Abstract

The $\beta$-decay half-lives of 55 neutron-rich nuclei $^{134-139}$Sn, $^{134-142}$Sb, $^{137-144}$Te, $^{140-146}$I, $^{142-148}$Xe, $^{145-151}$Cs, $^{148-153}$Ba, $^{151-155}$La were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) employing the projectile fission fragments of $^{238}$U. The nuclear level structure, which relates to deformation, has a large effect on the half-lives. The impact of newly-measured half-lives on modeling the astrophysical origin of the heavy elements is studied in the context of $r$ process nucleosynthesis. For a wide variety of astrophysical conditions, including those in which fission recycling occurs, the half-lives have an important local impact on the second ($A$ $\approx$ 130) peak.

Abstract

We study for the first time the internal structure of 140Te through the beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy of 140Sb. The very neutron-rich 140Sb, Z = 51 and N = 89, ions were produced by the in-flight fission of 238U beam on a 9Be target at 345 MeV per nucleon at the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory, RIKEN. The half-life and spin-parity of 140Sb are reported as 124(30) ms and (4-), respectively. In addition to the excited states of 140Te produced by the beta-decay branch, the beta-delayed one-neutron and two-neutron emission branches were also established. By identifying the first 2+ and 4+ excited states of 140Te, we found that Te isotopes persist their vibrator character with E(4+)/E(2+) = 2. We discuss the distinctive features manifest in this region, such as valence neutron symmetry and asymmetry, revealed in pairs of isotopes with the same neutron holes and particles with respect to N = 82., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, EURICA campaign

Abstract

Objective: The optimal strategy for difficult-to-treat (D2T) rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has not been identified, and the ultrasound characteristics of D2T RA have not been reported. We investigated the clinical characteristics and factors contributing to the outcome in D2T RA in a multicentre RA ultrasound observational cohort. Method: We reviewed 307 Japanese patients diagnosed with RA who underwent treatment with biological and targeted synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (b/tsDMARDs). We compared the differences in patient characteristics between the D2T RA and non-D2T RA groups. We examined the factors contributing to a good response [defined as b/tsDMARD continuation and Clinical Disease Activity Index (CDAI) ≤ 10 at 12 months] in the D2T RA patient group. Results: Forty-three patients (14%) were categorized as D2T RA and the remaining 264 (86%) as non-D2T RA at baseline. The grey-scale (GS) score, disease duration, and CDAI at the initiation of treatment were significantly higher in the D2T RA group than in the non-D2T RA group. In contrast, the power Doppler (PD) score was not significantly different between the two groups. Of the 43 D2T RA patients, 20 achieved a good response. The introduction of CTLA4-Ig (n = 5) was significantly associated with a good response in analysis based on inverse probability weighting with propensity score. GS and PD scores at baseline were not significantly associated with therapeutic response at 12 months in D2T RA patients. Conclusions: Patients with D2T RA had high clinical and ultrasound activity and poor responses to treatment with b/tsDMARDs. Abstract

We report a new spin-injection effect found for a manganite using a specially fabricated sample. A wire of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 was patterned by means of focused ion beam etching, and the central part was subsequently irradiated with Ga+ ions lightly. The ferromagnetic Curie temperature was reduced locally by the irradiation from Tc to Tc', and thus a sequential ferromagnetic/paramagnetic/ferromagnetic structure was realized along the wire between Tc and Tc'. The injection of spin-polarized current from the ferromagnetic manganite into the paramagnetic part rendered the latter ferromagnetic and more conductive. This can be explained by assuming the suppression of spin fluctuation in the paramagnet by the injected spins., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

International audience; The β decay of Te90142 to I89142 was investigated for the first time. The parent nucleus was produced by the in-flight fission of a U238 beam with an energy of 345 MeV per nucleon, impinging on a Be9 target at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN. Excited states in I142 were established by β-delayed γ-ray spectroscopy. The observed (1+) states in I142 could be interpreted to be predominantly the ν0h9/2⊗π0h11/2 configuration formed by a Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron in the 0h9/2 orbital and a proton in the 0h11/2 orbital. Additional features of the (1+) states are discussed by comparing with neighboring heavier isotones, such as Cs144 and La146. In the context of deformed shell-model calculations, the (11+) state is closely related to the ν[5,3,2]3/2⊗π[5,5,0]1/2 configuration, which may be related to the weak Gamow-Teller transition strength.

Abstract

Structure of the neutron-rich N=86 isotope 140Xe, located northeast of a doubly-magic nucleus 132Sn, is investigated by β−γ spectroscopy. Two β-decay isomers in 140I are newly found in the study of two different β decays of 140I which were produced by two reactions (i) direct in-flight fission at a primary target and (ii) β decay of 140Te at an active stopper. Half-lives of the β decays of the ground state, the low-spin isomer, and the high-spin isomer are determined to be 0.38(2), 0.91(5), and 0.47(4) s, respectively. Decay schemes of the β decay of the high-spin isomer and of the mixed β decays of the ground state and the low-spin isomer in 140I to 140Xe are constructed using the information on γ-ray coincidence relation and γ-ray intensity. Nuclear structures of the low-lying states in 140Xe and 140I are discussed by comparing the experimental results to two theoretical calculations based on a large-scale shell model and the deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus deformed quasiparticle-random-phase approximation. Possible candidates for (quasi-)γ-band members of 2+ and 4+ states and the octupole collective 1− state are proposed in 140Xe. Increase of quadrupole, triaxial, and octupole collectivities is discussed with the increase of neutron and proton numbers.

Abstract

International audience; The β-decay scheme of Te138 and the level structure of I138 is reported for the first time. The experiment was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN, as one of the EUROBALL-RIKEN Cluster Array campaigns. Secondary radioactive ions, including Te138 and Sb138, were produced by the in-flight fission of a U238 beam with the energy of 345 MeV per nucleon. From the β decay of Te138, the level scheme of I138 was supplemented with new spin and parity assignments, such as the low-lying negative-parity states and a positive-parity 1+ state. This 1+ state can be interpreted as being associated with the π0h11/2⊗ν0h9/2 partner orbital configuration populated by the Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron in the 0h9/2 orbital and a proton in the 0h11/2 orbital. Details of the structure of I138 are discussed in terms of the proton-neutron interactions and Gamow-Teller transition strength within the theoretical context of shell-model calculations.

The β-decay scheme of 138Te and the level structure of 138I is reported for the first time. The experiment was performed at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN, as one of the EUROBALL-RIKEN Cluster Array campaigns. Secondary radioactive ions, including 138Te and 138Sb, were produced by the in-flight fission of a 238U beam with the energy of 345 MeV per nucleon. From the β decay of 138Te, the level scheme of 138I was supplemented with new spin and parity assignments, such as the low-lying negative-parity states and a positive-parity 1+ state. This 1+ state can be interpreted as being associated with the π0h11/2⊗ν0h9/2 partner orbital configuration populated by the Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron in the 0h9/2 orbital and a proton in the 0h11/2 orbital. Details of the structure of 138I are discussed in terms of the proton-neutron interactions and Gamow-Teller transition strength within the theoretical context of shell-model calculations.

Abstract

Newly observed decay schemes of the nuclei Sb-137 and Sb-138 are reported. The neutron-rich Sb isotopes were produced by the in-flight fragmentation of a U-238 primary beam with an energy of 345 MeV/nucleon. Several new excited states of Te-137 with tentatively assigned spin-parities of (5/2(-)), (9/2(-)), and (7/2) have been established which play an important role in the evolution of neutron levels beyond N = 82. The study of the beta decay of Sb-138 led to a considerable extension of the level scheme of Te-138 including the identification of several nonyrast states. The structure of Te-137 and Te-138 is discussed on the basis of large-scale shell-model calculations performed using two different effective interactions.

Abstract

The β-decay half-lives of 55 neutron-rich nuclei 134−139Sn, 134−142Sb, 137−144Te, 140−146I, 142−148Xe, 145−151Cs, 148−153Ba, and 151−155La were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory employing the projectile fission fragments of 238U. The nuclear level structure, which relates to deformation, has a large effect on the half-lives. The impact of newly measured half-lives on modeling the astrophysical origin of the heavy elements is studied in the context of r process nucleosynthesis. For a wide variety of astrophysical conditions, including those in which fission recycling occurs, the half-lives have an important local impact on the second (A ≈ 130) peak.

Abstract

The emergence of the vortex beam with orbital angular momentum (OAM) has provided intriguing possibilities to induce optical transitions beyond the framework of the electric dipole interaction. The uniqueness stems from the OAM transfer from light to material, as demonstrated in electronic transitions in atomic systems. In this study, we report on the OAM transfer to electrons in solid-state systems, which has been elusive to date. Using metamaterials (periodically textured metallic disks), we show that multipolar modes of the surface electromagnetic excitations (so-called spoof localized surface plasmons) are selectively induced by the terahertz vortex beam. Our results reveal selection rules governed by the conservation of the total angular momentum, which is confirmed by numerical simulations. The efficient transfer of light’s OAM to elementary excitations in solid-state systems at room temperature opens up new possibilities of OAM manipulation.
