International audience; While the exact technical processes employed in the construction of the pyramids are still a subject of ongoing debate, it is widely recognized that the Giza Plateau served as a hub where various trades converged with the common objective of building the necropolis. Of particular importance was the development of a local and sustainable food supply for the thousands of laborers involved in this monumental undertaking. Here, we explore the long-term behavioural mechanisms that led human societies to gradually colonize the Nile swamps at Giza. They developed herding and farming, paving the way for greater human exploitation of the area during the Dynastic Egypt. We show that transhumance tribes, originally from the Eastern Sahara, settled along the Giza Plateau 5200 years ago, primarilyengaging in herding and, more sporadically, agriculture. Giza was transformed into a pastoral landscape, with the development of large swaths of the floodplain, providing societies with permanent access to livestock produce (e.g. proteins, milk, meat and wool). Our palaeoecological data reveal that the initial complex societies at Giza were deeply rooted in transhumance, pastoralism and animal husbandry. These activities played a fundamental role in establishing the foundations of a robust and sustainable food system, while also serving as a crucial logistical support for the subsequent construction of the monumental structures that celebrated the grandeur of pharaonic Egypt.

Programme de l’année 2021-2022 : Géoarchéologie des ports antiques en Méditerranée. État de la question et pistes de recherche.

L’approche géomorphologique a porté sur le déplacement du niveau de la mer au cours des siècles, par confrontation avec les résultats des fouilles de la rive nord du Vieux‑Port. La faune, comme les coquillages, a fait l’objet d’une étude s’attachant surtout à retrouver les caractéristiques de l’alimentation, de l’époque médiévale à nos jours. Enfin, l’étude des insectes a permis d’aborder le domaine paléoenvironnemental révélant ainsi un milieu extrêmement anthropisé. A geo‑morphological study of changes in the sea level over the centuries was carried out using comparative data from excavations on the north shore of the Vieux Port. Fauna and shell material were analysed to determine characteristics of eating habits from medieval times to the present day. In addition, a study of insects from the area allowed researchers to explore the paleo‑environmental context and provide evidence for intensive human occupation. El estudio geomorfológico se centró en el desplazamiento del nivel del mar a través de los siglos y su comparación con los resultados de las excavaciones de la orilla norte del Vieux‑Port. La fauna, como los moluscos, fue objeto de un estudio dirigido principalmente al conocimiento de la alimentación desde épota medieval hasta hoy. Finalmente, el estudio de los insectos permitió tratar el ámbito paleoambiental revelando la existencia de un medio fuertemente antropizado. Lo studio geomorfologico ha interessato lo spostamento del livello del mare nel corso dei secoli, grazie al confronto con gli scavi della riva nord del Vieux‑Port. La fauna, corne i molluschi, è stata oggetto di uno studio finalizzato soprattutto a ritrovare le caratteristiche dlell’alimentazione dal medioevo ai giorni nostri. Infine lo studio degli insett ha permesso di approcciare il campo paleoambientale, rivelando un ambiente estremamente antropizzato.

Les récentes opérations d’archéologie préventive ont profondément renouvelé la connaissance du centre ancien de Marseille et des quartiers suburbains peu à peu intégrés à ta cité Ainsi les fouilles dont rend compte cet ouvrage, réalisées en 1992-1993 à proximité du Vieux Port et de la Canebière ont elles révélé quantité d’informations médites sur les aménagements du rivage depuis le IVe s av. J-C jusqu’à l’installation de salines au haut Moyen Âge. puis sur la mise en place du paysage périurbain au-delà de la fortification du Plan fourmiguier Liés à la fondation d‘édifices comme l’hôpital du Saint-Sépulcre, plusieurs flots constituent peu à peu le faubourg Sainte-Catherine, à caractère essentiellement agricole, qui est totalement rasé vers 1360 Intégré a la ville en 1670, cet espace se reconstruit au XVIIIe s après la création de la rue Paradis le nouvel flot est démoli au début du XIXe s pour la création de l’actuelle place du General-de-Gaulle, élément structurant de l’urbanisme moderne de Marseille. La reconstitution paléo-environnementale obtenue de l’étude bio-sédimentologique des carottages permet d’affirmer que Cumes (région napolitaine, Italie) possédait, grâce à la présence de la lagune de Licola au nord de la cité, un abri côtier susceptible d’être utilisé comme port protégé dès l’époque archaïque. Néanmoins ce dernier devait être difficile d’accès via un grau. La présence de barres d’avant côtes à fleur d’eau rendait l’accès au chenal relativement périlleux. De plus, la migration au cours des siècles de ce dernier a dû également poser un problème délicat d’accessibilité pour les navires. Il faut aussi signaler les problèmes de colmatage accélérée de la lagune et les fluctuations du plan d’eau qui ont dû entraîner une adaptation régulière des structures portuaires et des relocalisations des installations. Les dynamiques géomorphologiques de la région de Cumes expliquent la rapide suprématie des ports proches mais moins contraignants comme Pouzzoles ou Misène aux dépens du médiocre abri côtier de Cumes-Licola. L’importance du bassin lagunaire de Cumes-Licola ne fit donc que décroître au fil des siècles jusqu’à disparaître, entièrement colmaté. À l’époque moderne seules de petites barques de pèche pouvaient encore circuler. The bio-sedimentological study and paleo-environmental reconstruction of core samples confirm that Cumae, located in the Neapolitan region of Italy, had a coastal shelter inside Licola lagoon to the north of the city. This shelter was likely used as a harbour basin from the archaic period, although it was difficult to access due to a narrow channel and foreshore bars that made navigation perilous. Over the centuries, the channel's migration posed an ongoing challenge for accessibility. In addition, the lagoon suffered from accelerated clogging and fluctuating water levels, which necessitated the regular adaptation of port structures and installation relocation. The geomorphological dynamics of the Cumae region explain why nearby ports such as Pozzuoli, Miseno, and Portus Iulius, which were less restrictive and more easily accessible, quickly gained prominence at the expense of Cumae-Licola's poor coastal shelter. As a result, the importance of Cumae-Licola's lagoon basin decreased over time, ultimately disappearing. In modern times, only small fishing boats could navigate inside the area.
