Abstract

A strongly coupled ultracold plasma can be used as an excellent test platform for studying many-body interactions associated with various plasma phenomena. In this paper we discuss an approach that makes possible creation of the steady-state ultracold plasma having various densities and temperatures by means of continuous two-step optical excitation of calcium atoms in the MOT. The parameters of the plasma are studied using laser-induced fluorescence of calcium ions. The experimental results are well described by a simple theoretical model involving equilibration of the continuous source of charged particles by the hydrodynamical ion outflux and three-body recombination. The strongly coupled plasma with the peak ion density of $6\cdot10^5$ cm$^{-3}$ and the minimum electron temperature near 2 K has been prepared. Our steady-state approach in combination with the strong magnetic confinement of the plasma will make it possible to reach extremely strong coupling in such system.

25. Synthesis of fluorocarbon nanofilms on titanium using high-power KrF laser radiation

Abstract

Fluorocarbon (C : F) nanofilms up to 60 nm thick are synthesised on a titanium surface. The films are obtained by annealing thin layers of fluorocarbon oil (FO) (with an area of 0.6 cm2) in air with pulsed (80-ns) KrF laser radiation having a fluence of more than 4 J cm-2. The strength of C : F nanocoatings turns out to be comparable with that of titanium and exceeds several hundred times the corresponding characteristics of Teflon F-4. The high transparency of FO indicates a possibility of using it as a cover liquid when modifying titanium surface using beams of various technological lasers.

Abstract

Conclusion The use of UTR in an electron-beam ArF laser has made it possible to improve the divergence by approximately 15 times compared with a planar cavity, at an energy lower by a factor 1.7 (at the same working gas mixture pressure). The obtained value of ? is only 12 times larger than the diffraction level (calculated at the E/2 level for a UTR with M=2).

Abstract

An enormous scientific and technical potential, created by Russian scientists for a period of the previous twenty years, has not been realized in the commercial fabrication of mixed oxide fuel for nuclear power reactors. However, the activities on improving these methods of MOX fuel fabrication are in progress at experimental plants of Russian scientific centers. The production of granulated mixed oxides of uranium and plutonium by means of the hydrogranulation process (coprecipitation of uranium and plutonium hydroxides in the presence of high molecular compounds) is one of such methods. In order to check this method experimentally under continuous operation, a pilot plant called 'Granat-M,' was constructed (Figure 1) in SSC RF VNIINM, named after the academician A. A. Bochvar. Abstract

A therapeutic effect has been studied of the drug apizartron of the ESPARMA GmbH firm (Osterweddingen, Germany) in those patients presenting with damaged lumbar spine. The ointment apizartron has been shown to alleviate the pain syndrome and myotonic (spastic) reactions, with its effect having been somewhat less pronounced on radicular compression, neurodystrophic disorders, and on the arterial bloodflow of the inferior limbs. The drug is recommended for use in a complex therapy of vertebrogenic disorders of the lumbar spine.

Abstract

A total of 198 patients with massive blood loss and grave combined injury treated at the intensive care ward were monitored for 5 days. This paper presents data on the blood content of peripheral tissues assessed by rheovasography and the time course of coagulating characteristics of the blood and fibrinolysis. Despite the stabilization of arterial pressure in the first hours of treatment, disorders of tissue perfusion persisted for 5 days. Signs of disseminated intravascular coagulation were detected as soon as after 6 h in the presence of expressed progressing thrombinemia, decelerated fibrinolysis in the blood plasma, thrombocytopenia, and consumption of some blood clotting factors. According to our data, disseminated intravascular blood coagulation in the microvessels is possible after 12 h and reaches its maximum on day 2 of treatment; it persisted over the entire follow-up (5 days) period and was associated with clinically manifest involvement of the functions of parenchymatous organs and systems starting from the end of the first or beginning of the second day of treatment.

Abstract

The article analyses the late-term results of operations on 46 patients for paroxysms of supraventricular tachyarrhythmias (SVTA) which were refractory to prophylactic administration of antiarrhythmics. Transvenous electrodestruction of the atrio-ventricular junction were carried out in 39 patients. The results were good in 34 and satisfactory in 3 patients; conductivity and paroxysms reappeared in 2 patients. ++Anti-tachycardial ECS were implanted in 6 patients with good results. One patient underwent electrodestruction of an accessory conduction tract of the type of Kent's bundle with a stable clinical effect. The results of the study provide evidence of the high efficacy of surgical management of complex SVTA in a regional cardiosurgical center.

Abstract

116 patients with massive blood loss and trauma have been studied in intensive care units. It has been established that the main reason for the onset of hypoxemia in "shock lung" is disturbed gas exchange in the lungs due to an expanded physiological dead space (VD/VT) and blood shunting in the lungs (QS/QT). Intravascular blood coagulation is one of the main reasons for the development and maintenance of systemic hypoperfusion in the lung tissue. Progressive increase in venous admixture during inhalation of 100% oxygen over a five-day treatment period is due to an increased number of still blood-supplied but already unventilated affected alveoli.
