We present a joint analysis of high-resolution CO(2-1) and Paschen-$\alpha$ emission lines to trace gas dynamics and spatially resolved star formation in ASPECS-LP.3mm.06, a $z=1.1$ main sequence galaxy. Utilizing data from the ALMA and JWST NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS), we explore both ionized gas and molecular gas within this galaxy. With a substantial molecular gas fraction (f$_\mathrm{mol}$ = 0.44 $\pm$ 0.02), ASPECS-LP.3mm.06 remains on the star-forming main sequence and adheres to the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation, indicating typical gas-to-star conversion efficiency. Our analysis reveals extended structures across multiple wavelengths, suggesting regulated star formation within a stable disk. The spatially resolved star formation efficiency (SFE) and kinematic analysis indicate that ASPECS-LP.3mm.06 features a smooth mass assembly process across bulge and disk. Additionally, the galaxy exhibits modest dust extinction (A$_\mathrm{V}$ = 0.8), potentially linked to self-regulation during bulge formation. These findings position ASPECS-LP.3mm.06 as a prototypical galaxy, offering valuable insights into the mechanisms governing normal disk galaxy growth at z$\sim$1., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We present JWST/NIRSpec PRISM spectroscopic characterization of GHZ9 at z= 10.145 $\pm$ 0.010, currently the most distant source detected by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum reveals several UV high-ionization lines, including CII, SiIV, [NIV], CIV, HeII, OIII], NIII], and CIII]. The prominent rest-frame equivalent widths (EW(CIV)$\simeq$65A, EW(HeII)$\simeq$18A, EW(CIII])$\simeq$48A) show the presence of a hard radiation field, while the analysis of line ratio diagnostics suggest this galaxy hosts both AGN and star-formation activity. GHZ9 is nitrogen-enriched (6--9.5 times solar), carbon-poor (0.2--0.65 times solar), metal-poor (Z = 0.01--0.1 Z$_{\odot}$), and compact ($<$ 106 pc), similarly to GNz11, GHZ2, and recently discovered N-enhanced high redshift objects. We exploited the newly available JWST/NIRSpec and NIRCam dataset to perform an independent analysis of the Chandra data confirming that GHZ9 is the most likely JWST source associated to X-ray emission at 0.5-7 keV. Assuming a spectral index $\Gamma$ = 2.3 (1.8), we estimate a black hole (BH) mass of 1.60 $\pm$ 0.31 (0.48 $\pm$ 0.09) $\times$ 10$^8$M$_{\odot}$, which is consistent either with Eddington-accretion onto heavy ($\geq$ 10$^6$ M$_{\odot}$) BH seeds formed at z=18, or super-Eddington accretion onto a light seed of $\sim$ 10$^2-10^4$ M$_{\odot}$ at z = 25. The corresponding BH-to-stellar mass ratio M$_{BH}$/M$_{star}$= 0.33$\pm$0.22 (0.10$\pm$0.07), with a stringent limit $>$0.02, implies an accelerated growth of the BH mass with respect to the stellar mass. GHZ9 is the ideal target to constrain the early phases of AGN-galaxy coevolution with future multi-frequency observations., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We report the identification of two galaxy overdensities at $z\sim5.7$ in the sightline of the galaxy cluster Abell 2744. These overdensities consist of 25 and 17 member galaxies, spectroscopically confirmed with JWST NIRSpec/MSA and NIRCam/WFSS. Each overdensity has a total stellar mass of $\sim2\times10^{10} M_\odot$ and a star formation rate of $\sim200 M_\odot$/yr within a central region of radius $R=2$ Mpc (physical). The sensitive PRISM spectra allow us to identify six galaxies that show weak Ha+[NII] emissions within the overdensities ($27\pm6\%$), whereas the fraction of such galaxies is found significantly lower ($6\pm2\%$) in field samples of the equivalent redshift range. These weak emission line galaxies, dubbed as wELGs, exhibit a strong continuum break at $4000$AA rest-frame, a characteristic feature of evolved stellar populations. The high observed fraction of wELGs in the two overdensities is consistent with the idea that high-density environments are an ideal site where galaxies can accelerate their evolutionary pace compared to field analogs. Our study pinpoints an early onset of environmental effects, already important within one billion years after the Big Bang, and provides a complementary perspective on the emergence of quenched, massive galaxies at lower redshifts. Integral field spectroscopy (IFS) is a powerful tool for understanding the formation of galaxies across cosmic history. We present the observing strategy and first results of MSA-3D, a novel JWST program using multi-object spectroscopy in a slit-stepping strategy to produce IFS data cubes. The program observed 43 normal star-forming galaxies at redshifts $0.5 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.5$, corresponding to the epoch when spiral thin-disk galaxies of the modern Hubble sequence are thought to emerge, obtaining kpc-scale maps of rest-frame optical nebular emission lines with spectral resolution $R\simeq2700$. Here we describe the multiplexed slit-stepping method which is $>15$ times more efficient than the NIRSpec IFS mode for our program. As an example of the data quality, we present a case study of an individual galaxy at $z=1.104$ (stellar mass $M_{*} = 10^{10.3}~M_{\odot}$, star formation rate~$=3~M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) with prominent face-on spiral structure. We show that the galaxy exhibits a rotationally supported disk with moderate velocity dispersion ($\sigma = 36^{+5}_{-4}$~\kms), a negative radial metallicity gradient ($-0.020\pm0.002$~dex\,kpc$^{-1}$), a dust attenuation gradient, and an exponential star formation rate density profile which closely matches the stellar continuum. These properties are characteristic of local spirals, indicating that mature galaxies are in place at $z\sim1$. We also describe the customized data reduction and original cube-building software pipelines which we have developed to exploit the powerful slit-stepping technique. Our results demonstrate the ability of JWST slit-stepping to study galaxy populations at intermediate to high redshifts, with data quality similar to current surveys of the $z\sim0.1$ universe., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, 1 table; submitted to ApJ, comments welcome. We present new results on the rest-frame UV luminosity function (UVLF) and stellar mass-to-light (M/L) ratio of bright (M$_{\rm UV}\lesssim-20$ mag) spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies at $z=7-9$ derived from the BoRG-$JWST$ survey, a unique data set of NIRSpec prism follow up of $HST$-selected sources from random-pointing imaging. By selecting galaxies from over 200 independent sight lines, the survey minimizes cosmic variance ensuring a statistically robust sample of the bright-galaxy population during the epoch of reionization. The data is used to constrain, for the first time, the bright end of the UVLF at $z=7-9$ from spectroscopically-confirmed galaxies over eight independent fields. We find that the bright end of the UVLF is higher than found using imaging over $JWST$ legacy fields, suggesting the latter may be significantly affected by cosmic variance, and thus reducing the tension with recent findings from $JWST$ at $z>10$ and comparable to models invoking little dust attenuation and bursty star formation. Additionally, we use the galaxies' $JWST$ spectra to infer their stellar masses and M/L ratios relative to other $HST$ and $JWST$ studies. We show that the stellar mass scales almost linearly with UV luminosity (M$_* \propto L_{\rm UV}^{0.85\pm0.12}$), albeit with large ($\sim0.5$ dex) intrinsic scatter, consistent with stochastic bursts of star formation in early galaxy formation., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

We present the BoRG-JWST survey, a combination of two JWST Cycle 1 programs aimed at obtaining NIRSpec spectroscopy of representative, UV-bright $75$, highlighting the large abundance of high-redshift galaxies even in individual WFC3 pointings. The primary sample span an absolute magnitude range $-20.47$ sources currently known and comparable to the brightest sources at $z>10$. Prominent [O III]+H$\beta$ lines are found across the full sample, while a stack of sources reveals a plethora of other rest-optical lines and additional rest-UV C III]1909 \r{A} emission. Despite their luminosities, none of the low-resolution spectra display evidence for Type 1 AGN activity based on a search for broad-line emission. Lastly, we present a spectroscopic data release of 188 confirmed $0.5\lesssim z\lesssim5.0$ sources from filler MSA observations, highlighting the legacy value of the survey and a representative benchmark for comparisons to deep field observations., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, comments welcome

We report JWST/NIRSpec observations of a star-forming galaxy at $z=2.76$, MACSJ1149-WR1. We securely detect two temperature-sensitive auroral lines, [SIII]6312 (7.4$\sigma$) and [OII]7320+7331 doublets (10$\sigma$), and tentatively [NII]5755 ($2.3\sigma$) for the first time in an individual galaxy at $z>1$. We perform a detailed analysis of its interstellar media (ISM), and derive electron temperatures, various heavy element abundances (O/H, N/O, S/O, and Ar/O) in the hot ionized region, and the neutral fraction in the warm ionized region. MACSJ1149-WR1 shows a broad feature at the wavelength of HeII 4686, which consists of a broad ($\sim1000$km/s), blue-shifted ($\sim-110$km/s) line component. Taken together with its mildly elevated N/O abundance, we conclude that MACSJ1149-WR1 is experiencing a young starburst ($<10$Myr), likely hosting a large number of Wolf-Rayet stars. None of its spectral features support the presence of AGN, including: $(i)$ the absence of broad components and velocity shifts in Hydrogen recombination lines, $(ii)$ low [FeII]${\rm 1.257 \mu m}$/Pa$\beta$ ratio, and $(iii)$ the absence of high-ionization lines. Our analysis using HeI lines reveals a higher electron temperature and a higher attenuation value, indicating that HeI may probe a smaller spatial scale than HI, presumably the region dominated by the aforementioned Wolf-Rayet stars. The star formation rates derived from various HeI lines broadly agree with those from Hydrogen recombination lines. We spectroscopically confirm the $M_{\rm UV} = -20.5$ mag galaxy GHZ2/GLASS-z12 to be at redshift $z=12.34$. The source was selected via NIRCam photometry in GLASS-JWST ERS data, providing the first evidence of a surprising abundance of bright galaxies at $z \gtrsim 10$. The NIRSpec PRISM spectrum shows detections of N IV, C IV, He II, O III, C III, O II, and Ne III lines, and the first detection at high-redshift of the O III Bowen fluorescence line at 3133 {\AA} rest-frame. The prominent C IV line with rest-frame equivalent width (EW) $\approx 46$ {\AA} puts GHZ2 in the category of extreme C IV emitters. GHZ2 displays UV lines with EWs that are only found in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or composite objects at low/intermediate redshifts. The UV line-intensity ratios are compatible both with AGNs and star formation in a low-metallicity environment, with the low limit on the [Ne IV]/[N IV] ratio favoring a stellar origin of the ionizing photons. We discuss a possible scenario in which the high ionizing output is due to low metallicity stars forming in a dense environment. We estimate a metallicity $\lesssim 0.1 Z/{\rm Z}_{\odot}$, a high ionization parameter logU $> -2$, a N/O abundance 4--5 times the solar value, and a subsolar C/O ratio similar to the recently discovered class of nitrogen-enhanced objects. Considering its abundance patterns and the high stellar mass density ($10^4$~M$_{\odot}$~pc$^{-2}$), GHZ2 is an ideal formation site for the progenitors of today's globular clusters. The exceptional spectra of the most luminous $z>10$ sources observed so far have challenged our understanding of early galaxy evolution, requiring a new observational benchmark for meaningful interpretation. As such, we construct spectroscopic templates representative of high-redshift, star-forming populations, using 482 confirmed sources at $z=5.0-12.9$ with JWST/NIRSpec prism observations, and report on their average properties. We find $z=5-11$ galaxies are dominated by blue UV continuum slopes ($\beta=-2.3$ to $-2.7$) and inverse Balmer jumps, characteristic of dust-poor and young systems, with a shift towards bluer slopes and younger ages with redshift. The evolution is mirrored by ubiquitous CIII] detections across all redshifts (EW$_{0}=5-14$ \r{A}), which increase in strength towards early times. Rest-frame optical lines reveal elevated ratios ($O32=7-31$, $R23=5-8$, and $Ne3O2=1-2$) and subsolar metallicities (log O/H$=7.3-7.9$), typical of ionization conditions and metallicities rarely observed in $z\sim0$ populations. Within our sample, we identify 57 Ly$\alpha$-emitters which we stack and compare to a matched sample of non-emitters. The former are characterized by more extreme ionizing conditions with enhanced CIII], CIV, and HeII+[OIII] line emission, younger stellar populations from inverse Balmer jumps, and a more pristine ISM seen through bluer UV slopes and elevated rest-frame optical line ratios. The novel comparison illustrates important intrinsic differences between the two populations, with implications for Ly$\alpha$ visibility. We explore the morphological features and star formation activities of [OII] emitters in the COSMOS UltraDeep field at $z \sim 1.5$ using JWST NIRCam data from the COSMOS-Web survey and Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. We also report the discovery of large filamentary structures traced by [OII] emitters, surrounding an extremely overdense core with a galaxy number density $\sim11\times$ higher than the field average. These structures span over 50 cMpc, underscoring their large scale in the cosmic web at this epoch. After matching the stellar mass distributions, the core galaxies show a higher frequency of disturbances (50$\%$ $ \pm$ 9$\%$) than those in outskirts (41$\%$ $ \pm$ 9$\%$) and the field (21$\%$ $ \pm$ 5$\%$), indicative of more frequent mergers and interactions in the innermost $\lesssim1.5 $ arcmin region. Additionally, we observe that specific star formation rates are elevated in denser environments. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test comparing the distribution of specific star formation rates of core and field galaxies yields a $\textit{p}$-value of 0.02, suggesting an enhancement of star-formation activity driven by the dense environment. We present deep JWST NIRSpec observations in the sightline of MACS J1149.5+2223, a massive cluster of galaxies at $z=0.54$. We report the spectroscopic redshift of 28 sources at $37$, i.e. comparable to the most metal poor galaxies in the local Universe. The search of primordial galaxies may be accomplished by extending toward a lower mass and/or by investigating inhomogeneities at smaller spatial scales. Lastly, we investigate potential systematics caused by the limitation of JWST's MSA observations. Caution is warranted when the target exceeds the slit size, as this situation could allow an overestimation of "global" metallicity, especially under the presence of strong negative metallicity gradient., Comment: Accepted for publication on May 29, 2024 to ApJ

We investigate galaxy sizes at redshift $z\gtrsim 6$ with the cosmological radiation-magneto-hydrodynamic simulation suite THESAN(-HR). These simulations simultaneously capture the reionization of the large-scale intergalactic medium and resolved galaxy properties. The intrinsic size ($r^{\ast}_{1/2}$) of simulated galaxies increases moderately with stellar mass at $M_{\ast} \lesssim 10^{8}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$ and decreases fast at larger masses, resulting in a hump feature at $M_{\ast}\sim 10^{8}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$ that is insensitive to redshift. Low-mass galaxies are in the initial phase of size growth and are better described by a spherical shell model with feedback-driven gas outflows competing with the cold inflows. In contrast, massive galaxies fit better with the disk formation model. They generally experience a phase of rapid compaction and gas depletion, likely driven by internal disk instability rather than external processes. We identify four compact quenched galaxies in the $(95.5\,{\rm cMpc})^{3}$ volume of THESAN-1 at $z\simeq 6$, and their quenching follows reaching a characteristic stellar surface density akin to the massive compact galaxies at cosmic noon. Compared to observations, we find that the median UV effective radius ($R^{\rm UV}_{\rm eff}$) of simulated galaxies is at least three times larger than the observed ones at $M_{\ast}\lesssim 10^{9}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$ or $M_{\rm UV}\gtrsim -20$ at $6 \lesssim z \lesssim 10$. This inconsistency, related to the hump feature of the intrinsic size--mass relation, persists across many other cosmological simulations with different galaxy formation models and demonstrates the potential of using galaxy morphology to constrain the physics of galaxy formation at high redshifts., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures. We present a measurement of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) at cosmic noon, using the JWST near-infrared wide-field slitless spectroscopy obtained by the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science program. By combining the power of JWST and the lensing magnification by the foreground cluster A2744, we extend the measurements of the MZR to the dwarf mass regime at high redshifts. A sample of 50 galaxies with several emission lines is identified across two wide redshift ranges of $z=1.8-2.3$ and $2.6-3.4$ in the stellar mass range of $\log{(M_*/M_\odot)}\in [6.9, 10.0]$. The observed slope of MZR is $0.223 \pm 0.017$ and $0.294 \pm 0.010$ at these two redshift ranges, respectively, consistent with the slopes measured in field galaxies with higher masses. In addition, we assess the impact of the morphological broadening on emission line measurement by comparing two methods of using 2D forward modeling and line profile fitting to 1D extracted spectra. We show that ignoring the morphological broadening effect when deriving line fluxes from grism spectra results in a systematic reduction of flux by $\sim30\%$ on average. This discrepancy appears to affect all the lines and thus does not lead to significant changes in flux ratio and metallicity measurements. This assessment of the morphological broadening effect using JWST data presents, for the first time, an important guideline for future work deriving galaxy line fluxes from wide-field slitless spectroscopy, such as Euclid, Roman, and the Chinese Space Station Telescope., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We report on discovery of a concentration of massive quiescent galaxies located at z=4. The concentration is first identified using high-quality photometric redshifts based on deep, mutli-band data in Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field. Follow-up near-infrared spectroscopic observations with MOSFIRE on Keck confirm a massive (~10^{11} Msun) quiescent galaxy at z=3.99. Our spectral energy distribution (SED) analyses reveal that the galaxy experienced an episode of starburst about 500 Myr prior to the observed epoch, followed by rapid quenching. As its spectrum is sufficiently good to measure the stellar velocity dispersion, we infer its dynamical mass and find that it is consistent with its stellar mass. The galaxy is surrounded by 4 massive (>10^{10} Msun) quiescent galaxies on a ~1 physical Mpc scale, all of which are consistent with being located at the same redshift based on high-accuracy spectro-photometric redshifts. This is likely a (proto-)cluster dominated by quiescent galaxies, the first of the kind reported at such a high redshift as z=4. Interestingly, it is in a large-scale structure revealed by spectroscopic redshifts from VANDELS. Furthermore, it exhibits the red sequence, adding further support to the physical concentration of the galaxies. We find no such concentration in the Illustris-TNG300 simulation; it may be that the cluster is such a rare system that the simulation box is not sufficiently large to reproduce it. The total halo mass of the quiescent galaxies is ~10^{13} Msun, suggesting that they form a group-sized halo once they collapse together. We analyze new JWST NIRCam and NIRSpec data on the redshift 9.11 galaxy MACS1149-JD1. Our NIRCam imaging data reveal that JD1 comprises three spatially distinct components. Our spectroscopic data indicate that JD1 appears dust-free but is already enriched, $12 + \log {\rm (O/H) } = 7.90^{+0.04}_{-0.05}$. We also find that the Carbon and Neon abundances in JD1 are below the solar abundance ratio. Particularly the Carbon under-abundance is suggestive of recent star formation where Type~II supernovae have already enriched the ISM in Oxygen but intermediate mass stars have not yet enriched the ISM in Carbon. A recent burst of star formation is also revealed by the star formation history derived from NIRCam photometry. Our data do not reveal the presence of a significant amount of old populations, resulting in a factor of $\sim7\times$ smaller stellar mass than previous estimates. We present a comprehensive search and analysis of high-redshift galaxies in a suite of nine public JWST extragalactic fields taken in Cycle 1, covering a total effective search area of $\sim358{\rm arcmin^2}$. Through conservative ($8\sigma$) photometric selection, we identify 341 galaxies at $51.5\,\sigma$ below the derived size-mass slope. These compact sources exhibit a high star formation surface density $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}>10\,M_\odot\,{\rm yr^{-1}\,kpc^{-2}}$, a range in which only $<0.01\,\%$ of the local star-forming galaxy sample is found. For those with available NIRSpec data, no evidence of ongoing supermassive black hole accretion is observed. A potential explanation for the observed high [OIII]-to-Hbeta ratios could be high shock velocities, likely originating within intense star-forming regions characterized by high $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$. Lastly, we find that the rest-frame UV and optical sizes of our sample are comparable. The Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) is the science module of the Canadian-built Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) onboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRISS has four observing modes: 1) broadband imaging featuring seven of the eight NIRCam broadband filters, 2) wide-field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) at a resolving power of $\sim$150 between 0.8 and 2.2 $\mu$m, 3) single-object cross-dispersed slitless spectroscopy (SOSS) enabling simultaneous wavelength coverage between 0.6 and 2.8 $\mu$m at R$\sim$700, a mode optimized for exoplanet spectroscopy of relatively bright ($J<6.3$) stars and 4) aperture masking interferometry (AMI) between 2.8 and 4.8 $\mu$m enabling high-contrast ($\sim10^{-3}-10^{-4}$) imaging at angular separations between 70 and 400 milliarcsec for relatively bright ($M<8$) sources. This paper presents an overview of the NIRISS instrument, its design, its scientific capabilities, and a summary of in-flight performance. NIRISS shows significantly better response shortward of $\sim2.5\,\mu$m resulting in 10-40% sensitivity improvement for broadband and low-resolution spectroscopy compared to pre-flight predictions. Two time-series observations performed during instrument commissioning in the SOSS mode yield very stable spectro-photometry performance within $\sim$10% of the expected noise. The first space-based companion detection of the tight binary star AB Dor AC through AMI was demonstrated.

We study the morphological properties of mid-infrared selected galaxies at $1.0

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. Lyman-alpha (Ly$\alpha$) emission from galaxies can be used to trace neutral hydrogen in the epoch of reionization, however, there is a degeneracy between the attenuation of Ly$\alpha$ in the intergalactic medium (IGM) and the line profile emitted from the galaxy. Large shifts of Ly$\alpha$ redward of systemic due to scattering in the interstellar medium can boost Ly$\alpha$ transmission in the IGM during reionization. The relationship between Ly$\alpha$ velocity offset from systemic and other galaxy properties is not well-established at high-redshift or low luminosities, due to the difficulty of observing emission lines which trace systemic redshift. Rest-frame optical spectroscopy with JWST/NIRSpec has opened a new window into understanding of Ly$\alpha$ at z>3. We present a sample of 12 UV-faint galaxies ($-20 \lesssim$ MUV $\lesssim -16$) at $3 \lesssim z \lesssim 6$, with Ly$\alpha$ velocity offsets, $\Delta v_{\mathrm{Ly}\alpha}$, measured from VLT/MUSE and JWST/NIRSpec from the GLASS-JWST Early Release Program. We find median $\Delta v_{\mathrm{Ly}\alpha}$ of 205 km s$^{-1}$ and standard deviation 75 km s$^{-1}$, compared to 320 and 170km s$^{-1}$ for MUV < -20 galaxies in the literature. Our new sample demonstrates the previously observed trend of decreasing Ly$\alpha$ velocity offset with decreasing UV luminosity and optical line velocity dispersion, extends to MUV $\gtrsim$ -20, consistent with a picture where the Ly$\alpha$ profile is shaped by gas close to the systemic redshift. Our results imply that during reionization Ly$\alpha$ from UV-faint galaxies will be preferentially attenuated, but that detecting Ly$\alpha$ with low $\Delta v_{\mathrm{Ly}\alpha}$ can be an indicator of large ionized bubbles., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We present a new high-precision, JWST-based, strong lensing model for the galaxy cluster Abell 2744 at $z=0.3072$. By combining the deep, high-resolution JWST imaging from the GLASS-JWST and UNCOVER programs and a Director's Discretionary Time program, with newly obtained VLT/MUSE data, we identify 32 multiple images from 11 background sources lensed by two external sub-clusters at distances of ~160" from the main cluster. The new MUSE observations enable the first spectroscopic confirmation of a multiple image system in the external clumps. Moreover, the re-analysis of the spectro-photometric archival and JWST data yields 27 additional multiple images in the main cluster. The new lens model is constrained by 149 multiple images ($\sim66\%$ more than in our previous Bergamini et al. 2023 model) covering an extended redshift range between 1.03 and 9.76. The subhalo mass component of the cluster includes 177 member galaxies down to $m_{\rm F160W}=21$, 163 of which are spectroscopically confirmed. Internal velocity dispersions are measured for 85 members. The new lens model is characterized by a remarkably low scatter between predicted and observed positions of the multiple images (0.43"). This precision is unprecedented given the large multiple image sample, the complexity of the cluster mass distribution, and the large modeled area. The improved accuracy and resolution of the cluster total mass distribution provides a robust magnification map over a $\sim\!45$ arcmin$^2$ area, which is critical for inferring the intrinsic physical properties of the highly magnified, high-$z$ sources. We combine JWST/NIRCam imaging and MUSE data to characterize the properties of galaxies in different environmental conditions in the cluster Abell2744 ($z=0.3064$) and in its immediate surroundings. We investigate how galaxy colors, morphology and star forming fractions depend on wavelength and on different parameterizations of environment. Our most striking result is the discovery of a ``red-excess'' population in F200W$-$F444W colors both in the cluster regions and the field. These galaxies have normal F115W$-$F150W colors, but are up to 0.8 mag redder than red sequence galaxies in F200W$-$F444W. They also have rather blue rest frame B$-$V colors. {Galaxies in the field and at the cluster virial radius are overall characterized by redder colors, but galaxies with the largest color deviations are found in the field and in the cluster core. Several results} suggest that mechanisms taking place in these regions might be more effective in producing these colors. Looking at their morphology, many cluster galaxies show signatures consistent with ram pressure stripping, while field galaxies have features resembling interactions and mergers. Our hypothesis is that these galaxies are characterized by dust enshrouded star formation: a JWST/NIRSpec spectrum for one of the galaxies is dominated by a strong PAH at 3.3$\mu m$, suggestive of dust obscured star formation. Larger spectroscopic samples are needed to understand if the color excess is due exclusively to dust-obscured star formation, and the role of environment in triggering it., Comment: ApJL in press

JWST observations confirm the existence of galaxies as early as 300Myr and at a higher number density than expected based on galaxy formation models and HST observations. Yet, sources confirmed spectroscopically in the first 500Myr have estimated stellar masses $<5\times10^8M_\odot$, limiting the signal to noise ratio (SNR) for investigating substructure. We present a high-resolution spectroscopic and spatially resolved study of a rare bright galaxy at $z=9.3127\pm0.0002$ with a stellar mass of $(2.5^{+0.7}_{-0.5})\times10^9M_\odot$, forming $25^{+3}_{-4}M_\odot/yr$ and with a metallicity of $\sim0.1Z_\odot$- lower than in the local universe for the stellar mass but in line with expectations of chemical enrichment in galaxies 1-2Gyr after the Big Bang. The system has a morphology typically associated to two interacting galaxies, with a two-component main clump of very young stars (age$<10$Myr) surrounded by an extended stellar population ($130\pm20$Myr old, identified by modeling the NIRSpec spectrum) and an elongated clumpy tidal tail. The spectroscopic observations identify O, Ne and H emission lines, and the Lyman break, where there is evidence of substantial Ly$\alpha$ absorption. The [OII] doublet is resolved spectrally, enabling an estimate of the electron number density and ionization parameter of the interstellar medium and showing higher densities and ionization than in lower redshift analogs. For the first time at $z>8$, we identify evidence of absorption lines (Si, C and Fe), with low confidence individual detections but SNR$>6$ when stacked. The absorption features suggest that Ly$\alpha$ is damped by the interstellar and circumgalactic medium. The abundance of carbon relative to oxygen (C/O) is a promising probe of star formation history in the early universe, as the ratio changes with time due to production of these elements by different nucleosynthesis pathways. We present a measurement of $\log{\mathrm{(C/O)}} = -1.01\pm0.12$ (stat) $\pm0.15$ (sys) in a $z=6.23$ galaxy observed as part of the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program. Notably, we achieve good precision thanks to the detection of the rest-frame ultraviolet O III], C III], and C IV emission lines delivered by JWST/NIRSpec. The C/O abundance is $\sim$0.8 dex lower than the solar value and is consistent with the expected yield from core-collapse supernovae, indicating that longer-lived intermediate mass stars have not fully contributed to carbon enrichment. This in turn implies rapid buildup of a young stellar population with age $\lesssim100$ Myr in a galaxy seen $\sim$900 million years after the Big Bang. Our chemical abundance analysis is consistent with spectral energy distribution modeling of JWST/NIRCam photometric data, which indicates a current stellar mass $\log\,\mathrm{M}_* / \mathrm{M_{sun}} = 8.4^{+0.4}_{-0.2}$ and specific star formation rate sSFR $\simeq 20$ Gyr$^{-1}$. We present images and a multi-wavelength photometric catalog based on all of the JWST NIRCam observations obtained to date in the region of the Abell 2744 galaxy cluster. These data come from three different programs, namely the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program, UNCOVER, and Director's Discretionary Time program 2756. The observed area in the NIRCam wide-band filters - covering the central and extended regions of the cluster, as well as new parallel fields - is 46.5 arcmin$^2$ in total. All images in eight bands (F090W, F115W, F150W, F200W, F277W, F356W, F410M, F444W) have been reduced adopting the latest calibration and reference files available. Data reduction has been performed using an augmented version of the official JWST pipeline, with improvements aimed at removing or mitigating defects in the raw images and improving the background subtraction and photometric accuracy. We obtain a F444W-detected multi-band catalog, including all NIRCam and available HST data, adopting forced aperture photometry on PSF-matched images. The catalog is intended to enable early scientific investigations and is optimized for the study of faint galaxies; it contains 24389 sources, with a 5$\sigma$ limiting magnitude in the F444W band ranging from 28.5 AB to 30.5 AB, as a result of the varying exposure times of the surveys that observed the field. We publicly release the reduced NIRCam images, associated multi-wavelength catalog and code adopted for $1/f$ noise removal with the aim of aiding users to familiarize themselves with JWST NIRCam data and identify suitable targets for follow-up observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. We present a search and characterization of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the Frontier Fields cluster Abell~2744 at $z=0.308$. We use JWST/NIRISS F200W observations, acquired as part of the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program, aiming to characterize morphologies of cluster UDGs and their diffuse stellar components. A total number of 22 UDGs are identified by our selection criteria using morphological parameters, down to stellar mass of $\sim10^{7}M_{\odot}$. The selected UDGs are systematically larger in effective radius in F200W than in HST/ACS F814W images, which implies that some of them would not have been identified as UDGs when selected at rest-frame optical wavelengths. In fact, we find that about one third of the UDGs were not previously identified based on the F814W data. We observe a flat distribution of the UDGs in the stellar mass-size plane, similar to what is found for cluster quiescent galaxies at comparable mass. Our pilot study using the new JWST F200W filter showcases the efficiency of searching UDGs at cosmological distances, with 1/30 of the exposure time of the previous deep observing campaign with HST. We report the detection of a high density of redshift $z\approx 10$ galaxies behind the foreground cluster Abell 2744, selected from imaging data obtained recently with NIRCam onboard {\it JWST} by three programs -- GLASS-JWST, UNCOVER, and DDT\#2756. To ensure robust estimates of the lensing magnification $\mu$, we use an improved version of our model that exploits the first epoch of NIRCam images and newly obtained MUSE spectra, and avoids regions with $\mu>5$ where the uncertainty may be higher. We detect seven bright $z\approx 10$ galaxies with demagnified rest-frame $-22 \lesssim M_{\rm UV}\lesssim -19$ mag, over an area of $\sim37$ sq. arcmin. Taking into account photometric incompleteness and the effects of lensing on luminosity and cosmological volume, we find that the density of $z\approx 10$ galaxies in the field is about $10\times$ ($3\times$) larger than the average at $M_{UV}\approx -21~ (-20)$ mag reported so far. The density is even higher when considering only the GLASS-JWST data, which are the deepest and the least affected by magnification and incompleteness. The GLASS-JWST field contains 5 out of 7 galaxies, distributed along an apparent filamentary structure of 2 Mpc in projected length, and includes a close pair of candidates with $M_{\rm UV}< -20$ mag having a projected separation of only 16 kpc. These findings suggest the presence of a $z\approx 10$ overdensity in the field. In addition to providing excellent targets for efficient spectroscopic follow-up observations, our study confirms the high density of bright galaxies observed in early {\it JWST} observations, but calls for multiple surveys along independent lines of sight to achieve an unbiased estimate of their average density and a first estimate of their clustering., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, 13 pages, 4 figures

The demographics of the production and escape of ionizing photons from UV-faint early galaxies is a key unknown in discovering the primary drivers of reionization. With the advent of JWST it is finally possible to observe the rest-frame optical nebular emission from individual sub-L$^*$ z>3 galaxies to measure the production of ionizing photons, $\xi_\mathrm{ion}$. Here we study a sample of 370 z~3-7 galaxies spanning -23 0.5) in our sample, based on their photometric properties, even amongst the Lyman-alpha selected galaxies. We present the spectroscopic confirmation of a protocluster at $z=7.88$ behind the galaxy cluster Abell2744 (hereafter A2744-z7p9OD). Using JWST NIRSpec, we find seven galaxies within a projected radius of 60kpc. Although the galaxies reside in an overdensity around $>20\times$ greater than a random volume, they do not show strong Lyman-alpha emission. We place 2-$\sigma$ upper limits on the rest-frame equivalent width $<16$-$28$AA. Based on the tight upper limits to the Lyman-alpha emission, we constrain the volume-averaged neutral fraction of hydrogen in the intergalactic medium to be $x_{\rm HI} > 0.45$ (68% CI). Using an empirical $M_{\rm UV}$-$M_{\rm halo}$ relation for individual galaxies, we estimate that the total halo mass of the system is $\gtrsim 4\times10^{11}\,M_\odot$. Likewise, the line of sight velocity dispersion is estimated to be $1100 \pm 200$km/s. Using an empirical relation, we estimate the present-day halo mass of A2744-z7p9OD to be $\sim2\times10^{15}\,M_\odot$, comparable to the Coma cluster. A2744-z7p9OD is the highest redshift spectroscopically confirmed protocluster to date, demonstrating the power of JWST to investigate the connection between dark-matter halo assembly and galaxy formation at very early times with medium-deep observations at $<20$hrs total exposure time. In the first billion years after the Big Bang, sources of ultraviolet (UV) photons are believed to have ionized intergalactic hydrogen, rendering the Universe transparent to UV radiation. Galaxies brighter than the characteristic luminosity $L^{*}$ do not provide enough ionizing photons to drive this cosmic reionization. Fainter galaxies are thought to dominate the photon budget; however they are surrounded by neutral gas that prevents the escape of the Lyman-$\alpha$ photons, which has been the dominant way to identify them so far. JD1 was previously identified as a triply-imaged galaxy with a magnification factor of 13 provided by the foreground cluster Abell 2744, and a photometric redshift of $z\sim10$. Here we report the spectroscopic confirmation of this very low luminosity ($\sim0.05 L^{*}$) galaxy at $z=9.79$, observed 480 Myr after the Big Bang, by means of the identification of the Lyman break and redward continuum, as well as multiple $\gtrsim4\sigma$ emission lines, with the Near-InfraRed Spectrograph (NIRSpec) and Near-InfraRed Camera (NIRCam) instruments. The combination of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and gravitational lensing shows that this ultra-faint galaxy ($M_{\rm UV}=-17.35$) -- with a luminosity typical of the sources responsible for cosmic reionization -- has a compact ($\sim$150 pc) and complex morphology, low stellar mass (10$^{7.19}$ M$_\odot$), and subsolar ($\sim$0.6 $Z_{\odot}$) gas-phase metallicity., Comment: Matched to the published Nature version of the article. 19 pages, 4 main figures, 1 supplementary figure, 1 supplementary tables. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has discovered a surprising abundance of bright galaxy candidates in the very early Universe ($< 500$ Myrs after the Big Bang), calling into question current galaxy formation models. Spectroscopy is needed to confirm the primeval nature of these candidates, as well as to understand how the first galaxies form stars and grow. Here we present deep spectroscopic and continuum ALMA observations towards GHZ2/GLASS-z12, one of the brightest and most robust candidates at $z > 10$ identified in the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program. We detect a $5.8 \sigma$ line, offset 0.5" from the JWST position of GHZ2/GLASS-z12 that, associating it with the [OIII] 88 micron transition, implies a spectroscopic redshift of $z = 12.117 \pm 0.001$. We verify the detection using extensive statistical tests. The oxygen line luminosity places GHZ2/GLASS-z12 above the [OIII]-SFR relation for metal-poor galaxies, implying an enhancement of [OIII] emission in this system while the JWST-observed emission is likely a lower-metallicity region. The lack of dust emission seen by these observations is consistent with the blue UV slope observed by JWST, which suggest little dust attenuation in galaxies at this early epoch. Further observations will unambiguously confirm the redshift and shed light on the origins of the wide and offset line and physical properties of this early galaxy. We present new observations of MRG-M2129, a quiescent galaxy at z = 2.15 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). With the combination of the gravitational lensing effect by the foreground cluster and the angular resolution provided by ALMA, our data reveal 1.2 mm continuum emission at $\sim130$ pc angular resolution. Compact dust continuum is detected at 7.9 $\sigma$ in the target but displaced from its stellar peak position by $62 \pm 38$ mas, or $\sim169 \pm 105$ pc in the source plane. We find considerably high dust-to-stellar mass ratio, $4 \times 10^{-4}$. From non-detection of the [C i] 3P2 -> 3P1 line, we then derive $3 \sigma$ upper limits on the molecular gas-to-dust mass ratio $\delta_\mathrm{GDR} < 60$ and the molecular gas-to-stellar mass ratio fH2 < 2.3%. The derived $\delta_\mathrm{GDR}$ is $>2\times$ smaller than the typical value assumed for quiescent galaxies in the literature. Our study supports that there exists a broad range of $\delta_\mathrm{GDR}$ and urges submillimeter follow-up observations of quenching/recently quenched galaxies at similar redshifts. Based on the derived low $\delta_\mathrm{GDR}$ and other observed dust properties, we argue that the central black hole is still active and regulates star formation in the system. The gravitationally lensed star WHL0137-LS, nicknamed Earendel, was identified with a photometric redshift $z_{phot} = 6.2 \pm 0.1$ based on images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. Here we present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) images of Earendel in 8 filters spanning 0.8--5.0$\mu$m. In these higher resolution images, Earendel remains a single unresolved point source on the lensing critical curve, increasing the lower limit on the lensing magnification to $\mu > 4000$ and restricting the source plane radius further to $r < 0.02$ pc, or $\sim 4000$ AU. These new observations strengthen the conclusion that Earendel is best explained by an individual star or multiple star system, and support the previous photometric redshift estimate. Fitting grids of stellar spectra to our photometry yields a stellar temperature of $T_{\mathrm{eff}} \simeq 13000$--16000 K assuming the light is dominated by a single star. The delensed bolometric luminosity in this case ranges from $\log(L) = 5.8$--6.6 $L_{\odot}$, which is in the range where one expects luminous blue variable stars. Follow-up observations, including JWST NIRSpec scheduled for late 2022, are needed to further unravel the nature of this object, which presents a unique opportunity to study massive stars in the first billion years of the universe., Comment: Accepted to ApJL. We present a rest-frame optical morphological analysis of galaxies observed with the NIRCam imager on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) as part of the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science program. We select 388 sources at redshifts \(0.8 < z < 5.4\) and use the seven 0.9--5\micron\ NIRCam filters to generate rest-frame $gri$ composite color images, and conduct visual morphological classification. Compared to HST-based work we find a higher incidence of disks and bulges than expected at $z>1.5$, revealed by rest frame optical imaging. We detect 123 clear disks (58 at $z>1.5$) of which 76 have bulges. No evolution of bulge fraction with redshift is evident: 61\% at \(z<2\) (\(N=110\)) versus 60\% at \(z\geq2\) (\(N=13\)). A stellar mass dependence is evident, with bulges visible in 80\% of all disk galaxies with mass \(> 10^{9.5}\, {\rm M}_{\odot}\) (\(N=41\)) but only 52\% at \(M < 10^{9.5}\, {\rm M}_{\odot}\) (\(N=82\)). We supplement visual morphologies with non-parametric measurements of Gini and Asymmetry coefficients in the rest-frame $i$-band. Our sources are more asymmetric than local galaxies, with slightly higher Gini values. When compared to high-z rest-frame ultraviolet measurements with Hubble Space Telescope, JWST shows more regular morphological types such as disks, bulges and spiral arms at $z>1.5$, with smoother (i.e. lower Gini) and more symmetrical light distributions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We use the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science NIRCam parallel observations to provide a first view of the UV continuum properties of NIRCam/F444W selected galaxies at 499% of the galaxies are blue star-forming galaxies with very low levels of dust (Avbeta~0.01+/-0.33). We find no statistically significant correlation for UV slope with redshift or UV magnitude. However, we find that in general galaxies at higher redshifts and fainter UV magnitudes have steeper UV slopes. We find a statistically significant correlation for UV slope with stellar mass, with galaxies with higher stellar mass showing shallower UV slopes. Individual fits to some of our galaxies reach the bluest UV slopes of beta~-3.1 allowed by stellar population models used in this analysis. Therefore, it is likely that stellar population models with higher amount of Lyman continuum leakage, AGN effects, and/or Population III contributions are required to accurately reproduce the rest-UV and optical properties of some of our bluest galaxies. This dust-free early view confirms that our current cosmological understanding of gradual mass + dust buildup of galaxies with cosmic time is largely accurate to describe the ~0.7-1.5 Gyr age window of the Universe. The abundance of a large population of UV faint dust-poor systems may point to a dominance of low-mass galaxies at z>6 playing a vital role in cosmic reionization., Comment: Accepted in ApJL

How passive galaxies form, and the physical mechanisms which prevent star formation over long timescales, are some of the most outstanding questions in understanding galaxy evolution. The properties of quiescent galaxies over cosmic time provide crucial information to identify the quenching mechanisms. Passive galaxies have been confirmed and studied out to $z\sim4$, but all of these studies have been limited to massive systems (mostly with $\log{(M_{\rm star}/M_{\odot})}>10.8$). Using James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRISS grism slitless spectroscopic data from the GLASS JWST ERS program, we present spectroscopic confirmation of two quiescent galaxies at $z_{\rm spec}=2.650^{+0.004}_{-0.006}$ and $z_{\rm spec}=2.433^{+0.032}_{-0.016}$ (3$\sigma$ errors) with stellar masses of $\log{(M_{\rm star}/M_{\odot})}=10.53^{+0.18}_{-0.06}$ and $\log{(M_{\rm star}/M_{\odot})}=9.93^{+0.06}_{-0.07}$ (corrected for magnification factors of $\mu=2.0$ and $\mu=2.1$, respectively). We report the first gas-phase metallicity map of a distant galaxy measured with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We use the NIRISS slitless spectroscopy acquired by the GLASS Early Release Science program to spatially resolve the rest-frame optical nebular emission lines in a gravitationally lensed galaxy at $z=3.06$ behind the Abell 2744 galaxy cluster. This galaxy (dubbed GLASS-Zgrad1) has stellar mass $\sim10^{8.6} M_\odot$, instantaneous star formation rate $\sim8.6$ $M_\odot$/yr (both corrected for lensing magnification), and global metallicity one-fourth solar. From its emission line maps ([O III], H$\beta$, H$\gamma$, [Ne III], and [O II]) we derive its spatial distribution of gas-phase metallicity using a well-established forward-modeling Bayesian inference method. The exquisite resolution and sensitivity of JWST/NIRISS, combined with lensing magnification, enable us to resolve this $z\sim3$ dwarf galaxy in $\gtrsim$50 resolution elements with sufficient signal, an analysis hitherto not possible. We find that the radial metallicity gradient of GLASS-Zgrad1 is strongly inverted (i.e. positive): $\Delta\log({\rm O/H})/\Delta r$ = $0.165\pm0.023$ $\mathrm{dex~kpc^{-1}}$. This inverted gradient may be due to tidal torques induced by a massive nearby ($\sim$15 kpc projected) galaxy, which can cause inflows of metal-poor gas into the central regions of GLASS-Zgrad1. These first results showcase the power of JWST wide-field slitless spectroscopic modes to resolve the mass assembly and chemical enrichment of low-mass galaxies in and beyond the peak epoch of cosmic star formation ($z\gtrsim2$). We present the reduced images and multi-wavelength catalog of the first JWST NIRCam extra-galactic observations from the GLASS Early Release Science Program, obtained as coordinated parallels of the NIRISS observations of the Abell 2744 cluster. Images in seven bands (F090W, F115W, F150W, F200W, F277W, F356W, F444W) have been reduced using an augmented version of the official JWST pipeline; we discuss the procedures adopted to remove or mitigate defects in the raw images. We obtain a multi--band catalog by means of forced aperture photometry on PSF-matched images at the position of F444W-detected sources. The catalog is intended to enable early scientific investigations, and it is optimized for faint galaxies; it contains 6368 sources, with limiting magnitude 29.7 at 5$\sigma$ in F444W. This paper highlights initial photometric analyses of JWST NIRCam imaging data in the sightline of SMACS0723, aiming to identify galaxies at redshift $z>7$. By applying a conservative Lyman-break selection followed by photometric redshift analysis and visual inspection, we identify four F090W-dropout and two F150W-dropout sources, three of which were recently confirmed in an independent spectroscopic analysis to $z=7.663$, 7.665, and 8.499. We then supplement our sample with a photometric-redshift selection, and identify five additional candidates at $710 galaxy candidates, 2. estimates of number densities, and 3. comparison of the final candidates to those in other studies, all of which were pointed out during the review process. We report the discovery of an extremely magnified star at redshift $z=2.65$ in James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRISS pre-imaging of the Abell 2744 galaxy-cluster field. The star's background host galaxy lies on a fold caustic of the foreground lens, and the cluster creates a pair of images of the region close to the lensed star. We identified the bright transient in one of the merging images at a distance of $\sim 0.15"$ from the critical curve, by subtracting the JWST F115W and F150W imaging from coadditions of archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) F105W and F125W images and F140W and F160W images, respectively. Since the time delay between the two images should be only hours, the transient must be the microlensing event of an individual star, as opposed to a luminous stellar explosion which would persist for days to months. Analysis of individual exposures suggests that the star's magnification is not changing rapidly during the observations. From photometry of the point source through the F115W, F150W, and F200W filters, we identify a strong Balmer break, and modeling allows us to constrain the star's temperature to be approximately 7,000--12,000 K., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, submitted to ApJL

We present the first search for $z\geqslant7$, continuum-confirmed sources with NIRISS/WFS spectroscopy over the Abell 2744 Frontier Fields cluster, as part of the GLASS-JWST ERS survey. With $\sim15$ hrs of pre-imaging and multi-angle grism exposures in the F115W, F150W, and F200W filters, we describe the general data handling (i.e., reduction, cleaning, modeling, and extraction processes) and analysis for the GLASS-JWST survey. We showcase the power of JWST to peer deep into reionization, when most intergalactic hydrogen is neutral, by confirming two galaxies at $z=8.04\pm0.15$ and $z=7.90\pm0.13$ by means of their Lyman breaks. Fainter continuum spectra are observed in both the F150W and F200W bands, indicative of blue ($-1.69$ and $-1.33$) UV slopes and moderately-bright absolute magnitudes ($-20.37$ and $-19.68$ mag). We do not detect strong Ly$\alpha$ in either galaxy, but do observe tentative ($\sim2.7-3.8\sigma$) HeII$\lambda$1640 A, OIII]$\lambda\lambda$1661,1666 A, and NIII]$\lambda\lambda$1747,1749 A line emission in one, suggestive of low metallicity, star-forming systems with possible non-thermal contributions. These novel observations provide a first look at the extraordinary potential of JWST/NIRISS for confirming representative samples of bright $z\geqslant7$ sources in the absence of strong emission lines, and gain unprecedented insight into their contributions towards cosmic reionization., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL on 1st September 2022, after minor modifications based on the referee report. 10 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We present the results of a first search for galaxy candidates at z$\sim$9--15 on deep seven-bands NIRCam imaging acquired as part of the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program on a flanking field of the Frontier Fields cluster A2744. Candidates are selected via two different renditions of the Lyman-break technique, isolating objects at z$\sim$9-11, and z$\sim$9-15, respectively, supplemented by photometric redshifts obtained with two independent codes. We find five color-selected candidates at z$>$9, plus one additional candidate with photometric redshift z$_{phot}\geq$9. In particular, we identify two bright candidates at $M_{UV}\simeq -21$ that are unambiguously placed at $z\simeq 10.6$ and $z\simeq 12.2$, respectively. The total number of galaxies discovered at $z>9$ is in line with the predictions of a non-evolving LF. The two bright ones at $z>10$ are unexpected given the survey volume, although cosmic variance and small number statistics limits general conclusions. This first search demonstrates the unique power of JWST to discover galaxies at the high redshift frontier. We study spatially resolved scaling relations among stars, dust, and gas in ten nearby spiral galaxies. In a preceding paper Abdurro'uf et al. (2022), we have derived spatially resolved properties of the stellar population and dust by panchromatic spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting using piXedfit. Now, we investigate resolved star formation ($\Sigma_{\rm H_{2}}$--$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$--$\Sigma_{*}$) and dust scaling relations. While the relations with all sub-galactic regions of the galaxies are reasonably tight ($\sigma \lesssim 0.3$ dex), we find that most of the scaling relations exhibit galaxy-to-galaxy variations in normalization and shape. Only two relations of $\Sigma_{\rm dust}$--$\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm dust}$--$\Sigma_{\rm H_{2}}$ do not show noticeable galaxy-to-galaxy variations among our sample galaxies. We further investigate correlations among the scaling relations. We find significant correlations among the normalization of the $\Sigma_{\rm H_{2}}$--$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$--$\Sigma_{*}$ relations, which suggest that galaxies with higher levels of resolved $\text{H}_{2}$ fraction ($f_{\rm H_{2}}$) tend to have higher levels of resolved star formation efficiency (SFE) and specific star formation rate (sSFR). We also observe that galaxies with higher levels of resolved dust-to-stellar mass ratios tend to have higher levels of resolved sSFR, SFE, and $f_{\rm H_{2}}$. Moreover, we find that galaxies with higher global sSFR and less compact morphology tend to have higher levels of the resolved sSFR, SFE, and $f_{\rm H_{2}}$, which can explain the variations in the normalization of the $\Sigma_{\rm H_{2}}$--$\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$--$\Sigma_{*}$ relationships. The distribution and properties of the first galaxies and quasars are critical pieces of the puzzle in understanding galaxy evolution and cosmic reionization. Previous studies have often excluded unresolved sources as potential low redshift interlopers. We combine broadband color and photometric redshift analysis with morphological selections to identify a robust sample of candidates consistent with unresolved point sources at redshift $z\sim8$ using deep Hubble Space Telescope images. We also examine G141 grism spectroscopic data to identify and eliminate dwarf star contaminants. From these analyses, we identify three, bright ($M_{UV}\lesssim-22$ ABmag) dropout point sources at $7.5

The 100% detection rate of Ly$\alpha$ emission in a sample of four luminous $z\sim8$ galaxies with red Spitzer/IRAC colors suggests objects with unusual ionizing capabilities that created early ionized bubbles in a neutral era. Whether such bubbles reflect enhanced ionizing properties (nature) or an overdense environment (nurture), however, remains unclear. Here we aim to distinguish between these hypotheses via a search for Ly$\alpha$ emission in five fainter galaxies drawn from the CANDELS-GOODS fields using a similar IRAC excess and UV magnitudes that should reflect reduced clustering effects. Using Keck/MOSFIRE we tentatively detect $>4\sigma$ line emission in only two targets at redshifts $z_{\rm Ly\alpha}$=7.1081 and $z_{\rm Ly\alpha}$=7.9622 with rest-frame EWs of 16-17 A, $\sim$1.5$\times$ weaker compared to their brighter counterparts. Thus we find a reduced rate for Ly$\alpha$ emission of $0.40^{+0.30}_{-0.25}$ compared to $1.00^{+0.00}_{-0.44}$ for more luminous examples. The lower rate agrees with predictions from simulations of a mostly neutral IGM and an intrinsic EW$_{0,\rm Ly\alpha}$ distribution for $z\sim6$ galaxies. However, even with an extreme EW$_{0,\rm Ly\alpha}$ model, it is challenging to match the detection rate for the luminous objects. SED-fitting of our fainter sample indicates young and star-forming systems, albeit with less extreme SFRs and ionization parameters compared to their luminous counterparts. The enhanced Ly$\alpha$ rate in luminous galaxies is thus likely a byproduct of both extreme ionizing properties as well as environment effects. We determine the bright end of the rest-frame UV luminosity function (UVLF) at $z=8-10$ by selecting bright $z\gtrsim 8$ photometric candidates from the largest systematic compilation of HST (pure-)parallel observations to date, the Super-Brightest-of-Reionizing-Galaxies (SuperBoRG) data set. The data set includes $\sim300$ independent sightlines from WFC3 observations, totalling $800-1300$ arcmin$^2$ (depending on redshift). We identify 31 $z\gtrsim8$ candidates via colour selection and photo-$z$ analysis with observed magnitude ($24.1< H_{160} <26.6$) and $1\sigma$ range probability of $58-95\%$ of being true high-z galaxies. Following detailed completeness and source recovery simulations, as well as modelling of interloper contamination, we derive rest-frame UVLFs at $z=8-10$ down to $M_{UV}\simeq-23$. We find that the bright end of the galaxy luminosity function can be described both by a Schechter and by a double power-law function, with our space-based large area determination showing some tentative discrepancies with the luminosity functions derived from ground-based observations at the same redshifts. We identify two possible explanations. The first is that the UVLF includes a substantial contribution from AGNs at magnitudes $M_{UV}<-22$. The UVLF we derive at $z=8$ is consistent with no evolution of the bright end from $z=6-7$ UVLFs that include AGNs. An alternative (and non-exclusive) possibility is that the dust content of the observed galaxies decreases with redshift, thereby countering the naturally expected decrease in the UV luminosity functions because of a decreased star formation rate with increasing redshift. We present the wide field slitless spectroscopy mode of the NIRISS instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope. This mode employs two orthogonal low-resolution (resolving power $\approx 150$) grisms in combination with a set of six blocking filters in the wavelength range 0.8 to $2.3\,\mu$m to provide a spectrum of almost every source across the field-of-view. When combined with the low background, high sensitivity and high spatial resolution afforded by the telescope, this mode will enable unprecedented studies of the structure and evolution of distant galaxies. We describe the performance of the as-built hardware relevant to this mode and expected imaging and spectroscopic sensitivity. We discuss operational and calibration procedures to obtain the highest quality data. Having accurate completeness functions is crucial to the determination of the rest-frame ultraviolet luminosity functions (UVLFs) all the way back to the epoch of reionization. Most studies use injection-recovery simulations to determine completeness functions. Although conceptually similar, published approaches have subtle but important differences in their definition of the completeness function. As a result, they implement different methods to determine the UVLFs. We discuss the advantages and limitations of existing methods using a set of mock observations, and then compare the methods when applied to the same set of Hubble Legacy Field (HLF) images. We find that the most robust method under all our mock observations is the one that defines completeness as a function of both input and output magnitude. Other methods considering completeness only as a function of either input or output magnitude may suffer limitations in a presence of photometric scatter and/or steep luminosity functions. In particular, when the flux scatter is >0.2 mag, the bias in the bright end of the UVLFs is on par with other systematic effects such as the lensing magnification bias. When tested on HLF images, all methods yield UVLFs that are consistent within 2 sigma confidence, suggesting that UVLF uncertainties in the literature are still dominated by small number statistics and cosmic variance.
