Abstract

Morichetti The refractive index contrast plays a fundamental role in determining the characteristics of an optical dielectric waveguide and a higher index contrast permits to move towards larger scales of integration and to access new devices and functionalities. In this paper, the impact of the index contrast on the characteristics of dielectric waveguides such as single mode regime, losses, fibre to waveguide coupling efficiency, minimum bending radius, mode hybridness, birefringence, polarisation effects, repeatability and stability, scale of integration, realisable circuits, technological constraints and available materials are investigated. Both classical step index waveguides and multilayer structures that engineers the contrast are considered.

27th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 4496-4499, The economical sustainability and competitiveness of trackless stationary low concentration photovoltaic (LCPV) modules employing Silicon cells is discussed, as proceeding from detailed expressions for the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCoE). The model here introduced accounts for the performance of concentrating optics in terms of a newly defined yearly averaged effective optical performance ratio, Pro,eff. By comparing the LCoEs of standard and LCPV modules, threshold conditions for Pro,eff and for the cost of concentrating optics can be mapped, in dependence on the geometrical concentration, on the cell efficiency and on other sensitive design parameters. In view of competitiveness on the energy market, elevated Pro,eff has more economical relevance than either high geometrical gain or reduced cost of the optics. Results highlight that stationary LCPV is a viable approach to leverage the exploitation of high-efficiency Si cells on the PV market. We consider this to be a promising evolution strategy for Silicon-based PV modules.

27th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 142-145, We introduce and discuss the design of low-concentrating optics for trackless PV modules, to be coupled to highperformance silicon cells, to leverage their economical competitiveness. Aiming at high compatibility with standard installation infrastructures and high energy rating, the leading design rules are the minimization of the aspect ratio of the concentrator and the maximization of the optical collection efficiency for sunlight, whilst accounting for the daily and yearly evolution in the relative orientation of the PV module and the sun. A ray-tracing numerical simulator was used for the design. The result is a prismatic 2D concentrator unit, which features a geometrical gain G = 2 and more than 82% in yearly averaged effective optical performance ratio, if supposed operated in Southern Europe environment, comprising the contribution given by diffused light. The optimized aspect ratio of concentrating optics measures ~ 0.27. The prismatic shape of the concentrator can be slightly tuned, to address different orientation in the installation, without impairing the optical performance. The maximization of the effective optical performance ratio contributes to lower the Levelized Cost of Electricity for this solution, what supports the market sustainability of the present approach to trackless LCPV.

26th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 153-158, Stationary planar low concentration photovoltaics (LCPV) can potentially provide remarkable advantages in terms of cost reduction compared with fixed standard modules because of the reduction in the active material usage. However, the performances of state-of-the-art LCPV solutions are still too low to make them economically competitive in the market. In this work, the competitiveness of LCPV systems using silicon cells is evaluated by means of a model based on the Levelized Energy Cost (LEC). An effective efficiency parameter Pr,eff is introduced that quantifies the total energy production loss of a concentrated panel compared to a fixed standard panel. Two examples of LCPV solutions are presented and their optical performances are compared through an extensive numerical investigation. In the first case, a dielectric slab with mirrored walls and with a bottom diffusive surface is considered. In the second case, we present a modified design for a prism coupled compound parabola (MPCCP) that maximizes the annual energy production compared to known solutions reported in the literature. A first prototype of the MPCCP solution has been fabricated that confirms numerical simulations and demonstrates the viability of the MPCCP solution towards the realization of stationary planar LCPV modules using silicon cells.

Abstract

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are considered as the way to make photonic systems or subsystems cheap and ubiquitous. PICs still are several orders of magnitude more expensive than their microelectronic counterparts, which has restricted their application to a few niche markets. Recently, a novel approach in photonic integration is emerging which will reduce the R&D and prototyping costs and the throughput time of PICs by more than an order of magnitude. It will bring the application of PICs that integrate complex and advanced photonic functionality on a single chip within reach for a large number of small and larger companies and initiate a breakthrough in the application of Photonic ICs. The paper explains the concept of generic photonic integration technology using the technology developed by the COBRA research institute of TU Eindhoven as an example, and it describes the current status and prospects of generic InP-based integration technology

Abstract

A new class of integrated optical waveguide structures is presented, based on low cost CMOS compatible LPCVD processing. This technology allows for medium and high index contrast waveguides with very low channel attenuation. The geometry is basically formed by a rectangular cross-section silicon nitride $(Si_{3}N_{4})$ filled with and encapsulated by silicon dioxide $(SiO_{2})$. The birefringence and minimal bend radius of the waveguide is completely controlled by the geometry of the waveguide layer structures. Experiments on typical geometries will be presented, showing excellent characteristics (channel attenuation ≤0.06 dB/cm, IL ≤0.6 dB, PDL ≤0.2 dB, Bg «1 x $10^{-3}$, bend radius ≤500 μm).
