Durant quatre années l'Azienda Generale Italiana Petroli (AGIP), la Société Nationale Elf Aquitaine, l'Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) et Total Compagnie Française des Pétroles ont joint leurs efforts pour développer un outil de géologie structurale et un programme de rétro-déformation. Le but était d'améliorer le pointé des sections sismiques en validant l'interprétation faite par des tests de cohérence géométrique. Une section qui peut être rétro-déformée en suivant le principe de conservation de la matière est dite équilibrée. Ce projet de recherche a abouti à la réalisation de deux logiciels LOCACE et BALISS. LOCACE (LOgiciel de Construction Assistée de Coupes Equilibrées) travaille à partir d'une section géologique. BALISS (BALanced Interpretation of Seismic Sections) permet d'appliquer à l'image sismique profondeur les principes de l'équilibrage. Cet article rappelle les fondements de cette méthode, les différents types de déformation - rigide, couche à couche, cisaillement simple - leur mise en oeuvre dans LOCACE/BALISS et la philosophie de l'utilisation de ces logiciels. The need to use concepts of structural geology for seismic interpretation is something that is often difficult to apply because of the complexity of the zones investigated and especially because of the lack of interaction among specialists in the different areas of exploration. Likewise, quantitative geology is fairly recent, and computerized tools for structural geology are still rare although there is a multitude of them in geophysics. The existence of graphic workstations and computerized tools favoring the effective interactivity of software packages now makes it possible to integrate this implementation. The two French oil companies, Total Compagnie Française des Pétroles and Elf Aquitaine, together with Institut Français du Pétrole (IFP) have joined their efforts since 1987 to develop a tool for testing the geologic and geometrical coherence of sections. Azienda Generale Petroli (AGIP) joined this research group in 1988. Two software packages have been created. The first one, LOCACE (LOgiciel de Construction Assistée de Coupes Equilibrées), is a tool for geologists wanting to balance a section, i. e. to check to see whether the present geometry is compatible with a probable prior state and that a deformation path exists without any loss of material between the two states. The cross-section can then be restored to build its geometry before its deformation and thus to quantify the history of the burial and/or emersion of series. The second software, BALISS (BALanced Interpretation of Seismic Sections), has to do with the depth seismic image and serves to improve picking by using the results of a retrodeformation performed with LOCACE. In particular, it horizontalizes reflectors, not solely by an offsetting of traces along the vertical, but according to geologic deformation criteria that combine the conservation of areas and lengths. Four deformation modes are used to describe large-scale upper-crustal deformations. First, the flexural-slip method in which the slip occurs parallel to the beds (Fig. 1). Flexural slip is a line-balancing technique based on the deformation of a dip-domain grid and preserving both bed lengths and area. LOCACE is use to apply this method even for layers with thickness variations (Fig. 2). Then the simple shear method, in which shear is imposed in a given direction), might be the right method for synsedimentary faulting in an extensional area but might lead to wrong results in a compressional area (Fig. 4). Rigid deformation, i. e. rotation and translation, can be added to any of these methods together with decompaction, which is computed by standard backstripping method that takes various lithologies into account. For incompetent layers, such as a salt sheet for instance, overall area conservation may be applied. After describing the basic principles of the balancing of geologic sections and the different deformation modes formulated as equations by LOCACE, we show how these principles can be used for restoring a seismic image as can be done with BALISS.

A complete study of source-rock geochemical data has been carried out for the Bolivian foothills and foreland (Sub Andean Zone, Chaco and Madre de Dios) in order to quantify the petroleum potential of the area. Overall available data have been compiled in a database, and a synthesis of the results is presented here. Besides the classical mid-Devonian source rocks (Tequeje Fm in the north, Limoncito Fm in the center and Los Monos Fm in the south), others may be just as important : theTomachi Fm (late Devonian) in the north of the country and the Copacabana Fm. (late Carboniferous-early Permian) in the northern Sub Andean Zone. Both present an excellent potential with S2 up to 40 mg HC/g and average values larger than 10 mg HC/g on few hundred meters. The latest Cretaceous (Flora Fm in the northern Sub Andean Zone) also presents locally a high potential but has almost no influence, its thickness being quite reduced. Almost all the source rocks matured during the Neogene due to the subsidence in the Andean foreland and, locally, in the piggyback basins, and are thus involved in the current petroleum system. Silurian and Lower Paleozoic units also contain thick shale beds, but these source rocks were mature before the Jurassic in most of the country, except in the Chaco, the Boomerang and the central Sub Andean Zone, where the Silurian is not nowadays overmature and may play an important role. The different zones are compared based on their Source Potential Index (SPI) which indicates that the richest areas are the northern Sub Andean Zone and the Madre de Dios basin with SPI greater than 10 t/m². Since these two areas remain almost unexplored and, at least for the northern Sub Andean zone, present very large structures, these results allow to be optimistic about the possibilities for future exploration. Une base de données géochimiques a été mise en place entre 1994 et 1995 à YPFB (Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos) afin de regrouper les connaissances sur les roches mères de Bolivie. Ce travail a été fait dans le cadre de la convention de coopération qui lie depuis 1987 YPFB et l'ORSTOM - Institut Français de Recherche Scientifique pour le Développement en Coopération. L'établissement de cette base de données a permis une synthèse du potentiel pétrolier du pays, la partie concernant le bassin de Madre de Dios, la zone subandine et le Chaco, c'est-à-dire toute la zone potentiellement pétrolière du pays, hors Altiplano, est ici présentée. La base contient actuellement les analyses d'un peu plus de 3000 échantillons. Les roches mères sont Paléozoïques et se sont déposées dans un contexte de bassin d'avant-pays; celui ci s'étendait sur la cordillère ainsi que sur l'avant-pays actuel du Silurien au Permien. Le bassin, restreint initialement à la zone sud-ouest, s'est ensuite étendu vers le nord. La bordure ouest n'est pas connue, elle devait se situer au niveau de l'Altiplano actuel. La bordure est correspond au bouclier Brésilien affleurant actuellement à l'est du pays et sur laquelle se biseaute le Paléozoique. La sédimentation est marine, il s'agit d'une plate-forme carbonatée s'approfondissant au Carbonifère. De nombreuses évidences de diamectites et de figures de resédimentation ont été notées à partir de la fin du Dévonien. Le Trias marque la fin de ces dépôts et se caractérise par une érosion, sans doute due à une phase de rifting avortée. La sédimentation Jurassique et Crétacée est presque toujours continentale et souvent éolienne, il n'y a pas de structuration marquée. Au nord, dans la zone de Madidi, les dépôts du Crétacé terminal (Maestrichian) montrent des intercalations marines riches en matière organique (Fm Flora), alors que son équivalent au centre et au Sud (Fm Cajones) est purement gréseux. Le soulèvement de la cordillère orientale démarre à la fin de l'Oligocène (27 Ma, Sempere et al. , 1990) et le front de compression se déplace ensuite vers l'est. De l'Oligocène terminal au Miocène moyen, la zone subandine actuelle se situe en position d'avant-pays avec une sédimentation restreinte et ne commence à se structurer qu'au Miocène supérieur (11 Ma). Les épais dépôts dans le bassin d'avant-pays ainsi que dans les bassins intramontagneux de type piggyback s'étendent du Miocène à l'Actuel. Bien que continentaux ils ont pu être datés par des tufs. Tous les pièges connus sont structuraux et liés à la déformation actuelle. La roche mère classique de la Bolivie est le Dévonien moyen, formation Tequeje au nord, Limoncito au centre et Los Monos au sud mais d'autres intervalles sont, localement, très importants. Madre De Dios Dans le nord du pays, cinq puits ont été forés dans le bassin de Madre de Dios; ils ont révélé un potentiel exceptionnel pour le Dévonien supérieur, Fm Tomachi, le potentiel pétrolier S2 enregistré atteint parfois 80 mg HC/g et une moyenne de 22 mg HC/g est prouvée sur 250 m. La région n'est pas affectée par la compression andine et il est difficile de définir des structures dans cette zone amazonienne où la végétation est très dense et donc les lignes sismiques coûteuses. Néanmoins le SPI (Source Potential Index) de la zone dépassant les 20 t/m², l'exploration continue bien que les découvertes certifiées ne soient pas encore économiquement importantes. Sub Andin Nord Dans le Sub Andin Nord, la richesse du Dévonien supérieur n'est pas prouvée mais le Dévonien moyen contient un potentiel moyen (S1+S2 initial de 3 mg HC/g) sur environ 800 m. Dans le centre de cette zone, 2 puits ont été forés, Lliquimuni et Tacuaral, qui n'ont pas atteint leurs objectifs du fait de la complexité des structures mais ont prouvé le potentiel de la formation permienne Copacabana. Cette formation est souvent calcaire mais contient dans cette zone environ 300 m d'argile à sa base avec des S2 atteignant 40 mg HC/g et une valeur moyenne de 10 mg HC/g (fig. 9). Ce faciès riche en matière organique est relativement local, dans le basin de Madre de Dios ainsi que sur les bords du lac Titicaca, la formation Copacabana est essentiellement calcaire. Le Silurien n'existe pas au nord, ou est très mince, mais il s'épaissit rapidement vers le sud et son potentiel doit être pris en compte pour la zone d'Isoboro. L'épaisseur des argiles y dépasse 500 m et le potentiel initial est de l'ordre de 6 mg HC/g. Au sud du Sub Andin Nord, la formation Copacabana perd ses qualités de roche mère et les seules roches mères sont le Dévonien et le Silurien. Dans la zone de Madidi, le Crétacé peut aussi avoir ponctuellement une influence, les HI de la formation Flora sont très élevés (plus de 700) et les S2 enregistrés atteignent 17 mg HC/g mais ces argiles sont peu épaisses (environ 50 m) et sont plutôt vues comme une couverture au dessus des réservoirs Jurassique du Beu. Globalement toute la zone du Sub Andin nord possède un SPI de plus de 10 t/m² qui pourrait même être plus élevé si le faciès riche en matière organique du nord s'étend jusqu'au Sub Andin. Il faut noter que cette roche mère avait été initialement considérée comme Carbonifère inférieur (Fm Retama) et qu'il règne une certaine confusion dans les noms utilisés qui, selon les auteurs, sont basés sur des faciès lithologiques ou des limites d'étages établies sur des données de palynologie. D'excellentes, quoique éparses, analyses sur des roches mères Dévonien supérieur à Carbonifère inférieur dans les zones de Madidi et Lliquimuni permettent d'être optimiste sur la présence d'un intervalle plus riche que la moyenne du Dévonien. Centre Dans la zone du Boomerang et du Sub Andin central, la base du Dévonien présente un potentiel correct (S2 moyen de l'ordre de 6 mg HC/g sur une centaine de mètres) et l'ensemble des argiles dévoniennes est roche mère avec un potentiel médiocre (fig. 10). La série peut être très épaisse au sud et s'amincit au nord du fait du biseau du bassin paléozoïque. La géométrie du coude des Andes (Boomerang) est d'ailleurs déterminée par la présence de ce biseau majeur (amincissement de plus de 2000 m des dépôts paléozoïques). Le Silurien possède dans cette zone un potentiel meilleur qu'au nord et au sud avec des COT allant jusqu'à 5%. Le potentiel de chaque structure est fonction de sa position par rapport à ce biseau qui limite l'existence des roches mères et des réservoirs. Sud Dans le Sub Andin Sud, la série paléozoïque est complète (fig. 2) et n'a que très peu été érodée au Trias. Le potentiel du Silurien paraît plus faible que dans la zone centrale. Étant mature avant la fin du Paléozoïque il ne participe vraisemblablement pas au système pétrolier actuel. L'ensemble des argiles du Dévonien, formations Santa Rosa, Icla, Humampampa, Los Monos et Iquiri possède des qualités de roche mère similaires mais le pourcentage sable/argile varie selon les formations (fig. 12). Au total c'est la formation Los Monos, épaisse de 800 m dont la moitié sont des argiles, qui est quantitativement la roche mère la plus importante. Comme ce niveau est aussi un niveau de décollement, il arrive que l'épaisseur de la Fm. Los Monos dépassent les 1 500 m dans les anticlinaux, comme par exemple celui de Camiri (fig. 14). Tous les échantillons provenant de cette zone sont matures à overmatures et le potentiel initial n'est donc pas très bien défini. Un S2 moyen de 5 mg HC/g pour les argiles dévoniennes paraît réaliste, ce qui conduit à un SPI de 5 t/m² compte tenu des épaisseurs connues. Les réservoirs de cette zone se situent dans les sables du Dévonien ainsi que les grès du Carbonifère. Cette zone a été très explorée, 350 puits d'exploration; la plupart des anticlinaux ont montrés des indices d'hydrocarbures, ou même produisent. En terme de réserves, les champs sont de taille limitée, le plus grand de la zone a été Camiri avec une production cumulée depuis sa découverte dans les années 20 de 50 Mb. Il n'a pas encore été définitivement expliqué si ces relativement faibles réserves venaient de la médiocre qualité des roches mères ou de problèmes structuraux qui limiteraient la taille des réservoirs. De même, la grande quantité de gaz trouvée alors que les roches mères sont marines et réputées à huile reste à étudier. Une possibilité serait que les HC lourds générés initialement dans la roche mère n'aient pas été expulsés du fait d'un manque de charge et que la migration ne commence que quand des produits plus légers sont formés. Il en résulte un GOR anormalement élevé. A l'appui de cette hypothèse on enregistre souvent des surpressions (Perez, 1994) dans les argiles roche mère de la formation Los Monos quand elle est dans la fenêtre à huile. Avant pays La zone du Chaco a été assez peu forée, 12 puits sur le haut de Izozog dans les années 70 et 5 sur le bord est du bassin. Ces derniers n'ont pas rencontré de réservoirs et ont été secs bien que les données géochimiques montrent que le potentiel pétrolier du Dévonien et du Silurien reste le même que plus à l'ouest (fig. 11). De façon générale, dans la zone subandine, c'est la zone la moins prospective qui a pour l'instant été le plus forée. Le Sub Andin Nord et la cuenca Madre de Dios restent à explorer et présentent d'un strict point de vue du SPI, un excellent potentiel. Cette étude permet d'être optimiste quant à l'avenir pétrolier de la Bolivie.

Natural dihydrogen (H2) exploration is now active in various countries, but tools and workflows that help to characterize prospective zones are still poorly defined. This review paper is dedicated to share our experience in characterizing H2 plays based on exploration efforts carried out in many countries in Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Oceania between 2017 and 2023. We decided to focus on onshore exploration where three main reactions are generating H2: (i) redox reactions between Fe2+ and H2O, (ii) radiolysis of water and, (iii) organic late maturation where H2 comes from hydrocarbons. This leads to classify the H2 generating rocks (H2_GR) into four types that seem us the more likely to be of economic interest: basic and ultrabasic rocks of oceanic/mantellic affinity (H2_GR1), iron-rich bearing sedimentary and intrusive rocks, (H2_GR2), radioactive continental rocks (H2_GR3) and organic matter-rich rocks (H2_GR4). For the pre-fieldwork, the workflow aims to target new promising areas for H2 exploration. Cross-referencing the presence of H2_GR in the basement, classical geological-hydrodynamic features (fault, water source), and already-known H2 occurrences at the surface remain essential but should be accompanied by remote sensing analyses to detect possible H2 occurrences. For the fieldwork, the focus is made on gas and rocks. A discussion is led concerning the importance of punctual measurements and long-term monitoring of gas seepages, that allow to conclude on dynamics of H2 leakage from depth through space and time. For the post-fieldwork, we present the most useful analytical tools to characterize H2 gas seepages and the suspected H2_GR. The critical parameters to estimate the H2 potential of a rock are the content in Fe2+/Fetot (H2_GR1 and H2_GR2), the content of radioactive elements U, Th, K (H2_GR3), and the total organic content (H2_GR4). The hydrogen exploration is in its infancy and all the profession is attempting to define an automated and fast workflow. We are still far away from it due to a lack of data, yet this review presents a practical guide based on the current knowledge.

The Asal–Ghoubbet active rift in the Republic of Djibouti is a site of interest for geothermal energy and natural hydrogen, and previous studies have indicated that dihydrogen (H2) emanates from this rift. However, the well-known serpentinization reaction does not appear to be the main mechanism generating H2 at this site. Rather, the H2 is generated as follows: (1) by alteration of basaltic lava at depth via reaction with seawater flowing from Ghoubbet Bay towards Lake Asal; (2) by simple degassing of the volcanic chamber located a few kilometers below the Fiale Caldera in the rift axis; or (3) as a result of pyritization processes via the oxidation of H2S. Study of microorganisms did not indicate any production or consumption of H2, CO2, or CH4; therefore, it is unlikely that microorganisms affected H2 gas contents measured at the surface. However, air contamination at fumaroles is typically considerable and may limit interpretation of such processes. Drill cuttings from the Fiale 1 (F1) and Gale le Goma 1 (Glc1) wells (located on the inner and outer rift margins, respectively) were analyzed to determine where H2 is generated. Total rock analyses indicated distinct zones at depths of 464 m and 280 m for F1 and Glc1, respectively, representing the boundary between the Asal and Stratoïd Basalts. 57Fe Mössbauer analyses show a decrease in the percentage of Fe3+ at depth, indicating that Fe2+-rich minerals, particularly in the Stratoïd Basalts, may be a source of H2. Based on well data from the rift center and the outer rift margin, it is evident that H2 is present at the surface in the rift axis and that this area offers good remnant potential because of the presence of Fe-rich chlorite. Conversely, few H2 emissions were measured at the surface on the outer rift margins, although well data showed some H2 (∼0.25%) at depth. The presence of a cap rock in the rift axis has not yet been proven; however, the high loss on ignition and the mineralogy in well Glc1 may indicate that the rocks are sufficiently altered into clays to offer potential as a H2 seal. If so, the rift margins would offer greater exploration potential than the rift center.
