Abstract

The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". Abstract

This work evaluates the technical feasibility of a roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavement with complete replacement of natural aggregates by electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) or basic oxygen furnace slag (BOFS). The methodology includes, initially, the processing of the slags, and physical, chemical, and environmental characterization of the natural and slag aggregates. Subsequently, concrete mixtures were designed, and the compaction at optimum moisture was performed. Finally, the behavior of specimens under service and their mechanical performance were evaluated. Results show that both EAFS and BOFS enhance the RCC's compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. The RCC produced with BOFS aggregates presented some expansibility due to its high contents of chemically active finer-than-75-µm materials and higher porosity. The EAFS aggregate was stable in durability analysis. In conclusion, through optimal mixture proportions and using compatible energy compression, it is viable to produce pavements with EAFS steelmaking slag in efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly manners. 22. MOLECULAR SIGNALLING RESPONSE TO SHORT DURATION HIGH INTENSITY/LOW VOLUME RESISTANCE TRAINING IN HUMAN SKELETAL MUSCLE

Abstract

Introduction Resistance training (RT) is one of the most important stimuli for muscle hypertrophy, but it may play also an important role on weight loss and fat acid (FA) oxidation increase. It has been largely demonstrated that RT affects anabolic signalling molecule phosphorylation but, considering the numerous variables of RT, the differences between training modalities has been till now poorly investigated. The aim of this study was to assess Akt, 4EBP1, S6 and AMPK, ACC signalling after a single bout of high-intensity resistance training (HIRT) and of traditional resistance training (TRT). Methods 12 healthy subjects performed in two different moments and with different legs HIRT and TRT protocol. HIRT consisted in 2 sets of 6/2/2 reps with incomplete rest between (20”) sets while TRT consisted of 4 sets x15 reps with 1’15” of rest between sets. Biopsies from the vastus lateralis were taken one week before training sessions (pre), immediately after (T0), 6 hours after (T6) and 24 hours after (T24) training. Results No significant differences were found at any of time points after exercise in AKT and 4EBP1 phosphorylation. There was a significant increase in S6 phosphorylation at T6 both in HIRT and TRT. S6-P remained at higher level even at T24. Exercise intensity does not seem to influence the response of AMPK: AMPK-P decreased after both kind of RT, with a greater decrease at T6 during TRT. On the other hand, pACC activity increased immediately after HIRT and decrease after TRT, no significant differences were measured at T6 and T24. mRNA analysis showed that HIRT seems to be more related to mechanical deformation (MGF), while the TRT seems to act on IGF-1 pathway. Discussion Our findings suggest that a less time commitment resistance training technique is, at least, equally effective to induce an increase of S6-P. The increase of the S6-P without a concomitant increase of AKT-P could be explained by an AKT-independent S6 phosphorylation. The increase of the phosphorylated form of ACC in HIRT, but not in TRT, may suggests a greater FA oxidation with high intensity/low volume resistance training compared to traditional technique. This data seems confirm that the manipulation of different variables of RT induces different molecular and metabolic responses related to the activation of specific muscle signaling pathways. Abstract

A number of methods for determining upper body maximal strength are present. The 1-RM is defined as the maximum amount of resistance that can be performed for only 1 repetition and it has been shown to be reliable in various populations. Further, setting an intensity of resistance training based on a percentage of the 1-RM has been found to be effective for improving outcomes such as muscle strength, muscle power, and muscle hypertrophy. Little is known about the metabolic cost of 1RM evaluation and which is the optimal recovery time between sessions. We analyzed the physiological response during a standardized protocol of 1RM-Bench Press Test (1RM-BP). Fourteen healthy subjects (25,6±7,4 yrs; 166,3±0,9 cm; 65,6±13,2 kg) performed a 1RM-BP following standardized procedures. VO2 and Heart Rate ware measured before, during and after the BP performance while Systolic (Sys) and Diastolic (Dys) pressure were measured only before and after the test. At the e! nd of the 1RM-BP , Blood Lactate (BL)was assessed and participants were asked for perceived exertion according with the Borg Scale (RPE). The protocol consisted of five steps; 15 repetitions with � of the subjects body weight were performed in the first step, subsequently weight was added up to ½ of bodyweight and a maximal number of repetitions were performed. In the third step the participants executed the theoretical 1RM-BP according to the Mayhew’s formula that considers the number of repetitions completed with ½ bodyweight of each subject. The other steps ware performed only if the third one was completed, if not 2-5% more weight was added on the barbell until 1RM was obtained, this was repeated if necessary for a maximum of other 2 times. The results show that there are no significant differences in VO2 values between male and female, only in the second step (½ Bodyweight) males achieve higher results (p=0,0032). BL was significantly! higher in male(p=0,042) even if %Lean mass was not quite significantly higher than female(p=0,0532). The most interesting result is shown by Pearson’s correlation between %Lean mass vs 1RM-BP; male were positively correlated( r=0,61) while female were negatively (r=-0,65). Unexpected results need to be confirmed by a larger number of participants, but at this stage this study shows that in any case there are gender differences. Furthermore, this study confirms the reliability, feasibility and safety of the 1RM-BP.

Abstract

Introduction Despite the increasing use of low carbohydrates/ketogenic diets (KD) on weight control and management of metabolic syndrome (Westman et al., 2007) there are paucity of researches about effects of KD diets on sport performances (Phinney et al., 1983a, 1983b). KD diets maybe useful in sports with weight class divisions. The aim of our study was to investigate the influence of KD on explosive strength performance, specifically in elite artistic gymnasts. Methods 8 male subjects (age 20.9 +/- 5.5 yrs) were recruited. Several physical and performance tests (body composition analysis, hanging straight leg raise, ground push up, parallel bars push up, pull up, squat jump, countermovement jump, 30 sec continuous jumps) were administered before and after 20 days of KD with support of phytoextract (Tisanoreica Diet; Paoli et al., 2010). During the KD the athletes consumes less than 20g of CHO per day and performed the normal training program. After three months the same protocol of tests (during a similar training period) was performed before and after 20 days of typical mediterranean diet. Results We utilized a repeated-measure t-test. No significant differences were detected between KD and Mediterranean diets in Squat Jump, countermovement jump, parallel bars push up and pull up but there are nearly significant increase during KD in ground push up and hanging straight leg. A more clear significant differences were detected on body composition: after KD there was a decrease of Kg of fat (from 4.95 +/- 1.05 to 3.92 +/- 1.05 p

41. Reduction of Peritendinous adhesions by hydrogel containing biocompatible phospholipid polymer MPC for tendon repair.

Abstract

Background: Peritendinous adhesions are serious complications after surgical repair of tendons. As an anti-adhesion material, we focused on 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) polymer, our original biocompatible polymer, and prepared an aqueous solution of MPC-containing polymer called poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine-co-n-butyl methacrylate-co-p-vinylphenylboronic acid) (PMBV), which can be formed into hydrogel properties by mixture with another aqueous polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The objective of the present study was to examine the possible application of the MPC hydrogel for the reduction of peritendinous adhesions.Methods: the effects of the hydrogel on peritendinous adhesions and tendon healing were examined by means of histological and mechanical analyses in a rat Achilles tendon model and a rabbit flexor digitorum profundus tendon model. Cell migration and viability were examined with use of fibroblastic NIH3T3 cells cultured in a double chamber dish.Results: among the concentrations examined, 2.5% and 5.0% PMBV formed hydrogel properties immediately after mixing with 2.5% PVA and maintained a honeycomb microstructure with nanometer-scaled pores for three weeks after implantation. In animal models, the hydrogel formed from 5.0% PMBV remained at the sutured site during the critical period up to three weeks and disappeared by six weeks. The MPC hydrogel reduced the peritendinous adhesions histologically and mechanically by >25% at three weeks, without impairing tendon healing as determined with mechanical analyses. In the cell culture, cell migration was reduced by the MPC hydrogel, although cell viability was unaffected, indicating physical prevention, rather than cytotoxicity, to be the anti-adhesion mechanism.Conclusions: the MPC hydrogel that was formed by a local injection and mixture of two aqueous solutions, 5.0% PMBV and 2.5% PVA, reduced peritendinous adhesions without impairing tendon healing. This effect may be due to its excellent biocompatibility without a foreign-body reaction and the formation of a microstructure that physically prevents passage of cells but allows cytokines and growth factors to pass for healing.Clinical Relevance: this nanotechnology could potentially improve the quality of surgical repair of tendon, especially the zone-II area of the digital flexor tendon. 43. Neonatal end-of-life care: a review of the research literature.

Abstract

While advances in neonatal medicine have increased the possibility of sustaining life for many infants, more infants still die in the neonatal period (birth to 27 days of life) than those in any other time in childhood. Despite this statistic, there still remains much that is unknown about both the needs and the care of these critically ill babies. Palliative care is a viable option for many of these infants and their families. However, palliative care is rarely provided as an option for families. To provide healthcare providers with an overview of palliative and end-of-life care for infants in the neonatal period, we conducted an integrative review of the current research literature. A total of 10 articles were selected for the review. Findings from these studies were summarized in 1 of 4 categories: practices of withdrawing or withholding life-sustaining treatment, pain management during ventilator withdrawal, parents and the decision-making process, and the dying process. CO2 and SO2 emissions from Chilean copper production were quantitatively evaluated using life-cycle assessment techniques, with inventories such as the fuel consumption of unit processes based on published papers. CO2 emissions were about 0.88 kg per kg pyrometallurgical Cu and 2.36 kg per kg hydrometallurgical Cu, with respective electricity consumption of 1.9 kWh and 3.0 kWh. Smelter-derived sulphuric acid is used for leaching, accounting for much of the variance in CO2 emissions accredited to the two processes. SO2 emissions are estimated as 0.19 kg per kg pyro- and 0.23 kg per kg hydrometallurgical Cu. The two process routes have a complementary relationship with regard to H2SO4.
