Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. The recent GRB 221009A event, identified as the brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected, provides a unique opportunity to investigate hadronic emissions involving neutrinos. The KM3NeT undersea neutrino detectors participated in the worldwide follow-up effort triggered by the event, searching for neutrino events. In this letter, we summarize subsequent searches, in a wide energy range from MeV up to a few PeVs. No neutrino events are found in any of the searches performed. Abstract

In this paper, we describe the creation in Universal Dependencies of a treebank for Dante's Comedy, the first syntactically annotated text for Old Italian following a dependency-based schema. We detail the phase of treebanking the first part of the Comedy, the Inferno, and we describe some annotation issues. Then, we perform an evaluation of automated dependency parsing with models trained on the currently available annotated portion of the text.

Abstract

Athletic performance is influenced by many factors such as the environment, diet, training and endurance or speed in physical effort and by genetic predisposition. Just a few studies have analyzed the impact of genotypes on physical performance in rugby. The aim of this study was to verify the modulation of genetic influence on rugby-specific physical performance. Twenty-seven elite rugby union players were involved in the study during the in-season phase. Molecular genotyping was performed for: angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE rs4646994), alfa-actinin-3 (ACTN3 rs1815739) and monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1 rs1049434) and their variants. Lean mass index (from skinfolds), lower-limb explosive power (countermovement jump), agility (505), speed (20 m), maximal aerobic power (Yo-yo intermittent recovery test level 1) and repeated sprint ability (12 × 20 m) were evaluated. In our rugby union players ACE and ACTN3 variants did not show any influence on athletic performance. MCT1 analysis showed that TT-variant players had the highest peak vertical power (p = 0.037) while the ones with the AA genotype were the fastest in both agility and sprint tests (p = 0.006 and p = 0.012, respectively). Considering the T-dominant model, the AA genotype remains the fastest in both tests (agility: p = 0.013, speed: p = 0.017). Only the MCT1 rs1049434 A allele seems to be advantageous for elite rugby union players, particularly when power and speed are required

Abstract

Nutrire le radici, la memoria, e collocarsi entro una dimensione di storicità personale, ma anche familiare e collettiva, sono temi fondanti: permettono di accompagnare percorsi di elaborazione identitaria complessa e a partire da essi si possono aprire sguardi, traiettorie sul divenire della persona. Il rapporto intergenerazionale svolge un ruolo rilevante nei percorsi di crescita. Nel caso delle giovani generazioni dell’immigrazione, però, il radicamento e la relazione con la generazione anziana assumono configurazioni peculiari e si collocano entro un percorso di sintesi identitaria articolato, che si muove tra appartenenze culturali plurali. Sorgono allora interrogativi sui significati che ragazze e ragazzi con background migratorio attribuiscono al rapporto intergenerazionale con i nonni, come lo vivano e come possano mettere radici nella cultura che appartiene a tutta la loro famiglia; e ancora, su come possano costruire senso di appartenenza, radicarsi nella comunità locale e se in essa abbiano la possibilità di sperimentare relazioni intergenerazionali significative. A partire dal contesto profondamente multiculturale della città di Brescia, la ricerca intende dare voce alle esperienze di ragazze e ragazzi preadolescenti con storia migratoria, attraverso degli studi di caso e tramite un approccio partecipativo. Nelle interviste esplorative realizzate con alcuni testimoni privilegiati, referenti dei servizi del territorio, sono emersi nuclei tematici rilevanti: essi sono e saranno poi approfonditi a partire dalle voci dei ragazzi stessi. The relationship between older and younger immigrant generations sits within a peculiar path aimed at elaborating a complex identity that speaks of multiple cultural belonging. The research questions focus on preteens with a history of migration and their cross-generational relationships. Can they bond with their family culture through the relationships with grandparents? Can these be a driving force for developing strong ties and a sense of belonging to the local community? The research takes place in Brescia (Italy), a highly multicultural context. Through case studies and a participatory approach, the aim is to give voice to the experiences of preteens with migratory background. During the exploratory interviews with representatives from a range of areas including social services, educational and religious institutions, some relevant core themes emerged. These core themes are and will be further explored leveraging the preteens perspective as a starting point. The research plans to identify cases of community and intergenerational practices in mainstream education, with an intercultural perspective. Furthermore, it aims to open educational pathways starting from these practices.

Abstract

This paper describes the process of building UDante, a corpus that collects the Latin texts of Dante Alighieri enhanced with syntactic annotation according to the criteria established by the Universal Dependencies initiative. After introducing the annotation style adopted, the article details the phases of development of UDante, particularly focusing on the process of conversion of the data format, as well as on their manual annotation. The inclusion of UDante in the LiLa knowledge base, which makes the corpus interoperable with other linguistic resources for Latin, is then described. Finally, some examples of queries run on UDante are presented, to show how the corpus can support the creation of the Vocabolario Dantesco Latino.

Abstract

Il contributo approfondisce, il ruolo del pensiero creativo nell’ambito dell’educazione alle emergenze per affrontare le situazioni problematiche e di incertezza con maggiore flessibilità e resilienza. Viene presentato il Test della personalità creativa (TCD-As version), nella sua versione validata nel contesto nazionale attraverso l’analisi fattoriale confermativa. Lo strumento, che può essere utilizzato nei contesti formativi con bambini e ragazzi di età compresa tra i 6 e i 18 anni, è orientato a rilevare la capacità di essere aperti a nuove esperienze cognitive e di ricercare e accettare il conflitto cognitivo, sviluppando così un atteggiamento orientato alla curiosità. Gli esiti della indagine confermano l’importanza di arricchire il curricolo, dedicando specifica attenzione all’esplorazione attiva e all’esperienza estetica e di potenziare l’“Orientamento alla Curiosità”, introducendo, in modo consapevole, strumenti di rilevazione affidabili e facili da applicare. The contribution explores the role of creative thinking in the context emergency education to deal with problematic situations and uncertainty with greater flexibility and resilience. He comes presented the Test of the creative personality (TCD-As version), in its version validated in the national context through factor analysis confirmatory. The tool, which can be used in educational contexts with children and young people aged between 6 and the 18 years old, is oriented to detect the ability to be open to new ones cognitive experiences and to seek and accept cognitive conflict, thus developing an attitude oriented towards curiosity. The results of the survey confirm the importance of enriching the curriculum, dedicating specific attention to active exploration and experience aesthetics and to enhance the "Orientation to Curiosity", introducing, in a conscious way, reliable detection tools and easy to apply.

Abstract

This paper1 presents the early stages of the development of a new treebank containing all of Dante Alighieri’s Latin works. In particular, it describes the conversion of the original TEI-XML files to CoNLL-U, the creation of a gold standard, the process of training four annotators and the evaluation of the syntactic annotation in terms of inter-annotator agreement and LA, UAS and LAS. The aim is to release a new resource, in view of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death, which can support the development of the Vocabolario Dantesco.

Abstract

Background: Different studies suggest that fulvestrant 500 mg every 28 days (HD-FUL) could be an active treatment in HR+ advanced breast cancer (ABC) patients even treated with aromatase inhibitors in the adjuvant setting. The aim of this analysis is to describe the outcome of ABC patients treated with HD-FUL as first-line treatment in terms of median duration of treatment and the overall response rate in a real-world setting. Methods: For the purpose of the present analysis, we considered two data sets of HR+ ABC patients collected in Italy between 2012 and 2015 (EVA and GIM-13 AMBRA studies). Results: Eighty-one and 91 patients have been identified from the two data sets. The median age was 63 years (range 35-82) for the EVA and 57.8 years (range 35.0-82.3) for the AMBRA patients. ORRs were 23.5 and 24.3% in the whole population, 26.9% in the patients with bone only, and 21.8 and 21.4% in those with visceral metastases. The median duration of HD-FUL was 11.6 months (range 1-48) and 12.4 months (range 2.9-70.0) in the two data sets, respectively. Conclusion: These data suggest that HD-FUL should still continue to play a significant role as first-line therapy in HR+ ABC patients.

Abstract

Background Reproducible, high-quality surgery is a key point in the management of cancer patients. Quality indicators for surgical treatment of melanoma has been presented with benchmarks but data on morbidity are still limited. This study presents the quality indicators on morbidity after surgical treatment for non-metastatic skin melanoma in an Italian registry. Methods Data were extracted from the Central National Melanoma Registry (CNMR) promoted by the Italian Melanoma Intergroup (IMI). All surgical procedures (WE, SNLB or LFND) for non-metastatic skin melanoma between January 2011 and February 2017 were evaluated for inclusion in the study. Only centers with adequate completeness of information (> 80%) were included in the study. Short-term complications (wound infection, dehiscence, skin graft failure and seroma) were investigated. Results Wound infection rate was 1.1% (0.4 to 2.7%) in WE, 1.3% (0.7 to 2.5%) in SLNB and 4.1% (2.1 to 8.0%) in LFND. Wound dehiscence rate was 2.0% (0.8 to 5.1%) in WE, 0.9% (0.2 to 3.0%) in SLNB and 2.8% (0.9 to 8.6%) in LFND. Seroma rate was 4.2% (1.5 to 11.1%) in SLNB and 15.1% (4.6 to 39.9%) in LFND. Unreliable information was found on skin graft failure. Conclusions Our findings contribute to available literature in setting up the recommended standards for melanoma centers, thus improving the quality of surgery offered to patients. A consensus on the core issues around surgical morbidity is needed to provide practical guidance on morbidity prevention and management.

Abstract

This open-label multicentre trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of oral dimethyl fumarate (DMF) in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in real-life clinical practice over 52 weeks. Disease severity and improvement were assessed using the psoriasis area severity index (PASI), body surface area (BSA) affected, and Physician Global Assessment (PGA). Quality of life (QoL) was assessed using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) questionnaire. The visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to quantify pruritus and measure treatment satisfaction. A total of 141 patients were included, being 66.7% male, aged 49.1 ± 14.7 years and with disease duration of 16 ± 12.1 years. After 52 weeks, mean PASI decreased from 15.9 ± 6.8 to 1.5 ± 2 and 87.7%, 56.9% and 24.6% of patients achieved PASI 75/90/100 response, respectively. BSA decreased from 26.5 ± 14.8% to 2.7 ± 3.5% at 52 weeks, and 81.5% of patients had a PGA 0-1. DLQI scores decreased from 9.4 ± 6.4 to 2.1 ± 3.3, and VAS of pruritus decreased from 53 ± 28.4 to 19.1 ± 26.2 at Week 52. VAS for treatment satisfaction was 79.4 ± 29.4 at Week 52. A total of 34.2% of patients had an AE leading to permanent discontinuation. These findings show that DMF can significantly improve indices of disease severity, pruritus and QoL, with high levels of patient satisfaction and similar safety profile to other fumarates.

Abstract

Background: Although neurovascular conflict (NVC) is the most widely accepted cause of trigeminal neuralgia (TN), few articles have analyzed molecular and biochemical mechanisms underlying TN. In the present study, we dosed neuron-specific enolase (NSE) on serum and CSF samples of 20 patients submitted to microvascular decompression (MVD) and correlated these findings with the type of NVC. Methods: Blood samples were obtained preoperatively and 48 h after MVD. CSF from trigeminal cistern was intraoperatively obtained. NSE levels were measured using the Diasorin kit (LIAISON®NSE). NVC was classified as “contact” or “trigeminal nerve distortion/indentation” or “trigeminal root atrophy” based on MRI and intraoperative findings. Clinical outcome was measured by acute pain relief (APR) and Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) scale at last available follow-up (FU; 6.40 ± 5.38 months). Results: APR was obtained in all patients. A statistically significant BNI reduction was obtained at latest FU (p < 0.0001). Serum NSE levels significantly decreased following MVD (from 12.15 ± 3.02 ng/mL to 8.95 ± 2.83 ng/mL, p = 0.001). The mean CSF NSE value was 48.94 ng/mL, and the mean CSF/serum NSE rate was 4.18 with a strong correlation between these two variables (p = 0.0008). CSF NSE level in “trigeminal root atrophy” group was significantly higher compared to “contact” (p = 0.0045) and “distortion/indentation” (p = 0.010) groups. Conclusion: NSE levels seem to be related to the etiopathology and severity of NVC. A significant reduction of serum NSE levels could be related to the resolution of the NVC and clinical TN improvement.

Abstract

Background: Molecular mechanisms underlying trigeminal neuralgia (TN) have been poorly understood. Recently, different biomarkers have been studied in several chronic neuropathic diseases or in neuronal damage, but their role in TN has not yet been investigated. Here, we firstly analyzed the serum levels of the neuron-specific enolase (NSE) (as an index of neuronal tissue damage) in TN patients submitted to surgical treatment. Different cytokines and interleukins related to inflammation were also studied. Methods: Blood samples from 40 patients were prospectively collected preoperatively and after the surgical procedure, namely microvascular decompression (MVD) and percutaneous balloon compression (PBC). Serum levels of uric acid, NSE, ferritin, CRP, IL-2R, and IL-6 were studied. The acute pain relief (APR) and the pre- and postoperative BNI were used to evaluate the clinical outcome. Results: Overall, we obtained an APR in 87.5% of patients and a significant reduction of BNI after surgery (p < 0.0001). We observed a significant reduction of postoperative NSE values in the group of patients undergoing MVD (p = 0.0055) and a significant increase of postoperative NSE values in patients undergoing PBC (p < 0.05). Furthermore, in the group of patients undergoing MVD, we found a significant postoperative increase of CRP (p < 0.0001), ferritin (p = 0.001), and IL-6 (p = 0.01) values. The only patient who did not respond to MVD had NSE levels unchanged. Conclusion: Our results suggest the hypothesis that TN would be related to the neural damage instead of the systemic inflammatory status and indicate NSE as a possible biomarker of response in patients submitted to MVD.

Abstract

Background: Molecular mechanisms underlying trigeminal neuralgia (TN) have been poorly understood. Recently, different biomarkers have been studied in several chronic neuropathic diseases or in neuronal damage, but their role in TN has not yet been investigated. Here, we firstly analyzed the serum levels of the neuron-specific enolase (NSE) (as an index of neuronal tissue damage) in TN patients submitted to surgical treatment. Different cytokines and interleukins related to inflammation were also studied. Methods: Blood samples from 40 patients were prospectively collected preoperatively and after the surgical procedure, namely microvascular decompression (MVD) and percutaneous balloon compression (PBC). Serum levels of uric acid, NSE, ferritin, CRP, IL-2R, and IL-6 were studied. The acute pain relief (APR) and the pre- and postoperative BNI were used to evaluate the clinical outcome. Results: Overall, we obtained an APR in 87.5% of patients and a significant reduction of BNI after surgery (p < 0.0001). We observed a significant reduction of postoperative NSE values in the group of patients undergoing MVD (p = 0.0055) and a significant increase of postoperative NSE values in patients undergoing PBC (p < 0.05). Furthermore, in the group of patients undergoing MVD, we found a significant postoperative increase of CRP (p < 0.0001), ferritin (p = 0.001), and IL-6 (p = 0.01) values. The only patient who did not respond to MVD had NSE levels unchanged. Conclusion: Our results suggest the hypothesis that TN would be related to the neural damage instead of the systemic inflammatory status and indicate NSE as a possible biomarker of response in patients submitted to MVD.

30. Dispersione scolastica e giustizia sociale. Uno studio di caso nel campo delle scuole popolari

Abstract

La ricerca muove da una riflessione sulle cause della dispersione scolastica per interrogarsi su come intervenire efficacemente a livello strutturale per prevenire situazioni di rischio o disagio educativo in minori tra i 14 e i 16 anni. L’articolo si apre presentando il fenomeno in questione e passando in rassegna la principale letteratura e normativa di riferimento, focalizzandosi sul tema delle variabili di contesto non tenute debitamente in conto. Il framework teorico emergente è la Social Justice Education di ascendenza critica e radicale, e in particolare la Social Justice nella formazione degli insegnanti, che porta alla luce la questione delle disuguaglianze e disparità socio-educative come prodotto di un paradigma pedagogico dominante, imperniato su una matrice economica e industriale. Il discorso delinea quindi una nuova prospettiva di equità e giustizia sociale, orientata verso una risemantizzazione del concetto di “dispersione”, che può essere ben interpretata a partire dalle pratiche educative e didattiche dell’educazione popolare. L’articolo presenta dunque un intrinsic case study incentrato sulla Scuola Popolare “Antonia Vita” di Monza, realizzato durante l’anno scolastico 2020/2021, che a sua volta è stato articolato in due studi distinti ma complementari: un primo studio di carattere prettamente conoscitivo, che ha adottato la metodologia di ricerca della Grounded Theory socio-costruttivista declinata secondo la critical inquiry; e un secondo di Ricerca-Azione, che ha incluso sia un percorso di Ricerca-Formazione insieme con l’équipe educativa sia due Ricerche-Intervento (2 laboratori di scrittura e robotica educativa). La raccolta dei dati è terminata a settembre 2021 e l’analisi è attualmente in corso.

Abstract

To improve the quality of teachers' professional development paths in the school context, peer to peer training activities take on a strategic role (Heilbronn et al. 2002; Ingersoll & Strong, 2011; Kent, Green & Feldman, 2012). In Italy, in order to manage the induction phase of newly hired teachers, a strategic figure was recently recognized: the tutor of the newly hired teacher; tutors manage typical functions of middle management (Law 107/2015). The tutor has the task of carrying out tutoring actions to support novice teachers in the phases of insertion into the school community and for this reason his professional practices are strategic for the in-service training of the new employee (Bleach, 2013; Kemmis et al., 2014; Mangione et al., 2016; Moretti, 2019). In particular, teachers that have the role of tutor favor the active participation of the novice and contributes to improving their professional profile and teaching practices through mutual observation activities in the classroom. The recognition of the figure of “tutor of newly hired teachers” poses in Italy today the problem of identifying national training courses and forms of professional recognition of the role played (Fiorucci & Moretti, 2019). The contribution presents the results of a professional development path aimed at tutors of newly hired teachers that was designed for three consecutive years by Roma Tre University in collaboration with the Regional Education Office for Lazio. 2390 tutor of the new hires were involved in the training with the aim of consolidating knowledge and developing the skills related to the envisaged tutoring activities (D.M. 850/2015). As part of the training course, an exploratory survey was carried out to detect useful information to further define the profile of the tutor teachers. A questionnaire consisting of 24 questions was used as a data collection tool; this tool was integrated during the course by other data collection tools relating to the tutors' professional practices. The use of the questionnaire made it possible to deepen the opinion of the tutors on some issues relating to their role in relation to teaching, planning and evaluating educational activities, as well as the skills already possessed, training needs and aspects positive or critical about the personal experience of peer mentoring. A section of the questionnaire was dedicated to the tutor teachers of the kindergarten in order to also investigate with them how they interpret the function of the tutor of new hires in the field of services for children. The results of the research confirm the importance of the tutor in the Italian school context. Peer to peer training is considered by teachers to be important for a conscious exercise of their profession and for initiating shared reflection paths with colleagues. The tutors of the new hires who participated in the professional development path highlight how the training initiative was effective in consolidating knowledge and developing further skills. The answers provided by them highlighting the presence of both quality professional practices and practices that need to be reflected further under the supervision of experts.

Abstract

Background The BOLERO-2 trial reported efficacy and safety of Everolimus (EVE) and Exemestane (EXE) combination in HR+ advanced breast cancer (ABC) patients. The BALLET trial further evaluated the safety of EVE-EXE in HR+ ABC patients, without reporting efficacy data. Aim of the EVA real-life study was to collect data of efficacy and safety of EVE-EXE combination in the clinical setting, as well as exploring efficacy according to EVE Dose-Intensity (DI) and to previous treatment with Fulvestrant. Patients and methods This study aimed to describe the outcome of ABC pts treated with EVE-EXE combination in terms of median duration of EVE treatment and ORR in a real-life setting. Results From July 2013 to December 2015, the EVA study enrolled 404 pts. Median age was 61 years (33–83). Main metastatic sites were: bone (69.1%), soft tissue (34.7%) and viscera (33.2%). Median number of previous treatments was 2 (1–7). 43.3% of the pts had received Fulvestrant. Median exposure to EVE was 31.0 weeks (15.4–58.3) in the whole population. No difference was observed in terms of EVE exposure duration according to DI (p for trend = 0.27) or type of previous treatments (p = 0.33). ORR and Disease Control Rate (DCR) were observed in 31.6% and 60.7% of the patients, respectively, with the lowest ORRs confined in CHT pre-treated patients or in those who received the lowest DI of EVE. Grade 3-4 adverse events (AEs) were reported in 37.9% of the patients. Main AEs were: stomatitis (11.2%), non-infectious pneumonitis - NIP (3.8%), anaemia (3.8%) and fatigue (3.2%). Conclusions The EVA study provided new insights in the use of EVE-EVE combination in HR+ ABC pts many years after the publication of the pivotal trial. The combination is safe and the best response could be obtained in patients receiving the full dose of EVE and/or after hormone-therapy as Fulvestrant in ABC.
