Abstract

The growing availability of computational resources has significantly increased the interest of the scientific community in performing complex multi-physics and multi-domain simulations. However, the generation of appropriate computational grids for such problems often remains one of the main bottlenecks. The use of a domain partitioning with non-conforming grids is a possible solution, which, however, requires the development of robust and efficient inter-grid interpolation operators to transfer a scalar or a vector field from one domain to another. This work presents a novel approach for interpolating quantities across non-conforming meshes within the framework of the classical mortar method, where weak continuity conditions are enforced. The key contribution is the introduction of a novel strategy that uses mesh-free Radial Basis Function (RBF) interpolations to compute the mortar integral, offering a compelling alternative to traditional projection-based methods. We propose an efficient algorithm tailored for complex three-dimensional settings allowing for potentially significant savings in the overall computational cost and ease of implementation, with no detrimental effects on the numerical accuracy. The formulation, analysis, and validation of the proposed RBF-based algorithm is discussed with the aid of a set of numerical examples, demonstrating its effectiveness. Furthermore, the details of the implementation are discussed and a test case involving a complex geometry is presented, to illustrate the applicability and advantages of our approach in real-world problems., Comment: 36 pages, 20 figures, 2 tables

This article extends, in a stochastic setting, previous results in the determination of feasible exchange ratios for merging companies. A first outcome is that shareholders of the companies involved in the merging process face both an upper and a lower bounds for acceptable exchange ratios. Secondly, in order for the improved `bargaining region' to be intelligibly displayed, the diagrammatic approach developed by Kulpa is exploited.

7. OPUS: An Integrated Assessment Model for Satellites and Orbital Debris

Abstract

An increasingly salient public policy challenge is how to manage the growing number of satellites in orbit, including large constellations. Many policy initiatives have been proposed that attempt to address the problem from different angles, but there is a paucity of analytical tools to help policymakers evaluate the efficacy of these different proposals and any potential counterproductive outcomes. To help address this problem, this paper summarizes work done to develop an experimental integrated assessment model -- Orbital Debris Propagators Unified with Economic Systems (OPUS) -- that combines both astrodynamics of the orbital population and economic behavior of space actors. For a given set of parameters, the model first utilizes a given astrodynamic propagator to assess the state of objects in orbit. It then uses a set of user-defined economic and policy parameters -- e.g. launch prices, disposal regulations -- to model how actors will respond to the economic incentives created by a given scenario. For the purposes of testing, the MIT Orbital Capacity Tool (MOCAT) version 4S was used as the primary astrodynamics propagator to simulate the true expected target collision probability ($p_c$) for a given end-of-life (EOL) disposal plan. To demonstrate propagator-agnosticism, a Gaussian mixture probability hypothesis density (GMPHD) filter was also used to simulate $p_c$. We also explore economic policy instruments to improve both sustainability of and economic welfare from orbit use. In doing so, we demonstrate that this hybrid approach can serve as a useful tool for evaluating policy proposals for managing orbital congestion. Abstract

Abstract Microcirculatory dysfunction, hypoxia, and inflammation are considered to be central in the pathogenesis of sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (AKI). In this experimental study, we hypothesized that extracorporeal removal of inflammatory cytokines by hemoadsorption (HA) therapy may mitigate renal injury associated with sepsis-induced AKI. To this end, we investigated renal microcirculatory oxygenation and perfusion, oxygen consumption, lactate, systemic hemodynamic variables, tubular cell integrity, inflammatory mediators, and kidney function in a rat model of septic AKI elicited by endotoxin infusion. Three groups of rats were investigated on extracorporeal circulation: HA only, LPS, and LPS + HA. Endotoxin infusion reduced cortex microcirculatory oxygenation and raised creatinine and lactate levels. Renal microcirculatory oxygenation, measured by two independent techniques (phosphorescence (µPO2) and spectrophotometry/Doppler (µHbO2sat and $$\mu \text{RBCv}$$ )), was ameliorated by HA therapy. The renal oxygen consumption, lactate and creatinine levels were restored in the LPS + HA group. A reduced amount of injured tubular cells was found in histological analysis of the kidneys. This experimental study demonstrated an improvement in multiple determinants of kidney oxygenation, damage, and systemic blood perfusion by HA in a clinically relevant rat model of septic AKI. Further studies are needed to optimize and support the clinical use of HA as a renal protective strategy.

Abstract

Background and objective: High-resolution micro-ultrasound (microUS) is an advanced imaging tool. Our objective was to determine whether systematic microUS use for transrectal biopsy (TRBx) improves the detection rate for clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) in comparison to transperineal biopsy (TPBx) performed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/conventional transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) fusion software. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data for men who underwent prostate biopsies, including those on active surveillance (AS). TRBx was performed under microUS guidance, while MRI/TRUS fusion was consistently used to guide TPBx. Patients were matched according to propensity score matching (PSM). The primary endpoint was comparison of the csPCa detection rate with the two approaches. Secondary endpoints included predictors of csPCa (International Society of Urological Pathology grade group ≥2, assessed via multivariable logistic regression) and complication rates. Key findings and limitations: Overall, 1423 patients were enrolled. After applying PSM we identified an analytical cohort of 1094 men, 582 in the TRBx group and 512 in the TPBx group. There was no significant difference in the csPCa detection rate between the TRBx (45%) and TPBx (51%) groups (p = 0.07). Complications occurred in nine of 1094 patients (1%). On adjusted multivariable analysis, TPBx had a similar csPCa detection rate to TRBx (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.26;p = 0.09). Abstract

Abstract Background Human papilloma virus (HPV) related cancers of the oropharynx are rapidly increasing in incidence and may soon represent the majority of all head and neck cancers. Improved monitoring and surveillance methods are thus an urgent need in public health. Main text The goal is to highlight the current potential and limitations of liquid biopsy through a meta analytic study on ctHPVDNA and TTMV-HPVDNA. It was performed a Literature search on articles published until December 2023 using three different databases: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Studies that evaluated post-treatment ctHPVDNA and TTMV-HPVDNA in patients with HPV + OPSCC, studies reporting complete data on the diagnostic accuracy in recurrence, or in which the number of true positives, false positives, true negatives, and false negatives was extractable, and methods of detection of viral DNA clearly defined. The meta-analysis was conducted following the Meta-analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) reporting guidelines. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of ctHPVDNA and TTMV by ddPCR to define its efficacy in clinical setting for the follow up of HPV-OPSCC. Conclusion The 12 studies included in the meta-analysis provided a total of 1311 patients for the analysis (398 valuated with ctHPVDNA and 913 with TTMV-HPVDNA). Pooled sensitivity and specificity were 86% (95% CI: 78%-91%) and 96% (95% CI: 91%-99%), respectively; negative and positive likelihood ratios were 0.072 (95% CI: 0.057–0.093) and 24.7 (95% CI: 6.5–93.2), respectively; pooled DOR was 371.66 (95% CI: 179.1–918). The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.81 (95% CI, 0.67–0.91). Liquid biopsy for the identification of cell free DNA might identify earlier recurrence in HPV + OPSCC patients. At the present time, liquid biopsy protocol needs to be standardized and liquid biopsy cannot yet be used in clinical setting. In the future, a multidimensional integrated approach which links multiple clinical, radiological, and laboratory data will contribute to obtain the best follow-up strategies for the follow-up of HPV-OPSCC.

Abstract This study delves into the pivotal role that indicators play in designing, assessing, and guiding policies for sustainable urban development. Indicators, encompassing both quantitative and qualitative measures, serve as essential tools in evaluating efforts toward sustainable development, providing a practical and objective means of understanding the complex urban environment. The lack of a robust database is identified as a hindrance to monitoring sustainable development progress, underscoring the importance of comprehensive indicators. The study employs a bibliometric literature review methodology, focusing on smart city and sustainability indicators (SSCI) from 2015 to 2022. A total of 818 articles were narrowed down to 191 through rigorous criteria. The study showcases a growing interest in this field, with the number of articles published experiencing a remarkable 288% increase from 2015 to 2022. China emerges as a focal point, leading in both article production and citations, emphasizing its commitment to sustainable development and smart city initiatives. The keywords "sustainable development", "sustainability" and “urban development” had the most occurrences in text analysis. We found three different clusters with k-means analysis, and the circular economy indicators were the most representative category. In conclusion, the study underscores the holistic vision of SSCI in the current scenario, balancing technology and sustainability to improve urban quality of life while safeguarding the planet. Encouraging further research into integrating resilience-focused indicators and innovative solutions is crucial for enhancing sustainable urban development and informing policy decisions.

Abstract

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are being studied as possible low-cost energy-efficient alternatives to active relays, with the goal of solving the coverage issues of millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) network deployments. In the literature, these surfaces are often studied by idealizing their characteristics. Notably, it is often assumed that IRSs can tune with arbitrary frequency the phase-shifts induced by their elements, thanks to a wire-like control channel to the next generation node base (gNB). Instead, in this work we investigate an IRS-aided time division multiple access (TDMA) cellular network, where the reconfiguration of the IRS may entail an energy or communication cost, and we aim at limiting the number of reconfigurations over time. We develop a clustering-based heuristic scheduling, which optimizes the system sum-rate subject to a given number of reconfigurations within the TDMA frame. To such end, we first cluster user equipments (UEs) with a similar optimal IRS configuration. Then, we compute an overall IRS cluster configuration, which can be thus kept constant while scheduling the whole UEs cluster. Numerical results show that our approach is effective in supporting IRSs-aided systems with practical constraints, achieving up to 85% of the throughput obtained by an ideal deployment, while providing a 50% reduction in the number of IRS reconfigurations., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to WCNC 2023 Workshops

Abstract

SARS-CoV-2 is a novel coronavirus that infects the respiratory tract and was the causing agent of COVID-19, declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. Several studies have been carried out to understand the pathophysiology of the disease, immune reactions, and risk factors that could aggravate the condition and predict the prognosis of patients. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the most prevalent laboratory data of hospitalized patients associated with discharge or death. A survey was conducted utilizing the medical records of COVID-19 cases in patients treated in the intensive care unit of the Guilherme Álvaro Hospital in the seaside city of Santos, Brazil. We correlated the most important variables reported in the literature to provide a global comparison of the population affected by the virus in the Santos lowlands.

Abstract

Abstract Subantarctic Nothofagus forests are the southernmost forests in the world, with negligible atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition. Most paradigms about the role of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi in N cycling and plant N uptake at high latitudes have been tested in boreal coniferous forests, while in the southern hemisphere, ECM hosts are primarily angiosperms. Using ITS1 meta‐barcoding, we characterized ECM and saprotrophic fungal communities in evergreen and deciduous Nothofagus forests forming monodominant and mixed stands in the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego (Chile and Argentina). We assessed the N economy of Nothofagus by correlating host species with fungal relative abundances, edaphic variables, net N mineralization, microbial biomass N and the activity of eight extracellular soil enzymes activities. The N economy of deciduous N. pumilio forests was strikingly similar to boreal coniferous forests, with the lowest inorganic N availability and net N mineralization, in correlation to higher relative abundances of ECM fungi with enzymatic capacity for organic N mobilization (genus Cortinarius). In contrast, the N economy of evergreen N. betuloides forests was predominantly inorganic and correlated with ECM lineages from the family Clavulinaceae, in acidic soils with poor drainage. Grassy understory vegetation in deciduous N. antarctica forests likely promoted saprotrophic fungi (i.e., genus Mortierella) in correlation with higher activities of carbon‐degrading enzymes. Differences between Nothofagus hosts did not persist in mixed forests, illustrating the range of soil fertility of these ECM angiosperms and the underlying effects of soil and climate on Nothofagus distribution and N cycling in southern Patagonia.

Introdução: Anemia hemolítica autoimune (AHAI) por anticorpos frios é uma patologia rara caracterizada pela presença de elevados níveis de autoanticorpos circulantes, na maioria da classe IgM que reagem em baixas temperaturas e permanecem reativos em temperaturas próximas a 30°C. Segundo recente Consenso Internacional de Anemia Hemolítica Auto Imune (Jäger U. et. al, Blood Rev. 2020 e Berentsen S. Front Immunol. 2020;) a Doença da aglutinina fria (CAD) foi definida como uma doença de etiologia linfoproliferativa, clonal de células B com produção de autoanticorpo da clase IgM, com especificidade anti-I ou i e capacidade de ativar a via do Complemento gerando hemólise intravascular. A investigação imuno-hematológica (IH) é caracterizada pelo teste da antiglobulina direto (TAD) fortemente positivo para o fragmento de complemento C3d e a presença de anticorpo da classe IgM no soro com um título da aglutinina ≥ 64 a 4°C; títulos de aglutinina fria inferiores normalmente não possuem relevância clínica. O TAD para IgG é geralmente negativo, mas pode ser fracamente positivo em até 20% dos pacientes. A Síndrome da aglutinina fria (CAS) foi caracterizada por uma condição transitória secundária causada por uma doença clinica associa a uma infecção bacteriana ou viral, como Mycoplasma pneumoniae ou vírus Epstein-Barr. CAS também pode ocorrer após certas doenças malignas e distúrbios autoimunes. A investigação IH se caracteriza pelo TAD (C3d) positivo e presença de IgM no soro com titulação da aglutinina fria menor que 64. Objetivo: Investigação imuno-hematológica de AHAI a frio segundo os critérios do Consenso Internacional 2020 permitindo o diagnóstico laboratorial diferencial entre CAD e CAS. Materiais e métodos: Foram estudados cinco pacientes, no período entre fevereiro e agosto de 2024 com quadro clínico e laboratorial de AHAI que apresentaram na investigação IH inicial presença de crioaglutinina. Os pacientes foram submetidos à avaliação IH com a realização do TAD poliespecífico e monoespecífico (IgG e C3d), e eluição do anticorpo pela técnica da glicina ácida. A pesquisa de anticorpos no soro foi realizada em técnica de gel centrifugação utilizando meio de baixa força iônica (LISS) e hemácias tratadas com a enzima papaína (PAP) com posterior identificação da especificidade do anticorpo. Para esses pacientes foi realizada a técnica de titulação da aglutinina a 4°C. Resultados: O resultado do TAD foi fortemente positivo, com intensidade de aglutinação de 4+ a 3+ com soro poliespecífico para todos os pacientes, no TAD monoespecífico (C3d) a aglutinação variou de 1+ a 4+, o eluato foi negativo em quatro pacientes e um paciente apresentou eluato positivo com auto-IgG. No soro de três pacientes identificamos especificidade para Anti-I e em dois pacientes Anti-IgM sem especificidade definida. Em três pacientes o título da aglutinina a 4°C foi superior a 64 e em dois pacientes o título foi inferior a 64. Discussão e conclusão: Segundo os critérios definidos no Consenso Internacional de 2020, os resultados obtidos da investigação laboratorial IH (TAD e titulação da aglutinina a 4°C) possibilitaram diferenciar e classificar os cinco pacientes, sendo três como CAD (2 Leucemias Linfoides e 1 Linfoma não Hodgkin) e dois como CAS (ambos doenças infecciosas). Concluindo, os resultados das avaliações IH foram compatíveis com as etiologias das doenças de aglutinina à frio.

Introdução: A premissa na formação de um aloanticorpo é que o antígeno correspondente seja negativo. No caso do sistema Lewis, considerando que o antígeno Le(a) é precursor do antígeno Le(b) não é esperado que um indivíduo de fenótipo Le(a-b+) desenvolva anti-Lea. Os antígenos do sistema Lewis são amplamente distribuídos pelo corpo, encontrados no pâncreas, estômago, mucosas de intestino, músculo esquelético e outros. A síntese dos antígenos Lewis depende da presença de duas enzimas codificadas pelo gene Se (FUT2) e o gene Le (FUT3); o gene Le produz fucosil transferase, que adiciona fucose diretamente à cadeia precursora tipo I para formar o antígeno Lea. A presença dos genes Se (H transferase) e Le eventualmente leva à formação do antígeno Leb, através da adição de fucose à cadeia H tipo I. Como as hemácias utilizam cadeias do tipo 2, elas não sintetizam antígenos Lewis, porém esses antígenos são adsorvidos do plasma para a membrana dos glóbulos vermelhos. Anticorpos Lewis podem causar reações transfusionais hemolíticas, DHRN, e rejeição a transplante renal (Combs, 2009; Höglund et al , 2013), porém poucos casos são descritos na literatura. O alo anticorpo anti-Lea é pouco frequente e segundo alguns autores identificado apenas em indivíduos com fenótipo Le (a-b-); menos frequente em indivíduos do grupo O e possivelmente apenas em ABH secretores. Poucos relatos existem da detecção de anti-Lea por técnica de hemaglutinação em indivíduos de fenótipo Le(a-b+) (Judd et al , Transfusion). Caso clínico: Paciente do sexo masculino, 43 anos, com fratura de fêmur, sem histórico transfusional, foi identificado anticorpo anti-Lea reativo até à temperatura ambiente. A especificidade do anticorpo foi definida em três painéis enzimáticos comerciais (hemácias tratadas com a enzima papaína), com reatividade 3+ de hemaglutinação. Teste da antiglobulina direto negativo. A fenotipagem das hemácias do paciente foi realizada com soros monoclonais, em equipamento Erytra (Grifols Diagnostic Solutions) e mostrou o fenótipo Le(a-b+). Discussão: Há uma hipótese de que indivíduos de fenótipo Le(a-b+) são incapazes de formar anti-Lea, devido à presença do antígeno em diversos fluidos e secreções; raros relatos descrevem a detecção de anti-Lea em indivíduos de fenótipo Le(a-b+). O anticorpo anti-Lea formado por indivíduos Le(a-b-) pode ser diferente do formado pelos indivíduos Le(a-b+). Um estudo mostrou que enquanto 87% dos anti-Lea formados por indivíduos Le(a-b-) foram hemaglutinantes, nenhum dos anticorpos anti-Lea formados por indivíduos Le(a-b+) foi capaz de causar hemaglutinação, tendo sido detectados apenas por ensaio imunoenzimático (ELISA). Além disso, segundo esse estudo, enquanto 85% dos anti-Lea de indivíduos Le(a-b-) tem um componente IgG, nenhum dos anti-Lea formado por indivíduos Le(a-b+) tem IgG detectável. Chan & Lin em 2011 descrevem 10 pacientes de fenótipo Le(a-b+) com presença de anti-Lea detectado por LIAT (Real time PCR) e considera a possibilidade de haver relação com variante molecular Fut3. No presente relato, mostramos a presença de anti-Lea em paciente de fenótipo Le(a-b+), detectado por técnica de hemaglutinação, e reativo em temperatura ambiente.

Abstract

Abstract Purpose Bariatric surgery (BS), an effective treatment for severe obesity and its comorbidities, may result in micronutrient and vitamin deficiencies. This monocentric prospective observational study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of a specifically designed vitamin/mineral formula (Bariatrifast, BIOITALIA S.r.l., Italy) for preventing and treating micronutrient deficiencies in patients submitted to BS. Methods Twenty patients with severe obesity (mean weight and BMI: 123.5 kg (range 88–174) and 43.3 kg/m2 (range 37–54) respectively) underwent BS (10 vertical sleeve gastrectomy VSG, 10 Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, RYGB). The mean age was 49.9 years (range 27–68). After a presurgical visit (V0), follow-up visits were performed at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery (V1–V4). Recorded data included weight, height and BMI. A complete blood count, measurement of ferritin, folic acid, vitamin B12, ionized calcium, 25 OH vitamin D, parathyroid hormone (PTH) were obtained. Following BS, patients started the daily oral multivitamin and mineral supplement. Results All patients achieved a significant weight loss (mean − 34.7 ± 11.8 kg). No deficiencies of various vitamins/micronutrients were detected during the entire study period. Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract

Abstract Background This study aimed to explore the role of psychological detachment from work in the relationship of boundary violations and flourishing, as well as gender differences among university teachers during mandatory telework. We developed and tested a moderate mediation model where psychological detachment was the explanatory mechanism of the relationship between boundary violations with flourishing and using gender as the moderating variable. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 921 Brazilian university teachers (mean age 44 years, 681 women and 240 men) during mandatory telework. Multigroup analysis and moderate mediation were performed using Mplus 7.2. Results Psychological detachment mediated the relationship between boundary violations (in both directions) and flourishing and work-to-family violations were more harmful to women’ recovery instead family-to-work violations were more harmful to men’ recovery, among university teachers during mandatory telework. Conclusion By focusing on boundary violations in the context of mandatory telework, the study sheds light on the impact of blurred boundaries between work and personal life. This contributes both literature on work-life balance and literature recovery. Moreover, it helps to understand a crisis setting of remote work. Further, the study’s findings regarding gender differences highlight how men and women may experience and cope with boundary violations differently during mandatory telework, supporting future specific interventions across genders.

PIRENEA and PIRENEA 2 are experimental setups dedicated to the study of fundamental molecular processes involving species of astrochemical interest. The coupling of a VUV source to PIRENEA has allowed us to study the fragmentation pathways and stability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) containing aliphatic bonds under conditions relevant for astrophysical photodissociation regions. Abstract

When the first CubeSats were launched nearly two decades ago, few people believed that the miniature satellites would likely prove to be a useful scientific tool. Skeptics abounded. However, the last decade has seen the highly successful implementation of space missions that make creative and innovative use of fast-advancing CubeSat and small satellite technology to carry out important science experiments and missions. Several projects now have used CubeSats to obtain first-of-their-kind observations and findings that have formed the basis for high-profile engineering and science publications, thereby establishing without doubt the scientific value and broad utility of CubeSats. In this paper, we describe recent achievements and lessons learned from a representative selection of successful CubeSat missions with a space weather focus. We conclude that these missions were successful in part because their limited resources promoted not only mission focus but also appropriate risk-taking for comparatively high science return. Quantitative analysis of refereed publications from these CubeSat missions and several larger missions reveals that mission outcome metrics compare favorably when publication number is normalized by mission cost or if expressed as a weighted net scientific impact of all mission publications., Comment: 35 pages, 5 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication by Space Weather Journal
