Abstract

Mindful organizing is a team-level capability that allows teams in high-risk environments to anticipate when something can potentially go wrong and adapt their operations just in time to protect the organizational system from negative consequences. This study aimed to extend our understanding of how mindful organizing affects employees' propensity to engage in a broad range of safety citizenship behaviours through the mediation of participative safety self-efficacy. Participative safety self-efficacy is a psychological state that enables individuals to have confidence in their capability to engage in constructive behaviours that go beyond the formal requirements of their job description. A multilevel mediation model was tested using data collected from a large sample of chemical workers (N = 443) operating in fifty work teams. The findings showed that mindful organizing on a team level fosters both individual safety citizenship (helping; voice; initiative) and prescribed safety compliance through enhancing individual participative self-efficacy. This mediation relationship is significantly stronger for safety citizenship than for safety compliance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Accreditation of counseling services on college campuses is a relatively recent development. These areas are covered in accreditation standards: relationship of counseling center to college community; counseling service roles; ethical standards; counseling service personnel; related guidelines; and multiple counseling agencies. As public accountability continues to become more important and as the professionalism movement continues, one clear way to establish at least minimal standards for counseling services is for an agency to seek and achieve accreditation. 17. Licensure: The Challenge to Counseling Practitioners.

Abstract

This paper discusses potential problems of non-licensable counselors and psychologists in counseling center settings. Special mention is made of potential problems of non-licensable center directors in view of the standards established by the International Association of Counseling Services, Incorporated, and the Standards for Providers of Psychological Services of the American Psychological Association. It further discusses implications of independent licensing of counselors as "health service providers," and mentions the attempt in Florida to rewrite psychologist licensing regulations to allow doctoral level counselors to qualify as psychologists. 18. Licensing of Psychologists and Counselors in Florida: An Opinion and Recommendations.

Abstract

This paper discusses the Psychological Licensing Act in Florida as it relates to doctoral level counselors with degrees of a "psychological nature," as opposed to degrees with a "major in psychology." By implication, it addresses problems of licensure of professionals in many states who identify themselves as counseling psychologists and whose degrees are awarded by non-APA approved programs in colleges of education. This paper should be of special interest to counselors in private practice who do not currently enjoy licensing as counselors or as psychologists. Specific recommendations for licensing of psychologists, counselors, clinical social workers, and marriage and family counselors under a revised Florida statute are made. (Author)

Abstract

The question of which factors are central in determining whether a cell will undertake a new round of mitosis or will decycle has been examined in the isolated thymic lymphocyte model. Such cell populations possess both in vivo and in vitro a subpopulation of quiescent lymphoblasts which may be induced to reinitiate their mitotic programme. In the intact animal the major determinant of proliferative activity is the plasma ionised calcium concentration. However it has been established in culture that a variety of hormones, ions, cyclic nucleotides, plant lectins and ionophores may like calcium elicit a mitogenic response. These agents do not appear however to initiate DNA synthesis in an identical fashion. Rather there are two distinct intracellular mitogenic axes. The first axis includes a number of adenylate cyclase stimulants, cyclic AMP, phosphodiesterase inhibitors and magnesium ions. It was found that all these mitogens required extracellular magnesium ions to exhibit their stimulatory capacity. This dichotomy in mitogenic activity was further emphasised by the observation that these mitogens are all inhibited by testosterone, whilst the magnesium-independent mitogens were insensitive to this androgen. Indeed this second group of stimulatory factors required the presence of calcium ions in the extracellular milieu for activity, and were, in contrast to the magnesium-dependent mitogens inhibited by the presence of oestradiol in the culture. By examining the interrelationships between these various mitogens and inhibitors it has been possible to propose a mechanism to describe the activation process in the thymocyte. Studies of the metabolism of cyclic nucleotides, membrane potential and transmembrane ion fluxes indicate that there may be a complex relationship between membrane fluidity, ion balance and cyclic nucleotide levels which may individually or in concert promote the initiation of DNA synthesis. A number of possible mechanisms are discussed to account for these observations.
