2013 to 0.21–1.45 m/y in 2015 and then decreased until 2018 when the smallest surface velocity is detected. Abstract

Both biotic and abiotic components, characterizing the mountain treeline ecotone, respond differently to climate variations. This study aims at reconstructing climate-driven changes by analyzing soil evolution in the late Holocene and by assessing the climatic trends for the last centuries and years in a key high-altitude climatic treeline (2515 m a.s.l.) on the SW slope of the Becca di Viou mountain (Aosta Valley Region, Italy). This approach is based on soil science and dendrochronological techniques, together with daily air/soil temperature monitoring of four recent growing seasons. Direct measurements show that the ongoing soil temperatures during the growing season, at the treeline and above, are higher than the predicted reference values for the Alpine treeline. Thus, they do not represent a limiting factor for tree establishment and growth, including at the highest altitudes of the potential treeline (2625 m a.s.l.). Dendrochronological evidences show a marked sensitivity of tree-ring growth to early-summer temperatures. During the recent 10-year period 2006–2015, trees at around 2300 m a.s.l. have grown at a rate that is approximately 1.9 times higher than during the 10-year period 1810–1819, one of the coolest periods of the Little Ice Age. On the other hand, soils show only an incipient response to the ongoing climate warming, likely because of its resilience regarding the changeable environmental conditions and the different factors influencing the soil development. The rising air temperature, and the consequent treeline upward shift, could be the cause of a shift from Regosol to soil with more marked Umbric characteristics, but only for soil profiles located on the N facing slopes. Overall, the results of this integrated approach permitted a quantification of the different responses in abiotic and biotic components through time, emphasizing the influence of local station conditions in responding to the past and ongoing climate change.

Abstract

I cambiamenti climatici stanno determinando un aumento dell'instabilità dei versanti rocciosi di alta quota. Questo fenomeno è divenuto particolarmente evidente a partire dalla torrida estate 2003, quando numerosi massicci alpini hanno manifestato un'attività di crolli senza precedenti, mettendo a rischio escursionisti, alpinisti e infrastrutture di alta quota. Nell'ambito dei progetti Interreg Alcotra PERMAdataROC e MASSA, il CNR-IRPI e ARPA Valle d'Aosta, con il supporto finanziario e logistico della Regione Valle d'Aosta, hanno realizzato presso la Capanna J.A. Carrel un sistema sperimentale di monitoraggio microsismico delle deformazioni dell'ammasso roccioso, in relazione all'andamento della temperatura. La formazione e l'apertura di fratture nella roccia, così come il distacco di blocchi rocciosi, sono infatti fenomeni che producono vibrazioni che possono essere percepite e registrate da geofoni: l'installazione di una rete di sensori adeguatamente posizionati può consentire di individuare non solo quando, ma anche dove avvengono i fenomeni di interesse. Lo studio ha evidenziato una correlazione tra i "rumori" sismici prodotti dallo sviluppo di stati tensionali della roccia e/o da crolli, da un lato, e le variazioni di temperatura, dall'altro. La brevità dello studio non ha tuttavia consentito di verificare il possibile utilizzo applicativo dei segnali registrati dai geofoni quali precursori di eventi di crollo.

Abstract

Snow models are usually evaluated at sites providing high-quality meteorological data, so that the uncertainty in the meteorological input data can be neglected when assessing model performances. However, high-quality input data are rarely available in mountain areas and, in practical applications, the meteorological forcing used to drive snow models is typically derived from spatial interpolation of the available in situ data or from reanalyses, whose accuracy can be considerably lower. In order to fully characterize the performances of a snow model, the model sensitivity to errors in the input data should be quantified. In this study we test the ability of six snow models to reproduce snow water equivalent, snow density and snow depth when they are forced by meteorological input data with gradually lower accuracy. The SNOWPACK, GEOTOP, HTESSEL, UTOPIA, SMASH and S3M snow models are forced, first, with high-quality measurements performed at the experimental site of Torgnon, located at 2160 m a.s.l. in the Italian Alps (control run). Then, the models are forced by data at gradually lower temporal and/or spatial resolution, obtained by (i) sampling the original Torgnon 30 min time series at 3, 6, and 12 h, (ii) spatially interpolating neighbouring in situ station measurements and (iii) extracting information from GLDAS, ERA5 and ERA-Interim reanalyses at the grid point closest to the Torgnon site. Since the selected models are characterized by different degrees of complexity, from highly sophisticated multi-layer snow models to simple, empirical, single-layer snow schemes, we also discuss the results of these experiments in relation to the model complexity. The results show that, when forced by accurate 30 min resolution weather station data, the single-layer, intermediate-complexity snow models HTESSEL and UTOPIA provide similar skills to the more sophisticated multi-layer model SNOWPACK, and these three models show better agreement with observations and more robust performances over different seasons compared to the lower-complexity models SMASH and S3M. All models forced by 3-hourly data provide similar skills to the control run, while the use of 6- and 12-hourly temporal resolution forcings may lead to a reduction in model performances if the incoming shortwave radiation is not properly represented. The SMASH model generally shows low sensitivity to the temporal degradation of the input data. Spatially interpolated data from neighbouring stations and reanalyses are found to be adequate forcings, provided that temperature and precipitation variables are not affected by large biases over the considered period. However, a simple bias-adjustment technique applied to ERA-Interim temperatures allowed all models to achieve similar performances to the control run. Regardless of their complexity, all models show weaknesses in the representation of the snow density.

Abstract

The input of mineral dust from arid regions impacts snow optical properties. The induced albedo reduction generally alters the melting dynamics of the snowpack, resulting in earlier snowmelt. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of dust depositions on the melting dynamics of snowpack at a high-elevation site (2160 m) in the European Alps (Torgnon, Aosta Valley, Italy) during three hydrological years (2013-2016). These years were characterized by several Saharan dust events that deposited significant amounts of mineral dust in the European Alps. We quantify the shortening of the snow season due to dust deposition by comparing observed snow depths and those simulated with the Crocus model accounting, or not, for the impact of impurities. The model was run and tested using meteorological data from an automated weather station. We propose the use of repeated digital images for tracking dust deposition and resurfacing in the snowpack. The good agreement between model prediction and digital images allowed us to propose the use of an RGB index (i.e. snow darkening index - SDI) for monitoring dust on snow using images from a digital camera. We also present a geochemical characterization of dust reaching the Alpine chain during spring in 2014. Elements found in dust were classified as a function of their origin and compared with Saharan sources. A strong enrichment in Fe was observed in snow containing Saharan dust. In our case study, the comparison between modelling results and observations showed that impurities deposited in snow anticipated the disappearance of snow up to 38 d a out of a total 7 months of typical snow duration. This happened for the season 2015-2016 that was characterized by a strong dust deposition event. During the other seasons considered here (2013-2014 and 2014-2015), the snow melt-out date was 18 and 11 d earlier, respectively. We conclude that the effect of the Saharan dust is expected to reduce snow cover duration through the snow-albedo feedback

Abstract

The investigation and modelling of permafrost distribution, particularly in areas of discontinuous permafrost, is challenging due to spatial heterogeneity, remoteness of measurement sites and data scarcity. We have designed a strategy for standardizing different local data sets containing evidence of the presence or absence of permafrost into an inventory for the entire European Alps. With this brief communication, we present the structure and contents of this inventory. This collection of permafrost evidence not only highlights existing data and allows new analyses based on larger data sets, but also provides complementary information for an improved interpretation of monitoring results.

Abstract

Globally accelerating trends in societal development and human environmental impacts since the mid-twentieth century1,2,3,4,5,6,7 are known as the Great Acceleration and have been discussed as a key indicator of the onset of the Anthropocene epoch6. While reports on ecological responses (for example, changes in species range or local extinctions) to the Great Acceleration are multiplying8, 9, it is unknown whether such biotic responses are undergoing a similar acceleration over time. This knowledge gap stems from the limited availability of time series data on biodiversity changes across large temporal and geographical extents. Here we use a dataset of repeated plant surveys from 302 mountain summits across Europe, spanning 145 years of observation, to assess the temporal trajectory of mountain biodiversity changes as a globally coherent imprint of the Anthropocene. We find a continent-wide acceleration in the rate of increase in plant species richness, with five times as much species enrichment between 2007 and 2016 as fifty years ago, between 1957 and 1966. This acceleration is strikingly synchronized with accelerated global warming and is not linked to alternative global change drivers. The accelerating increases in species richness on mountain summits across this broad spatial extent demonstrate that acceleration in climate-induced biotic change is occurring even in remote places on Earth, with potentially far-ranging consequences not only for biodiversity, but also for ecosystem functioning and services.

International audience; The hydrological balance of an Alpine catchment is strongly affected by snowpack dynamics. Melt-water supplies a significant component of the annual water budget, both in terms of soil moisture and runoff, which play a critical role in floods generation and impact water resource management in snow - dominated basins. Several snow models have been developed with variable degrees of complexity, mainly depending on their target application and the availability of computational resources and data. According to the level of detail, snow models range from statistical snowmelt-runoff and degree-day methods using composite snow-soil or explicit snow layer(s), to physically-based and energy balance snow models, consisting of detailed internal snow-process schemes. Intermediate-complexity approaches have been widely developed. Nevertheless, an increasing model complexity does not necessarily entail improved model simulations. Here a multilayer energy balance snow module is presented. The model has been developed at CIMA Research Foundation for hydrological purposes. Snow observations supplied by three Alpine sites were used for the model calibration, whose methodology is here described. Preliminary results of a comparison analysis against the snow module developed at UPMC and IRSTEA are shown and discussed.

Abstract

This manuscript presents a study aimed at characterizing the seasonal course of photosynthetic capacity of an alpine deciduous conifer, European larch (Larix decidua Mill.), based on chlorophyll fluorescence measurements and photosynthetic pigment analysis. The study focused on the characterization of autumn senescence events which (contrary to bud-burst) are still scarcely investigated. The study was conducted on two natural European larch stands in the northwestern Italian Alps during two consecutive years. The results show that photosynthetic efficiency as assessed by fluorescence measurements was controlled by variations in air and soil temperature. Photosynthesis responded to variations in maximum air and soil temperature in a delayed way, with a varying lag depending on the seasonal period considered. The analysis of photosynthetic efficiency and pigment decline at the end of the growing season identified two senescence phases. During early senescence, plants manifested only the beginning of needle decolouration, while during late senescence pigment degradation led to a loss in photosynthetic efficiency. This behavior indicates that the beginning of needle yellowing and the decline in photosynthetic efficiency can occur at different times-a finding that should be considered in order to improve models of ecosystem processes.

Abstract

This study compares MODIS NDVI 16-day (250 m) time series, acquired by Terra and Aqua platforms, for monitoring the phenological cycle of larch and grasslands in an alpine environment. The accuracy of MODIS 250 m Terra and Aqua phenological metrics was evaluated for larch forests through comparison with field data. At regional level it was carried out a correlation analysis between the mean dates of start and end of season detected from MODIS Terra and Aqua in different years. Regional maps of start and end of season were derived from MODIS data and the interannual phenological variability of both ecosystems was evaluated. Annual anomalies of the beginning of the growing season, obtained from satellite data, were related with air temperature anomalies, computed from meteorological stations, to evaluate the effects of recent climate variability on the vegetation phenological cycle. Comparison with field phenological observations showed that the start and the end of phenological cycle can be accurately determined from MODIS Terra and Aqua data and that an increase/decrease of 1°C in spring temperature lead to about 10 days in advance/ delay of the start of the growing season.

Abstract

In this study we analyze the spatial and temporal variability of European Larch phenological cycle in mountainous areas (Val d'Aosta, Italy) by using a combination of satellite data, primary topographic attributes (altitude and aspect) and phenological models driven by climatic variables. We apply a remote sensing technique based on a time series of MODIS TERRA 250m 16-days NDVI data for mapping the inter-annual variability of phenological cycle. Starting from the satellite green-up maps we spatially explored the response of larch phenology at different terrain conditions varying for altitude and aspect. A retrospective analysis based on climate-driven phenological models was finally conductedd to evaluate the magnitude of temporal variability of Larch phenology in the last century.

25. European Larch phenology in the Alps : can we grasp the role of ecological factors by combining field observations and inverse modelling

Abstract

Vegetation phenology is strongly influenced by climatic factors. Climate changes may cause phenological variations, especially in the Alps which are considered to be extremely vulnerable to global warming. The main goal of our study is to analyze European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) phenology in alpine environments and the role of the ecological factors involved, using an integrated approach based on accurate field observations and modelling techniques. We present 2 years of field-collected larch phenological data, obtained following a specifically designed observation protocol. We observed that both spring and autumn larch phenology is strongly influenced by altitude. We propose an approach for the optimization of a spring warming model (SW) and the growing season index model (GSI) consisting of a model inversion technique, based on simulated look-up tables (LUTs), that provides robust parameter estimates. The optimized models showed excellent agreement between modelled and observed data: the SW model predicts the beginning of the growing season (BGS) with a mean RMSE of 4 days, while GSI gives a prediction of the growing season length (LGS) with a RMSE of 5 days. Moreover, we showed that the original GSI parameters led to consistent errors, while the optimized ones significantly increased model accuracy. Finally, we used GSI to investigate interactions of ecological factors during springtime development and autumn senescence. We found that temperature is the most effective factor during spring recovery while photoperiod plays an important role during autumn senescence: photoperiod shows a contrasting effect with altitude decreasing its influence with increasing altitude.

27. CHEMICAL ELEMENTS AND HEAVY METALS IN EUROPEAN LARCH TREE RINGS FROM REMOTE AND POLLUTED SITES IN THE EUROPEAN ALPS

Abstract

Air pollution dispersal in the European Alps has been studied both for glacial and forest environments. In this study, chemical elements and heavy metals in the tree rings were analyzed for seven sites of European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) in the Italian European Alps. At three sites in the proximities of the Mont Blanc Tunnel (MBT) entrance the analyses were performed at the yearly scale on the periods 1950-1970 (comprising the MBT opening in 1965) and 1985-2008 (comprising the 3-yr MBT closure after the 1999 car accident) with the aim to check if trees recorded at the yearly scale variations in chemical elements and changes in heavy metals concentrations over time. At the regional scale, the analyses on heavy metals were conducted without annual resolution for most sites on the common periods 1950-1970 / 1985-1998 with the aim to detect possible ongoing trends and differences between some Alpine sites. Chemical elements concentrations at Entrèves (EN) sites varied significantly between heartwood and sapwood with generally higher concentrations in sapwood. At EN sites no clear patterns were found for heavy metals before and after the MBT opening and during its 3-yr closure. We found that the "high" site (ENH) was generally less polluted than the "close" (ENC) and the "far" (ENF) sites. At site ENC we found higher values of Cr, Ni and Cu, whereas at site ENF we found higher values for all the other elements analyzed. The analysis of heavy metals at the regional scale revealed generally no significant temporal changes in concentrations except for Cr and Cu, showing higher values in the recent period. On comparing the heavy metals concentration between the seven sites, the Palud site showed almost always the highest concentrations, except for Ni and Cu that were higher in two remote sites close to glacial environments in the Gressoney and Valtellina valleys. Dendrochemical analysis revealed that the temporal information in the tree rings is covered by too many signals and no environmental changes are recorded at the yearly scale by European larch. However tree rings may provide useful information on ongoing long-term trends and on the spatial definition of pollutant dispersal in the Alpine environment.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to provide a first synthesis on the state and recent evolution of permafrost at the monitoring site of Cime Bianche (3100 m a.s.l.) on the Italian side of the Western Alps. The analysis is based on 7 years of ground temperature observations in two boreholes and seven surface points. The analysis aims to quantify the spatial and temporal variability of ground surface temperature in relation to snow cover, the small-scale spatial variability of the active layer thickness and current temperature trends in deep permafrost.Results show that the heterogeneity of snow cover thickness, both in space and time, is the main factor controlling ground surface temperatures and leads to a mean range of spatial variability (2.5 ± 0.1 °C) which far exceeds the mean range of observed inter-annual variability (1.6 ± 0.1 °C). The active layer thickness measured in two boreholes at a distance of 30 m shows a mean difference of 2.0 ± 0.1 m with the active layer of one borehole consistently deeper. As revealed by temperature analysis and geophysical soundings, such a difference is mainly driven by the ice/water content in the sub-surface and not by the snow cover regimes. The analysis of deep temperature time series reveals that permafrost is warming. The detected trends are statistically significant starting from a depth below 8 m with warming rates between 0.1 and 0.01 °C yr⁻¹.
