Abstract

Soil microbial communities are known to be robust against perturbations such as nutrition inputs, which appears as an obstacle for the soil improvement. On the other hand, its adaptable aspect has been also reported. Here we propose simple measures for these seemingly contradicting features of soil microbial communities, robustness and plasticity, based on the distribution of the populations. The first measure is the similarity in the population balance, i.e. the shape of the distribution function, which is found to show resilience against the nutrition inputs. The other is the similarity in the composition of the species measured by the rank order of the population, which shows an adaptable response during the population balance is recovering. These results clearly show that the soil microbial system is robust (or, homeostatic) in its population balance, while the composition of the species is rather plastic and adaptable., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, with supplementary information

Abstract

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. 19. Spring-water temperature suggests widespread occurrence of Alpine permafrost in pseudo-relict rock glaciers

Abstract

Runoff originating from ground ice contained in rock glaciers represents a significant water supply for lowlands. Pseudo-relict rock glaciers contain patchy permafrost but appear to be relict, and therefore they can be misinterpreted when using standard classification approaches. The permafrost content, spatial distribution and frequency of this type of rock glacier are poorly known. Therefore, identifying pseudo-relict rock glaciers that might still contain permafrost, and potentially ice, is crucial for understanding their hydrological role in a climate change context. This work analyses rock–glacier spring-water temperature in a 795 km2 catchment in the eastern Italian Alps to understand how many rock glaciers classified as relict could have spring-water temperatures comparable to active or transitional rock glaciers as possible evidence of their pseudo-relict nature. Spring-water temperature, often auxiliary to other approaches for specific sites, was used for a preliminary estimate of the permafrost presence in 50 rock glaciers classified as relict. In addition, we present electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) results on two relict rock glaciers with opposing spring-water temperature and surface characteristics to constrain spring-water temperature results at the local scale. The results show that about 50 % of the rock glaciers classified as relict might be pseudo-relict, thus potentially containing permafrost. Both supposedly relict rock glaciers investigated by geophysics contain frozen sediments. The majority of the cold springs are mainly associated with rock glaciers with blocky and scarcely vegetated surfaces, but geophysics suggest that permafrost may also exist in rock glaciers below 2000 m a.s.l., entirely covered by vegetation and with a spring-water temperature of up to 3.7 °C. We estimate that pseudo-relict rock glaciers might contain a significant portion (20 %) of all the ice stored in the rock glaciers in the study area. These results highlight the relevance of pseudo-relict rock glaciers in periglacial environments. Even if not a conclusive method, spring-water temperature analyses can be used to preliminarily distinguish between relict and pseudo-relict rock glaciers in wide regions.

Abstract

In this study, we demonstrate the utility of available correlative measurements of carbon species to identify regional and local air mass characteristics as well as their associated source types. In particular, we combine different regression techniques and enhancement ratio algorithms with carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4) total column abundance from 11 sites of the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) to infer relative contributions of regional and local sources to each of these sites. The enhancement ratios provide a viable alternative to univariate measures of relationships between the trace gases that are insufficient in capturing source-type and transport signatures. Regional enhancements are estimated from the difference between bivariate regressions across a specific time window of observed total abundance of these species (BERr for bulk enhancement regression ratio) and inferred anomalies (AERr for anomaly enhancement regression ratio) associated with a site-specific background. Since BERr and AERr represent the bulk and local species enhancement ratio, respectively, its difference simply represents the site-specific regional component of these ratios. We can then compare these enhancements for CO2 and CH4 with CO to differentiate between combustion and non-combustion air masses. Our results show that while the regional and local influences in enhancements vary across sites, dominant characteristics are found to be consistent with previous studies over these sites and with bottom-up anthropogenic and fire emission inventories. The site in Pasadena shows a dominant local influence (> 60 %) across all species enhancement ratios, which appear to come from a mixture of biospheric and combustion activities. In contrast, Anmyeondo shows more regionally influenced (> 60 %) air masses associated with high-temperature and/or biofuel combustion activities. Ascension Island appears to only show a large regional influence (> 80 %) on CO / CO2 and CO / CH4, which is indicative of transported and combustion-related CO from the nearby African region, consistent with a sharp rise in column CO (3.51 ± 0.43 % ppb yr−1) at this site. These methods have important applications to source analysis using spaceborne column retrievals of these species.

Abstract

This case report shows unique aneurysm at the left ventricular apex associated with a double-chambered left ventricle (DCLV) in asymptomatic 69-year-old female. The aneurysm was located at the apex of an accessory chamber, which was formed by hypertrophied muscle band and the interventricular septum, along with a pronounced jet flow directed towards the apex aneurysm. These finding suggests that the obstruction at the base of the accessory chamber caused a pressure overload at the apex, ultimately leading to the development of the aneurysm. To best of our knowledge, this is the first case to prove the underlying cause of aneurysm formation in DCLV.

Abstract

We present the NVIDIA cuQuantum SDK, a state-of-the-art library of composable primitives for GPU-accelerated quantum circuit simulations. As the size of quantum devices continues to increase, making their classical simulation progressively more difficult, the availability of fast and scalable quantum circuit simulators becomes vital for quantum algorithm developers, as well as quantum hardware engineers focused on the validation and optimization of quantum devices. The cuQuantum SDK was created to accelerate and scale up quantum circuit simulators developed by the quantum information science community by enabling them to utilize efficient scalable software building blocks optimized for NVIDIA GPU platforms. The functional building blocks provided cover the needs of both state vector- and tensor network- based simulators, including approximate tensor network simulation methods based on matrix product state, projected entangled pair state, and other factorized tensor representations. By leveraging the enormous computing power of the latest NVIDIA GPU architectures, quantum circuit simulators that have adopted the cuQuantum SDK demonstrate significant acceleration, compared to CPU-only execution, for both the state vector and tensor network simulation methods. Furthermore, by utilizing the parallel primitives available in the cuQuantum SDK, one can easily transition to distributed GPU-accelerated platforms, including those furnished by cloud service providers and high-performance computing systems deployed by supercomputing centers, extending the scale of possible quantum circuit simulations. The rich capabilities provided by the SDK are conveniently made available via both Python and C application programming interfaces, where the former is directly targeting a broad Python quantum community and the latter allows tight integration with simulators written in any programming language., Comment: paper accepted at QCE 2023, journal reference will be updated whenever available

Abstract

Abstract Objectives Neurogenic muscle hypertrophy (NMH) is a rare condition characterized by focal muscle hypertrophy caused by chronic partial nervous injury. Given its infrequency, underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Inspired by two clinical cases, we conducted a systematic review to gain insights into the different aspects of NMH. Methods We systematically searched online databases up until May 30, 2023, for reports of muscle hypertrophy attributed to acquired neurogenic factors. We conducted an exploratory analysis to identify commonly associated features. We also report two representative clinical cases. Results Our search identified 63 reports, describing 93 NMH cases, to which we added our two cases. NMH predominantly affects patients with compressive radiculopathy (68.4%), negligible muscular weakness (93.3%), and a chronic increase in muscle bulk. A striking finding in most neurophysiological studies (60.0%) is profuse spontaneous discharges, often hindering the analysis of voluntary traces. Some patients exhibited features consistent with more significant muscle damage, including higher creatine phosphokinase levels, muscle pain, and inflammatory muscle infiltration. These patients are sometimes referred to in literature as “focal myositis.” Treatment encompassed corticosteroid, Botulinum Toxin A, decompressive surgery, antiepileptic medications, and nerve blocks, demonstrating varying degrees of efficacy. Botulinum Toxin A yielded the most favorable response in terms of reducing spontaneous discharges. Interpretation This systematic review aims to provide a clear description and categorization of this uncommon presentation of an often‐overlooked neurological disorder. Though questions remain about the underlying mechanism, evidence suggests that aberrant fiber overstimulation along with increased workload that promotes focal damage may result in muscle hypertrophy. This may serve as a guide for therapeutic interventions.

Abstract

During the 2020 austral summer, the pristine atmosphere of the southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) basin experienced significant perturbations. This study examines the variability of aerosols and carbon monoxide (CO) over this remote oceanic region and investigates the underlying processes in the upper troposphere–lower stratosphere (UT-LS). Aerosol profiles in January and February 2020 revealed a multi-layer structure in the tropical UT-LS. Numerical models – the FLEXible PARTicle dispersion model (FLEXPART) and the Modèle Isentropique de transport Mésoéchelle de l'Ozone Stratosphérique par Advection (MIMOSA) – indicated that the lower-stratospheric aerosol content was influenced by the intense and persistent stratospheric aerosol layer generated during the 2019–2020 extreme Australian bushfire events. A portion of this layer was transported eastward by prevailing easterly winds, leading to increased aerosol extinction profiles over Réunion on 27 and 28 January. Analysis of advected potential vorticity revealed isentropic transport of air masses containing Australian biomass burning aerosols from extratropical latitudes to Réunion at the 400 K isentropic level on 28 January. Interestingly, we found that biomass burning (BB) activity in eastern Africa, though weak during this season, significantly influenced (contributed up to 90 % of) the vertical distribution of CO and aerosols in the upper troposphere over the SWIO basin. Ground-based observations at Réunion confirmed the simultaneous presence of African and Australian aerosol layers. This study provides the first evidence of African BB emissions impacting the CO and aerosol distribution in the upper troposphere over the SWIO basin during the convective season.

Abstract

The increase in greenhouse gas concentrations, particularly CO2, has significant implications for global climate patterns and various aspects of human life. Spaceborne remote sensing satellites play a crucial role in high-resolution monitoring of atmospheric CO2. However, the next generation of greenhouse gas monitoring satellites is expected to face challenges, particularly in terms of computational efficiency in atmospheric CO2 retrieval and analysis. To address these challenges, this study focuses on improving the speed of retrieving the column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of carbon dioxide (XCO2) using spectral data from the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite while still maintaining retrieval accuracy. A novel approach based on neural network (NN) models is proposed to tackle the nonlinear inversion problems associated with XCO2 retrievals. The study employs a data-driven supervised learning method and explores two distinct training strategies. Firstly, training is conducted using experimental data obtained from the inversion of the operational optimization model, which is released as the OCO-2 satellite products. Secondly, training is performed using a simulated dataset generated by an accurate forward calculation model. The inversion performance and prediction performance of the machine learning model for XCO2 are compared, analyzed, and discussed for the observed region over east Asia. The results demonstrate that the model trained on simulated data accurately predicts XCO2 in the target area. Furthermore, when compared to OCO-2 satellite product data, the developed XCO2 retrieval model not only achieves rapid predictions ( ms) with good accuracy (1.8 ppm or approximately 0.45 %) but also effectively captures sudden increases in XCO2 plumes near industrial emission sources. The accuracy of the machine learning model retrieval results is validated against reliable data from Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) sites, demonstrating its ability to effectively capture CO2 seasonal variations and annual growth trends.

Abstract

Most blood cells derive from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), originating from endothelial cells. The induction of HSCs from endothelial cells occurs during mid-gestation, and research has revealed multiple steps in this induction process. Hemogenic endothelial cells emerge within the endothelium, transition to hematopoietic cells (pre-HSCs), and subsequently mature into functional HSCs. Reports indicate transcription factors and external signals are involved in these processes. In this review, we discuss the timing and role of these transcription factors and summarize the external signals that have demonstrated efficacy in an in vitro culture. A precise understanding of the signals at each step is expected to advance the development of methods for inducing HSCs from pluripotent stem cells.

Abstract

Abstract Pathological myopia (PM) is one of the leading causes of blindness, especially in Asia. To identify the genetic risk factors of PM, a two‐stage genome‐wide association study (GWAS) and replication analysis in East Asian populations is conducted. The analysis identified LILRB2 in 19q13.42 as a new candidate locus for PM. The increased protein expression of LILRB2/Pirb (mouse orthologous protein) in PM patients and myopia mouse models is validated. It is further revealed that the increase in LILRB2/Pirb promoted fatty acid synthesis and lipid accumulation, leading to the destruction of choroidal function and the development of PM. This study revealed the association between LILRB2 and PM, uncovering the molecular mechanism of lipid metabolism disorders leading to the pathogenesis of PM due to LILRB2 upregulation.

Abstract

Abstract Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2Z is caused by MORC2 mutations and presents with axonal neuropathy. MORC2 mutations can also manifest as developmental delay, impaired growth, dysmorphic facies, and axonal neuropathy (DIGFAN). We report a patient exhibiting an intermediate phenotype between these diseases associated with a novel MORC2 variant. A literature review revealed that the genotype‒phenotype correlation in MORC2-related disorders is complex and that the same mutation can cause a variety of phenotypes.

Abstract

Abstract Background Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a severe problem in women, and a well-balanced diet helps improve PMS symptoms. Eating disturbances are a major health problem in young women. Limited research has explored the correlation between eating behaviors and PMS symptoms in Japan. This study aimed to compare eating disturbances and the severity of PMS symptoms in college students. The questionnaire included basic information (age, height, and weight), PMS symptoms, and eating behaviors assessed using the Eating Attitudes Test 26. Results The proportion of those with PMS symptoms who were disturbed by PMS symptoms was significantly higher in the group with eating disturbance. Those who were affected by the physical symptoms of PMS had significantly higher scores on the subscales related to diet, bulimia and food preoccupation. Conclusion The results showed an association between PMS symptom severity and eating disturbance. The findings of this study indicate that individuals with eating disturbances may experience adverse effects on PMS symptoms, even in cases where weight is not at the extremes of excessive underweight or obesity.

Abstract

To fight climate change, it is crucial to have a precise knowledge of greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations in the atmosphere and to monitor sources and sinks of GHGs. On global scales, satellites are an appropriate monitoring tool. For the validation of the satellite measurements and to tie them to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) trace gas scale, ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) networks are used, which provide reference data. To ensure the highest-quality validation data, the network must be scaled to the WMO trace gas scale and have a very small site-to-site bias. Currently, the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) is the de facto standard FTIR network for providing reference data. Ensuring a small site-to-site bias is a major challenge for the TCCON. In this work, we describe the development and application of a new method to evaluate the site-to-site bias by using a remotely controlled portable FTIR spectrometer as a travel standard (TS) for evaluating the consistency of columnar GHG measurements performed at different TCCON stations, and we describe campaign results for the TCCON sites in Tsukuba (Japan), East Trout Lake (Canada) and Wollongong (Australia). The TS is based on a characterized portable EM27/SUN FTIR spectrometer equipped with an accurate pressure sensor which is operated in an automated enclosure. The EM27/SUN is the standard instrument of the Collaborative Carbon Column Observing Network (COCCON). The COCCON is designed such that all spectrometers are referenced to a common reference unit located in Karlsruhe, Germany. To evaluate the long-term stability of the TS instrument, it is placed side-by-side with the TCCON instrument in Karlsruhe (KA) and the COCCON reference unit (the EM27/SUN spectrometer SN37, which is operated permanently next to the TCCON-KA site) between deployments to collect comparing measurements. At each of the visited TCCON sites, the TCCON spectrometers collected low-resolution (LR) (0.5 cm−1) and high-resolution (HR) (0.02 cm−1) measurements in an alternating manner. Based on the TS as a portable standard, the measurements are compared to the Karlsruhe site as a common reference. For Tsukuba and Wollongong, the agreement with the reference in Karlsruhe found for XCO2 is on the 0.1 % level for both the LR and HR measurements. For XCH4, the agreement is at the 0.2 % level, with the low-resolution measurements showing a low bias at both sites and for both gases. For XCO, the deviations are up to 7 %. The reason for this is likely to be a known issue with the CO a priori profiles used by the TCCON over source regions. In East Trout Lake (ETL), the TCCON spectrometer broke down while the TS was en route to the station. Hence, no side-by-side comparison was possible there. An important auxiliary value for FTIR retrievals is the surface pressure. Using the pressure sensor in the TS, the surface pressure measurements at each site are also compared. The surface pressure analysis reveals excellent agreement (0.027, 0.135 and 0.094 hPa) for the Tsukuba, ETL and Wollongong sites.

Abstract

The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) measures column-average mole fractions of several greenhouse gases (GHGs), beginning in 2004, from over 30 current or past measurement sites around the world using solar absorption spectroscopy in the near-infrared (near-IR) region. TCCON GHG data have been used extensively for multiple purposes, including in studies of the carbon cycle and anthropogenic emissions, as well as to validate and improve observations from space-based sensors. Here, we describe an update to the retrieval algorithm used to process the TCCON near-IR solar spectra and to generate the associated data products. This version, called GGG2020, was initially released in April 2022. It includes updates and improvements to all steps of the retrieval, including but not limited to the conversion of the original interferograms into spectra, the spectroscopic information used in the column retrieval, post hoc air mass dependence correction, and scaling to align with the calibration scales of in situ GHG measurements. All TCCON data are available through https://tccondata.org/ (last access: 22 April 2024) and are hosted on CaltechDATA (https://data.caltech.edu/, last access: 22 April 2024). Each TCCON site has a unique DOI for its data record. An archive of all the sites' data is also available with the DOI https://doi.org/10.14291/TCCON.GGG2020 (Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) Team, 2022). The hosted files are updated approximately monthly, and TCCON sites are required to deliver data to the archive no later than 1 year after acquisition. Abstract

Much work has been done to study the behaviour of long-runout landslides and their associated longitudinal ridges, yet the origin of the hypermobility of such landslides and the formation mechanism of longitudinal ridges are poorly understood. As terrestrial long-runout landslides emplaced on glaciers commonly exhibit longitudinal ridges, the presence of these landforms has been used to infer the presence of ice on Mars, where hundreds of well-preserved long-runout landslides with longitudinal ridges are found. However, the presence of the same landforms in regions where extensive glaciations did not occur, for instance, on the Moon and in the Atacama region on Earth, suggests that ice is not the only factor influencing the formation of long-runout landslides with longitudinal ridges. Iceland is a unique region for its high spatial density of well-preserved long-runout landslides with longitudinal ridges. Here, we compiled the first catalogue of Icelandic long-runout landslides with longitudinal ridges, and we compared them with Martian long-runout landslides with longitudinal ridges of similar length. Moreover, we present detailed morphological observations of the Dalvík landslide deposit, in the Tröllaskagi peninsula, Iceland, and compare them with morphological observations of Martian landslides. Our results show that Icelandic long-runout landslides share key features with Martian analogue deposits, including splitting of longitudinal ridges and development of associated en echelon features. Therefore, Icelandic long-runout landslides with longitudinal ridges represent good morphological analogues of Martian long-runout landslides. Moreover, Iceland offers an opportunity to investigate the occurrence of these landforms at a regional scale, as well as their link with deglaciation following the Last Glacial Maximum, which could also provide insights into Martian palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental conditions.

Abstract

Abstract The Event‐based Vision Sensor (EVS) is a bio‐inspired sensor that captures detailed motions of objects, aiming to become the ‘eyes’ of machines like self‐driving cars. Compared to conventional frame‐based image sensors, the EVS has an extremely fast motion capture equivalent to 10,000‐fps even with standard optical settings, plus high dynamic ranges for brightness and also lower consumption of memory and energy. Here, we developed 22 characteristic features for analysing the motions of aquatic particles from the EVS raw data and tested the applicability of the EVS in analysing plankton behaviour. Laboratory cultures of six species of zooplankton and phytoplankton were observed, confirming species‐specific motion periodicities up to 41 Hz. We applied machine learning to automatically classify particles into four categories of zooplankton and passive particles, achieving an accuracy up to 86%. At the in situ deployment of the EVS at the bottom of Lake Biwa, several particles exhibiting distinct cumulative trajectory with periodicities in their motion (up to 16 Hz) were identified, suggesting that they were living organisms with rhythmic behaviour. We also used the EVS in the deep sea, observing particles with active motion and periodicities over 40 Hz. Our application of the EVS, especially focusing on its millisecond‐scale temporal resolution and wide dynamic range, provides a new avenue to investigate organismal behaviour characterised by rapid and periodical motions. The EVS will likely be applicable in the near future for the automated monitoring of plankton behaviour by edge computing on autonomous floats, as well as quantifying rapid cellular‐level activities under microscopy.

Introduction: Endothelial cells have a crucial function in transporting and exchanging various nutrients. O-GlcNAcylation, mediated by O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT), involves the addition of N-acetylglucosamine to proteins and serves as an intracellular nutrient sensing mechanism. However, the role of O-GlcNAcylation in endothelial cells remains poorly understood. Objective: This study investigated the role of O-GlcNAcylation in endothelial cells. Methods: Endothelial-cell-specific Ogt -knockout mice (Ogt-ECKO) were generated by crossing Ogt-floxed mice (Ogt-flox) with VE-Cadherin Cre ERT2 mice. Ogt-ECKO mice and Ogt-flox control mice were subjected to a normal or high-fat diet, and their body weight, glucose metabolism, and lipid metabolism were examined. Results: Ogt-ECKO mice exhibited reduced body weight compared with Ogt-flox control mice under a high-fat diet. Lipid absorption was significantly impaired in Ogt-ECKO mice. Changes in the intercellular junctions of small intestinal lacteal endothelial cells from a button-like to a zipper-like configuration were observed. Furthermore, Ogt-ECKO mice showed decreased expression of VEGFR3. The administration of a nitric oxide donor restored lipid absorption and reversed the morphological alterations in Ogt-ECKO mice. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate the critical role of O-GlcNAcylation in endothelial cells in lipid absorption in the intestine through the modulation of lacteal junction morphology. These results provide novel insight into the metabolic regulatory mechanisms under physiological conditions and have implications for the development of new therapeutic strategies for obesity.

Introduction: The treatment of nasal septum perforation solely by surgical intervention presents significant challenges. This study evaluated the effect of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in combination with collagen/gelatin on wound healing of nasal septum perforation in a rabbit animal model. Methods: A nasal septum perforation rabbit model was created. bFGF was added to a collagen/gelatin fixture and placed adjacent to the perforation, which is a complete defect. The rabbits were divided into three groups: the sham group that underwent the surgical procedure only, bFGF (−) group that received collagen/gelatin fixture without bFGF, and bFGF(+) group that received collagen/gelatin fixture with bFGF. The dimensions of the perforations were measured after 4 weeks, and the septum was subjected to histological examination. Results: All perforations remained open in the sham group (closure rate: 20.4%–83.1%). The closure rates of the bFGF(−) and bFGF(+) groups were 49.4%–68.8% and 72.7%–100%, respectively.
