Abstract

Head-mounted displays (HMDs) that use a see-through display method allow for superimposing computer-generated images upon a real-world view. Such devices, however, normally restrict the user's field of view. Furthermore, low display resolution and display curvature are suspected to make foveal as well as peripheral vision more difficult and may thus affect visual processing. In order to evaluate this assumption, we compared performance and eye-movement patterns in a visual search paradigm under different viewing conditions: participants either wore an HMD, had their field of view restricted by blinders or could avail themselves of an unrestricted field of view (normal viewing). From the head and eye-movement recordings we calculated the contribution of eye rotation to lateral shifts of attention. Results show that wearing an HMD leads to less eye rotation and requires more head movements than under blinders conditions and during normal viewing. #### Images

Abstract

There is an emerging concept, the validity of which remains to be proven, that preferential expression of selective adhesion molecules on particular T cell subsets may result in tissue-specific migration. L-selectin, cutaneous lymphocyte-associated Ag (CLA), and integrin alpha4beta7 are proposed to be involved in selective migration of T cell subsets into peripheral lymph nodes, skin, and gastrointestinal mucosa, respectively. Adult T cell leukemia (ATL) is associated with lymphoid infiltration of tissues and secondary lymphoid organs. To clarify the role of these putative homing molecules in vivo, we assessed their expression on circulating ATL cells from patients with lymph node, skin, and gut involvement. L-selectin expression was significantly higher on peripheral ATL cells in patients with lymphadenopathy than in patients without it. CLA was highly expressed on peripheral ATL cells compared with normal T cells: its expression was also significantly higher on peripheral ATL cells from patients with skin involvement compared with cells from patients without it. beta7 was particularly highly expressed on peripheral ATL cells from patients with gastrointestinal involvement. In summary, the differential expression of beta7 and beta1 on peripheral ATL cells correlates with the presence of gastrointestinal involvement. Similarly, the presence of skin involvement is associated with the expression of CLA(high)beta7low on peripheral ATL cells. These results, which are consistent with the molecules CLA and alpha4beta7 mediating preferential T cell migration to the skin and gastrointestinal mucosa, respectively, may allow for a refinement of the classification of lymphoid neoplasms on the basis of differential expression of homing molecules.

27. Beam transport experiment in JLA induction linac for a MM-meter wave FEL.

Abstract

An X-band FEL study with the beam energy of 2.0 MeV are undergoing now. In order to get a low beam emittance at the beam current of 1kA, the diode design of 1kA in JAERI Large current Accelerator Induction Linac is carried out by EGUN code. To avoid electric discharge on the upper part of wehnelt electrode, the diode chamber and the wehnelt radius are designed under the radial electric field Er of less than 180 kV/cm. The diode chamber size of a φ508 mm diameter and the wehnelt diameter of φ188 mm are decided. In the optimized diode design, the beam current of 1kA and the normalized emittance of 2.5×103 π mm-mR are obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The design and experimental results of a X-band relativistic high-power backward-wave oscillator driven by a 1 MV linear induction accelerator is presented. The design includes a linear numerical analysis and the simulations using the 2_-dimension electromagnetic particle-in-cell MAGIC code. Peak output power of about 210 MW was generated with frequency of 9.8 GHz and duration time of 50 ns. Abstract

The influence of underneath magnetization of Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets on surface domain configurations was investigated using a Kerr microscope by cutting the magnets at an angle to the c-axis. When the angle formed by the surface and the c-axis is larger than 30 degrees, the observed domain configurations change to maze patterns because of an increase in the demagnetizing field at the surface. In contrast, when the cutting angle is 10 degrees, residual magnetization increases with the applied field. It was found that at a cutting angle of 10 degrees, the underneath domain configurations can be indirectly observed through the surface by propagation of magnetic flux from the underneath grains.
