Abstract

Variance heterogeneity is a common feature of educational data when treatment differences expressed through means are present, and often reflects a treatment by subject interaction with respect to an outcome variable. Identifying variables that account for this interaction can enhance understanding of whom a treatment does and does not benefit in ways that can inform and improve the treatment. Even in the absence of a treatment effect expressed through means studying variance heterogeneity offers insight into a treatment by identifying subject characteristics related to heterogeneity. This study illustrates four methods of modeling variance heterogeneity for data from a study of the impact of an engineering design-based STEM curriculum on student achievement with a focus on multilevel models.

Abstract

Tool selection is relevant because a wide variety of materials exhibit different machinability behaviors. Tool life during manufacturing is commonly associated with productivity. Insert developers have been using coatings on cutting tools to enhance their performance, with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) being the two most used techniques. This study analyzed the cutting tool wear mechanism by machining AISI D2 steel using two different inserts of TiAlN/TiN PVD and TiCN/Al2O3 CVD as layers deposited on a carbide substrate. The two inserts were tested at three different cutting speeds, namely, low, medium, and high; these values were below the data suggested by the supplier catalog. The flank wear and rake face were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). The adhesion material, edge deformation, and abrasion were the main wear mechanisms before catastrophic damage occurred at the three different cutting speeds in the PVD cutting tool. Nevertheless, increasing the cutting speed reduced the tool life from 84% to 61% at high values compared to the medium values of PVD and CVD, respectively, where the medium value resulted in a balance between the material removal rate and tool life. The wear mechanism of the CVD tool was BUE and chipping; nevertheless, its craters were larger than those of the PVD. Compared to those configured for PVD, the CVD insert demonstrated the ability to machine D2 steel at twice the cutting speed with a workpiece surface roughness of 0.3 µm, in contrast to a variation of 0.6 to 0.15 µm with the PVD tool. Abstract

The obtention of luminescent SiOxCy:H thin films deposited by the HW-CVD technique is reported here. We study the effect of different monomethyl-silane (MMS) flow rates on the films properties. An increase in the emission bandwidth and a red-shift was observed when the MMS flow increased. The luminescence was related to optical transitions in band tail states and with less contribution from quantum confinement effects. After, the films were annealed at 750 °C in nitrogen. The annealed film deposited at the highest MMS flow showed an emission spectrum like the as-deposited film, suggesting the same emission mechanisms. By contrast, the annealed film deposited at the lowest MMS flow showed two emission bands. These bands are due to the activation of radiative defects related to oxygen-deficient centers. MOS-like structures were fabricated as electroluminescent devices using the annealed films. Only the structure of the film with the highest carbon content showed light emission in a broad band in the visible spectrum region in forward bias, with a maximum centered close to 850 nm. The light emission mechanism was related to electron thermalization in the band tail states and a direct hole injection into deep states. The trap-assisted tunneling, Poole–Frenkel emissions and Fowler–Nordheim tunneling were proposed as the charge transport mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Silicon nitride is a commonly used material for ceramic applications and in the fabrication processes of integrated circuits (ICs). It has also increased in interest from the scientific community for use as a functional coating due to its physical, mechanical, electrical, and optoelectronic properties. In particular, silicon-rich silicon nitride (SRSN) has been considered in the photovoltaic industry as a down-conversion film for solar cells. In this work, SRSN films have been obtained by the Low-Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition (LPCVD) technique at low to moderate deposition temperatures with a variation in the precursor gas pressure ratio. The SRSN films showed a wide photoluminescence (PL) in the visible region (without a high-deposition temperature or annealing process) and suitable optical properties (refractive index and absorption in the UV) to be used as photoluminescent coating on silicon solar cells. The absence of high-deposition temperatures could preserve the original structure of silicon solar cells, once the SRSN layer was applied. In addition, control of the reactive gas pressure ratio and deposition temperature showed an influence on the refractive index, the surface roughness, and the PL emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19. Reforestation and its role in sustainable development of one community of Luz de América, Ecuador, with eight subtropical plant species implemented

Abstract

The objective of our social project was to improve agroforestry production systems through the reforestation of multipurpose plant species and to counteract the effects of climate change. Over the course of 24 months (in 2016–2018), 14,125 trees were planted, reforesting 50 farms in the Luz de América rural parish, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas province, Ecuador. The project became an activity integrated into rural communities where 25 community leaders were trained on establishing techniques, planting density, and forest management of several species, such as black and white guayacans, cedar, Honduran mahogany, dyer’s mulberry, Brazilian fern tree, laurel, and Colombian timber bamboo. The leaders were regarded as multipliers of the knowledge acquired on the farms and actively collaborated with the University of the Armed Forces (ESPE). A group of teachers of social engagement, 58 agricultural and livestock engineering students from ESPE, and 151 community beneficiaries carried out data collection and cultural work. At the end of the project, the survival rate of plants was 82.01%, and the total investment was USD 18 thousand. Among the project’s indirect benefits, we can mention an increase in water sources in the area, the control of erosion in degraded areas and steep slopes on farms, mitigation of climate change, and improvement of the economic conditions of the residents.

28. Brick dust and fly ash as subgrade stabilizer for Low Traffic Volume Roads: laboratory and test track evaluation.

Abstract

Currently, there are materials from industry that, under certain physical conditions, can contribute to the improvement of soils mechanical properties. Materials such as brick dust (BD) and fly ash (FA) have high SiO2 and Al2O3 contents, which denote pozzolanic activity. In addition, it has been shown that these materials can be activated when combined with lime. This generates internal cementation processes when the particle size is 0.075 mm. Rural roads in Colombia have one of the highest percentages of the entire road infrastructure, and only about 7% are in good condition. Difficult access conditions, soil susceptibility, the financial impossibility of intervening in this entire network and the need to implement circular economy processes, make these materials attractive in terms of stabilization to improve traffic conditions. BD and FA were applied in dosages of 0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, 12% and 24% in finogranular soils (silt and clay) and sandy soils, compaction was evaluated, and a factorial experimental design was carried out to evaluate the influence of the material on the variable unconfined compressive strength (UCS), through an ANOVA analysis. To evaluate the performance of BD and FA, a test track was made on a low traffic volume road in northern Colombia, which had a sandy soil. BD and FA were added at 12% and activated with lime, in 30 m long cells. To establish a comparative pattern, other cells were made in the same geometric conditions with materials that are usually used in this type of application, such as cement. These cells were evaluated over a period of 16 months. Characteristics such as resilient modulus, international roughness index (IRI) and slip resistance coefficient were measured during this period. The results indicate that when these materials are added to finogranular soils (silts and clays), the UCS increases by 150% with respect to the unstabilized soil, while for sandy soils the strength increases from 70% to 125%. During the evaluation period, the BD and the FA were able to increases of over 50% in the resilient modulus with respect to the unstabilized soil. However, the FA showed comparable results with respect to the cement-stabilized cell. In addition, although the sections deteriorated over time, they maintained their roughness index within the admissible ranges indicative of a good serviceability index. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Microbes drive ecosystem functioning and their viruses modulate these impacts through mortality, gene transfer and metabolic reprogramming. Despite the importance of virus-host interactions and likely variable infection efficiencies of individual phages across hosts, such variability is seldom quantified. Here, we quantify infection efficiencies of 38 phages against 19 host strains in aquatic Cellulophaga (Bacteroidetes) phage-host model systems. Binary data revealed that some phages infected only one strain while others infected 17, whereas quantitative data revealed that efficiency of infection could vary 10 orders of magnitude, even among phages within one population. This provides a baseline for understanding and modeling intrapopulation host range variation. Genera specific host ranges were also informative. For example, the Cellulophaga Microviridae, showed a markedly broader intra-species host range than previously observed in Escherichia coli systems. Further, one phage genus, Cba41, was examined to investigate nonheritable changes in plating efficiency and burst size that depended on which host strain it most recently infected. While consistent with host modification of phage DNA, no differences in nucleotide sequence or DNA modifications were detected, leaving the observation repeatable, but the mechanism unresolved. Overall, this study highlights the importance of quantitatively considering replication variations in studies of phage-host interactions.

48. The Impact of Design-Based STEM Integration Curricula on Student Achievement in Engineering, Science, and Mathematics

Abstract

The new science education reform documents call for integration of engineering into K-12 science classes. Engineering design and practices are new to most science teachers, meaning that implementing effective engineering instruction is likely to be challenging. This quasi-experimental study explored the influence of teacher-developed, engineering design-based science curriculum units on learning and achievement among grade 4-8 students of different races, gender, special education status, and limited English proficiency (LEP) status. Treatment and control students (n = 4450) completed pretest and posttest assessments in science, engineering, and mathematics as well as a state-mandated mathematics test. Single-level regression results for science outcomes favored the treatment for one science assessment (physical science, heat transfer), but multilevel analyses showed no significant treatment effect. We also found that engineering integration had different effects across race and gender and that teacher gender can reduce or exacerbate the gap in engineering achievement for student subgroups depending on the outcome. Other teacher factors such as the quality of engineering-focused science units and engineering instruction were predictive of student achievement in engineering. Implications for practice are discussed.
