Lead poisoning from ingestion of bullet fragments in gut piles and unretrieved deer carcasses continues to cause mortality in bald eagles. To address this issue, the Midwest region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) initiated an outreach program during 2016-2018 encouraging hunters to voluntarily use nonlead ammunition while deer hunting on National Wildlife Refuges (NWRs). We conducted a survey to assess this program using seven factors that might influence USFWS staff support for the nonlead outreach program: innovativeness, lead exposure to bald eagles, availability of training and outreach materials, satisfaction with program implementation, importance of informational materials, and if they were a deer hunter. Multiple linear regression showed attitudes toward eagles' lead risk and importance of informational materials had the strongest effect on program support, followed by an individual's innovativeness. Although previous studies have focused on influencing hunters' nonlead use, our findings show staff attitudes and perceptions about nonlead strongly affect program support and ultimately program outcomes.

Temperate insectivorous bats value high prey abundance and appropriate vegetative structure when selecting foraging habitats. Forests, particularly in the eastern United States, provide prime foraging habitats for bats but can be heavily impacted by non-native plants, which may alter arthropod diversity and abundance, as well as vegetative structure. To investigate the associations between non-native plants and insect abundance, vegetative structure, and, consequently, bat activity, we performed vegetation surveys, insect trapping, and acoustic monitoring at 23 forested plots in northern New Jersey, USA. We predicted that non-native vegetation would either positively influence bat activity by increasing structural openness (thus, facilitating flight) or negatively influence bat activity by lowering the abundance of putative prey. We also hypothesized that vegetative characteristics, and therefore non-native vegetation, impact bats differently depending on their foraging habitat preferences. The percent of non-native cover of the ground and midstory vegetative layers of our study plots ranged from 0 to 92.92% (x¯ = 46.94 ± 5.77 SE) and was significantly correlated with structural vegetative characteristics, such as midstory clutter (β = 0.01 ± 0.006 SE), but not putative prey abundance (β = −0.81 ± 2.57 SE). Generalized linear models with only vegetative characteristics best predicted overall bat activity and foraging, which were greatest in areas with a high percent non-native vegetation and low midstory clutter. Although percent non-native vegetation and midstory clutter were also significant effects for bats that prefer to forage in open areas, neither vegetative characteristics nor prey abundance were significant effects for clutter-loving bats. Such findings suggest that vegetative structure is more important than prey availability for predicting overall insectivorous bat activity, but other factors, such as foraging strategy and life history traits, can impact how bat guilds respond to non-native vegetation. Therefore, more research is required to reveal additional mechanisms by which non-native plants impact bats.

Abstract Satellite altimetry, which measures water level with global coverage and high resolution, provides an unprecedented opportunity for a wide and refined understanding of the changing tides in the coastal area. But its sampling frequency is too low to satisfy the Nyquist frequency requirement and too few data points per year are available to recognize a sufficient number of tidal constituents to capture the trend of tidal changes on a yearly basis. To address these issues, a novel regularized least‐square approach is developed to relax the sampling interval limit to the range of 9–11 days, reaching the revisit time of the existing satellites. In this method, the prior information of the regional tidal amplitudes is used to support a least square analysis to obtain the amplitudes of the tidal constituents for water elevation time series of different lengths and time intervals. Synthetic data experiments performed in Delaware Bay and Galveston Bay showed that the proposed method can determine the tidal amplitudes with high accuracy and the sampling interval can be extended to the application level of major altimetry satellites. The proposed algorithm was further validated using the data of the altimetry mission, Jason‐3, to show its applicability to irregular and noisy data. The new method could help identify the changing tides with sea‐level rise and anthropogenic activities in coastal areas, informing coastal flooding risk assessment and ecosystem health analysis.

Climate change is the one of the most controversial issues in environmental history since natural processes and human activities lead to causation. This complexity often thwarts communication and education efforts. Some research suggests that place-based approaches are effective for delivering climate change instruction because they feature local and observable impacts, thus connecting human behavior with climate change. This study developed and evaluated the efficacy of a place-based climate change education program using a one-group, pre and posttest design. The study involved 29 high-school students who participated in a one-week, summer education program at Prairie Fork Conservation Area in mid-Missouri. Use of place-based education was hypothesized to promote knowledge, awareness, responsibility, hope, and behavioral intention of participants regarding climate change. Results suggested that the program was an effective way to increase understanding of climate change, as evidenced by significant increases in a variety of measures. Implications for using place-based education are discussed.

Purpose: The aim of this scoping review was to explore current program evaluation practices across various medical schools. Methods: We conducted searches in MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase (Elsevier) and ERIC (ed.gov) for original research and review articles related to medical education evaluation with key words evaluation, program, medical education, pre-registration, framework, curriculum, outcomes, evaluation, quality. We followed Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) process for scoping reviews. Results: Thirty-two articles were included. Studies were primarily concerned with either proving (n = 21) or improving efficacy of their programs (n = 11). No studies aimed at comparing programs. Nine were literature reviews. Others aimed to develop a new evaluation model (n = 7) or apply (n = 12) or validate (n = 4) an existing model (or part thereof). Twenty-two studies explicitly identified an evaluation model they had used or would recommend. Most frequently used models for evaluation were: Context-Input-Process-Product, Kirkpatrick, World Federation Medical Education, and the Standards by Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation. Overall, evaluations were learner-focused and accreditation driven with a minority considering the broader influences of program success. Conclusion: Program evaluation is fundamental to driving the quality of education delivered to produce workforce-ready healthcare professionals. The focus of current evaluations is on student experience and content delivery with a significant gap in the existing literature on evaluation related to staff, learner/staff well-being, equity, diversity, and meta evaluation. IntroductionCC-002 is a prospective cooperative group study conducted by NRG Oncology to evaluate whether a pre-operative GA-GYN score derived from a predictive model utilizing components of an abbreviated geriatric assessment (GA) is associated with major post-operative complications in elderly women with suspected ovarian, fallopian tube, primary peritoneal or advanced stage papillary serous uterine (GYN) carcinoma undergoing primary open cytoreductive surgery.MethodsPatients 70 years or older with suspected advanced gynecologic cancers undergoing evaluation for surgery were eligible. A GA-GYN score was derived from a model utilizing the GA as a pre-operative tool. Patients were followed for six weeks post-operatively or until start of chemotherapy. Post-operative events were recorded either directly as binary occurrence (yes or no) using CTCAE version 4.0.ResultsThere were 189 eligible patients, 117 patients with primary surgical intervention and 37 patients undergoing interval cytoreduction surgery. The association between higher GA-GYN score and major postoperative complications in patients undergoing primary surgery was not significant (p = 0.1341). In a subgroup analysis of patients with advanced staged malignant disease who underwent primary cytoreductive surgery, there was a trend towards an association with the GA-GYN score and post-operative complications.ConclusionThe pre-operative GA-GYN score derived from a predictive model utilizing components of an abbreviated geriatric assessment was not predictive of major post-operative complications in elderly patients undergoing primary open cytoreductive surgery. However, there was an association between GA-GYN score and post-operative complications in a subgroup of patients with advanced staged malignant disease.
