Evidence from animal models of PCOS (prenatally androgenized sheep) has suggested that treatment with insulin sensitizers, but not antiandrogens, can reduce increases in ROS.Materials and methods: In the present study, we investigated the effects of neonatal treatment with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist (leuprolide acetate) on prenatally androgenized sheep with testosterone propionate to determine its impact on oxidative stress molecules (ferric reducing antioxidant power [FRAP], advanced oxidation protein product [AOPP], nitric oxide [NOx], albumin) at 8, 12, and 18 months of age.Results: Androgenized ewes (but not leuprolide-treated ewes) showed reduced total cholesterol levels associated with a decrease in the ratio of visceral to subcutaneous adiposity (adjusted to abdominal area) as determined by computed tomography. In androgenized ewes at 12 months of age, an increase in subcutaneous fat and relative decrease in the visceral fat compartment did not affect the expression of REDOX markers. At 18 months of age, however, the levels of NOx metabolites decreased in androgenized animals, but remained close to normal in ewes subjected to neonatal treatment with leuprolide acetate. Other oxidative stress parameters (FRAP, AOPP, albumin) did not vary among groups.Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that the GnRH agonist leuprolide (as a single dose after birth) had weak effects on markers of the oxidative stress balance. However, there is scarce information about redox markers in the blood of androgenized animal models. Here, we evaluated the serum/plasma oxidative stress marker and metabolic parameter characteristics of prenatal (PreN) and postnatal (PostN) androgenized rat models of PCOS. Materials and methods: For PreN androgenization (n=8), 2.5 mg of testosterone propionate was subcutaneously administered to dams at embryonic days 16, 17, and 18, whereas PostN androgenization (n=7) was accomplished by subcutaneously injecting 1.25 mg of testosterone propionate to animals at PostN day 5. A unique control group (n=8) was constituted for comparison. Results: Our results indicate that PostN group rats exhibited particular modifications in the oxidative stress marker, an increased plasma ferric-reducing ability of plasma, and an increased antioxidant capacity reflected by higher albumin serum levels. PostN animals also presented increased total cholesterol and triglyceride–glucose levels, suggesting severe metabolic disarrangement. Conclusion: Study findings indicate that changes in oxidative stress could be promoted by testosterone propionate exposure after birth, which is likely associated with anovulation and/or lipid disarrangement. Introduction: Estimating patient risk before heart surgery (HS) is crucial. Perioperative inflammation is associated with several complications and mortality. This study investigated blood cell count inflammatory indices (BCCII) to predict risks, including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), derivate NLR (DNLR), neutrophil-to-platelet-lymphocyte ratio (NLPR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), Systemic Inflammatory Index (SII), Systemic Inflammatory Reaction Index (SIRI), and Aggregate Index of Systemic Inflammation (AISI)., Methods: Data from a cohort of patients undergoing on-pump HS at a single center in Brazil were retrospectively analyzed. Data were obtained from medical records and a laboratory analyzer, and SPSS version 20.0 was used for index calculations and statistical analyses., Results: In total, 444 surgeries were performed, and 40 in-hospital deaths occurred. Except for PLR, all other indexes were independent predictors of death after multivariate adjustment (all p < 0.05). Discrimination performance was absent for PLR and AISI, and NLR, NLPR, and DNLR demonstrated the best area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC > 0.7; all p < 0.0001). For survivors (n = 404), all indexes exhibited a correlation with the length of hospital stay (all p < 0.03), and NLR, NLPR, and DNLR were predictors (p < 0.026) of poor operative outcomes (acute myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular attack, cardiac arrest, low cardiac output, prolonged mechanical ventilation, renal failure, and sepsis)., Conclusions: All BCCII scores were associated with length of hospital stay. Apart from PLR, all indexes were independent predictors of in-hospital mortality. Accuracy was highest for NLR, NLPR, and DNLR; for survivors, these three factors were good predictors of poor operative outcomes., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by a steady decline in kidney function and affects roughly 10% of the world's population. This review focuses on the critical function of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling in CKD, specifically how it influences both protective and pathogenic processes in the kidney. cAMP, a critical secondary messenger, controls a variety of cellular functions, including transcription, metabolism, mitochondrial homeostasis, cell proliferation, and apoptosis. Its compartmentalization inside cellular microdomains ensures accurate signaling. In kidney physiology, cAMP is required for hormone-regulated activities, particularly in the collecting duct, where it promotes water reabsorption through vasopressin signaling. Several illnesses, including Fabry disease, renal cell carcinoma, nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, Bartter syndrome, Liddle syndrome, diabetic nephropathy, autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, and renal tubular acidosis, have been linked to dysfunction in the cAMP system. Both cAMP analogs and phosphodiesterase inhibitors have the potential to improve kidney function and reduce kidney damage. Future research should focus on developing targeted PDE inhibitors for the treatment of CKD.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS) generating neuropathic pain and anxiety. Primary progressive MS (PPMS) is the most disabling clinical form, and the patients present an intense neurodegenerative process. In this context, the advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) are oxidized compounds and their accumulation in plasma has been related to clinical disability in MS patients. However, the involvement of AOPPs in neuropathic pain- and anxiety-like symptoms was not previously evaluated. To assess this, female mice C57BL/6J were used to induce progressive experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (PMS-EAE). Clinical score, weight, strength of plantar pressure, rotarod test, mechanical allodynia, and cold hypersensitivity were evaluated before induction (baseline) and on days 7 th , 10 th , and 14 th post-immunization. We assessed nest building, open field, and elevated plus-maze tests 13 days post-immunization. Animals were killed at 14 days post-immunization; then, AOPPs levels, NADPH oxidase, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity were measured in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and spinal cord samples. The clinical score increased 14 th post-immunization without changes in weight and mobility. Reduced paw strength, mechanical allodynia, and cold allodynia increased in the PMS-EAE animals. PMS-EAE mice showed spontaneous nociception and anxiety-like behavior. AOPPs concentration, NADPH oxidase, and MPO activity increase in CNS structures. Multivariate analyses indicated that the rise of AOPPs levels, NADPH oxidase, and MPO activity influenced the clinical score and cold allodynia. The early detection of gynecological cancers, which is critical for improving patient survival rates, is challenging because of the vague early symptoms and the diagnostic limitations of current approaches. This comprehensive review delves into the game-changing potential of infrared (IR) spectroscopy, a noninvasive technology used to transform the landscape of cancer diagnosis in gynecology. By collecting the distinctive vibrational frequencies of chemical bonds inside tissue samples, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy provides a 'molecular fingerprint' that outperforms existing diagnostic approaches. We highlight significant advances in this field, particularly the identification of discrete biomarker bands in the mid- and near-IR spectra. Proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids exhibited different absorption patterns. These spectral signatures not only serve to distinguish between malignant and benign diseases, but also provide additional information regarding the cellular changes associated with cancer. To underscore the practical consequences of these findings, we examined studies in which IR spectroscopy demonstrated exceptional diagnostic accuracy. This review supports the use of IR spectroscopy in normal clinical practice, emphasizing its capacity to detect and comprehend the intricate molecular underpinnings of gynecological cancers.

Musculoskeletal pain is a widely experienced public healthcare issue, especially after traumatic muscle injury. Besides, it is a common cause of disability, but this pain remains poorly managed. However, the pathophysiology of traumatic muscle injury-associated pain and inflammation has not been fully elucidated. In this regard, the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) has been studied in inflammatory and painful conditions. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effect of the topical application of a TRPA1 antagonist in a model of traumatic muscle injury in rats. The mechanical trauma model was developed by a single blunt trauma impact on the right gastrocnemius muscle of Wistar male rats (250-350 g). The animals were divided into four groups (Sham/Vehicle; Sham/HC-030031 0.05%; Injury/Vehicle, and Injury/HC-030031 0.05%) and topically treated with a Lanette® N cream base containing a TRPA1 antagonist (HC-030031, 0.05%; 200 mg/muscle) or vehicle (Lanette® N cream base; 200 mg/muscle), which was applied at 2, 6, 12, 24, and 46 h after muscle injury. Furthermore, we evaluated the contribution of the TRPA1 channel on nociceptive, inflammatory, and oxidative parameters. The topical application of TRPA1 antagonist reduced biomarkers of muscle injury (lactate/glucose ratio), spontaneous nociception (rat grimace scale), inflammatory (inflammatory cell infiltration, cytokine levels, myeloperoxidase, and N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase activities) and oxidative (nitrite levels and dichlorofluorescein fluorescence) parameters, and mRNA Trpa1 levels in the muscle tissue. Thus, these results demonstrate that TRPA1 may be a promising anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive target in treating muscle pain after traumatic muscle injury., (© 2023. Background: Evidence has shown that patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease present significant deficits in the control of postural balance when compared to healthy subjects. In view of this, it is pertinent to investigate the effects of different therapeutic strategies used alone or in association with pulmonary rehabilitation with the potential to improve postural balance and other outcomes with clinical significance in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This study will investigate the effects of an 8-week (short-term) multimodal exercise program [inspiratory muscle training (IMT) plus neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)] on postural balance in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease enrolled in a pulmonary rehabilitation program compared to individualized addition of IMT or NMES to pulmonary rehabilitation or standard pulmonary rehabilitation., Methods: This is a randomized, single-blind, 4-parallel-group trial. Forty patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will be included prospectively to this study during a pulmonary rehabilitation program. Patients will be randomly assigned to one of four groups: multimodal exercise program (IMT + NMES + pulmonary rehabilitation group) or (IMT + pulmonary rehabilitation group) or (NMES + pulmonary rehabilitation group) or standard pulmonary rehabilitation group. Patients will receive two sessions per week for 8 weeks. The primary outcome will be static postural balance and secondary outcomes will include as follows: static and dynamic postural balance, fear of falling, muscle strength and endurance (peripheral and respiratory), functional capacity, health-related quality of life, muscle architecture (quadriceps femoris and diaphragm), and laboratory biomarkers., Discussion: This randomized clinical trial will investigate the effects of adding of short-term multimodal exercise program, in addition to pulmonary rehabilitation program, in postural balance in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease enrolled in a pulmonary rehabilitation. Furthermore, this randomized control trial will enable important directions regarding the effectiveness of short-term intervention as part of the need to expand the focus of pulmonary rehabilitation to include balance management in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients which will be generated., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04387318. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the association of anthropometric measurements with endothelial function and arterial stiffness of eutrophic individuals and with overweight., Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with individuals with body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 kg/m 2 and < 30 kg/m 2 , low to intermediate global cardiovascular risk scores, and aged ≥ 18 and < 60 years. We assessed the sociodemographic data, anthropometric variables (body weight, height, circumferences of the waist [WC], neck [NC], hip [HC], sagittal abdominal diameter [SAD], [BMI], waist-to-hip ratio [WHR], and waist-to-height ratio [WHtR]), biochemical parameters (lipid profile and nitric oxide), endothelial function (flow-mediated dilation [FMD], by ultrasound), and arterial stiffness (pulse wave velocity [PWV] and the amplification index [AIx@75] by oscillometry). Thirty-six individuals were included, 18 eutrophic and 18 with overweight, with a mean age of 37.5 ± 10.2 years, mostly at low cardiovascular risk (86.1%), female (80.6%), single (52.8%), employed with formal contracts (44.4%), and with over twelve years of education (88.9%)., Results: The PWV presented positive and moderate correlation with the WC (r = 0.584; P = 0.001), WHR (r = 0.513; P = 0.001), and WHtR (r = 0.590; P = 0.001), and positive and low correlation with the NC (r = 0.372; P = 0.013) and SAD (r = 0.356; P = 0.033). Moreover, no anthropometric parameter presented a correlation with the AIx@75 or the FMD percentage in the total sample., Conclusion: Our findings show that in eutrophic individuals and with overweight the WC, WHR, WHtR, SAD, and NC were positively correlated with the PWV but not to the endothelial function in the overall sample. These are hypothesis-generating findings and they should be replicated in other studies.

Carbamylation is a nonenzymatic post-translational modification observed during the reaction between cyanate and amino acids and/or proteins that may occur during some pathologies such as chronic kidney disease. Evidence suggests that carbamylation may interfere with the quantification of some analytes measured using immunoturbidimetric assays. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory response protein that is commonly quantified through immunoturbidimetry in clinical laboratories. Because the presence of modified proteins in serum can lead to impaired quantification, this study aimed to verify the impact of in vitro carbamylation on the measurement of CRP in a CRP standard solution and serum pool. The samples were incubated with 150 nM, 150 µM, or 150 mM potassium cyanate (KOCN) or 20, 100, or 500 mg/dL urea at 37 °C for 24 h. CRP concentrations were measured using an immunoturbidimetric assay. The results showed a 61%-72% decrease in the CRP detection rate after incubation with KOCN. Incubation with urea resulted in a 0.7%-8% lower CRP detection rate. The results of this study indicate that high concentrations of cyanate can lead to falsely decreased CRP levels, as measured by immunoturbidimetry.

Aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) is the most common toxic mycotoxin that contaminates food. The treatment of its intoxication and the management of contaminations are a constant subject of health agendas worldwide. However, such efforts are not always enough to avoid population intoxication. Our objective was to investigate whether intermittent exposure to AFB 1 would cause any impairment in biochemical and behavioral parameters, intending to simulate an irregular consumption. Male Wistar rats received four AFB 1 administrations (250 μg/kg) by intragastric route separated by a 96-h interval. Toxicity was evaluated using behavioral tests (open field, object recognition, nest construction, marble burying, and splash test), biochemical markers of oxidative stress (cerebral cortex, hippocampus, liver, and kidneys), and plasma parameters of hepatic and renal functions. The intermittent exposure caused no modification in body weight gain as well as in organ weight. Both control and AFB 1 groups presented similar profiles of behavior to all tests performed. Furthermore, AFB 1 administrations alter neither antioxidant defenses nor markers of oxidation in all assayed tissues and in the plasma markers of hepatic and renal functions. Therefore, AFB 1 intermittent administration did not cause its common damage from exposure to this toxicant, which must be avoided, and additional studies are required.

Vassobia breviflora (Sendtn.) Hunz is a plant of the Solanaceae family from South America and there are no apparent studies reported on the biological activity of the hexane extract. The aim of this investigation was to conduct phytochemical analyses using ESI-TOF-MS, while antioxidant activities were evaluated by the following methods 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) 2,2"-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical capture (ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and total oxidant status (TOS). Antimicrobial activities were performed by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and antibiofilm formed. Cytotoxicity was measured by MTT and dsDNA PicoGreen tests, beyond the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) determined by Dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA). The hexane extract showed the presence of 5 (choline, pantothenic acid, calystegine B, lanciphodylactone I, and 15"- cis -zeaxanthin) compounds detected. V. breviflora extract demonstrated reliable results utilizing different antioxidant methods. In antibacterial activity, V. breviflora extract exhibited inhibitory, bactericidal, and antibiofilm action in biofilm-forming bacteria. The hexane extract exhibited cytotoxicity against melanoma, lung cancer, glioblastoma, leukemia, uterine colon, and hepatocarcinoma tumor cells. In addition, all tested strains resulted in increased production of ROS. This plant extract may be considered in future as an alternative for development of new therapeutic options aimed at the treatment of diverse pathologies.

Cancer and infectious diseases are among the leading causes of death in the world. Despite the diverse array of treatments available, challenges posed by resistance, side effects, high costs, and inaccessibility persist. In the Solanaceae plant family, few studies with Vassobia breviflora species relating to biological activity are known, but promising results have emerged. The phytochemicals present in the ethyl acetate fraction were obtained using ESI-MS-QTOF, and the antioxidants assays 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical capture (ABTS), plasma ferric reduction capacity (FRAP), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Cytotoxic activity was evaluated by MTT, Neutral Red, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) released. The production of reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, and purinergic enzymes was also investigated. Antibacterial activity was measured through minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and antibiofilm activity, in addition to genotoxicity in plasmid DNA. Five major masses were identified D-glucopyranose II, allyl disulfide, γ-lactones, pharbilignoside, and one mass was not identified. V. breviflora exhibited relevant antioxidant and cytotoxic activity against the HeLa cell line and enhanced expression effect in modulation of purinergic signaling. Antibacterial activities in the assays in 7 ATCC strains and 8 multidrug-resistant clinical isolates were found. V. breviflora blocked biofilm formation in producing bacteria at the highest concentrations tested. However, there was no plasmid DNA cleavage at the concentrations tested. Data demonstrated that V. breviflora exhibited an antioxidant effect through several methods and proved to be a promising therapeutic alternative for use against tumor cells via purinergic signaling and multidrug-resistant microorganisms, presenting an anti-biofilm effect.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of delivery type (normal or caesarean) on the antioxidant and oxidative capacity of colostrum collected shortly after delivery. A total of 61 parturients were included in the study and divided into two groups: those who underwent vaginal delivery ( n   =   36) and those who underwent elective caesarean section ( n   =   25). Colostrum samples were collected by manual milking up to 48 h post parturition and analysed for thiol groups (-SH), vitamin C, ferric reducing ability (FRAP), nitrate/nitrite oxides (NO x ), and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP). Colostrum levels of -SH ( p   =   0.0042), vitamin C ( p   =   0.0455), and FRAP ( p   =   0.0374) were significantly lower in the vaginal delivery group. The results suggest that vaginal delivery, compared to caesarean section, is associated with lower levels of antioxidants in colostrum and the mode of delivery plays an important role in the composition of antioxidants in maternal colostrum that help protect newborns from oxidative damage.IMPACT STATEMENT What is already known on this subject? Colostrum is the first biological fluid produced by the mother after delivery and is responsible for a child's growth, cognitive development and health. It is known that childbirth can cause oxidative imbalance, and its effects have already been evaluated in maternal and foetal blood, however, there are few studies evaluating the effects of childbirth on colostrum composition. What do the results of this study add? Previously, a study showed that caesarean section caused greater oxidation of colostrum compared to vaginal delivery. Thus, we sought to evaluate other markers (thiol groups, vitamin C, ferric reducing ability, nitrate/nitrite oxides, and advanced oxidation protein products), in a short period of time after delivery, in order to elucidate this still little discussed issue. Unlike the previous one, our study suggests that vaginal delivery, compared to caesarean section, is associated with lower levels of antioxidants in colostrum, which may make it difficult to protect newborns from oxidative damage. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Our study suggests that normal delivery can influence the antioxidant composition of maternal colostrum, and it is debateable for future clinical practice to improve eating habits during pregnancy and lactation, in order to strengthen the antioxidant capacity of colostrum and reduce oxidative damage to newborns.

Introduction: Oxidative stress is closely related to the pathophysiology of gestation, where the placenta is susceptible to oxidative damage, contributing to the onset of gestational complications. Currently, few studies evaluate the use of oxidative markers for prediction of risk of gestational complications. However, there are some reports that suggest these biomarkers as potential prognostic biomarkers. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare the biomarkers of oxidative stress from gestations with and without complications, and also evaluate the delta of variation in these markers from the first gestational trimester., Material and Methods: A total of 45 pregnant women were evaluated during the three gestational trimesters, of whom 15 developed gestational complications by the end of gestation. The evaluated oxidative damage markers were thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and nitric oxide dosage. Evaluation of the antioxidant system was performed by the quantification of vitamin C, sulfhydryl groups, total antioxidant capacity, plasmatic iron reduction ability, the evaluation of catalase and delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase enzymatic activity., Results: According to the results, the markers of oxidative damage are increased, and the antioxidant profile decreased, in the third trimester of complicated pregnancies as compared to uncomplicated pregnancies. Moreover, the delta of variation in both oxidative damage markers and antioxidants was higher in complicated gestations as compared to uncomplicated gestations, thus suggesting a higher oxidative stress in pregnancies with complications., Conclusions: Oxidative stress parameters appear altered in pregnant women with gestational complications. The markers to oxidative stress can be possible biomarkers, helping in understanding mechanisms underlying the associations between complications during pregnancy and various health outcomes., (© 2022. Background: Despite the gain in life expectancy that people living with HIV (PLHIV) have had in the past few years, the disease is accompanied by an increase in the prevalence of noninfectious chronic diseases. PLHIV have a higher prevalence of osteoporosis, fracture, diabetes mellitus, and insulin resistance than the general population. It is unknown if insulin resistance is associated with osteoporosis and fractures in PLHIV. Our study aimed to assess the association between insulin resistance and osteoporosis in PLHIV., Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in southern Brazil. PLHIV ages 50 years or older on antiretroviral treatment were included. Insulin resistance was considered present when the Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) was higher than expected for the Brazilian population (>2.7). The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index was also calculated., Results: Of the 101 PLHIV who agreed to participate, 84 underwent insulin and bone mineral density measurements. The prevalence of osteoporosis was 19%. The frequency of insulin resistance calculated by HOMA-IR was 68.2%. Participants with osteoporosis had lower body mass index (BMI) and triglyceride values than those without it. HOMA-IR [4.8(6.6) vs 8.68(9.6), P = 0.013] and TyG [5.0(0.3) vs 5.2 (0.4), P = 0.029]. The association between the total femur t -score disappeared after correction for BMI in the linear regression model. There was no association between vertebral fractures and insulin resistance., Conclusion: In our study, PLHIV with osteoporosis have lower insulin resistance than PLHIV without it. However, this finding appears to be related to lower BMI. Introduction: Coffee is one of the most consumed foodstuffs worldwide. Studies of coffee intake in healthy subjects have shown controversial effects on vascular function. However, little is known of coffee intake effects on the endothelium of overweight and obese individuals., Objective: To investigate the acute effects of caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee intake on the endothelial function and arterial stiffness in overweight and obese individuals., Methods: A randomized, double-blind, crossover clinical trial was designed to investigate the effects of regular caffeinated coffee and decaffeinated coffee on the endothelium. Each subject had both caffeinated coffee and decaffeinated coffee, separated by a washout period of seven days. The endothelial function was measured by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) assessed by ultrasound. Arterial stiffness was measured by an automatic oscillometric device. Blood samples were collected to assess the lipid and nitric oxide profiles., Results: There were 18 subjects included in the study, aged 37.4 ± 10.0 years, with an average BMI of 28.96 ± 2.42, with the majority being female (61.1%). The caffeinated coffee increased central systolic blood pressure (P < 0.001), central diastolic blood pressure (P < 0.001) and pulse wave velocity (P < 0.001), but the decaffeinated coffee did not affect these variables. However, there was a better effect on FMD in the caffeinated coffee intake group (P = 0.014)., Conclusion: In overweight and obese individuals, caffeinated coffee increased central blood pressure and pulse wave velocity but not the decaffeinated coffee. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and oxidative profile, including the activity of the enzyme delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (δ-ALA-D), in women who acquired toxoplasmosis during pregnancy and used the triple regimen (sulfadiazine + pyrimethamine + folinic acid [SPFA]) as treatment. These parameters have not been evaluated in pregnant women with toxoplasmosis who used the triple regimen. A total of 53 pregnant women were recruited and divided into two groups: control (C; n = 27) and acute toxoplasmosis (AT; n = 26). Clinical data and blood samples were obtained from all patients. The clinical profile was analyzed by checking parameters such as body mass index, blood pressure, and complete blood count. Oxidative stress was evaluated by quantifying protein (P-SH) and non-protein (NP-SH) thiol groups, vitamin C, plasma iron reduction capacity (FRAP), δ-ALA-D enzyme activity, reactive substances to thiobarbituric acid (TBARS), and nitric oxide (NO). Changes in hematological parameters (increased red cell distribution width and decreased hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration), increased antioxidant system (P-SH, NP-SH, FRAP, δ-ALA-D enzyme activity), as well as damage markers (TBARS and NO), were significantly elevated in pregnant women with toxoplasmosis, compared to those in the control group. Pregnant women treated for this acute infection showed increased damage markers, as well as a significant increase in the antioxidant system, including the activity of the δ-ALA-D enzyme. The aim of this study was to assess potential combination effects of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) with Sida tuberculata extracts on the oxidative stress and antioxidant activity, as well as on the inflammatory process. Rats with knee osteoarthritis (OA) were treated with S. tuberculata extracts and PBMT (904 nm, 18 J/cm 2 ). The animals were evaluated for nociception and edema. The blood, knee lavage and structures, spinal cord, and brainstem were collected for biochemical analyses (lipid peroxidation, protein carbonyl content, superoxide dismutase activity, non-protein thiol levels, and measurement of nitrite/nitrate). The knee structures were also used to measure cytokine levels. PBMT lowered the damage due to oxidative stress in the knee and at distant sites from the lesion. PBMT also reduced the levels of nitric oxide and cytokines, which could explain the nociception reduction mechanism. Similarly, S. tuberculata decreased the damage by oxidative stress, levels of nitrite/nitrate, and cytokines. The therapy combination reduced levels of cytokines and nitrite/nitrate. PBMT and S. tuberculata extracts reduced the oxidative stress and inflammation. It is noteworthy that PBMT increased the antioxidant activity in the knee and at sites distant from the lesion, contributing to a more significant decrease in nociception. The combination of therapies did not present significant effects on the analyzed parameters. Aims: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of the type of delivery (vaginal and cesarean) on the activity of the enzyme delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (δ-ALA-D), which as yet has not been studied, and the markers of oxidative stress., Methods: Seventy-six mothers and their newborns were divided into two groups: normal birth (VD) and elective cesarean section (ECS). Samples of maternal and umbilical cord blood were collected up to 5 min after birth. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), protein thiol (P-SH), nonprotein (NP-SH), the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), catalase, and δ-ALA-D enzyme activity were tested., Results: TBARS and AOPP were significantly higher in mothers of the VD group, while P-SH, NP-SH, FRAP and TAC were reduced. In newborns, TBARS and AOPP did not differ between the groups; however, in the VD group, there was a decrease in P-SH, NP-SH, FRAP, TAC, and catalase. The activity of the δ-ALA-D enzyme was decreased in mothers and neonates born by VD., Conclusions: Mothers undergoing VD had higher levels of free radicals and lower antioxidant defenses, while their newborns decreased antioxidant defenses likely to contain the oxidative imbalance. The inhibition of the δ-ALA-D enzyme in this scenario allows its use as a useful marker of oxidative stress in different obstetric settings.

Background: This study aims to evaluate metabolic and oxidative stress markers in a postmenopausal rat model of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods: Wistar rats were divided in four groups: control ovariectomized (OVX; n  = 9), control SHAM ( n  = 9), androgenized OVX ( n  = 10), and androgenized SHAM ( n  = 10). Female rats were androgenized during the neonatal period and compared with controls. Surgery (ovariectomy or SHAM procedure) was performed at day 100 and euthanasia at day 180 of life. Bodyweight, lipids, glucose, triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, and oxidative stress markers (total oxidant status [TOS], total antioxidant capacity, nitric oxide, ferric-reducing ability of plasma [FRAP], and advanced oxidation protein product) were addressed. Results: Androgenized SHAM rats exhibited a higher total, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, TyG index (an insulin resistance marker), and increased TOS, FRAP, and albumin in comparison with control SHAM rats. These abnormalities disappeared after ovariectomy despite the fact that ovariectomized androgenized rats became heavier than the other three groups. Conclusion: Ovariectomy improved metabolic and oxidative stress markers in a rat model of PCOS.

Urinary albumin is one of the main markers used in clinical practice to assess kidney damage. It is usually measured in laboratories through immunological assays, but these assays may not detect molecules with conformational changes, such as carbamylated albumin/proteins. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of albumin carbamylation on the measurement of albuminuria by an immunoturbidimetric assay. The addition of the carbamylating agent to PBS buffer and urine pool promoted a lower quantification of albumin measured by the immunoturbidimetric method, indicating that this process may be responsible for an underestimation of the results in clinical practice., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Background: Most errors in the laboratory occur due to processes related to the pre-analytical phase. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of multiple freeze-thaw cycles on serum iron, transferrin, and ferritin, as well as the impact of short-term storage on the stability of these analytes., Methods: Serum samples from ten volunteers were submitted to three consecutive freeze-thaw cycles at -20°C and -80°C. Serum aliquots were also kept at 4°C, -20°C, and -80°C for 28 days. Iron, ferritin, and transferrin were measured after 1, 7, 14, 21, or 28 days of storage., Results: Serum ferritin and transferrin showed variations from -2.6 to 2.6% and -1.7 to 2.4%, respectively, in their concentrations during the three freeze-thaw cycles of -20°C and -80°C. However, the variations were statistically significant only at -20°C. No significant changes were found for iron at both temperatures. The storage at temperatures of 4°C, -20°C, and -80°C for up to 4 weeks significantly affected the serum concentrations of iron, ferritin, and transferrin (p < 0.01 for all)., Conclusions: Serum iron, ferritin, and transferrin were affected by the storage of samples at temperatures of 4°C, -20°C and -80°C for up to 4 weeks, and the freeze-thaw cycles at -20°C influenced the measurement of serum ferritin and transferrin.

Paclitaxel use in cancer treatment is limited by a painful syndrome that has no effective treatment. Despite new therapies, drugs of the World Health Organization (WHO) analgesic ladder remain a useful therapeutic tool for cancer pain relief. Since cancer pain is caused by both tumor and chemotherapy, we assessed the efficacy of drugs from the WHO analgesic ladder for cancer pain relief in a paclitaxel-induced pain syndrome (P-IPS) model. P-IPS was induced in rats by one or four injections of paclitaxel on alternate days. The acute and chronic phases were assessed 24 h and 15 days after the first paclitaxel injection, respectively. The mechanical allodynia was evaluated after (step 1 of the ladder) paracetamol, (step 2) codeine alone or plus paracetamol and (step 3) morphine treatment in the acute or chronic phase of P-IPS. Paracetamol, codeine and morphine were equally efficacious in reducing the acute phase of the P-IPS. Codeine plus paracetamol had similar efficacy and potency when administered together in the acute phase of the P-IPS, but produced a longer-lasting effect than when separately managed. Moreover, paracetamol, codeine and morphine partially reduced the chronic phase of P-IPS, losing their efficacy and, in the case of codeine, potency when compared to the acute phase. However, paracetamol plus codeine increased the potency and efficacy of the codeine when compared to codeine administered alone in the chronic phase of P-IPS, producing a long-lasting anti-allodynic effect. Together, analgesics of WHO analgesic ladder reduce both acute and chronic phases of P-IPS, with codeine plus paracetamol presenting more potent, efficacious and long-lasting effect. Thus, in addition to tumor pain, drugs of WHO analgesics ladder could also be useful to treat P-IPS.

Formaldehyde (FA) exposure has been proven to increase the risk of asthma and cancer. This study aimed to evaluate for 28 days the FA inhalation effects on oxidative stress, inflammation process, genotoxicity, and global DNA methylation in mice as well as to investigate the potential protective effects of melatonin. For that, analyses were performed on lung, liver and kidney tissues, blood, and bone marrow. Bronchoalveolar lavage was used to measure inflammatory parameters. Lipid peroxidation (TBARS), protein carbonyl (PCO), non-protein thiols (NPSH), catalase activity (CAT), comet assay, micronuclei (MN), and global methylation were determined. The exposure to 5-ppm FA resulted in oxidative damage to the lung, presenting a significant increase in TBARS and NO levels and a decrease in NPSH levels, besides an increase in inflammatory cells recruited for bronchoalveolar lavage. Likewise, in the liver tissue, the exposure to 5-ppm FA increased TBARS and PCO levels and decreased NPSH levels. In addition, FA significantly induced DNA damage, evidenced by the increase of % tail moment and MN frequency. The pretreatment of mice exposed to FA applying melatonin improved inflammatory and oxidative damage in lung and liver tissues and attenuated MN formation in bone marrow cells. The pulmonary histological study reinforced the results observed in biochemical parameters, demonstrating the potential beneficial role of melatonin. Therefore, our results demonstrated that FA exposure with repeated doses might induce oxidative damage, inflammatory, and genotoxic effects, and melatonin minimized the toxic effects caused by FA inhalation in mice., (© The Author(s) 2020. Muscle pain is the most prevalent type of pain in the world, but treatment remains ineffective. Thus, it is relevant to develop trustable animal models to understand the involved pain mechanisms. Therefore, this study characterised the nociception and inflammation in a traumatic muscle injury model in rats. A single blunt trauma impact on the right gastrocnemius muscle of male Wistar rats (250-350 g) was used as model for muscle pain. Animals were divided into four groups (sham/no treatment; sham/diclofenac 1%; injury/no treatment; injury/diclofenac 1%) and the topical treatment with a cream containing 1% monosodium diclofenac (applied at 2, 6, 12, 24, and 46 h after muscle injury; 200 mg/muscle) was used as an anti-inflammatory control. Nociception (mechanical and cold allodynia, or nociceptive score) and locomotor activity were evaluated at 26 and 48 h after injury. Also, inflammatory and oxidative parameters were evaluated in gastrocnemius muscle and the creatine kinase (CK) activity and lactate/glicose levels in rat's serum and plasma, respectively. Muscle injury caused mechanical and cold allodynia, and increased nociceptive scores, without inducing locomotor impairment. This model also increased the inflammatory cells infiltration (seen by myeloperoxidase and N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase activities and histological procedure), nitric oxide, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and dichlorofluorescein fluorescence in muscle samples; and CK activity and lactate/glicose ratio. The treatment with 1% monosodium diclofenac reduced inflammatory cells infiltration, dichlorofluorescein fluorescence and lactate/glicose levels. The prevalence of chronic diseases is increasing in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the post ART era. Sarcopenia is prevalent in the elderly and is associated with many chronic diseases. Our study aimed to evaluate the frequency of sarcopenia in PLHIV and its association with bone mineral density and fracture. A cross-sectional study was carried out at Santa Maria, South Brazil. It included PLHV age ≥ 50 years and registered to receive antiretroviral therapy. A structured questionnaire was applied, blood samples collected, muscle strength evaluated, body composition measured, and vertebral morphometry performed. Sarcopenia and presarcopenia were defined according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People. Of the 101 patients recruited, 83 underwent DXA and muscle strength measurements. The prevalence of sarcopenia and presarcopenia in the individuals studied was 12% and 16.9%, respectively. 66.7% of sarcopenic individuals had morphometric vertebral fractures and there was a tendency towards a higher frequency of multiple vertebral fractures when compared with non-sarcopenic subjects (44.4% vs. 16.2%, p = 0.066). BMI and total hip BMD were significantly lower in sarcopenic than non-sarcopenic individuals (p ≥ 0.035 and 0.032 respectively). In multiple regression analysis, sarcopenia was associated with age and multiple vertebral fractures. Sarcopenia was present in 12% of this population of PLHIV age ≥ 50 years and was associated with lower hip BMD and a high prevalence of vertebral fractures.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that affects multiple organs; lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the most severe complications of SLE. In the kidneys, an intense inflammatory reaction affects the glomeruli and tubular interstitium. Uric acid has been considered a key molecule in the pathogenesis of some conditions such as metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and kidney disease as it is produced by injured cells and promotes immune-inflammatory responses. In this regard, high serum uric acid concentrations may be involved in the activation of some inflammatory pathways, associated with kidney damage in SLE. Therefore, the purpose of this article was to review the main physiological mechanisms and clinical data on the association between serum uric acid and kidney damage in SLE. Scientific evidence indicates that hyperuricemia has the potential to be an adjuvant in the development and progression of kidney manifestations in SLE. Uric acid may promote the activation of inflammatory pathways and the formation and deposition of autoantibodies in kidneys, leading to a reduction of glomerular filtration rate. Depression is one of the most common mood disorders, which affects one in six people at some point in life. However, the treatment of this disease is still a challenge. Chronic corticosterone administration (CCA) is a widely used animal model to study the mechanisms involved, as well as possible therapeutic strategies for the treatment of depression. Moreover, elevated oxidative stress has been observed in psychiatric disorders, including major depression and, in this context, antioxidant therapy may be a potential therapeutic alternative. In this study, we investigated the effect of seven days of treatment with apocynin, an antioxidant of natural origin, on depressive-like behavior and oxidative parameters in mice submitted to CCA. After 21 days of corticosterone administration (20 mg/Kg/day, subcutaneously, s.c.), we observed the development of depressive-like behavior with an increase in immobility time on tail suspension test and forced swimming test and reduction in total grooming time on splash test. Also, we found high superoxide dismutase activity and hydrogen peroxide levels whereas catalase activity was reduced in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus and striatum. Seven days of treatment with apocynin (100 mg/Kg/day orally, p.o), performed immediately after corticosterone administration in the last week of protocol, was able to reverse the most of these changes, revealing its antidepressant-like effect. Studies suggest that redox imbalance may be closely associated with pathological aging, contributing effectively to the genesis of several chronic diseases. One of the major defence enzymes against oxidation is Manganese-dependent superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) that acts within the mitochondria. The gene encoding this enzyme is polymorphic and Val16Ala variant is one of its most investigated polymorphisms regarding aging and oxidative stress. This study aimed to verify the occurrence of the MnSOD Val16Ala gene polymorphism association with markers of REDOX metabolism in the elderly of primary health care. A cross-sectional study was performed. The sample consisted of 270 elderly individuals from Family Health Strategy in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (EMISUS). The following variables were investigated in all subjects: sociodemographic: gender, age, marital status, schooling and income; Anthropometric: weight, height, body mass index (BMI); REDOX markers: advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), nitric oxide metabolites (NO x ), ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) and malondialdehyde (MDA), MnSOD Val16Ala gene polymorphism. Val16Ala gene polymorphism was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Statistically significant associations were observed in the elderly with AA genotype compared to those with VV genotype, concerning AOPP ( p  = 0.023) and FRAP ( p  = 0.027) quartile frequencies, respectively. No statistically significant differences were observed between MnSOD genotypes with MDA, NO x and IMA oxidative markers. Val16Ala gene polymorphism is associated with AOPP and FRAP quartiles frequencies in the elderly of primary health care.

Background: The mitochondrial protein frataxin is involved in iron metabolism, as well as regulation of oxidative stress. To elucidate the association of frataxin with the pathophysiology of diabetes, we evaluated the mRNA levels of frataxin in leukocytes of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). In addition, we investigated the relation between frataxin mRNA levels, inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress biomarkers., Methods: A study including 150 subjects (115 patients with T2D and 35 healthy subjects) was performed to evaluate the frataxin mRNA levels in leukocytes. We assessed the relation between frataxin and interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), total oxidation status (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and serum iron., Results: The frataxin mRNA levels in the T2D group were significantly lower than those in healthy subjects. It was also demonstrated that T2D patients with frataxin mRNA levels in the lowest quartile had significantly elevated levels of serum iron, TOS, and inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-6, while TAC levels were significantly lower in this quartile when compared with the upper quartile., Conclusions: Our findings showed that T2D patients with low frataxin mRNA levels showed a high degree of inflammation and oxidative stress. The purpose is to determine markers of oxidative stress related to the longer and shorter duration of labor (DOL) of pregnant women in the umbilical cord blood of neonates, not yet studied. Blood samples from the umbilical cord were collected from pregnant women with normal delivery and classified according to DOL in two groups: a group with DOL less than 310 min ( n  = 33) and a group with DOL greater than or equal to 310 min ( n  = 35). The oxidative stress parameters were analyzed by the quantification of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), nitrate/nitrite (NOx), protein thiol groups (P-SH) and non-protein (NP-SH), vitamin C and plasma iron reduction capacity (FRAP), in addition to the activity of the enzyme delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (δ-ALA-D). The activity of the δ-ALA-D enzyme was shown to be decreased in longer DOL, however, the oxidant parameters and antioxidants were higher in the longer DOL, with the exception of NP-SH that was lower. The longer maternal DOL time is related to the alteration of δ-ALA-D enzyme activity and other parameters in neonates, suggesting an increase in the passage of maternal oxidative markers by umbilical cord blood.

Background: This study investigated the association between urinary levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (uACR), and urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D)., Methods: Urinary concentrations of IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, ACR, and NGAL were measured in 121 patients with T2D., Results: Urinary IL-6 and TNF-α increased 45.5% and 49.4% in the highest uACR quartile compared to lowest quartile. Urinary IL-10 levels decreased 40.9% in the highest uACR quartile compared to the lowest quartile. Urinary IL-6 and TNF-α were 75.3% and 81.6%, higher in the highest uNGAL quartile compared to the lowest quartile. Urinary IL-10 concentration was 69.8% lower in patients from the highest uNGAL quartile compared to lowest quartile., Conclusions: Urinary IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α were associated with indicators of glomerular and tubular injuries in patients with T2D.

Complex regional pain syndrome I (CRPS-I) is a chronic painful pathology still undertreated. CTK 01512-2 is a recombinant version of the spider peptide Phα1β, and it functions as a voltage-gated calcium channel blocker and a transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) antagonist with antinociceptive effect in different pain models. Here, we investigate the mechanisms involved in the acute and chronic nociceptive phases of a model of CPRS-I in mice and assess the antinociceptive effect of CTK 01512-2 using this model. Adult male and female mice C57BL/6 (20-30 g) were used to determine mechanical (von Frey test) or cold (acetone test) allodynia induction. Inflammatory parameters (serum and tibial nerve lactate levels, hind paw temperature and edema, or tissue cell infiltration) were evaluated after chronic post-ischemia pain (CPIP, a model of CPRS-I) induction. Anti-inflammatory and anti-neuropathic drugs or CTK 01512-2 were tested. First, we detected that CPIP-induced mechanical and cold allodynia in male and female mice in a similar way. In the acute phase (1 day after CPIP), an increase in inflammatory parameters were observed, as well as the anti-allodynic effect of anti-inflammatory compounds. In the chronic phase (17 days after CPIP), mice exhibited mechanical and cold allodynia, and anti-neuropathic drugs induced antinociception, while no inflammatory alterations were found. CTK 01512-2 reversed the CPIP allodynic effect in both nociceptive phases. Thus, this CPRS-I model can be used to understand the mechanisms involved in CPRS-I induced pain and inflammation. Severe and poorly treated pain often accompanies breast cancer. Thus, novel mechanisms involved in breast cancer-induced pain should be investigated. Then, it is necessary to characterize animal models that are reliable with the symptoms and progression of the disease as observed in humans. Explaining cancer-induced nociception in a murine model of breast carcinoma was the aim of this study. 4T1 (10 4 ) lineage cells were inoculated in the right fourth mammary fat pad of female BALB/c mice; after this, mechanical and cold allodynia, or mouse grimace scale (MGS) were observed for 30 days. To determine the presence of bone metastasis, we performed the metastatic clonogenic test and measure calcium serum levels. At 20 days after tumor induction, the antinociceptive effect of analgesics used to relieve pain in cancer patients (acetaminophen, naproxen, codeine or morphine) or a cannabinoid agonist (WIN 55,212-2) was tested. Mice inoculated with 4T1 cells developed mechanical and cold allodynia and increased MGS. Bone metastasis was confirmed using the clonogenic assay, and hypercalcemia was observed 20 days after cells inoculation. All analgesic drugs reduced the mechanical and cold allodynia, while the MGS was decreased only by the administration of naproxen, codeine, or morphine. Also, WIN 55,212-2 improved all nociceptive measures. This pain model could be a reliable form to observe the mechanisms of breast cancer-induced pain or to observe the efficacy of novel analgesic compounds.

Background: Uric acid presents different roles in an organism. High serum uric acid concentrations may induce inflammatory pathways and promote kidney damage through different mechanisms. Therefore, this study investigated the association among high serum uric acid concentrations, renal tubular damage, and renal inflammation assessed via estimation of urinary kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) and inflammatory cytokines in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D)., Methods: Urinary concentrations of KIM-1, IL-1, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-alpha, as well as other biochemical parameters, were assessed in 125 patients with T2D who were grouped into two groups based on the serum uric acid levels (<6.0 mg/dL and ≥6.0 mg/dL). Patients were also stratified according to the tertiles of serum uric acid concentrations., Results: Urinary KIM-1, IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-alpha were higher in patients with serum uric acid concentrations ≥ 6.0 mg/dL. However, the differences between the groups were not statistically significant when the urinary values of KIM-1 and cytokines were normalized by the urinary creatinine concentration. Serum uric acid concentrations were significantly associated with urinary KIM-1 (values normalized by urinary creatinine concentration) and urinary TNF-alpha (absolute values and values normalized by urinary creatinine concentration), independent of the body mass index (BMI) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)., Conclusions: High serum uric acid concentrations were associated with high urinary KIM-1 levels accompanied by the increase of urinary proinflammatory cytokines in patients with T2D. However, normalization of urinary markers by urine creatinine concentration seems to influence the profile of the results.

Background: The effects of adding moderate-to-high intensity inspiratory muscle training (IMT) to short-term aerobic and resistance exercise (combined training [CT]), after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are not established. This study aimed to determine the effects of moderate-to-high intensity IMT + CT on exercise capacity, respiratory muscle strength, inspiratory muscle endurance, quality of life (QoL), and laboratory biomarkers in patients after CABG who were participants of a phase II cardiac rehabilitation program., Methods: Twenty-four patients were randomly assigned to either the IMT + CT group (n = 12), who performed moderate-to-high intensity IMT with CT or the sham-IMT + CT group (n = 12). Patients completed two sessions per week for 12 weeks. Each patient underwent a cardiopulmonary exercise test, six-minute walk test (6MWT), respiratory muscle strength and endurance evaluation, QoL questionnaire, and serum advanced oxidation protein products, ferric reducing antioxidant power [FRAP], nitrate/nitrate, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, before and after the 12-week intervention., Results: The IMT + CT group showed significantly greater improvements in peak oxygen uptake (1.3 mL∙kg -1 ∙min -1 ; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 0.5 to 2.2), distance covered during the 6MWT (78.8 m; 95% CI, 28.1 to 129.5), maximal inspiratory pressure (23.0 cmH 2 O; 95% CI, 9.3 to 36.7), QoL (-15.1 points; 95% CI, -26.9 to -3.3), and FRAP (83.7 μmol/L; 95% CI, 20.2 to 147.1) compared to the sham-IMT + CT group as a result of the intervention., Conclusions: Short-term moderate-to-high intensity IMT with CT provided additional benefits in exercise capacity, inspiratory muscle strength, QoL, and antioxidant profile in patients after CABG.
