- Abstract
Contextualization: M. scabrella is a native tree species of the Brazilian Mixed Ombrophilous Forest, with a high ecological importance and economic potential. Knowledge gap: There is a lack of information about the use of resources that favour the seedlings production of this species. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the most appropriate doses of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) combined with the addition of remineralizer for production of M. scabrella seedlings. Methodology: Seedlings were produced using four doses of CRF (0, 4, 8, and 12 kg m-3) and four doses of remineralizer (0 %, 10 %, 20 %, and 30 %), in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme. At 180 days of seedling production, growth in height and stem diameter, shoot (SDB), root (RDB) and total biomass (TDB), and Dickson quality index (DQI) were evaluated. Results and conclusions: The use of remineralizer provided an increase in density and water retention capacity of substrates, as well as a reduction of macroporosity and total porosity. Combined with doses of 4 and 8 kg m-3, CRF contributed to the increase of biomass and DQI. The addition of 10 % remineralizer, associated with 4.0 kg m-3 CRF, provides adequate growth to produce M. scabrella seedlings. Above this percentage of remineralizer and CRF dose, species growth rate is reduced., Contextualización: M. scabrella es una especie arbórea nativa del Bosque Mixto Ombrófilo brasileño, de gran importancia ecológica y potencial económico.

- Abstract
Contextualization: The use of organic fertilizers from agricultural industry residues is an alternative as a nutritional source in agroforestry cultures, mainly due to the slow release of nutrients. The leaf biomass production is essential for yerba mate production, which demands adequate nutritional management to maintain productivity and soil fertility. Knowledge gap: Most yerba mate is produced with the use of mineral fertilizers, and there are no records of how organic fertilization with poultry manure could influence plants growth, nutritional status, and soil fertility. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of organic fertilization on soil fertility, growth, and nutritional status of yerba mate seedlings. Methodology: Two clonal cultivars of yerba mate (BRS408 and BRS409) were subjected to three fertilization doses with poultry manure (0, 20, and 35 g dm-3). The study was established in a factorial design, in a randomized block design with four replications. After 210 days, pH, organic matter content, availability of P, K, Ca, and Mg in the soil were analyzed. In addition, plants were evaluated in the same period for growth and leaf content of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S. Data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey test for means comparison. Results and conclusions: Organic fertilization positively influenced soil characteristics and yerba mate seedlings growth, with significant differences in the response of each clone.

- Abstract
Araucaria angustifolia is a native Brazilian conifer of great economic importance. The difficulty of breaking apical dominance and induction/growth of multiple shoots is characteristic of the species, leading to difficulties in the production of mini-cuttings and formation of a lower open canopy for pinion production in orchards. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of gibberellin application, shading and different pruning heights in overcoming the apical dominance in araucaria seedlings. Seedlings with approximately 4 years old were submitted to three experiments, which were the application of gibberellin (0 mg L-1 GA3 and 500 mg L-1 GA3); shading (full sun and shade house) and different pruning heights (30 cm and 60 cm) from the seedling neck. The application of GA3 promoted smaller number of shoots than the control treatment (0 mg L-1 GA3). There was no influence of shading on shoot length. Pruning at 30 cm promoted the largest number of shoots. Thus, it can be concluded that the cutoff at 30 cm is indicated for the production of multiple shoots in A. angustifolia, neither GA3 application nor seedling shading are necessary for shoot growth.

- Abstract
Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensisA. St.-Hil.) is a South American tree cultivated in systems with or without shading at different intensities; however, there is no consensus about shading effect on leaf biomass production. Therefore, we evaluated yerba mate clones under different shading levels over one year to determine the influence of shading and genotype on biomass production. Two yerba mate genotypes (EC22 and EC40), cultivated in a semi-hydroponic system, were subjected to five shading levels (0%, 40%, 51%, 76%, and 82%) in a greenhouse. We determined total fresh biomass (branches and leaves) and fresh biomass of young and mature leaves on six harvests. Biomass production was influenced by harvest season, genotype, and shading levels. Spring and summer harvests provided higher biomass production than the other seasons. EC40 genotype produced higher total fresh and young leaf biomass than EC22. Although we observed differences among genotypes and harvest seasons, shading was the factor that most influenced biomass production. Total fresh biomass productivity was reduced 6.8 times between 0% and 82% shading for the EC40 genotype. Thus, we do not recommend high levels of shade, such as 76% and 82%, in this new yerba mate cultivation system.

- Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the influence of containers and shading on Ilex paraguariensisA.St.-Hil (yerba mate) seedling growth. We used a completely randomized design with a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement (containers × shading). We used PlantPaper®, Ellepot®(both biodegradable containers composed of cellulose fibers), and polypropylene tube containers and shaded (75% shading screen) and unshaded (without shading screen) greenhouse environments. We measured height and stem diameter every 30 days and shoot and root dry biomass 210 days after sowing. With these data, we calculated the total dry biomass, Dickson quality index, and height/diameter ratio. The unshaded environment increased yerba mate seedlings growth in height and stem diameter. In unshaded environments, seedlings produced in biodegradable containers had greater growth than those produced in polypropylene tubes. In the shaded environment, however, seedlings produced in polypropylene tubes had better growth. Despite the differences observed between treatments, all seedlings presented adequate growth during the nursery phase. We suggest the use of biodegradable containers to produce yerba mate seedlings in unshaded environments.

- Abstract
This study aimed to verify the influence of accelerated aging test in the vigor of seeds of Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poiret. After the measurement of the biometric characteristics of seeds, the treatment to overcome dormancy was applied, which consisted in the use of water at 100ºC for 4 minutes. The accelerated aging test was conducted in a completely randomized design, with four replications of 50 seeds in each treatment. The seeds were artificially aged at 40, 43 and 46 ºC during 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. The degree of humidity (8.51 %) is characteristic of orthodox seeds, this value increased as the time of permanence of the seeds in aging treatments. The germination percentage and the germination speed index showed significant reduction in seeds subjected to higher temperatures and times, although there is no significant increase in average time of germination. The frequency of germination was homogeneous in seeds that were subjected to 40 °C, the homogeneity decreases with increasing temperature and the period of artificial aging. The results suggest that Mimosa tenuiflora seed deterioration during accelerated ageing is closely related to a decrease in germination. Key words: Germination, caatinga, Brazil, vigor, Mimosa tenuiflora.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of substrates made of composted sewage sludge and irrigation depths on the growth and quality of E. grandis x E. urophylla cuttings to optimize water management for each substrate. The substrates were obtained from sewage sludge composted with sugarcane bagasse or Eucalyptus bark, namely: composted sewage sludge with sugarcane bagasse (1:3 v:v); sewage sludge composted with Eucalyptus bark (1:3 v:v) and a mixture of both substrates in a volumetric proportion 2:1 (v:v). Commercial substrate composed of Sphagnum peat, vermiculite and rice husk (3:1:1 v:v: v) was used as a control. The irrigation depths tested were 11, 14 and 17 mm, applied in two daily applications. The substrates were physically and chemically characterized and height, stem diameter, shoot, root and total dry mass, Dickson quality index and root system conformation were measured to determine the growth and quality of seedlings. The substrates obtained through the composting of sewage sludge with sugarcane bagasse or Eucalyptus bark are fit for producing Eucalyptus cuttings, however, the water specificity of each substrate must be considered. Although an 11mm irrigation depth is indicted for the mixture of both substrates (2:1 v:v), a 17mm irrigation depth is needed for the sewage sludge composted with sugarcane bagasse (1:3 v:v) substrate.
