We study a new diluted magnetic semiconductor system based on the spin of the ionized acceptor Cr$^+$. We show that the negatively charged Cr$^+$ ion, an excited state of the Cr in II-VI semiconductor, can be stable when inserted in a CdTe quantum dot (QD). The Cr$^+$ attracts a heavy-hole in the QD and form a stable hole-Cr$^+$ complex. Optical probing of this system reveals a ferromagnetic coupling between heavy-holes and Cr$^+$ spins. At low temperature, the thermalization on the ground state of the hole-Cr$^+$ system with parallel spins prevents the optical recombination of the excess electron on the 3$d$ shell of the atom. We study the dynamics of the nano-magnet formed by the hole-Cr$^+$ exchange interaction. The ferromagnetic ground states with M$_z$=$\pm$4 can be controlled by resonant optical pumping and a spin relaxation time in the 20 $\mu$s range is obtained at T=4.2 K. This spin memory at zero magnetic field is limited by the interaction with phonons.

We demonstrate radio-frequency tuning of the energy of individual CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots (QDs) by Surface Acoustic Waves (SAWs). Despite the very weak piezoelectric coefficient of ZnTe, SAW in the GHz range can be launched on a ZnTe surface using interdigitated transducers deposited on a c-axis oriented ZnO layer grown on ZnTe containing CdTe QDs. The photoluminescence (PL) of individual QDs is used as a nanometer-scale sensor of the acoustic strain field. The energy of QDs is modulated by SAW in the GHz range and leads to characteristic broadening of time-integrated PL spectra. The dynamic modulation of the QD PL energy can also be detected in the time domain using phase-locked time domain spectroscopy. This technique is in particular used for monitoring complex local acoustic fields resulting from the superposition of two or more SAW pulses in a cavity. Under magnetic field, the dynamic spectral tuning of a single QD by SAW can be used to generate single photons with alternating circular polarization controlled in the GHz range.

We analyse the influence of optically generated non-equilibrium phonons on the spin relaxation and effective spin temperature of an individual Cr atom inserted in a quantum dot. Using a three pulses pump-probe technique, we show that the spin relaxation measured in resonant optical pumping experiments strongly depends on the optical excitation conditions. We observe for an isolated Cr in the dark a heating time shorter than a few hundreds $ns$ after an initial high power non-resonant excitation pulse. A cooling time larger than a few tens of $\mu s$, independent on the excitation, is obtained in the same experimental conditions. We show that a tunable spin-lattice coupling dependent on the density of non-equilibrium phonons can explain the observed dynamics. Low energy excitation conditions are found where the Cr spin states S$_z$=$\pm$1 can be efficiently populated by a non-resonant optical excitation, prepared and read-out by resonant optical pumping and conserved in the dark during a few $\mu$s.

The Chaplygin gas model, characterized by an equation of state of the type $p = - \frac{A}{\rho}$ emerges naturally from the Nambu-Goto action of string theory. This fluid representation can be recast under the form of a tachyonic field given by a Born-Infeld type Lagrangian. At the same time, the Chaplygin gas equation of state can be obtained from a self-interacting scalar field. We show that, from the point of view of the supernova type Ia data, the three representations (fluid, tachyonic, scalar field) lead to the same results. However, concerning the matter power spectra, while the fluid and tachyonic descriptions lead to exactly the same results, the self-interacting scalar field representation implies different statistical estimations for the parameters. In particular, the estimation for the dark matter density parameter in the fluid representation favors a universe dominated almost completely by dark matter, while in the self-interacting scalar field representation the prediction is very closed to that obtained in the $\Lambda$CDM model., Comment: Latex file, 10 pages, 18 figures in EPS format

Differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries for $\pi^0$ photoproduction have been measured at $E_\gamma$ = 1.5--2.4 GeV and at the $\pi^0$ scattering angles, --1 $<$ cos$\Theta_{c.m.} <$ --0.6. The energy-dependent slope of differential cross sections for $u$-channel $\pi^0$ production has been determined. An enhancement at backward angles is found above $E_\gamma$ = 2.0 GeV. This is inferred to be due to the $u$-channel contribution and/or resonances. Photon beam asymmetries have been obtained for the first time at backward angles. Differential cross sections and decay asymmetries for coherent $\phi$-meson photoproduction from deuterons were measured for the first time at forward angles using linearly polarized photons at $E_{\gamma}$= 1.5-2.4 GeV. This reaction offers a unique way to directly access natural-parity Pomeron dynamics and gluon exchange at low energies. The cross sections at zero degrees increase with increasing photon energy. The decay asymmetries demonstrate a complete dominance of natural-parity exchange processes, showing that isovector unnatural-parity $\pi$-meson exchange is small. Nevertheless the deduced cross sections of $\phi$-mesons from nucleons contributed by isoscalar t-channel exchange processes are not well described by the conventional Pomeron model., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. Photoproduction of $\phi$-meson on protons was studied by means of linearly polarized photons at forward angles in the low-energy region from threshold to $E_{\gamma}$= 2.37 GeV. The differential cross sections at $t = -|t|_{min}$ do not increase smoothly as $E_{\gamma}$ increases, but show a local maximum at around 2.0 GeV. The angular distributions demonstrate that $\phi$-mesons are photo-produced predominantly by helicity-conserving processes, and the local maximum is not likely due to unnatural-parity processes., Comment: 6 pages, error on the cross sections were corrected, accepted for publication in Phys. The photo-production of $\phi$ mesons from Li, C, Al, and Cu at forward angles has been measured at $E_gamma$=1.5--2.4 GeV. The number of events for incoherent phi photo-production is found to have a target mass number dependence of $A^{0.72\pm 0.07}$ in the kinematical region of $|t|\le 0.6$ ${\rm GeV}^2/c^2$. The total cross section of the $\phi$-nucleon interaction, $\sigma_{\phi N}$, has been estimated as $35^{+17}_{-11}$ mb using the $A$-dependence of the $\phi$ photo-production yield and a Glauber-type multiple scattering theory. Beam polarization asymmetries for the p(gamma,K+)Lambda and p(gamma,K+)sigma0 reactions are measured for the first time for Egamma=1.5-2.4 GeV and 0.6

We present a measurement of the mean intensity of the hydrogen-ionizing background radiation field at low redshift using 906 Ly-alpha absorption lines in 151 quasar spectra from the archives of the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Using a maximum likelihood technique and the best estimates possible for each QSO's Lyman limit flux and systemic redshift, we find J(\nu_{0})= 7.6^{+9.4}_{-3.0} x 10^{-23} ergs s^{-1} cm^{-2} Hz^{-1} sr^{-1} at 0.03 < z < 1.67. This is in good agreement with the mean intensity expected from models of the background which incorporate only the known quasar population. When the sample is divided into two subsamples, consisting of lines with z < 1 and z > 1, the values of J(\nu_{0}) found are 6.5^{+38.}_{-1.6} x 10^{-23} ergs s^{-1} cm^{-2} Hz^{-1} sr^{-1}, and 1.0^{+3.8}_{-0.2} x 10^{-22} ergs s^{-1} cm^{-2} Hz^{-1} sr^{-1}, respectively, indicating that the mean intensity of the background is evolving over the redshift range of this data set. Relaxing the assumption that the spectral shapes of the sample spectra and the background are identical, the best fit HI photoionization rates are found to be 6.7 x 10^{-13} s^{-1} for all redshifts, and 1.9 x 10^{-13} s^{-1} and 1.3 x 10^{-12} s^{-1} for z < 1 and z > 1, respectively., Comment: 8 Latex pages, 3 encapsulated Postscript figures, uses newpasp.sty, to appear in "Extragalactic Gas at Low Redshfit", ASP Conf. The gravitational instability of inhomogeneities in the expanding universe is studied by the relativistic second-order approximation. Using the tetrad formalism we consider irrotational dust universes and get equations very similar to those given in the Lagrangian perturbation theory in Newtonian cosmology. Neglecting the cosmological constant and assuming a flat background model we give the solutions of the nonlinear dynamics of cosmological perturbations.
