Objective: The aim of the present studies was to provide a psychometric evaluation of a version of the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ) for assessing motivations derived from self-determination theory for responsible drinking among college students. Methods: A convenience sample of 308 college student drinkers (71.7% female) were recruited for Study 1 and a random sample of 192 college student drinkers (58.9% female) were recruited for Study 2. Participants completed the TSRQ and other self-report measures in both studies. Results: In Study 1, confirmatory factor analyses supported a revised four-factor structure of the TSRQ. In Study 2, correlation analyses generally provided support for the concurrent validity of the TSRQ subscales. Conclusion: The present studies provide some initial support for the TSRQ for assessing motivations for responsible drinking. Directions for future research and implications of a measure for assessing motivations for responsible drinking among college students are discussed.

One in six individuals in the world are disabled; yet, modern survey science lacks a framework of inclusion for individuals with disabilities. For this reason, the behavioral health knowledge base is limited in generalizability and exacerbates health disparities. The purpose of this article is to report the iterative and community-engaged process underwent to facilitate an accessible research participation experience for Blind or low vision (BLV) participants. The authors highlight tips for engaging the community learned throughout the project. Pilot research, focus group discussions (Study 1), and a survey (Study 2) engaged BLV adults and solicited their feedback on the format and accessibility of the research procedures of a healthcare quality scale development project. The focus group discussion participants reported benefits from participation, including enjoyment from participation and knowledge sharing. The survey participants commented on the degree that study measures reflected community members' experiences and provided feedback on study materials and format. Methods from our studies easily can be adopted into most research designs, can increase the participation of disabled persons, can improve validity and generalizability, and can reduce health disparities. The aim of this article is to assess the measurement invariance of the Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire (BVAQ) in U.S. Anglo (n = 490) and U.S. Hispanic (n = 379) samples of college students. The BVAQ items demonstrated invariance of the factor loadings, the latent item intercepts, and unique factor variances. However, Hispanics had higher verbalizing scores and lower fantasizing scores on the latent variables. As a whole, the BVAQ requires additional testing and/or refinement for use with a Hispanic sample. Until such refinements, the authors recommend that the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 be used with U.S. Hispanic samples. (Contains 2 notes and 2 tables.)

This project tested the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 (STAXI-2) and the Novaco Anger Scale-Provocation Inventory (NAS-PI) in a sample of U.S. Hispanic (n = 257) and U.S. non-Hispanic White (n = 246) undergraduate students. Internal consistency, subscale correlations, convergent validity with the Multidimensional Anger Inventory (MAI), and predictive validity were all analyzed. Across ethnic groups, all major subscales demonstrated adequate internal consistency reliability. Correlations between the subscales were strong for both groups within each measure and with the subscales of the other measure. In predicting PI scores, there was no evidence of intercept invariance across the ethnic groups and no evidence of slope invariance when either measure was used as a predictor. Results suggest that both measures are valid for use in Hispanic samples. (Contains 1 note and 6 tables.)

College drinking behavior is a national public health concern. However, little research has been conducted to test the psychometric validity and reliability of alcohol use measures among Spanish-speaking Hispanic college students. Adopting a translation-back-translation approach, the Rutgers Alcohol Problem Index (RAPI) was translated into Spanish and the Razones del Consumo de Alcohol (RCA), a newly created measure of ones reasons for drinking, was developed in Spanish. Both measures were administered to 155 Spanish-speaking students at a university in the Southwestern United States. All translated measures demonstrated adequate internal consistency reliability. Support for the construct validity of the translated RAPI measure was demonstrated as gender and RCA scores were predictive of RAPI scores in their expected directions [R[superscript 2] = 0.438, F(2, 138) = 53.36, p = 0.000]. Acculturation was not significantly associated with RAPI scores nor did acculturation interact with RCA scores to enhance the predictability of RAPI scores. Finally, an exploratory factor analysis was performed on the RCA revealing a one-factor solution as the most adequate description of the RCA data. Knowledge of reasons for drinking as assessed by the RCA seems useful in predicting drinking-related consequences among Hispanic college students. (Contains 3 tables and 2 endnotes.)

We tested measurement invariance of the Readiness to Change Questionnaire (RCQ) to evaluate its utility in assessing the stages of change in the context of brief intervention for alcohol use in opportunistic settings. Participants (N = 596) were patients admitted from three Level I trauma centers who were randomly assigned to one of three brief alcohol interventions. The RCQ was administered at baseline and 3-month follow-up. The RCQ was scalar invariant across biological sex and partially scalar invariant across race/ethnicity and alcohol use severity. Hispanic participants were higher on contemplation and action and Black participants were higher on action than White participants. Hazardous drinkers were lower in precontemplation and higher in contemplation and action than nonhazardous drinkers. The RCQ was scalar invariant across intervention conditions and time. Brief motivational intervention with a booster increased action from baseline to 3 month. These findings provide further support for the use of the RCQ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study used mixed methods to investigate the experiences of 33 participants who are blind (PWB) and have diabetes in managing their diabetes, support (or lack thereof) from their health care providers, and diabetes distress as PWB. Participants most frequently reported barriers to check blood glucose (55%), maintaining a healthy diet (45%), and distress due to their intersectional status of having blindness and diabetes. Those who mentioned intersectional distress of managing diabetes as a PWB tended to be Braille illiterate and less likely to use mobility tools that are symbolic of blindness (e.g., white cane, guide dog). These results illuminate heterogenous characteristics of PWB with diabetes, an understudied population of public health significance, to be considered when setting priorities for diabetes self-management support and health care coverage policy. The Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay men (ATLG; Herek, 1988) hypothesizes that individuals can have feelings of sexual prejudice toward gay men and lesbians. No research has confirmed the hypothesized factor structure of the ATLG. This study tested four possible factor structures for the ATLG. Results indicate that the hierarchical factor model provided a good description of the ATLG items. A measure of total sexual prejudice was derived. From the hierarchical structure, a measure representing the difference in sexual prejudice toward gay men and lesbians was also computed. Increased religious involvement and the etiology of homosexuality were statistical predictors of overall sexual prejudice, while decreased religious involvement and gender were statistical predictors of differential sexual prejudice toward gay men. Research was conducted to examine the psychometric characteristics of the stage of readiness to change. The stage of readiness to change has been acknowledged as a valid independent measure of the transtheoretical model of health behavior change. A sample of 261 female smokers participated in a study to test the stability and reliability of the stage of readiness to change measure. Results suggest that the measure of stage of readiness to change has high levels of stability and reliability for the female smokers.

Aims Determine if the language in which brief intervention (BI) is delivered influences drinking outcomes among Mexican-origin young adults in the emergency department when controlling for ethnic matching. Short Summary Aim of study was to determine if a patient's preferred language of intervention influences drinking outcomes among Mexican-origin young adults in the emergency department. Results indicate no significant differences in drinking outcomes among those who received BI in Spanish and BI in English. Methods This is a secondary data analysis on data from 310 patients randomized to receive a BI completed in Spanish (BI-S) or English (BI-E), with 3- and 12-month follow-up. Outcome measures of interest were drinking days per week, drinks per drinking day, maximum drinks in a day and negative consequences of drinking. Results There were no significant differences in drinking outcomes among those who received BI in Spanish and BI in English. Conclusions Reduced drinking outcomes following BI among Mexican-origin young adults in the emergency department may not have been due to the language used to deliver intervention. Thus, our results provide evidence that language of intervention is not a crucial factor to achieve cultural congruence. In addition, our findings suggest that receiving the intervention is beneficial regardless of language, thus, facilitating real-world implementation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
