Using humor as a caregiving strategy can help professionals perceive daily and work-related events from a more optimistic and light-hearted perspective. The main objective of this study was to analyze humor styles among health care professionals. A cross-sectional and correlational design was employed. Data were collected using the Humor Styles Questionnaire, which measures four humor styles: affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive, and self-defeating humor. Health care professionals scored higher in positive humor than negative humor. Age exhibited a negative correlation with positive humor. Significant differences were observed between marital status and affiliative and self-enhancing humor, professional category and hospital unit with aggressive humor, shift work and self-enhancing humor, and type of contract and experience with affiliative humor. Health care professionals employ various humor styles based on their social and work contexts. It is crucial for health care professionals to receive training in the use of positive humor to consciously avoid humor styles that can hinder well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the reliability and validity of the Humour Styles Questionnaire (HSQ) in a sample of Spanish healthcare professionals. Design: A cross‐sectional study. Methods: The version of HSQ translated into Spanish by Cayssials and Pérez was used to validate on a sample of healthcare professionals (N = 250). The reliability analysed the Crombach's α coefficient and Pearson's correlation coefficient between the factors and the total scale score. The Exploratory Factor Analysis was carried out with Kaiser's criteria for the extraction of factors with Varimax rotation. Results: HSQ in this study sample reproduced the similar structure of the original version with four factors (affiliative, self‐enhancing, aggressive and self‐defeating humour). These factors explained 44.46% of the total variance and Cronbach's ranged from 0.64–0.79. Global HSQ scale reliability was 0.82. Conclusion: The HSQ is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing humour in healthcare professionals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Heart failure (HF) is a complex clinical syndrome that impairs the ability to achieve proper filling or ejection, in which patients have typical symptoms and signs. It is a major Public Health problem with a high incidence and prevalence associated with high morbidity and mortality. The management of the patient with HF is complex, requiring in its treatment the work of specialized multidisciplinary teams in which the management of cardiac-healthy habits and self-care will play a leading role. Knowing the health literacy (HL) level of patients is a fundamental piece that will help us to provide a holistic attention, based on individual needs, promoting in this way the empowerment of the patient. Our aim will be to evaluate the effectiveness of an HL intervention for improving quality of life and decreasing morbidity/mortality., Methods: A two-arm randomized controlled clinical trial will be conducted, with concealment of randomization. Patients with diagnosis of HF attended in cardiology and internal medicine consultations of 5 hospitals in Spain will be included.

In the last decade, the participation of nurses in research has increased and different roles have emerged in this area: clinical research nurse, research nurse, research support nurse and research consumer nurse. In this regard, the terms clinical research nurse and research nurse are often confused and used interchangeably. However, these are four different profiles, because the functions, training requirements, skills and responsibilities of these vary considerably and that is why it seems interesting to define the contents and competencies of each of them.

Background: The constant increase in the aging population will lead to a greater demand for high-quality nursing care for this population over the coming years. Early detection and proper treatment of great geriatric syndromes are essential and, consequently, geriatric nurses must acquire the necessary competencies for their adequate management., Objectives: To evaluate the acquisition of the necessary nursing competencies for adequate management of great geriatric syndromes through high-fidelity simulation training and to explore undergraduate nursing students' perceptions about this training., Methods: 80 undergraduate nursing students participated in a mixed methods study. The simulated scenarios recreated older patients with diagnoses of great geriatric syndromes using standardized patients. Nursing competencies were evaluated using a verification list. 10 focus groups were interviewed to explore their perceptions, conducting a qualitative study with an interpretative approach., Results: Most of the students (86.55 %) acquired the necessary nursing competencies for adequate management of great geriatric syndromes. The nursing students stated that they improved their communication skills (provide solutions to older patients; facilitate and redirect the clinical interview; contrast the information given to the patient), psychological resources (psychological support; physical contact and accompaniment; empathy and persuasion), and geriatric knowledge (identify their lack of knowledge; recognize their limits in terms of healthcare and refer to other health professionals; know the patient's conditions) to provide quality care for older people diagnosed with great geriatric syndromes., Conclusions: The use of high-fidelity simulation training including standardized patients makes it easier for nursing students to acquire the necessary nursing competencies for adequate management of great geriatric syndromes and improve their clinical skills. Introduction: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a condition which requires, among others, the administration of bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory drugs to control the disease. They help to keep the airways clear and prevent the buildup of fluid and mucus. Inhalation is the most widely used form of administrating the medication because of its local and rapid action which normally is done by aerosol therapy. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of two aerosol methods in clearing the airways of COPD patients, admitted with an exacerbation due to their disease. It also aims to evaluate its effects on the length of stay, oxygen saturation, dyspnea, autonomy and complications., Methods: Randomized clinical trial. Traditional method (control group) and positive expiratory vibrating device (intervention group): two ways to deliver aerosol were compared. The following outcome variables were considered: length of stay, days of fever, oxygen saturation, need for NIV or VM, the basic activities of daily living index autonomy (Barthel), dyspnea (Borg scale) and peak-flow., Results: 39 patients were included. Regarding hospital stay, patients in the intervention group spend an average of one day less in hospital. Also in this group there were fewer readmissions. No statistically significant differences were found in the remaining variables., Conclusions: The inhalation treatment with a vibrating device with positive exhalation, appears to reduce the length of stay and prevent readmissions. It is important to continue research on non-pharmacological interventions as to achieve the prevention of relapses.
