Search

We present a complete analysis of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data of GRB 221009A, the brightest Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) ever detected. The burst emission above 30 MeV detected by the LAT preceded by 1 s the low-energy (< 10 MeV) pulse that triggered the Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM), as has been observed in other GRBs. The prompt phase of GRB 221009A lasted a few hundred seconds. It was so bright that we identify a Bad Time Interval (BTI) of 64 seconds caused by the extremely high flux of hard X-rays and soft gamma rays, during which the event reconstruction efficiency was poor and the dead time fraction quite high. The late-time emission decayed as a power law, but the extrapolation of the late-time emission during the first 450 seconds suggests that the afterglow started during the prompt emission. We also found that high-energy events observed by the LAT are incompatible with synchrotron origin, and, during the prompt emission, are more likely related to an extra component identified as synchrotron self-Compton (SSC). A remarkable 400 GeV photon, detected by the LAT 33 ks after the GBM trigger and directionally consistent with the location of GRB 221009A, is hard to explain as a product of SSC or TeV electromagnetic cascades, and the process responsible for its origin is uncertain. We release fully reduced spectra obtained with NIRSpec onboard JWST as part of the GLASS-JWST Early Release Science Program and a follow-up Director's Discretionary Time program 2756. From these 263 spectra of 245 unique sources, acquired with low ($R =30-300$) and high dispersion ($R\sim2700$) gratings, we derive redshifts for 200 unique sources in the redshift range $z=0-10$. We describe the sample selection and characterize its high completeness as a function of redshift and apparent magnitude. Comparison with independent estimates based on different methods and instruments shows that the redshifts are accurate, with 80\% differing less than 0.005. We stack the GLASS-JWST spectra to produce the first high-resolution ($R \sim 2700$) JWST spectral template extending in the rest frame wavelength from 2000~\AA\ to 20, 000~\AA. We present new VLT/MUSE observations of the Hubble Frontier Field (HFF) galaxy cluster MACS J1149.5+2223, lensing the well-known supernova "Refsdal" into multiple images, which enabled the first cosmological applications with a strongly lensed supernova. Thanks to these data, targeting a northern region of the cluster and thus complementing our previous MUSE program on the cluster core, we release a new catalog containing 162 secure spectroscopic redshifts. We confirm 22 cluster members, which were previously only photometrically selected, and detect ten additional ones, resulting in a total of 308 secure members, of which 63% are spectroscopically confirmed. We further identify 17 new spectroscopic multiple images belonging to 6 different background sources. By exploiting MUSE data, in combination with the deep HFF images, we develop an improved total mass model of MACS J1149.5+2223. This model includes 308 total mass components for the member galaxies and requires four additional mass profiles, one of which is associated with a cluster galaxy overdensity identified in the North, representing the DM mass distribution on larger scales. The values of the resulting 34 free parameters are optimized based on the observed positions of 106 multiple images from 34 different families, that cover the redshift range between 1.240 and 5.983. Our final model has a multiple image position rms value of 0.39", which is well in agreement with that of other cluster lens models. With this refined mass model, we pave the way towards even better strong-lensing analyses that will exploit the deep and high resolution observations with HST and JWST on a pixel level in the region of the supernova Refsdal host. The recent discovery of a galaxy at z=7.3 with undetected optical emission lines and a blue UV to optical continuum ratio in JWST spectroscopy is surprising and needs to be explained physically. Here, we explore two possibilities that could cause such a seemingly quiescent ~5e8 $\rm M_\odot$ galaxy in the early Universe: (i) stochastic variations in the star formation history (SFH) and (ii) the effect of spatially varying dust attenuation on the measured line and continuum emission properties. Both scenarios can play at the same time to amplify the effect. A stochastic star formation model (similar to realistic SFHs from hydrodynamical simulations of similar-mass galaxies) can create such observed properties if star formation is fast-varying with a correlation time of <150 Myrs given a reasonable burst amplitude of ~0.6 dex. The total time spent in this state is less than 20 Myrs and the likelihood of such a state to occur over 500 Myrs at z=7 is ~50% (consistent with current observations). On the other hand, we show that a spectrum with blue UV continuum and lack of emission lines can be reproduced by a blue+red composite spectrum. The UV continuum is emitted from dust-free density bounded HII regions (blue component), while the red component is a dust-obscured starburst with weakened emission lines due to strong differential dust attenuation between stellar and nebular emission. The escape fraction of Lyman-continuum (LyC) photons ($f_{esc}$) is a key parameter for determining the sources of cosmic reionization at $z\geq 6$. At these redshifts, owing to the opacity of the intergalactic medium, the LyC emission cannot be measured directly. However, LyC leakers during the epoch of reionization could be identified using indirect indicators that have been extensively tested at low and intermediate redshifts. These include a high [OIII]/[OII] flux ratio, high star-formation surface density, and compact sizes. In this work, we present observations of 29 $4.5 \leq z \leq 8$ gravitationally lensed galaxies in the Abell 2744 cluster field. From a combined analysis of JWST-NIRSpec and NIRCam data, we accurately derived their physical and spectroscopic properties: our galaxies have low masses $(\log(M_\star)\sim 8.5)$, blue UV spectral slopes ($\beta \sim -2.1$), compact sizes ($r_e \sim 0.3-0.5$ kpc), and high [OIII]/[OII] flux ratios. We confirm that these properties are similar to those characterizing low-redshift LyC leakers. Indirectly inferring the fraction of escaping ionizing photons, we find that more than 80% of our galaxies have predicted $f_{esc}$ values larger than 0.05, indicating that they would be considered leakers. The average predicted $f_{esc}$ value of our sample is 0.12, suggesting that similar galaxies at $z\geq 6$ have provided a substantial contribution to cosmic reionization., Comment: Accepted for publication in the 4. JWST observations of high redshift galaxies are used to measure their star formation histories - the buildup of stellar mass in the earliest galaxies. Here we use a novel analysis program, SEDz*, to compare near-IR spectral energy distributions for galaxies with redshifts 5 < z < 7 to combinations of stellar population templates evolved from z = 12. We exploit NIRCam imaging in 7 wide bands covering 1-5 mu m, taken in the context of the GLASS-JWST-ERS program, and use SEDz* to solve for well-constrained star formation histories for 24 exemplary galaxies. In this first look we find a variety of histories, from long, continuous star formation over 5 < z < 12 to short but intense starbursts - sometimes repeating, and, most commonly, contiguous mass buildup lasting ~ 0.5 Myr,possibly the seeds of today's typical, M* galaxies., Comment: ApJL in press (accepted on October 30, 2022)

We present a first look at the reddest 2-5$\mu\rm m$ sources found in deep images from the GLASS Early Release Science program. We undertake a general search, i.e. not looking for any particular spectral signatures, for sources detected only in bands redder than reachable with the Hubble Space Telescope, and which would likely not have been identified in pre-JWST surveys. We search for sources down to AB $\sim 27$ (corresponding to $>10\sigma$ detection threshold) in any of the F200W to F444W filters,with a $>1$ magnitude excess relative to F090W to F150W bands. Fainter than F444W$>25$ we find 56 such sources of which 37 have reasonably constrained spectral energy distributions to which we can fit photometric redshifts. We find the majority of this population ($\sim$ 65%) as $2$2$\mu \rm m$ boosted by a combination of the Balmer break and emission lines. The typical implied rest equivalent widths are $\sim200\unicode{0x212B}$ with some extreme objects up to $\sim 1000\unicode{0x212B}$. This is in contrast with brighter magnitudes where the red sources tend to be $z<3$ quiescent galaxies and dusty star forming objects. Our general selection criteria for red sources allow us to independently identify other phenomena as diverse as extremely low mass ($\sim 10^8$ M$_\odot$) quiescent galaxies at $z<1$, recover recently identified $z>11$ galaxies and a very cool brown dwarf., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters. 11 pages, 3 figures. We investigate the blue and optical rest-frame sizes (lambda~2300A-4000A) of three compact star-forming regions in a galaxy at z=4 strongly lensed (x30, x45, x100) by the Hubble Frontier Field galaxy cluster A2744 using GLASS-ERS JWST/NIRISS imaging at 1.15um, 1.50mu and 2.0mu with PSF < 0.1". In particular, the Balmer break is probed in detail for all multiply-imaged sources of the system. With ages of a few tens of Myr, stellar masses in the range (0.7-4.0) x 10^6 Msun and optical/ultraviolet effective radii spanning the interval 3 < R_eff < 20 pc, such objects are currently the highest redshift (spectroscopically-confirmed) gravitationally-bound young massive star clusters (YMCs), with stellar mass surface densities resembling those of local globular clusters. Optical (4000A, JWST-based) and ultraviolet (1600A, HST-based) sizes are fully compatible. The contribution to the ultraviolet underlying continuum emission (1600A) is ~30%, which decreases by a factor of two in the optical for two of the YMCs (~4000A rest-frame), reflecting the young ages (<30 Myr) inferred from the SED fitting and supported by the presence of high-ionization lines secured with VLT/MUSE. Such bursty forming regions enhance the sSFR of the galaxy, which is ~10 Gyr^-1. This galaxy would be among the extreme analogs observed in the local Universe having high star formation rate surface density and high occurrence of massive stellar clusters in formation., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We present the serendipitous discovery of a late T-type brown dwarf candidate in JWST NIRCam observations of the Early Release Science Abell 2744 parallel field. The discovery was enabled by the sensitivity of JWST at 4~$\mu$m wavelengths and the panchromatic 0.9--4.5~$\mu$m coverage of the spectral energy distribution. The unresolved point source has magnitudes F115W = 27.95$\pm$0.15 and F444W = 25.84$\pm$0.01 (AB), and its F115W$-$F444W and F356W$-$F444W colors match those expected for other, known T dwarfs. We can exclude it as a reddened background star, high redshift quasar, or very high redshift galaxy. Comparison with stellar atmospheric models indicates a temperature of $T_{eff}$ $\approx$ 600~K and surface gravity $\log{g}$ $\approx$ 5, implying a mass of 0.03~M$_{\odot}$ and age of 5~Gyr. We estimate the distance of this candidate to be 570--720~pc in a direction perpendicular to the Galactic plane, making it a likely thick disk or halo brown dwarf. Star-forming galaxies can exhibit strong morphological differences between the rest-frame far-UV and optical, reflecting inhomogeneities in star-formation and dust attenuation. We exploit deep, high resolution NIRCAM 7-band observations to take a first look at the morphology of galaxies in the epoch of reionization ($z>7$), and its variation in the rest-frame wavelength range between Lyman $\alpha$ and 6000-4000\AA, at $z=7-12$. We find no dramatic variations in morphology with wavelength -- of the kind that would have overturned anything we have learned from the Hubble Space Telescope. No significant trends between morphology and wavelengths are detected using standard quantitative morphology statistics. We detect signatures of mergers/interactions in 4/19 galaxies. Our results are consistent with a scenario in which Lyman Break galaxies -- observed when the universe is only 400-800 Myrs old - are growing via a combination of rapid galaxy-scale star formation supplemented by accretion of star forming clumps and interactions., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, ApJL in press

Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS) provides a powerful tool for detecting strong line emission in star forming galaxies (SFGs) without the need for target pre-selection. As part of the GLASS-JWST-ERS program, we leverage the near-infrared wavelength capabilities of NIRISS ($1-2.2\mu$m) to observe rest-optical emission lines out to $\rm{z}\sim 3.4$, to a depth and with a spatial resolution higher than ever before (H$\alpha$ to z<2.4; [OIII]+H$\beta$ to z<3.4). In this letter we constrain the rest-frame [OIII]$\lambda5007$ equivalent width (EW) distribution for a sample of 76 $1<\rm{z}<3.4$ SFGs in the Abell 2744 Hubble Frontier Field and determine an abundance fraction of extreme emission line galaxies with EW$>750$A in our sample to be $12\%$. We determine a strong correlation between the measured H$\beta$ and [OIII]$\lambda5007$ EWs, supporting that the high [OIII]$\lambda5007$ EW objects require massive stars in young stellar populations to generate the high energy photons needed to doubly ionise oxygen. We extracted spectra for objects up to 2 mag fainter in the near-infrared than previous WFSS studies with the Hubble Space Telescope. We present the first rest-frame optical size-luminosity relation of galaxies at $z>7$, using the NIRCam imaging data obtained by the GLASS James Webb Space Telescope Early Release Science (GLASS-JWST-ERS) program, providing the deepest extragalactic data of the ERS campaign. Our sample consist of 19 photometrically selected bright galaxies with $m_\text{F444W}\leq27.8$ at $77$. Given the limited sample size and magnitude range, we first fix the slope to that observed for larger samples in rest-frame UV using HST samples. The median size $r_0$ at the reference luminosity $M=-21$ decreases slightly from rest-frame optical ($600\pm80$ pc) to UV ($450\pm130$ pc). We then re-fit the size-luminosity relation allowing the slope to vary. The slope is consistent with $\beta\sim0.2$ for all bands except F150W, where we find a marginally steeper slope of $\beta=0.53\pm0.15$. The steep UV slope is mainly driven by the smallest and faintest galaxies. If confirmed by larger samples, it implies that the UV size-luminosity relation breaks toward the faint end as suggested by lensing studies., Comment: Accepted by ApJL, 9 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

We exploit James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam observations from the GLASS-JWST-Early Release Science program to investigate galaxy stellar masses at z>7. We first show that JWST observations reduce the uncertainties on the stellar mass by a factor of at least 5-10, when compared with the highest quality data sets available to date. We then study the UV mass-to-light ratio, finding that galaxies exhibit a two orders of magnitude range of M/L_UV values for a given luminosity, indicative of a broad variety of physical conditions and star formation histories. As a consequence, previous estimates of the cosmic star stellar mass density - based on an average correlation between UV luminosity and stellar mass - can be biased by as much as a factor of ~6. Our first exploration demonstrates that JWST represents a new era in our understanding of stellar masses at z>7, and therefore of the growth of galaxies prior to cosmic reionization., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL. We present the first James Webb Space Telescope/NIRCam-led determination of $79.5$. Their star formation main sequence is consistent with predictions from simulations. Lastly, we introduce an analytical framework to constrain main-sequence evolution at $z>7$ based on galaxy ages and basic assumptions, through which we find results consistent with expectations from cosmological simulations. While this work only gives a glimpse of the properties of typical galaxies that are thought to drive the reionization of the universe, it clearly shows the potential of JWST to unveil unprecedented details on galaxy formation in the first billion years., Comment: Accepted by ApJL. 13 pages, 3 Figures

The GLASS James Webb Space Telescope Early Release Science (hereafter GLASS-JWST-ERS) Program will obtain and make publicly available the deepest extragalactic data of the ERS campaign. It is primarily designed to address two key science questions, namely, "what sources ionized the universe and when?" and "how do baryons cycle through galaxies?", while also enabling a broad variety of first look scientific investigations. In primary mode, it will obtain NIRISS and NIRSpec spectroscopy of galaxies lensed by the foreground Hubble Frontier Field cluster, Abell 2744. In parallel, it will use NIRCam to observe two fields that are offset from the cluster center, where lensing magnification is negligible, and which can thus be effectively considered blank fields. In order to prepare the community for access to this unprecedented data, we describe the scientific rationale, the survey design (including target selection and observational setups), and present pre-commissioning estimates of the expected sensitivity. 3C186, a radio-loud quasar at $z=1.0685$, was previously reported to have both velocity and spatial offsets from its host galaxy, and has been considered as a promising candidate for a gravitational wave recoiling black hole triggered by a black hole merger. Another possible scenario is that 3C186 is in an on-going galaxy merger, exhibiting a temporary displacement. In this study, we present analyses of new deep HST/WFC3-IR and ACS images, aiming to characterize the host galaxy and test this alternative scenario. We carefully measure the light-weighted center of the host and reveal a significant spatial offset from the quasar core ($11.1\pm0.1$kpc). The direction of the confirmed offset aligns almost perpendicularly to the radio jet. We do not find evidence of a recent merger, such as a young starburst in disturbed outskirts, but only marginal light concentration in F160W at $\sim30$kpc. The host consists of matured ($>200$Myr) stellar populations and one compact star-forming region. We compare with hydro-dynamical simulations and find that those observed features are consistently seen in late-stage merger remnants. Taken together, those pieces of evidence indicate that the system is not an on-going/young merger remnant, suggesting that the recoiling black hole scenario is still a plausible explanation for the puzzling nature of 3C186., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 14 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

3C186 is a powerful radio loud quasar (QSO) at the center of a cool-core cluster at z=1.06. Previous studies reported evidence for a projected spatial offset of ~1'' between the isophotal center of the galaxy and the point-source QSO as well as a spectral shift of ~2000 km/s between the narrow and broad line region of the system. In this work we report high-resolution molecular gas CO(4-3) observations of the system taken with NOEMA interferometer. We clearly detect a large reservoir of molecular gas, $M_{H_2}\sim8\times10^{10}~M_\odot$, that is cospatial with the host galaxy and likely associated with a rotating disk-like structure. We firmly confirm both the spatial offset of the galaxy's gas reservoir with respect to the continuum emission of the QSO and the spectral offset with respect to the redshift of the broad line region. Our morphological and kinematical analysis confirms that the most likely scenario to explain the 3C186 system is that the QSO is a kicked super-massive black hole (SMBH), which we believe may have resulted from a strong gravitational wave recoil as two SMBHs coalesced after the merger of their host galaxies., Comment: 9 pages, Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters in press

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 5 observations of a galaxy at $z=1.91$, GDS24569, in search of molecular gas in its vicinity via the [C I] $^3$P$_1$-$^3$P$_0$ line. GDS24569 is a massive ($\log M_*/M_\odot=11$) passively evolving galaxy, and characterized by compact morphology with an effective radius of $\sim0.5$ kpc. We apply two blind detection algorithms to the spectral data cubes, and find no promising detection in or around GDS24569 out to projected distance of $\sim320$ kpc, while a narrow tentative line ($4.1 \sigma$) is identified at $+1200$ km/s by one of the algorithms. From the non-detection of [C I], we place a $3\sigma$ upper limit on molecular hydrogen mass, $\sim 7.1 \times 10^9 M_\odot$, which converts to an extremely low gas-to-stellar mass fraction, $< 5 \%$. We conduct a spectral energy distribution modeling by including optical-to-far-infrared data, and find a considerably high ($\sim0.1\%$) dust-to-stellar mass ratio, $\sim10$-$100\times$ higher than those of local early-type galaxies. In combination with a previous result of an insufficient number of surrounding satellite galaxies, it is suggested that GDS24569 is unlikely to experience significant size evolution via satellite mergers. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has been providing tremendous survey efficiency via its pure-parallel mode, by observing another field in parallel with the primary instrument in operation for the primary observation. In this study, we present a new archival project, SuperBoRG, which aims at compiling data taken in extragalactic parallel programs of HST with WFC3 in the past decade; including pure-parallel (BoRG, HIPPIES, and COS-GTO) and coordinated-parallel (CLASH and RELICS) programs. The total effective area reaches $\sim0.41$deg$^2$ from 4.1Msec, or 47days, of observing time, which is the largest collection of optical-NIR imaging data of HST for extragalactic science. We reduce all data in a consistent manner with an updated version of our data reduction pipeline. When available, infrared imaging data from the Spitzer Space Telescope are included in photometric analyses. The dataset consists of 316 independent sightlines and is highly effective for identification of high-$z$ luminous sources ($M_\mathrm{UV}<-21$mag) at $z\sim7$ to $12$, helping to minimize the effects of cosmic variance. As a demonstration, we present three new $z>7$ source candidates, including one luminous galaxy candidate at $z_\mathrm{phot}\sim10.4$ with $M_\mathrm{UV}\sim-21.9$ mag; for this object the best-fit spectral energy distribution implies a large amount of stellar mass ($\log M_*/M_\odot \sim 10$) and moderate dust attenuation ($A_V \sim 1.4$mag), though the possibility of it being a low-$z$ interloper cannot completely be rejected ($\sim23\%$) with the current dataset. To extend the search for quasars in the epoch of reionization beyond the tip of the luminosity function, we explore point source candidates at redshift $z\sim8$ in SuperBoRG, a compilation of $\sim$0.4deg$^2$ archival medium-deep ($m_{\rm F160W}\sim 26.5$ABmag, 5$\sigma$) parallel IR images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Initial candidates are selected by using the Lyman-break technique. We then carefully analyze source morphology, and robustly identify 3 point sources at $z\sim8$. Photometric redshift analysis reveals that they are preferentially fit by extra-galactic templates, and we conclude that they are unlikely to be low-$z$ interlopers, including brown dwarfs. A clear IRAC ch2 flux excess is seen in one of the point sources, which is expected if the source has strong H$\beta$+[O III] emission with rest-frame equivalent width of $\sim3000$AA. Deep spectroscopic data taken with Keck/MOSFIRE, however, do not reveal Ly$\alpha$ emission from the object. In combination with the estimated H$\beta$+[O III] equivalent width, we place an upper limit on its Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction $f_{\rm esc, Ly\alpha}< 2 \%$. We estimate the number density of these point sources $\sim1\times10^{-6}$Mpc$^{-3}$mag$^{-1}$ at $M_{\rm UV}\sim-23$mag. The final interpretation of our results remains inconclusive: extrapolation from low-$z$ studies of $faint$ quasars suggests that $>100\times$ survey volume may be required to find one of this luminosity. Based on ALMA Band 3 observations of the CO(2-1) line transition, we report the discovery of three new gas-rich (M_H2 ~ 1.5-4.8 x 10^10 M_sun, SFRs in the range ~5-100 M_sun/yr) galaxies in an overdense region at z=1.7, that already contains eight spectroscopically confirmed members. This leads to a total of 11 confirmed overdensity members, within a projected distance of ~ 1.15 Mpc and in a redshift range of Dz = 0.012. Under simple assumptions, we estimate that the system has a total mass of >= 3-6 x 10^13 M_sun, and show that it will likely evolve into a >~ 10^14 M_sun cluster at z = 0. The overdensity includes a powerful Compton-thick Fanaroff-Riley type II (FRII) radio-galaxy, around which we discovered a large molecular gas reservoir (M_H2 ~ 2 x 10^11 M_sun). We fitted the FRII resolved CO emission with a 2-D Gaussian model with major (minor) axis of ~ 27 (~ 17) kpc, that is a factor of ~3 larger than the optical rest-frame emission. Under the assumption of a simple edge-on disk morphology, we find that the galaxy interstellar medium produces a column density towards the nucleus of ~ 5.5 x 10^23 cm^-2. Such a dense ISM may then contribute significantly to the total nuclear obscuration measured in the X-rays (N_(H,X) ~ 1.5 x 10^24 cm^-2) in addition to a small, pc-scale absorber around the central engine. The velocity map of this source unveils a rotational motion of the gas that is perpendicular to the radio-jets. The FRII is located at the center of the projected spatial distribution of the structure members, and its velocity offset from the peak of the redshift distribution is well within the structure's velocity dispersion. All this, coupled with the large amount of gas around the FRII, its stellar mass of ~ 3 x 10^11 M_sun, SFR of ~ 200-600 M_sun/yr, and powerful radio-to-X-ray emission, suggests that this source is the likely progenitor of the future brightest cluster galaxy., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. We present results from the KMOS Lens-Amplified Spectroscopic Survey (KLASS), an ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) large program using gravitational lensing to study the spatially resolved kinematics of 44 star-forming galaxies at 0.61), we find a weak increase or flat trend. We investigate the relation between the rest-frame UV clumpiness of galaxies and their global kinematic properties. We find no clear trend between the clumpiness and the velocity dispersion and $\upsilon_{rot}/\sigma_0$. This could suggest that the kinematic properties of galaxies evolve after the clumps formed in the galaxy disk or that the clumps can form in different physical conditions., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. A buncher cavity has been developed for the muons accelerated by a radio-frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ). The buncher cavity is designed for $\beta=v/c=0.04$ at an operational frequency of 324 MHz. It employs a double-gap structure operated in the TEM mode for the required effective voltage with compact dimensions, in order to account for the limited space of the experiment. The measured resonant frequency and unloaded quality factor are 323.95 MHz and $3.06\times10^3$, respectively. The buncher cavity was successfully operated for longitudinal bunch size measurement of the muons accelerated by the RFQ.

We present a catalogue of 22755 objects with slitless, optical, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectroscopy from the Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS). The data cover $\sim$220 sq. arcmin to 7-orbit ($\sim$10 ks) depth in 20 parallel pointings of the Advanced Camera for Survey's G800L grism. The fields are located 6' away from 10 massive galaxy clusters in the HFF and CLASH footprints. Thirteen of the fields have ancillary HST imaging from these or other programs to facilitate a large number of applications, from studying metal distributions at $z\sim0.5$, to quasars at $z\sim4$, to the star formation histories of hundreds of galaxies in between. The spectroscopic catalogue has a median redshift of $\langle z\rangle=0.6$ with a median uncertainty of $\Delta z / (1+z)\lesssim2\%$ at $\rm F814W\lesssim23$ AB. Robust continuum detections reach a magnitude fainter. The 5 $\sigma$ limiting line flux is $f_{\rm lim}\approx5\times10^{-17}\rm~erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}$ and half of all sources have 50% of pixels contaminated at $\lesssim$1%. All sources have 1- and 2-D spectra, line fluxes/uncertainties and identifications, redshift probability distributions, spectral models, and derived narrow-band emission line maps from the Grism Redshift and Line Analysis tool (GRIZLI). We provide other basic sample characterisations, show data examples, and describe sources and potential investigations of interest. Observations have revealed massive (logM*/Msun>11) galaxies that were already dead when the universe was only ~2 Gyr. Given the short time before these galaxies were quenched, their past histories and quenching mechanism(s) are of particular interest. In this paper, we study star formation histories (SFHs) of 24 massive galaxies at 1.6 50% of their extant masses by ~1.5 Gyr before the time of observed redshifts, with a trend where more massive galaxies form earlier. Their stellar-phase metallicities are already compatible with those of local early-type galaxies, with a median value of logZ*/Zsun=0.25 and scatter of ~0.15dex. In combination with the reconstructed SFHs, we reveal their rapid metallicity evolution from z~5.5 to ~2.2 at a rate of ~0.2dex/Gyr in log Z*/Zsun. Interestingly, the inferred stellar-phase metallicities are, when compared at half-mass time, ~0.25dex higher than observed gas-phase metallicities of star forming galaxies. While systematic uncertainties remain, this may imply that these quenched galaxies have continued low-level star formation, rather than abruptly terminating their star formation activity, and kept enhancing their metallicity until recently., Comment: Accepted version. We present a full data analysis of the pure-parallel Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging observations in the Brightest of Reionizing Galaxies Survey (BoRG[z9]) in Cycle 22. The medium-deep exposures with five HST/WFC3IR+UVIS filter bands from 79 independent sightlines (~370 arcmin^2) provide the least biased determination of number density for z>9 bright galaxies against cosmic variance. After a strict two-step selection for candidate galaxies, including dropout color and photometric redshift analyses, and revision of previous BoRG candidates, we identify one source at z~10 and two sources at z~9. The z~10 candidate shows evidence of line-of-sight lens magnification (mu~1.5), yet it appears surprisingly luminous (MUV ~ -22.6\pm0.3 mag), making it one of the brightest candidates at z > 8 known (~ 0.3 mag brighter than the z = 8.68 galaxy EGSY8p7, spectroscopically confirmed by Zitrin and collaborators). For z ~ 9 candidates, we include previous data points at fainter magnitudes and find that the data are well fitted by a Schechter luminosity function with alpha ~ -2.1, MUV ~ -21.5 mag, and log phi ~ -4.5 Mpc^-3mag^-1, for the first time without fixing any parameters. Muons have been accelerated by using a radio frequency accelerator for the first time. Negative muonium atoms (Mu$^-$), which are bound states of positive muons ($\mu^+$) and two electrons, are generated from $\mu^+$'s through the electron capture process in an aluminum degrader. The generated Mu$^-$'s are initially electrostatically accelerated and injected into a radio frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ). In the RFQ, the Mu$^-$'s are accelerated to 89 keV. The accelerated Mu$^-$'s are identified by momentum measurement and time of flight. This compact muon linac opens the door to various muon accelerator applications including particle physics measurements and the construction of a transmission muon microscope.

Local massive early-type galaxies are believed to have completed most of their star formation $\sim10$Gyr ago and evolved without having substantial star formation since. If so, their progenitors should have roughly solar stellar metallicities ($Z_*$), comparable to their values today. We report the discovery of two lensed massive ($\log M_*/M_\odot\sim11$), $z\sim2.2$ dead galaxies, that appear markedly metal deficient given this scenario. Using 17-band $HST$+$K_{s}$+$Spitzer$ photometry and deep $HST$ grism spectra from the GLASS and SN Refsdal follow-up campaigns covering features near $\lambda_{\rm rest}\sim4000$\AA, we find these systems to be dominated by A-type stars with $\log Z_*/Z_\odot=-0.40\pm0.02$ and $-0.49\pm0.03$ ($30$-$40\%$ solar) under standard assumptions. The second system's lower metallicity is robust to isochrone changes, though this choice can drive the first system's from $\log Z_*/Z_\odot=-0.6$ to 0.1. If these two galaxies are representative of larger samples, this finding suggests that evolutionary paths other than dry minor-merging are required for these massive galaxies. We report the discovery, spectroscopic confirmation and first lens models of the first two, strongly lensed quasars from a combined search in WISE and Gaia over the DES footprint. The four-image lensWGD2038-4008 (r.a.=20:38:02.65, dec.=-40:08:14.64) has source- and lens-redshifts $z_{s}=0.777 \pm 0.001$ and $z_l = 0.230 \pm 0.002$ respectively. Its deflector has effective radius $R_{\rm eff} \approx 3.4^{\prime\prime}$, stellar mass $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) = 11.64^{+0.20}_{-0.43}$, and shows extended isophotal shape variation. Simple lens models yield Einstein radii $R_{\rm E}=(1.30\pm0.04)^{\prime\prime},$ axis ratio $q=0.75\pm0.1$ (compatible with that of the starlight) and considerable shear-ellipticity degeneracies. The two-image lensWGD2021-4115 (r.a.=20:21:39.45, dec.=--41:15:57.11) has $z_{s}=1.390\pm0.001$ and $z_l = 0.335 \pm 0.002$, and Einstein radius $R_{\rm E} = (1.1\pm0.1)^{\prime\prime},$ but higher-resolution imaging is needed to accurately separate the deflector and faint quasar image. Modern data empower observers to describe galaxies as the spatially and biographically complex objects they are. We illustrate this through case studies of four, $z\sim1.3$ systems based on deep, spatially resolved, 17-band + G102 + G141 Hubble Space Telescope grism spectrophotometry. Using full spectrum rest-UV/-optical continuum fitting, we characterize these galaxies' observed $\sim$kpc-scale structures and star formation rates (SFRs) and reconstruct their history over the age of the universe. The sample's diversity---passive to vigorously starforming; stellar masses $\log M_*/M_\odot=10.5$ to $11.2$---enables us to draw spatio-temporal inferences relevant to key areas of parameter space (Milky Way- to super-Andromeda-mass progenitors). Specifically, we find signs that bulge mass-fractions ($B/T$) and SF history shapes/spatial uniformity are linked, such that higher $B/T$s correlate with "inside-out growth" and central specific SFRs that peaked above the global average for all starforming galaxies at that epoch. Conversely, the system with the lowest $B/T$ had a flat, spatially uniform SFH with normal peak activity. Both findings are consistent with models positing a feedback-driven connection between bulge formation and the switch from rising to falling SFRs ("quenching"). While sample size forces this conclusion to remain tentative, this work provides a proof-of-concept for future efforts to refine or refute it: JWST, WFIRST, and the 30-m class telescopes will routinely produce data amenable to this and more sophisticated analyses. We present gravitational lens models of the multiply imaged quasar DES J0408-5354, recently discovered in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) footprint, with the aim of interpreting its remarkable quad-like configuration. We first model the DES single-epoch $grizY$ images as a superposition of a lens galaxy and four point-like objects, obtaining spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and relative positions for the objects. Three of the point sources (A,B,D) have SEDs compatible with the discovery quasar spectra, while the faintest point-like image (G2/C) shows significant reddening and a `grey' dimming of $\approx0.8$mag. In order to understand the lens configuration, we fit different models to the relative positions of A,B,D. Models with just a single deflector predict a fourth image at the location of G2/C but considerably brighter and bluer. The addition of a small satellite galaxy ($R_{\rm E}\approx0.2$") in the lens plane near the position of G2/C suppresses the flux of the fourth image and can explain both the reddening and grey dimming. All models predict a main deflector with Einstein radius between $1.7"$ and $2.0",$ velocity dispersion $267-280$km/s and enclosed mass $\approx 6\times10^{11}M_{\odot},$ even though higher resolution imaging data are needed to break residual degeneracies in model parameters. The longest time-delay (B-A) is estimated as $\approx 85$ (resp. $\approx125$) days by models with (resp. without) a perturber near G2/C. The configuration and predicted time-delays of J0408-5354 make it an excellent target for follow-up aimed at understanding the source quasar host galaxy and substructure in the lens, and measuring cosmological parameters.
