Core-collapse supernovae can be a copious source of sterile neutrinos, hypothetical particles that mix with active neutrinos. We develop two-dimensional stellar core-collapse models that incorporate the mixing between tau neutrinos and heavy sterile neutrinos -- those with the mass of 150--200 MeV -- to investigate signatures of sterile neutrinos in supernova observables. We find that the decay channel of a sterile neutrino into a pion and a tau neutrino can enhance the explosion energy and the synthesized nickel mass. Although the inclusion of sterile neutrinos considered in this study slightly reduce the neutrino and gravitational-wave signals, we find that they are still detectable for a Galactic event. Furthermore, we point out that if sterile neutrinos are as massive as ~200 MeV, they produce high-energy tau antineutrinos with energies of ~80 MeV, the detection of which can be a smoking signature of the sterile neutrinos and where Hyper-Kamiokande should play a pivotal role., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in PRD

Core-collapse supernovae are a useful laboratory to probe the nature of exotic particles. If axionlike particles (ALPs) are produced in supernovae, they can affect the transfer of energy and leave traces in observational signatures. In this work, we present results from two-dimensional supernova models including the effects of the production and the absorption of ALPs that couple with photons. It is found that the additional heating induced by ALPs can enhance the diagnostic energy of explosion, E_diag. For example, for moderate ALP-photon coupling, we find explosion energies ~0.6*10^51 erg compared to our reference model without ALPs of ~0.4*10^51 erg in the first ~0.5 s postbounce explored in this work. Our findings indicate that when the coupling constant is sufficiently high, the neutrino luminosities and mean energies are decreased because of the additional cooling of the proto-neutron star via ALPs. The gravitational wave amplitude is also reduced because the mass accretion on the proto-neutron star is suppressed. Although the ALP-photon coupling can foster explodability, including enhancing the explosion energy closer to recent observations, more long-term simulations in spatially three-dimension are needed to draw robust conclusions, Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PRD

Magnetars, neutron stars thought to be with ultra-strong magnetic fields of $10^{14 - 15}$ G, are observed to be much hotter than ordinary pulsars with $\sim 10^{12}$ G, and additional heating sources are required. One possibility is heating by the ambipolar diffusion in the stellar core. This scenario is examined by calculating the models using the relativistic thermal evolutionary code without making the isothermal approximation. The results show that this scenario can be consistent with most of the observed magnetar temperature data., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. It was recently proposed that exotic particles can trigger a new stellar instability which is analogous to the e-e+ pair instability if they are produced and reach equilibrium in the stellar plasma. In this study, we construct axion instability supernova (AISN) models caused by the new instability to predict their observational signatures. We focus on heavy axion-like particles (ALPs) with masses of ~400 keV--2 MeV and coupling with photons of g_{ag}~10^{-5} GeV^{-1}. It is found that the 56Ni mass and the explosion energy are significantly increased by ALPs for a fixed stellar mass. As a result, the peak times of the light curves of AISNe occur earlier than those of standard pair-instability supernovae by 10--20 days when the ALP mass is equal to the electron mass. Also, the event rate of AISNe is 1.7--2.6 times higher than that of pair-instability supernovae, depending on the high mass cutoff of the initial mass function., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report on the effects of strong magnetic fields on neutrino emission in the modified Urca process. We show that the effect of Landau levels on the various Urca pairs affects the neutrino emission spectrum and leads to an angular asymmetry in the neutrino emission. For low magnetic fields the Landau levels have almost no effect on the cooling. However, as the field strength increases, the electron chemical potential increases resulting in a lower density at which Urca pairs can exist. For intermediate field strength there is an interesting interference between the Landau level distribution and the Fermi distribution. For high enough field strength, the entire electron energy spectrum is eventually confined to single Landau level producing dramatic spikes in the emission spectrum.

Axion-like particles (ALPs) are a class of hypothetical pseudoscalar particles which feebly interact with ordinary matter. The hot plasma of core-collapse supernovae is a possible laboratory to explore physics beyond the standard model including ALPs. Once produced, some of the ALPs can be absorbed by the supernova matter and affect energy transfer. In this study, we calculate the ALP emission in core-collapse supernovae and the backreaction on supernova dynamics consistently. It is found that the stalled bounce shock can be revived if the coupling between ALPs and photons is as high as g_{ag}~10^{-9} GeV^{-1} and the ALP mass is 40-400 MeV. Most of the models result in more energetic explosions than the average observed supernova. While this can be used to place constraints on those ALPs, long-term simulations across multiple progenitors need to be further investigated to place robust limits., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in PRD

Context. Pulsational pair-instabilitye supernovae (PPISNe) and pair instability supernovae (PISNe) are the result of a thermonuclear runaway in the presence of a background electron-positron pair plasma. As such, their evolution and resultant black hole (BH) masses could possibly be affected by screening corrections due to the electron pair plasma. Aims. Sensitivity of PISNe and PPISNe to relativistic weak screening has been explored. Methods. In this paper a weak screening model that includes effects from relativistic pair production has been developed and applied at temperatures approaching and exceeding the thresh old for pair production. This screening model replaces "classical" screening commonly used in astrophysics. Modifications to the weak screening electron Debye length are incorporated in a computationally tractable analytic form with. Results. In PPISNe the BH masses were found to increase somewhat at high temperatures, though this increase is small. The BH collapse is also found to occur at earlier times, and the pulsational morphology also changes. In addition to the resultant BH mass, the sensitivity to the screening model of the pulsational period, the pulse structure, the PPISN-to-PISN transition, and the shift in the BH mass gap has been analyzed. We calculate the production of ultra-light axion-like particles (ALPs) in a nearby supernova progenitor. Once produced, ALPs escape from the star and a part of them is converted into photons during propagation in the Galactic magnetic field. It is found that the MeV photon flux that reaches Earth may be detectable by gamma ray telescopes for ALPs lighter than ~1 neV when Betelgeuse undergoes oxygen and silicon burning. The dependence of the gamma ray flux on the stellar mass is much smaller than the uncertainty that originates from the Galactic magnetic field. If ALPs are lighter than ~0.1 neV and the supernova progenitor is close enough to the Solar System, the gamma ray flux is insensitive to the distance d because the ALP-photon conversion probability is proportional to d^2. Axion-like particles (ALPs) are hypothetical bosons which may couple with photons. Since many ALPs can be emitted from hot and dense astrophysical plasma, nearby supernovae (SNe) are a possible probe into their properties including the ALP mass m_a and the coupling constant g_{ag} between ALPs and photons. I calculated ALP emission from a type Ia SN (SN Ia) model with the near-Chandrasekhar mass. It is found that the ALP luminosity from SNe Ia reaches ~10^43(g_{ag}/10^-10 GeV^-1)^2 erg s^-1 if m_a < 1 MeV. Heavy ALPs emitted from SNe are unstable and decay into photons. I predict the time delay and the flux of decay photons that reach Earth from a nearby SN Ia. It is found that the decay photons may provide a constraint on g_{ag} which is as stringent as an SN 1987A limit if an SN Ia is located 1 kpc away or closer and next-generation MeV gamma-ray satellites observe it ~1-10 years after the explosion., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in PASJ

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are believed to be a thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf, but the mass of their progenitors is still an open problem. In near-Chandrasekhar-mass (near-M_Ch) models of SNe Ia, the central density reaches >10^9 g cm^{-3}. The electron chemical potential becomes higher than the Q-values of electron capture (EC) transitions between fp-shell nuclei, so a portion of the available electrons is captured by iron group elements and thus neutron-rich isotopes are formed. Since EC reaction rates are sensitive to the density, the degree of neutronization is a key to distinguish near- and sub-M_Ch models. In order to compare observations and theoretical models, an accurate treatment of EC reactions is necessary. In previous theoretical works, however, effects of electron screening on ECs are ignored. Screening lowers EC rates and thus leads to a higher electron fraction. We implement electron screening on ECs to calculate explosive SN Ia nucleosynthesis in a near-M_Ch single degenerate model. It is found that some of neutron-rich nuclear abundances, namely those of 46,48Ca, 50Ti, 54Cr, 58Fe, 64Ni and 67,70Zn, decrease when screening effects on ECs are considered. Of these, 50Ti, 54Cr and 58Fe are particularly interesting because a significant portion of the solar abundance of these nuclei is presumed to originate from SNe Ia. We conclude that implementing the screening effect on ECs in modern SN Ia models is desirable to precisely calculate abundances of neutron-rich nuclides., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Since 7Li is easily destroyed in low temperatures, the surface lithium abundance decreases as stars evolve. This is supported by the lithium depletion observed in the atmosphere of most red giants. However, recent studies show that almost all of red clump stars have high lithium abundances A(Li)>-0.9, which are not predicted by the standard theory of the low-mass stellar evolution. In order to reconcile the discrepancy between the observations and the model, we consider additional energy loss channels which may come from physics beyond the Standard Model. A(Li) slightly increases near the tip of the red giant branch even in the standard model with thermohaline mixing because of the 7Be production by the Cameron-Fowler mechanism, but the resultant 7Li abundance is much lower than the observed values. We find that the production of 7Be becomes more active if there are additional energy loss channels, because themohaline mixing becomes more efficient and a heavier helium core is formed., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, accepted by MNRAS

For searching beyond Standard Model physics, stars are laboratories which complement terrestrial experiments. Massless neutrinos in the Standard Model of particle physics cannot have a magnetic moment, but massive neutrinos have a finite magnetic moment in the minimal extension of the Standard Model. Large extra dimensions are a possible solution of the hierarchy problem. Both of these provide additional energy loss channels in stellar interiors via the electromagnetic interaction and radiation into extra dimensions, respectively, and thus affect stellar evolution. We perform simulations of stellar evolution with such additional energy losses and find that they eliminate the blue loops in the evolution of intermediate-mass stars. The existence of Cepheid stars can be used to constrain the neutrino magnetic moment and large extra dimensions. In order for Cepheids to exist, the neutrino magnetic moment should be smaller than the range ~2x10^{-10} to 4x10^{-11}mu_B, where mu_B is the Bohr magneton, and the fundamental scale in the (4+2)-spacetime should be larger than ~2 to 5 TeV, depending on the rate of the ^{12}C(alpha, gamma)^{16}O reaction. The fundamental scale also has strong dependence on the metallicity. This value of the magnetic moment is in the range explored in the reactor experiments, but higher than the limit inferred from globular clusters. Similarly the fundamental scale value we constrain corresponds to a size of the compactified dimensions comparable to those explored in the torsion balance experiments, but is smaller than the limits inferred from collider experiments and low-mass stars., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Coulomb screening and weak interactions in a hot, magnetized plasma are investigated. Coulomb screening is evaluated in a relativistic thermal plasma in which electrons and positrons are in equilibrium. In addition to temperature effects, effects on weak screening from a strong external magnetic field are evaluated. In high fields, the electron transverse momentum components are quantized into Landau levels. The characteristic plasma screening length at high temperatures and at high magnetic fields is explored. In addition to changes to the screening length, changes in weak interaction rates are estimated. It is found that high fields can result in increased $\beta$-decay rates as the electron and positron spectra are dominated by Landau levels. Finally, the effects studied here are evaluated in a simple r-process model. It is found that relativistic Coulomb screening has a small effect on the final abundance distribution. While changes in weak interaction rates in strong magnetic fields can have an effect on the r-process evolution and abundance distribution, the field strength required to have a significant effect may be larger than what is currently thought to be typical of the r-process environment in collapsar jets or neutron star mergers. If r-process sites exist in fields $\gtrsim 10^{14}$ G effects from fields on weak decays could be significant., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures

Big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) has been used as a probe of beyond-standard physics in the early Universe, which includes a time-dependent quark mass m_q. We investigate effects of a quark mass variation delta m_q on the cross sections of the 7Be(n, p)7Li reaction and primordial light element abundances taking into account roles of 8Be resonances in the reaction during BBN. This resonant reaction has not been investigated although behaviors of low-lying resonances are not trivial. It is found that a resonance at the resonance energy E_r=0.33 MeV enhances the reaction rate and lowers the 7Li abundance significantly when the quark mass variation is negative. Based upon up-to-date observational limits on primordial abundances of D, 4He and Li, the quark mass variation in the BBN epoch are derived. In a model in which the resonance energies of the reactions 3He(d, p)4He and 3H(d, n)4He are insensitive to the quark mass, we find that the Li abundance can be consistent with observations for delta m_q/m_q = (4--8) times 10^{-3}., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, Supplemental material included

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are thought to be thermonuclear explosion of white dwarfs (WDs). Their progenitors are not well understood. One popular scenario is the double-degenerate (DD) scenario, which attributes SNe Ia to WD-WD binary mergers. The fates of the WD mergers depend on the rate of $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C reaction. Recently, the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C cross sections have been measured and the analysis of the data using the Trojan Horse Method suggested that the astrophysical reaction rate is larger than conventional rates at astrophysical temperatures due to possible resonances. The resonance contribution results in a decrease of the carbon burning ignition temperature. Therefore accretion induced collapse occurs more easily and increases the birthrate of Galactic neutron stars with the contribution of the DD scenario to the SNe Ia rate becoming even smaller., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

Observations of type Ia supernovae include information about the characteristic nucleosynthesis associated with these thermonuclear explosions. We consider observational constraints from iron-group elemental and isotopic ratios, to compare with various models obtained with the most-realistic recent treatment of electron captures. The nucleosynthesis is sensitive to the highest white-dwarf central densities. Hence, nucleosynthesis yields can distinguish high-density Chandrasekhar-mass models from lower-density burning models such as white-dwarf mergers. We discuss new results of post-processing nucleosynthesis for two spherical models (deflagration and/or delayed detonation models) based upon new electron capture rates. We also consider cylindrical and 3D explosion models (including deflagration, delayed-detonation, or a violent merger model). Although there are uncertainties in the observational constraints, we identify some trends in observations and the models. We make a new comparison of the models with elemental and isotopic ratios from five observed supernovae and three supernova remnants. We find that the models and data tend to fall into two groups. In one group low-density cores such as in a 3D merger model are slightly more consistent with the nucleosynthesis data, while the other group is slightly better identified with higher-density cores such as in single-degenerate 1D-3D deflagration models. Hence, we postulate that both types of environments appear to contribute nearly equally to observed SNIa. We also note that observational constraints on the yields of $^{54}$Cr and $^{54}$Fe, if available, might be used as a means to clarify the degree of geometrical symmetry of SNIa explosions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Recent experimental results have confirmed a possible reduction in the GT$_+$ strengths of pf-shell nuclei. These proton-rich nuclei are of relevance in the deflagration and explosive burning phases of Type Ia supernovae. While prior GT strengths result in nucleosynthesis predictions with a lower-than-expected electron fraction, a reduction in the GT$_+$ strength can result in an slightly increased electron fraction compared to previous shell model predictions, though the enhancement is not as large as previous enhancements in going from rates computed by Fuller, Fowler, and Newman based on an independent particle model. A shell model parametrization has been developed which more closely matches experimental GT strengths. The resultant electron-capture rates are used in nucleosynthesis calculations for carbon deflagration and explosion phases of Type Ia supernovae, and the final mass fractions are compared to those obtained using more commonly-used rates., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal
