Suicidality affects millions of people in the United States every year. Despite its pervasiveness, suicidality often impacts minoritized communities disproportionately. For example, Black communities, with historically low suicidality rates, have experienced significant increases in deaths by suicide in the last two decades. Such increases have occurred in unique and complex individual and contextual relationships such as historical trauma, racialized ecological injustices, structural and institutional racism, resource-deprived communities, forced family separation through over-incarceration, interpersonal discrimination, and internalized shame. While traditional psychiatric, psychological, and public health approaches have undoubtedly prevented some suicides, these fields of study often overlook or obscure the interconnections between upstream, oppressive systemic dynamics and downstream, individual-level factors that uniquely contribute to suicidality in Black communities. To address these oversights and limitations, and to re-imagine human services professionals’ suicide screening, assessment, and intervention with Black communities, The Individual-in-Contexts Model (ICM) is offered. This model integrates critical, ecological, contextual, and Black feminist scholarship frameworks, and provides rationale for specific human services research, practice, and policy recommendations.

Abstract Background Protein carbamylation, a post-translational protein modification primarily driven by urea, independently associates with adverse clinical outcomes in patients with CKD. Biomarkers used to quantify carbamylation burden have mainly included carbamylated albumin (C-Alb) and homocitrulline (HCit, carbamylated lysine). In this study, we aimed to compare the prognostic utility of these two markers in order to facilitate comparisons of existing studies employing either marker alone, and to inform future carbamylation studies. Methods Both serum C-Alb and free HCit levels were assayed from the same timepoint in 1632 individuals with CKD stages 2–4 enrolled in the prospective Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) study. Adjusted Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess risks for the outcomes of death (primary) and end stage kidney disease (ESKD) using each marker. C-statistics, net reclassification improvement, and integrated discrimination improvement were used to compare the prognostic value of each marker. Results Participant demographics included mean (SD) age 59 (11) years; 702 (43%) females; 700 (43%) white. C-Alb and HCit levels were positively correlated with one another (Pearson correlation coefficient 0.64). Higher C-Alb and HCit levels showed similar increased risk of death (e.g., the adjusted hazard ratio [HR] for death in the 4th carbamylation quartile compared to the 1st was 1.90 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.35–2.66) for C-Alb, and 1.89 [1.27–2.81] for HCit; and on a continuous scale, the adjusted HR for death using C-Alb was 1.24 [1.11 to 1.39] per standard deviation increase, and 1.27 [1.10–1.46] using HCit). Both biomarkers also had similar HRs for ESKD. The C-statistics were similar when adding each carbamylation biomarker to base models (e.g., for mortality models, the C-statistic was 0.725 [0.707–0.743] with C-Alb and 0.725 [0.707–0.743] with HCit, both compared to a base model 0.723). Similarities were also observed for the net reclassification improvement and integrated discrimination improvement metrics. Conclusions C-Alb and HCit had similar performance across multiple prognostic assessments. The markers appear readily comparable in CKD epidemiological studies.

We report the generation of a gene-edited human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line from an Alzheimer’s disease patient-derived iPSC line harbouring the PSEN1 H163R mutation. This line demonstrates pluripotent stem cell morphology, expression of pluripotency markers, and maintains a normal karyotype.

Summary: The emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Alpha variant in 2020 demonstrated the need for reanalysis of diagnostic tests to ensure detection of emerging variants. Here, we present a protocol for creating and characterizing SARS-CoV-2 variant testing panels using remnant clinical samples for diagnostic assay testing. We describe steps for characterizing SARS-CoV-2 remnant clinical samples and preparing them into pools and their use in preparing varying quantities of virus. Limited data highlight the need to understand differences in SARS-CoV-2 omicron (B.1.1.529) variant viral load between the gold standard nasopharyngeal (NP) swab, mid-turbinate (MT)/anterior nasal swabs, oropharyngeal (OP) swabs, and saliva. MT, OP, and saliva samples from symptomatic individuals in Atlanta, GA, in January 2022 and longitudinal samples from a small familial cohort were tested by both RT-PCR and ultrasensitive antigen assays. Higher concentrations in the nares were observed in the familial cohort, but a dominant sample type was not found among 39 cases in the cross-sectional cohort. The composite of positive MT or OP assay for both RT-PCR and antigen assay trended toward higher diagnostic yield but did not achieve significant difference. Our data did not identify a singular preferred sample type for SARS-CoV-2 testing, but higher levels of saliva nucleocapsid, a trend toward higher yield of composite OP/MT result, and association of apparent MT or OP predominance with symptoms warrant further study.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects nearly 40% of adults with diabetes. Our objective is to assess trends in risk factor control and use of 2022 ADA and KDIGO guideline-recommended medications. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Using data from 1988 to 2020 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we will examine trends in sociodemographic risk factors and glycemic, blood pressure, and lipid control among adults with CKD and diabetes. BackgroundThe physical, paper-based Georgia TB Reference Guide has served as the clinical reference handbook on tuberculosis (TB) diagnostic and treatment guidelines for the state of Georgia in the United States. Supported by the Georgia Department of Public Health, the production of the 112-page palm-sized booklet was previously led by a team of Georgia-based TB experts at Emory University and printed every three-five years with updates to clinical management guidelines and TB consult contact information. However, the costs associated with editorial printing combined with delays in updating a static printed booklet with revised guidance hampered the utility of the tool. Considering the barriers with paper-based production and based on the beneficial use of apps to support the dissemination of clinical management guidance in other settings, the booklet was converted into a mobile application. This paper describes the process of developing a mobile app version of the Georgia TB Reference Guide in an easy-to-update and readily available format.MethodsWe employed a user-centered design approach to develop the app, including a series of qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys. Participants included a mix of state officials and local TB experts. First, initial foundational interviews were conducted to conceptualize current utilization practices of both the paper and PDF versions of the tool. Second, the findings from the initial interviews were organized thematically and informed the design of the app, which was then beta tested by a round of previously unsampled TB experts as well as a re-sample from the initial interviews. Third, the designs were coded into developmental phases and beta tested among users of the current Georgia TB Reference Guide. Fourth, the app was published and downloaded by a pre-selected group of local users who provided answers to a follow-up survey after using the app for one month. Fifth, user growth, self-reported demographics, and app usage between February and July 2022 were recorded through automatic data metrics built into the app.ResultsThe paper copy Georgia TB Reference Guide usage themes included commonly referenced content, navigation paths, and desired features and content. The themes were converted into features and designs such as prioritizing commonly reviewed topics and guide customization with bookmarks and notes. Iterations of the designs were driven by feedback from TB experts and included home page featured content, improving content readability, and improving the search feature. The follow-up survey revealed a 90% preference for the app over the paper version of the guide. In the six months following the app's release, the app was downloaded by 281 individuals in the United States. The majority of downloads were in Georgia and the app also expanded organically to 19 other states.ConclusionThe experience of converting the Georgia TB Reference Guide offers specific and effective steps to converting a medical reference guide into a mobile application tool that is readily available, easy to use, and easy to update. The organic dissemination of the app beyond the state of Georgia's borders within the first six months of app launch underscores desire among TB healthcare professionals for high-quality digital reference content outside the state. This experience offers clear outlines for replication in other contexts and demonstrates the utility of similar mobile medical reference tools.

Abstract With today’s pace of rapid technological advancement, many patient issues in modern medicine are increasingly solvable by mobile app solutions, which also have the potential to transform how clinical research is conducted. However, many critical challenges in the app development process impede bringing these translational technologies to patients, caused in large part by the lack of knowledge among clinicians and biomedical researchers of “what it takes” to design, develop, and maintain a successful medical app. Indeed, problems requiring mobile app solutions are often nuanced, requiring more than just clinical expertise, and issues such as the cost and effort required to develop and maintain a well-designed, sustainable, and scalable mobile app are frequently underestimated. To bridge this skill set gap, we established an academic unit of designers, software engineers, and scientists that leverage human-centered design methodologies and multi-disciplinary collaboration to develop clinically viable smartphone apps. In this report, we discuss major misconceptions clinicians and biomedical researchers often hold regarding medical app development, the steps we took to establish this unit to address these issues and the best practices and lessons learned from successfully ideating, developing, and launching medical apps. Overall, this report will serve as a blueprint for clinicians and biomedical researchers looking to better benefit their patients or colleagues via medical mobile apps.

IntroductionSwab pooling may allow for more efficient use of point-of-care assays for SARS-CoV-2 detection in settings where widespread testing is warranted, but the effects of pooling on assay performance are not well described.MethodsWe tested the Thermo-Fisher Accula rapid point-of-care RT-PCR platform with contrived pooled nasal swab specimens.ResultsWe observed a higher limit of detection of 3,750 copies/swab in pooled specimens compared to 2,250 copies/swab in individual specimens. Assay performance appeared worse in a specimen with visible nasal mucous and debris, although performance was improved when using a standard laboratory mechanical pipette compared to the transfer pipette included in the assay kit.ConclusionClinicians and public health officials overseeing mass testing efforts must understand limitations and benefits of swab or sample pooling, including reduced assay performance from pooled specimens. We conclude that the Accula RT-PCR platform remains an attractive candidate assay for pooling strategies owing to the superior analytical sensitivity compared to most home use and point-of-care tests despite the inhibitory effects of pooled specimens we characterized.

Abstract Background Both modified FOLFIRINOX (mFFX) and gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel chemotherapy regimens have been shown to improve clinical outcomes in patients with pancreatic cancer, and are often used interchangeably as the standard of care. Preclinical studies often do not use these regimens, since administering these multiagent approaches can be difficult. In this study, we assessed the feasibility of administering these two chemotherapy regimens in spontaneous pancreatic tumors using KPC mice with the ultimate goal of advancing preclinical studies. Methods KPC mice were created by breeding Kras LSL−G12D/+ to Trp53 fl/fl ;Ptf1α Cre/+, resulting in Kras LSL−G12D/+ ;p53 fl/+ ;Ptf1α Cre/+ mice. At 14 weeks of age, mice were palpated for spontaneous tumor growth that was verified using ultrasounds. Mice with tumors under 15 mm in diameter were used. The mice were assigned to one of seven treatment regimens: 1 cycle of mFFX (FFX X1), 2 cycles of mFFX (FFX X2), 1 cycle of mFFXwith 40 Gy SBRT (FFX SBRT), 1 cycle of gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel (GEM/AB X1), 2 cycles of gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel (GEM/AB X2), 2 cycles of gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel with 40 Gy SBRT (GEM/AB SBRT), or saline only (control). Results In total, 92 mice were included. The median OS in the FFX X2 group was slightly longer that the median OS in the FFX X1 group (15 days vs 11 days, P = 0.003). Mice in the GEM/AB X2 group had longer OS when compared to mice in the GEM/AB X1 group (33.5 vs 13 days, P = 0.001). BackgroundCardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among women in the United States. A considerable number of young women already have risk factors for CVD. Awareness of CVD and its risk factors is critical to preventing CVD, yet younger women are less aware of CVD prevalence, its risk factors, and preventative behaviors compared to older women. ObjectiveThe purpose of this study is to assess CVD awareness among adolescent and young adult women and develop a lifestyle-based cardiovascular risk assessment tool for the promotion of CVD awareness among this population. MethodsThis study used a 3-phase iterative design process with young women and health care practitioners from primary care and reproductive care clinics in Atlanta, Georgia. In phase 1, we administered a modified version of the American Heart Association Women’s Health Survey to young women, aged 15-24 years (n=67), to assess their general CVD awareness. In phase 2, we interviewed young women, aged 13-21 years (n=10), and their health care practitioners (n=10), to solicit suggestions for adapting the Healthy Heart Score, an existing adult cardiovascular risk assessment tool, for use with this age group. We also aimed to learn more about the barriers and challenges to health behavior change within this population and the clinical practices that serve them. In phase 3, we used the findings from the first 2 phases to create a prototype of a new online cardiovascular risk assessment tool designed specifically for young women. We then used an iterative user-centered design process to collect feedback from approximately 105 young women, aged 13-21 years, as we adapted the tool. ResultsOnly 10.5% (7/67) of the young women surveyed correctly identified CVD as the leading cause of death among women in the United States. Few respondents reported having discussed their personal risk (4/67, 6%) or family history of CVD (8/67, 11.9%) with a health care provider. During the interviews, young women reported better CVD awareness and knowledge after completing the adult risk assessment tool and suggested making the tool more teen-friendly by incorporating relevant foods and activity options. Health care practitioners emphasized shortening the assessment for easier use within practice and discussed other barriers adolescents may face in adopting heart-healthy behaviors. The result of the iterative design process was a youth-friendly prototype of a cardiovascular risk assessment tool. ConclusionsAdolescent and young adult women demonstrate low awareness of CVD. This study illustrates the potential value of a cardiovascular risk assessment tool adapted for use with young women and showcases the importance of user-centered design when creating digital health interventions.

Global concern about problematic usage of the internet (PUI), and its public health and societal costs, continues to grow, sharpened in focus under the privations of the COVID-19 pandemic. This narrative review reports the expert opinions of members of the largest international network of researchers on PUI in the framework of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action (CA 16207), on the scientific progress made and the critical knowledge gaps remaining to be filled as the term of the Action reaches its conclusion.A key advance has been achieving consensus on the clinical definition of various forms of PUI. Based on the overarching public health principles of protecting individuals and the public from harm and promoting the highest attainable standard of health, the World Health Organisation has introduced several new structured diagnoses into the ICD-11, including gambling disorder, gaming disorder, compulsive sexual behaviour disorder, and other unspecified or specified disorders due to addictive behaviours, alongside naming online activity as a diagnostic specifier. These definitions provide for the first time a sound platform for developing systematic networked research into various forms of PUI at global scale. Progress has also been made in areas such as refining and simplifying some of the available assessment instruments, clarifying the underpinning brain-based and social determinants, and building more empirically based etiological models, as a basis for therapeutic intervention, alongside public engagement initiatives.However, important gaps in our knowledge remain to be tackled. Principal among these include a better understanding of the course and evolution of the PUI-related problems, across different age groups, genders and other specific vulnerable groups, reliable methods for early identification of individuals at risk (before PUI becomes disordered), efficacious preventative and therapeutic interventions and ethical health and social policy changes that adequately safeguard human digital rights. The paper concludes with recommendations for achievable research goals, based on longitudinal analysis of a large multinational cohort co-designed with public stakeholders.

The field of urban ecology has progressed since the mid-1990s through four major phases: an ecology in, of, for, and with cities. This progression reflects an interest to address the complexity of urban systems with social-ecological approaches. Further, this progression signifies an interest to address societal issues by co-designing and co-producing research in collaboration with diverse stakeholders from government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), businesses, and community associations. What remains unaddressed in this progression is a research mission orientation. While there may be a range of goals for an ecology with cities, a focus on regenerative urban ecologies is crucial. Regenerative ecologies may be seen as an endpoint along a continuum from degenerative ecologies to sustainability to regenerative ecologies. Regenerative ecologies rely upon feedback loops, similar to coral reefs and climax forests. In urban systems, these feedbacks in social-ecological systems may be considered virtuous cycles that create reinforcing, positive benefits for people and nature over time. Virtuous cycles or feedbacks are often conceived as a singular, positive feedback loop. However, virtuous cycles may be most impactful, adaptive, and resilient when they contain multiple positive and negative feedbacks and synergies. Research has several important roles in advancing virtuous cycles and regenerative urban ecologies. In this paper, we use our urban wood systems project in Baltimore as both a case study and model to illustrate an approach and lessons learned for regenerative ecologies, virtuous cycles, and the role of research. We conclude with lessons learned and consider opportunities and constraints for virtuous cycles, research, and regenerative urban ecologies in Baltimore and to other urban systems.

“Brain-predicted age” quantifies apparent brain age compared to normative neuroimaging trajectories. Advanced brain-predicted age has been well established in symptomatic Alzheimer disease (AD), but is underexplored in preclinical AD. Prior brain-predicted age studies have typically used structural MRI, but resting-state functional connectivity (FC) remains underexplored. Our model predicted age from FC in 391 cognitively normal, amyloid-negative controls (ages 18–89). We applied the trained model to 145 amyloid-negative, 151 preclinical AD, and 156 symptomatic AD participants to test group differences. The model accurately predicted age in the training set. FC-predicted brain age gaps (FC-BAG) were significantly older in symptomatic AD and significantly younger in preclinical AD compared to controls. There was minimal correspondence between networks predictive of age and AD. Elevated FC-BAG may reflect network disruption during symptomatic AD. Reduced FC-BAG in preclinical AD was opposite to the expected direction, and may reflect a biphasic response to preclinical AD pathology or may be driven by inconsistency between age-related vs. AD-related networks. Overall, FC-predicted brain age may be a sensitive AD biomarker.

Goal: Monitoring the genetic diversity and emerging mutations of SARS-CoV-2 is crucial for understanding the evolution of the virus and assuring the performance of diagnostic tests, vaccines, and therapies against COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 is still adapting to humans and, as illustrated by B.1.1.7 (Alpha) and B.1.617.2 (Delta), lineage dynamics are fluid, and strain prevalence may change radically in a matter of months. The National Institutes of Health's Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADxSM) initiative created a Variant Task Force to assess the impact of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants on in vitro diagnostic testing. Working in tandem with clinical laboratories, the FDA, and the CDC, the Variant Task Force uses both in silico modeling and in vitro testing to determine the effect of SARS-CoV-2 mutations on diagnostic molecular and antigen tests. Here, we offer an overview of the approach and activities of the RADx Variant Task Force to ensure test performance against emerging SARS-CoV-2 lineages.

Objective (s): To evaluate travel distance in women with advanced or recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer (OC) undergoing cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and the subsequent impact upon outcomes. Methods: An IRB-approved single-institution prospective registry was queried for women with OC who underwent HIPEC from 1/1/2009–12/1/2020. Demographic, oncologic, and surgical data were recorded. The patient's home zip code was compared to the institutional zip code to determine travel distance using Google Maps. Patients were divided into three strata for analysis: 1) local: ≤50 miles, 2) regional: 51–99 miles, and 3) distant: ≥100 miles and univariate analysis was performed. Results: Of 127 women, the median distance travelled was 57.0 miles (IQR: 20.6, 84.6). There were no significant differences in mild (28.3% vs. 26.3 vs. 24.1%), moderate (21.7% vs. 15.8% vs. 17.2%) or severe postoperative complications (11.7% vs. 5.3% vs. 17.2%) (p = 0.75) for local, regional and distant patients, respectively. There was no difference in progression-free survival (17.4 vs. 22.2 vs. 12.8 months, p > 0.05) or overall survival (57.3 vs. 61.6 vs. 29.2 months, p > 0.05) for local, regional or distant patients, respectively. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that women with OC are willing to travel for HIPEC, with over 50% traveling > 50 miles. Our results suggest that women who travel for HIPEC procedures are not at increased risk for perioperative complications or worse oncologic outcomes than those local to HIPEC centers.

Summary: As the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants brings the global pandemic to new levels, the performance of current rapid antigen tests against variants of concern and interest (VOC/I) is of significant public health concern. Here, we report assessment of the Abbot BinaxNOW COVID-19 Antigen Self-Test. Using genetically sequenced remnant clinical samples collected from individuals positive for SARS-CoV-2, we assessed the performance of BinaxNOW against the variants that currently pose public health threats. We measured the limit of detection of BinaxNOW against various VOC/I in a blinded manner. BinaxNOW successfully detected the Omicron (B.1.1.529), Mu (B.1.621), Delta (B.1.617.2), Lambda (C.37), Gamma (P.1), Alpha (B.1.1.7), Beta (B.1.351), Eta (B.1.525), and P.2 variants and at low viral concentrations. BinaxNOW also detected the Omicron variant in individual remnant clinical samples. Overall, these data indicate that this inexpensive and simple-to-use, FDA-authorized and broadly distributed rapid test can reliably detect Omicron, Delta, and other VOC/I.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the cervix is a rare and aggressive form of cervical cancer that presents with frequent metastasis at diagnosis and high recurrence rates. Primary treatment is multimodal, which often includes chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy. There are no data available to guide treatment for recurrence, and second-line therapies are extrapolated from small-cell lung carcinoma data. Close monitoring of these patients for recurrence is paramount. Evaluation of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in the peripheral blood is an attractive approach due to its non-invasive nature. Ultra-low-pass whole-genome sequencing (ULP-WGS) can assess tumor burden and response to therapy and predict recurrence; however, data are lacking regarding the role of ULP-WGS in small-cell carcinoma of the cervix. This study demonstrates a patient whose response to chemotherapy and cancer recurrence was accurately monitored by ctDNA analysis using ULP-WGS and confirmed with radiologic imaging findings.

Background: Adherence, specifically to noninsulin diabetes medications, statins, and renin-angiotensin system antagonists (i.e. angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors (ACEi), angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), and aliskiren), is a measure tracked by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to give Medicare Part D plans a star rating; pharmacies are impacted by these star ratings. The pharmacy is given a performance score based on the measure. Some pharmacies use a performance information management platform (PIMP) that allows pharmacies to better understand performance information to impact patient care. Objectives: (1) To evaluate if a monthly adherence monitoring and education service impacts the percentage of patients adherent determined by pharmacy performance scores; (2) To determine patient satisfaction with the service in a large community pharmacy chain. Methods: A six-month prospective interventional pilot study including patients with a proportion of days covered (PDC) of less than 80% for oral diabetes or renin-angiotensin system antagonists (RASA) medications was conducted in two pharmacies of a large community pharmacy chain in Southwest Virginia. Using pharmacy internal data analytics and PIMP data, the percentage of patients who are adherent to oral diabetes or RASA medications was determined including the baseline PDC for each patient. At the start of the study, the standard of care in this large community chain pharmacy was to address adherence, follow-up in one month and every three months thereafter. In this study, pharmacists provided monthly telephonic adherence monitoring and education for a six-month period. Each session was scripted for medication adherence history, education and data collection. The pharmacist provided guidance and counseling based on how the patient answered the questions. Pharmacists gathered information about adherence patterns and behaviors using a 14 item Likert-scale and multiple choice-based questionnaire during the first session. After completion of the final adherence monitoring and education session, pharmacists gathered patient satisfaction information using an eight item Likert-scale questionnaire. At the end of the six-month period, using PIMP data, the percentage of patients adherent to oral diabetes or RASA medications was determined based on pharmacy performance scores. The data was analyzed using uni-variate and bi-variate statistics to determine if there was a difference in pharmacy performance scores from the pre-study analysis. The adherence patterns and behaviors, as well as patient satisfaction with the program was evaluated to determine factors influencing nonadherence. Results: A total of 55 patients were identified in two pharmacies, ten of which were excluded or declined involvement, leaving 45 enrolled in the adherence monitoring and education service. Of the 45 enrolled patients, ten completed the adherence patterns and behaviors questionnaire. About half of the patients were men (50.95%) with an average age of 71.17 years and taking an average of 6.55 prescription medications. All patients had Medicare Part D insurance and majority had a yearly income of less than $40,000. The average baseline PDC was 68.92. In pharmacy 1, the average performance score for oral diabetes medications trended down and the average performance score for hypertension medications trended up over the study period. In pharmacy 2, the average performance score for oral diabetes medications trended up and the average performance score in hypertension medications trended up over the study period. The adherence patterns and behaviors questionnaire revealed the majority of patients rarely forgot to take medications or run out of medications. Additionally, cost of medications did not seem to impact adherence and majority of patients knew the names and indications of their medications. Only one patient completed the patient satisfaction survey. Conclusions: An adherence monitoring and education service had mixed results in improving patient adherence and pharmacy performance scores. Only one patient completed the satisfaction survey, thus no conclusions can be made regarding patient satisfaction of the program. More research needs to be done regarding telephonic adherence programs. Article type: Original Research

Objective: To compare community-based pharmacy medication errors before and after a one-hour live interactive training session for both pharmacists and technicians. Methods: A one group pre-post intervention design study was conducted in 20 community-based pharmacies in a district of a large national community pharmacy chain. A one-hour live, interactive session was developed based on incident reports and medication error trends including medication error definition, ways in which medication errors occur, strategies for mitigating errors, information about human error, and methods and habits to improve patient safety. At least 50% of full-time staff for each of the 20 pharmacies were required to attend a training session between December 1, 2017-January 15, 2018. Participants completed a demographics survey documenting gender, age, credentials, number of years of experience, and years of service with the company. Pharmacies were categorized as low, medium or high volume based on prescription count. Medication errors were compared six months pre- and post-live education session. Data were analyzed using SAS version 9.4. Results: One hundred and thirty- five errors and 111 errors were reported pre-and post-live training (mean 6.85 and 5.55, p < 0.301), respectively. How mammalian neural circuits generate rhythmic activity in motor behaviors, such as breathing, walking, and chewing, remains elusive. For breathing, rhythm generation is localized to a brainstem nucleus, the preBötzinger Complex (preBötC). Rhythmic preBötC population activity consists of strong inspiratory bursts, which drive motoneuronal activity, and weaker burstlets, which we hypothesize reflect an emergent rhythmogenic process. If burstlets underlie inspiratory rhythmogenesis, respiratory depressants, such as opioids, should reduce burstlet frequency. Indeed, in medullary slices from neonatal mice, the μ-opioid receptor (μOR) agonist DAMGO slowed burstlet generation. Genetic deletion of μORs in a glutamatergic preBötC subpopulation abolished opioid-mediated depression, and the neuropeptide Substance P, but not blockade of inhibitory synaptic transmission, reduced opioidergic effects. We conclude that inspiratory rhythmogenesis is an emergent process, modulated by opioids, that does not rely on strong bursts of activity associated with motor output. These findings also point to strategies for ameliorating opioid-induced depression of breathing.

Well-managed and connected protected area networks are needed to combat the 6th mass extinction, yet the implementation of plans intended to secure landscape connectivity remains insufficient. The failure to translate planning efforts into effective action (i.e., the research-implementation gap) hinders our ability to conserve biodiversity threatened by ongoing climate change and habitat fragmentation. Sustained collaboration between researchers and practitioners to co-produce conservation strategies can bridge this gap by providing end-users with implementation guidance based on legitimate, relevant, and trusted information. However, few case studies capture methods for the co-production and use of climate-wise connectivity knowledge. Here we describe the framework for sustained engagement used by a multi-jurisdictional practitioner network to co-produce climate-wise linkages for the interior coastal ranges in Northern California. We found iterative co-production shaped ecological objectives, input data, analytical methods, and implementation priorities. Stakeholders used both co-produced and local socio-ecological (e.g., development threat, management priorities) knowledge to finalize corridor implementation plans. Priority corridors afforded greater climate benefit and were more likely to connect lands managed by participant organizations. Our results demonstrate how collaborative partnerships can bridge the gap between connectivity research and implementation. Lessons learned, outcomes, and future plans provide insights to advance landscape-scale resilience to climate change.

Climate-wise connectivity is essential to provide species access to suitable habitats in the future, yet we lack a consistent means of quantifying climate adaptation benefits of habitat linkages. Species range shifts to cooler climates have been widely observed, suggesting we should protect pathways providing access to cooler locations. However, in topographically diverse regions, the effects of elevation, seasonality, and proximity to large water bodies are complex drivers of biologically relevant temperature gradients. Here, we identify potential terrestrial and riparian linkages and their cooling benefit using mid-century summer and winter temperature extremes for interior coastal ranges in Northern California. It is rare for the same area to possess both terrestrial and riparian connectivity value. Our analysis reveals distinct differences in the magnitude and orientation of cooling benefits between the summer maximum and winter minimum temperatures provided by the linkages we delineated for the area. The cooling benefits for both linkage types were maximized to the west during summer, but upslope and to the northeast during winter. The approach we employ here provides an improved method to prioritize climate-wise connectivity and promote landscape resilience for topographically diverse regions.

We present a microarray nonlinear calibration (MiNC) method for quantifying antibody binding to the surface of protein microarrays that significantly increases the linear dynamic range and reduces assay variation compared with traditional approaches. A serological analysis of guinea pig Mycobacterium tuberculosis models showed that a larger number of putative antigen targets were identified with MiNC, which is consistent with the improved assay performance of protein microarrays. MiNC has the potential to be employed in biomedical research using multiplex antibody assays that need quantitation, including the discovery of antibody biomarkers, clinical diagnostics with multi-antibody signatures, and construction of immune mathematical models.

Accurate and timely information about land cover pattern and change in urbanareas is crucial for urban land management decision-making, ecosystem monitoring andurban planning. This paper presents the methods and results of an object-basedclassification and post-classification change detection of multitemporal high-spatialresolution Emerge aerial imagery in the Gwynns Falls watershed from 1999 to 2004. TheGwynns Falls watershed includes portions of Baltimore City and Baltimore County,Maryland, USA. An object-based approach was first applied to implement the land coverclassification separately for each of the two years. The overall accuracies of theclassification maps of 1999 and 2004 were 92.3% and 93.7%, respectively. Following theclassification, we conducted a comparison of two different land cover change detectionmethods: traditional (i.e., pixel-based) post-classification comparison and object-basedpost-classification comparison. The results from our analyses indicated that an objectbasedapproach provides a better means for change detection than a pixel based methodbecause it provides an effective way to incorporate spatial information and expertknowledge into the change detection process. The overall accuracy of the change mapproduced by the object-based method was 90.0%, with Kappa statistic of 0.854, whereasthe overall accuracy and Kappa statistic of that by the pixel-based method were 81.3% and0.712, respectively.

The link of low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and high proteinuria to cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality is well known. However, its link to mortality due to other causes is less clear.We studied 367,932 adults (20-93 years old) in the Korean Heart Study (baseline between 1996-2004 and follow-up until 2011) and assessed the associations of creatinine-based eGFR and dipstick proteinuria with mortality due to CVD (1,608 cases), cancer (4,035 cases), and other (non-CVD/non-cancer) causes (3,152 cases) after adjusting for potential confounders.Although cancer was overall the most common cause of mortality, in participants with chronic kidney disease (CKD), non-CVD/non-cancer mortality accounted for approximately half of cause of death (47.0%for eGFR

Ceriporiopsis subvermispora oxalate oxidase (CsOxOx) is the first bicupin enzyme identified that catalyzes manganese-dependent oxidation of oxalate. In previous work, we have shown that the dominant contribution to catalysis comes from the monoprotonated form of oxalate binding to a form of the enzyme in which an active site carboxylic acid residue must be unprotonated. CsOxOx shares greatest sequence homology with bicupin microbial oxalate decarboxylases (OxDC) and the 241-244DASN region of the N-terminal Mn binding domain of CsOxOx is analogous to the lid region of OxDC that has been shown to determine reaction specificity. We have prepared a series of CsOxOx mutants to probe this region and to identify the carboxylate residue implicated in catalysis. The pH profile of the D241A CsOxOx mutant suggests that the protonation state of aspartic acid 241 is mechanistically significant and that catalysis takes place at the N-terminal Mn binding site. The observation that the D241S CsOxOx mutation eliminates Mn binding to both the N- and C- terminal Mn binding sites suggests that both sites must be intact for Mn incorporation into either site. The introduction of a proton donor into the N-terminal Mn binding site (CsOxOx A242E mutant) does not affect reaction specificity. Mutation of conserved arginine residues further support that catalysis takes place at the N-terminal Mn binding site and that both sites must be intact for Mn incorporation into either site.

Urban residential expansion increasingly drives land use, land cover and ecological changes worldwide, yet social science theories explaining such change remain under-developed. Existing theories often focus on processes occurring at one scale, while ignoring other scales. Emerging evidence from four linked U.S. research sites suggests it is essential to examine processes at multiple scales simultaneously when explaining the evolution of urban residential landscapes. Additionally, focusing on urbanization dynamics across multiple sites with a shared research design may yield fruitful comparative insights. The following processes and social-hierarchical scales significantly influence the spatial configurations of residential landscapes: household-level characteristics and environmental attitudes; formal and informal institutions at the neighborhood scale; and municipal-scale land-use governance. While adopting a multi-scale and multi-site approach produces research challenges, doing so is critical to advancing understanding of coupled socio-ecological systems and associated vulnerabilities in a dynamic and environmentally important setting: residential landscapes.

Hospital ambulance diversions are prevalent and increasing nationwide as emergency departments experience growing congestion. Using negative binomial regressions, this paper links the number of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) deaths to the level and extent of diversion in the five boroughs of New York City. The results indicate that both high levels of ambulance diversion and simultaneous diversion across hospitals are associated with increasing numbers of deaths from AMI.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterised by age-related cognitive decline. Brain accumulation of amyloid-β plaques and tau tangles is required for a neuropathological AD diagnosis, yet up to one-third of AD-pathology positive community-dwelling elderly adults experience no symptoms of cognitive decline during life. Conversely, some exhibit chronic cognitive impairment in absence of measurable neuropathology, prompting interest into cognitive resilience-retained cognition despite significant neuropathology-and cognitive frailty-impaired cognition despite low neuropathology. Synapse loss is widespread within the AD-dementia, but not AD-resilient, brain. Recent evidence points towards critical roles for synaptic proteins, such as neurosecretory VGF, in cognitive resilience. However, VGF and related proteins often signal as peptide derivatives. Here, nontryptic peptidomic mass spectrometry was performed on 102 post-mortem cortical samples from individuals across cognitive and neuropathological spectra. Neuropeptide signalling proteoforms derived from VGF, somatostatin (SST) and protachykinin-1 (TAC1) showed higher abundance in AD-resilient than AD-dementia brain, whereas signalling proteoforms of cholecystokinin (CCK) and chromogranin (CHG) A/B and multiple cytoskeletal molecules were enriched in frail vs control brain. Integrating our data with publicly available single nuclear RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) showed enrichment of cognition-related genes in defined cell-types with established links to cognitive resilience, including SST interneurons and excitatory intratelencephalic cells., (© 2024. This study aimed to determine which physiological factors impact net efficiency (ηnet) in oldest-old individuals at different stages of skeletal muscle disuse. To this aim, we examined ηnet, central haemodynamics, peripheral circulation, and peripheral factors (skeletal muscle fibre type, capillarization and concentration of mitochondrial DNA [mtDNA]). Twelve young (YG; 25 ± 2 years), 12 oldest-old mobile (OM; 87 ± 3 years), and 12 oldest-old immobile (OI; 88 ± 4 years) subjects performed dynamic knee extensor (KE) and elbow flexors (EF) exercise. Pulmonary oxygen uptake, photoplethysmography, Doppler ultrasound and muscle biopsies of the vastus lateralis and biceps brachii were used to assess central and peripheral adaptations to advanced ageing and disuse. Compared to the YG (12.1 ± 2.4%), the ηnet of lower-limb muscle was higher in the OM (17.6 ± 3.5%, P < 0.001), and lower in the OI (8.9 ± 1.9%, P < 0.001). These changes in ηnet during KE were coupled with significant peripheral adaptations, revealing strong correlations between ηnet and the proportion of type I muscle fibres (r = 0.82), as well as [mtDNA] (r = 0.77). No differences in ηnet were evident in the upper-limb muscles between YG, OM and OI. In view of the differences in limb-specific activity across the lifespan, these findings suggest that ηnet is reduced by skeletal muscle inactivity and not by chronological age, per se. Likewise, this study revealed that the age-related changes in ηnet are not a consequence of central or peripheral haemodynamic adaptations, but are likely a product of peripheral changes related to skeletal muscle fibre type and mitochondrial density. KEY POINTS: Although the effects of ageing and muscle disuse deeply impact the cardiovascular and skeletal muscle function, the combination of these factors on the mechanical efficiency are still a matter of debate. By measuring both upper- and lower-limb muscle function, which experience differing levels of disuse, we examined the influence of central and peripheral haemodynamics, and skeletal muscle factors linked to mechanical efficiency. Across the ages and degree of disuse, upper-limb muscles exhibited a preserved work economy. In the legs the oldest-old without mobility limitations exhibited an augmented mechanical efficiency, which was reduced in those with an impairment in ambulation. These changes in mechanical efficiency were associated with the proportion of type I muscle fibres. Recognition that the mechanical efficiency is not simply age-dependent, but the consequence of inactivity and subsequent skeletal muscle changes, highlights the importance of maintaining physical activity across the lifespan., (© 2024 The Authors. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive motor neuron loss, with additional pathophysiological involvement of non-neuronal cells such as microglia. The commonest ALS-associated genetic variant is a hexanucleotide repeat expansion (HRE) mutation in C9orf72. Here, we study its consequences for microglial function using human iPSC-derived microglia. By RNA-sequencing, we identify enrichment of pathways associated with immune cell activation and cyto-/chemokines in C9orf72 HRE mutant microglia versus healthy controls, most prominently after LPS priming. Specifically, LPS-primed C9orf72 HRE mutant microglia show consistently increased expression and release of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9). LPS-primed C9orf72 HRE mutant microglia are toxic to co-cultured healthy motor neurons, which is ameliorated by concomitant application of an MMP9 inhibitor. Finally, we identify release of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) as a marker for MMP9-dependent microglial dysregulation in co-culture. These results demonstrate cellular dysfunction of C9orf72 HRE mutant microglia, and a non-cell-autonomous role in driving C9orf72-ALS pathophysiology in motor neurons through MMP9 signaling., (© 2023. Telomeres play an essential role in maintaining chromosomal integrity in the face of physiological stressors. Although the age-related shortening of TL (telomere length) in highly proliferative tissue is predominantly due to the replication process, the mechanism for telomere shortening in skeletal muscle, which is minimally proliferative, is unclear. By studying TL in both the upper and lower limbs of the young, old-mobile and old-immobile subjects and by virtue of the bipedal nature of human locomotion, which declines with age, it may be possible to elucidate the mechanism(s) responsible for cellular aging of skeletal muscle. With this approach, we revealed that TL (~15 kb) in arm skeletal muscle is unaffected by age. In contrast TL fell progressively in the legs across the young (~15 kb), the old mobile (~13 kb) and old immobile (~11 kb) subjects. Interestingly, there was a reciprocal increase in leg muscle free radicals across these groups that was correlated with TL (r=0.7), with no such relationship in the arm (r=0.09). Our results document that chronological age does not affect the cellular aging of skeletal muscle, but reveals that physical inactivity, probably mediated by free radicals, has a profound effect upon this process.

Objectives: The objective was to perform ex vivo evaluation of non-Gaussian diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) for assessment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), including presence of treatment-related necrosis, using fresh liver explants., Methods: Twelve liver explants underwent 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging using a DKI sequence with maximal b-value of 2000 s/mm(2). A standard monoexponential fit was used to calculate apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and a non-Gaussian kurtosis fit was used to calculate K, a measure of excess kurtosis of diffusion, and D, a corrected diffusion coefficient accounting for this non-Gaussian behavior. The mean value of these parameters was measured for 16 HCCs based upon histologic findings. For each metric, HCC-to-liver contrast was calculated, and coefficient of variation (CV) was computed for voxels within the lesion as an indicator of heterogeneity. A single hepatopathologist determined HCC necrosis and cellularity., Results: The 16 HCCs demonstrated intermediate-to-substantial excess diffusional kurtosis, and mean corrected diffusion coefficient D was 23% greater than mean ADC (P=.002). HCC-to-liver contrast and CV of HCC were greater for K than ADC or D, although these differences were significant only for CV of HCCs (P≤.046). ADC, D and K all showed significant differences between non-, partially and completely necrotic HCCs (P≤.004). Among seven nonnecrotic HCCs, cellularity showed a strong inverse correlation with ADC (r=-0.80), a weaker inverse correlation with D (-0.24) and a direct correlation with K (r=0.48)., Conclusions: We observed non-Gaussian diffusion behavior for HCCs ex vivo; this DKI model may have added value in HCC characterization in comparison with a standard monoexponential model of diffusion-weighted imaging., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Purpose: To compare three-dimensional (3D) mangafodipir trisodium-enhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) cholangiography with conventional T2-weighted MR cholangiography for depiction and definition of intrahepatic biliary anatomy in liver transplant donor candidates., Materials and Methods: One hundred eight healthy liver transplant donor candidates were examined with two MR cholangiographic methods. All candidates gave written informed consent, and the study was approved by the institutional review board. First, breath-hold transverse and coronal half-Fourier single-shot turbo spin-echo and breath-hold oblique coronal heavily T2-weighted turbo spin-echo sequences were performed. Second, mangafodipir trisodium-enhanced breath-hold fat-suppressed 3D gradient-echo sequences were performed through the ducts (oblique coronal plane) and through the entire liver (transverse plane). Interpretation of biliary anatomy findings, particularly variants affecting right liver lobe biliary drainage, and degree of interpretation confidence at both 3D mangafodipir trisodium-enhanced MR cholangiography and T2-weighted MR cholangiography were recorded and compared by using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Then, consensus interpretations of both MR image sets together were performed. Intraoperative cholangiography was the reference-standard examination for 51 subjects who underwent right lobe hepatectomy. The McNemar test was used to compare the accuracies of the individual MR techniques with that of the consensus interpretation of both image sets together and to compare each technique with intraoperative cholangiography., Results: Biliary anatomy was visualized with mangafodipir trisodium enhancement in all patients. Mangafodipir trisodium-enhanced image findings agreed with findings seen at combined interpretations significantly more often than did T2-weighted image findings (in 107 [99%] vs 88 [82%] of 108 donor candidates, P < .001). Confidence was significantly higher with the mangafodipir trisodium-enhanced images than with the T2-weighted images (mean confidence score, 4.5 vs 3.4; P < .001). In the 51 candidates who underwent intraoperative cholangiography, mangafodipir trisodium-enhanced imaging correctly depicted the biliary anatomy more often than did T2-weighted imaging (in 47 [92%] vs 43 [84%] donor candidates, P = .14), whereas the two MR imaging techniques combined correctly depicted the anatomy in 48 (94%) candidates., Conclusion: Mangafodipir trisodium-enhanced 3D MR cholangiography depicts intrahepatic biliary anatomy, especially right duct variants, more accurately than does conventional T2-weighted MR cholangiography., ((c) RSNA, 2004.)

Our objective was to investigate the coexistence of vascular and biliary anatomic variants, the latter of which are known to increase the risk of biliary complications in living liver donor transplantation. A total of 108 consecutive liver donor candidates were examined by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging that included 2 MR cholangiography methods, T2-weighted MR cholangiography and mangofodipir-enhanced T1-weighted three-dimensional (3D) MR cholangiography, as well as gadolinium-enhanced MR angiography and venography of the liver. Images were interpreted by at least 2 investigators in consensus for definition of hepatic arterial, portal venous, and biliary anatomy. A subset of 51 subjects underwent laparotomy for right hepatectomy. Of the 108 subjects examined, 50 (46%) demonstrated normal hepatic artery, portal vein, and biliary anatomy. Variants of the hepatic artery were found in 27 of 108 (25%) subjects, of the portal vein in 12 of 108 (11%) subjects, and of the bile ducts in 30 of 108 (28%) subjects. Of the 27 subjects with hepatic arterial variants, 8 (30%) also had variant biliary anatomy. The association between hepatic arterial variants and biliary variants was not statistically significant (P >.5). However, of the 12 subjects with portal vein variants, 7 (58%) had biliary variants, and in 6 of 7 cases, the right posterior hepatic duct was anomalous. By chi-square analysis, the association between portal venous and biliary variants was significant (P =.012). In conclusion, over half of subjects with portal vein variants were found to have anomalous biliary anatomy, which always involved the hepatic ducts of the right lobe. The association between portal venous and biliary variants is statistically significant, while there is no significant association between hepatic arterial and biliary variants.

The sensitivity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients who undergo transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cirrhosis is not known. We prospectively evaluated 24 patients with known HCC who underwent MRI and subsequent transplantation within 60 days (mean, 20 days). Using a phased-array coil at 1.5T, breath-hold turbo STIR and T2-weighted MR images were performed. Dynamic gadolinium-enhanced MRI was performed using a two- or three-dimensional gradient echo pulse sequence with images obtained in the hepatic arterial, portal venous, and equilibrium phases. The prospective interpretation of the MR study was directly compared with thin-section pathology evaluation of the explanted livers. All 24 patients had at least one HCC, and MR diagnosed tumor in 21 (88%) of these patients. On a lesion-by-lesion basis, MRI depicted 39 of 118 HCC for an overall sensitivity of 33%. MRI detected five (100%) of five lesions >5 cm, 20 (100%) of 20 lesions >2 cm but not exceeding 5 cm, 11 (52%) of 21 lesions between 1 and 2 cm, and three (4%) of 72 lesions <1 cm. Of the nine patients with carcinomatosis (innumerable lesions less than 1 cm), MR detected three lesions in one patient. Of the 15 dysplastic nodules found at pathology, MRI depicted a single 1.8-cm high-grade lesion, for a sensitivity of 7%. In conclusion, MRI is sensitive for the detection of HCC measuring at least 2 cm in diameter but is insensitive for the diagnosis of small HCC (<2 cm) and carcinomatosis.

Objective: Our purpose was to evaluate a comprehensive MR imaging strategy for recipients of liver transplants that relies on dynamic interpolated three-dimensional (3D) MR imaging for simultaneous vascular, parenchymal, and extrahepatic imaging., Materials and Methods: Twenty-three consecutive adult patients underwent 30 MR imaging examinations between 2 days and 99 months (mean, 15 months) after transplantation using a breath-hold 3D gradient-echo sequence (TR range/TE range, 3.7-4.7/1.8-1.9; flip angle, 12-30 degrees ) with an intermittent fat-saturation pulse and interpolation in the section-select direction to enable pixel size 3 mm or less in all dimensions. Unenhanced and triphasic contrast-enhanced 3D imaging (average dose, 0.13 mmol/kg of gadopentetate dimeglumine) was performed. A subset of patients (n = 13) also underwent MR cholangiopancreatography using half-Fourier single-shot turbo spin-echo imaging. MR imaging examinations were correlated with digital subtraction angiography (n = 8), contrast-enhanced cholangiography (n = 9), sonography (n = 13), and histopathology (n = 14)., Results: MR imaging revealed abnormal findings in 27 (90%) of 30 examinations, including vascular disease in nine, biliary complications in four, and evidence of intra- or extra-hepatic hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence in six. Digital subtraction angiography confirmed seven MR angiography examinations but suggested disease overestimation in one. Contrast-enhanced cholangiography confirmed findings of MR cholangiopancreatography in seven cases but suggested disease underestimation in two., Conclusion: Dynamic interpolated 3D MR imaging combined with dedicated MR cholangiopancreatography can provide a comprehensive assessment of vascular, biliary, parenchymal, and extrahepatic complications in most recipients of liver transplants.

Objective: Our aim was to investigate the feasibility of MR imaging as a comprehensive preoperative imaging test for examination of liver donor candidates for adult-to-adult right lobe transplantation., Subjects and Methods: Twenty-five consecutive donor candidates were examined at 1.5 T using a torso phased array coil with breath-hold T1- and T2-weighted imaging of the abdomen, MR cholangiography using T2-weighted turbo spin-echo imaging, and MR angiography and venography of the liver using two interpolated three-dimensional spoiled gradient-echo sequences (average dose of gadolinium contrast material, 0.17 mmol/kg). Images were interpreted for liver parenchymal and extrahepatic abnormalities; measurements of right and left lobe liver volumes; definition of hepatic arterial, portal venous, and hepatic venous anatomy; and definition of the biliary branching pattern. Findings were compared with those of conventional angiography in 13 patients, 11 of whom also had surgical findings for comparison., Results: Nine patients were excluded as candidates for donation on the basis of MR imaging findings that included parenchymal or extrahepatic abnormalities in five patients, vascular anomalies in two, and biliary anomalies in three. Two patients who did not undergo surgery underwent conventional angiography that confirmed MR angiographic findings except for a small (<2 mm) accessory left hepatic artery missed on MR imaging. Of the nine patients who underwent successful right hepatectomy, all MR imaging findings were corroborated intraoperatively. In two patients, right hepatectomy was aborted at laparotomy because of intraoperative cholangiography findings; in one of them, the biliary finding was unsuspected on MR imaging., Conclusion: A comprehensive MR imaging examination has the potential to serve as the sole preoperative imaging modality for living adult-to-adult liver donor candidates provided improvements in definition of intrahepatic biliary anatomy can be achieved.
