A number of studies have constrained the cessation of martian valley network activity to around the Noachian-Hesperian boundary, but the total time period over which these features formed remains poorly constrained. Most attempts to ascertain valley network formative timescales rely on an intermittency factor that varies widely for terrestrial rivers and is unknown for Mars. In this contribution, superposition relationships are used to identify crater populations that pre- and postdate valley network incision, resulting in maximum cumulative valley formation times of ∼108 years. These timescales correspond with long-term erosion rates of ∼0.25 m/Myr, similar to those calculated for the Middle to Late Noachian as well as the central Atacama Desert since the Late Miocene. Assuming sediment transport rates previously calculated for other martian valley networks, this implies a minimum fluvial intermittency of ∼10−5, several orders of magnitude lower than modern day Earth rivers but similar to values independently calculated for some martian fluvial deposits. This low intermittency suggests that martian valley incision may have been significantly hindered by erosion into existing bedrock or by boulder armoring of the valley floor. Alternatively, unlike river valleys on Earth, runoff events driving martian valley network activity may have been non-seasonal, Milankovitch-like cycles, with long eras of quiescence between periods of intensified fluvial activity. We present an inventory of alluvial fans and deltas within martian impact craters based on a systematic global survey of Context Camera images. Our database includes 314 fan‐hosting craters, with a total of 890 alluvial fans and 114 deltas. Alluvial fans and deltas are more widespread than previously reported (∼40°N to 54°S) and are strongly banded with respect to latitude. Most craters with alluvial fans occur at higher elevations (10°S–30°S) and along the dichotomy boundary (0°–10°N). Deltas occur at lower elevations (0°–40°N) where access to groundwater may have enabled the formation of lakes, and to a lesser extent in the highlands (0°–30°S). Alluvial fans in southern mid‐latitude craters preferentially formed along the northern and southern walls, which may reflect climatic control through solar insolation. The widespread distribution within the observed latitude bands and the similar Hesperian to Amazonian age of alluvial fan‐hosting craters is consistent with late‐stage synoptic precipitation. Plain Language Summary: Martian alluvial fans and deltas are intriguing features because they provide evidence for surface water and a climate that was very different than the present‐day conditions. This study presents a planet‐wide catalog of craters that host alluvial fans and interpreted deltas to understand where and when they formed. We systematically searched images from the Context Camera because this data set has the necessary resolution and coverage to identify and classify the landforms of interest. Our inventory of 314 craters with 890 alluvial fans and 114 deltas shows that these landforms are more numerous and widespread than previously reported. The similar age and distribution of craters with alluvial fans in the southern mid‐latitudes is consistent with a late occurring, widespread (rather than local) source of water. Estimates of river paleodischarges have been used to constrain the former climate of Mars. Paleodischarge has been calculated using mechanistic approximations of the channel bed‐shear stress at the threshold of particle motion or correlative width‐discharge relations derived from empirical terrestrial hydraulic geometry data. We apply both these methods to a study set of gaged terrestrial rivers with field‐measured bankfull properties to assess the reliability of discharge estimates given similar uncertainties as ancient martian rivers. We find that the threshold method yields conservative values, provided a reasonable grain size is used. However, we find that digital elevation models of a similar resolution to those constructed from Context Camera (CTX) data may not be of sufficient resolution to be useful for estimating paleohydrologic conditions. Results from our analysis demonstrate the inherent uncertainties when approximating paleodischarges on Mars and stress the need to consider realistic boundary conditions when determining such values. Abstract Non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries account for 70% of all ACL injuries, and can lead to missed time from activity for athletes and a predisposition for knee osteoarthritis. Prior research has shown that athletes who land in a stiff manner, with larger internal knee adduction and extension moments, are at greater risk for an ACL injury. A three-dimensional accelerometer placed at the tibial tuberosity may prove to be a low-cost means of assessing these risk factors. The primary purpose of this study was to compare tibial accelerations during drop landings with kinematic and kinetic risk factors for ACL injury measured with three-dimensional motion capture. The secondary purpose of this study was to compare these measures between soft and stiff landings. Participants were instructed to land bilaterally in preferred, soft, and stiff manners. Peak knee flexion decreased significantly from soft to stiff landings. Peak internal knee extension moment, peak anterior/posterior knee acceleration, and peak medial knee acceleration all increased significantly from soft to stiff landings. No associations were found between landing condition and either frontal plane knee angle at maximum vertical ground reaction force or peak internal knee adduction moment. Significant positive associations between kinetics and accelerations were found only in the sagittal plane. As such, while a three-dimensional accelerometer could discern between soft and stiff landings in both planes, it may be better suited to predict kinetic risk factors in the sagittal plane. A series of previously unstudied alluvial fans are actively forming along the Hilina Pali escarpment on the south flank of Kīlauea volcano on the Island of Hawaii. These fans are characterized by their steep slopes, coarse grain sizes, and lobate surface morphology. Fans are fed by bedrock channels that drain from the Ka'ū Desert, but sediment is mostly sourced from deeply eroded alcoves carved into the Hilina Pali. Examination of recent deposits indicates that the fans are dominantly constructed from gravel and larger sized sediment. Flow discharges calculated using field measurements of channel geometries and the Manning equation indicate that events inducing sediment transport are of high magnitude and occur during high intensity precipitation events, including Kona storms. The fans along the Hilina Pali appear to be a rare example of fans formed predominately from sieve lobe deposition owing to the area's high slopes, high discharge, coarse bedload, and limited supply of fine-grained sediment. Given such conditions, sieve lobe deposition can form large lobes consisting of boulder-sized material, which may have implications for the identification of depositional processes when interpreting the stratigraphic record. Fan-shaped sedimentary landforms on Mars are important geomorphic markers of past water flow and characterizing the distribution and morphology of these features can yield insights into the planet's climatic evolution. We present a new database of 1501 martian fan-shaped sedimentary landforms that builds upon previous surveys and uses Context Camera images. This comprehensive global survey includes both alluvial fans and putative deltas, which we term scarp-fronted fan deposits (SFDs), across the entire martian surface. We classified each fan-shaped landforms based on their morphology as alluvial fans, channelized SFDs, smooth SFDs, and terraced SFDs. Martian alluvial fans are highly concentrated in the high southern tropical latitudes while SFDs are more common near the equator. Both alluvial fans and SFDs are found at lower elevations than Late Noachian to Early Hesperian valley networks, suggesting a climatic change in the locations of stable liquid water. Alluvial fans within impact craters are preferentially located on north, south, and east facing slopes, and are concentrated near the location of highest rim topographic relief; together these observations support orographically-influenced precipitation and snowmelt as a runoff source. For every fan in the database we collected morphologic data, which we compare with terrestrial alluvial fans. Relationships between alluvial fan catchment and fan morphology vary little across the martian surface, suggesting relatively similar processes. Although stratigraphic evidence of a deltaic deposition is lacking, previously conducted experiments along with the depositional basins of the channelized and terraced SFDs generally support deltaic formation. Crater counts indicate that many alluvial fans are within Hesperian and Amazonian impact craters, indicating that significant fluvial erosion occurred during Mars' relatively recent history. • Most martian alluvial fans are in craters, and many of these craters date to the Hesperian and Amazonian Periods. • Consistent morphology implies that alluvial fans across Mars formed under similar processes and environmental conditions. • The depositional setting of terraced and channelized scarp fronted deposits supports a deltaic formation.
