Recent observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have uncovered unexpectedly high cosmic star formation activity in the early Universe, mere hundreds of millions of years after the Big Bang. These observations are often understood to reflect an evolutionary shift in star formation efficiency (SFE) caused by changing galactic conditions during these early epochs. We present FIREbox-HR, a high-resolution, cosmological hydrodynamical simulation from the Feedback in Realistic Environments project, which offers insights into the SFE of galaxies during the first billion years of cosmic time. FIREbox-HR re-simulates the cosmic volume (L = 22.1 cMpc) of the original FIREbox run with eight times higher mass resolution (m_b ~ 7800 M_sun), but with identical physics, down to z ~ 6. FIREbox-HR predicts ultraviolet (UV) luminosity functions in good agreement with available observational data. The simulation also successfully reproduces the observed cosmic UV luminosity density at z ~ 6 - 14, demonstrating that relatively high star formation activity in the early Universe is a natural outcome of the baryonic processes encoded in the FIRE-2 model. According to FIREbox-HR, the SFE - halo mass relation for intermediate mass halos (M_halo ~ 10^9 - 10^11 M_sun) does not significantly evolve with redshift and is only weakly mass-dependent. These properties of the SFE - halo mass relation lead to a larger contribution from lower mass halos at higher z, driving the gradual evolution of the observed cosmic UV luminosity density. A theoretical model based on the SFE - halo mass relation inferred from FIREbox-HR allows us to explore implications for galaxy evolution. While galaxy rotation curves provide one of the most powerful methods for measuring dark matter profiles in the inner regions of rotation-supported galaxies, at the dwarf scale there are factors that can complicate this analysis. Given the expectation of a universal profile in dark matter-only simulations, the diversity of observed rotation curves has become an often-discussed issue in Lambda Cold Dark Matter cosmology on galactic scales. We analyze a suite of Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) simulations of $10^{10}-10^{12}$ $M_\odot$ halos with standard cold dark matter, and compare the true circular velocity to rotation curve reconstructions. We find that, for galaxies with well-ordered gaseous disks, the measured rotation curve may deviate from true circular velocity by at most 10% within the radius of the disk. However, non-equilibrium behavior, non-circular motions, and non-thermal and non-kinetic stresses may cause much larger discrepancies of 50% or more. Most rotation curve reconstructions underestimate the true circular velocity, while some reconstructions transiently over-estimate it in the central few kiloparsecs due to dynamical phenomena. We further demonstrate that the features that contribute to these failures are not always visibly obvious in HI observations. If such dwarf galaxies are included in galaxy catalogs, they may give rise to the appearance of "artificial" rotation curve diversity that does not reflect the true variation in underlying dark matter profiles., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

The observationally-inferred size versus stellar-mass relationship (SMR) for low-mass galaxies provides an important test for galaxy formation models. However, the relationship relies on assumptions that relate observed luminosity profiles to underlying stellar mass profiles. Here we use the Feedback in Realistic Environments simulations of low-mass galaxies to explore how the predicted SMR changes depending on whether one uses star-particle counts directly or mock observations. We reproduce the SMR found in The Exploration of Local Volume Satellites survey remarkably well only when we infer stellar masses and sizes using mock observations. However, when we use star particles to directly infer stellar masses and half-mass radii, we find that our galaxies are too large and obey a SMR with too little scatter compared to observations. This discrepancy between the "true" galaxy size and mass and those derived in the mock observation approach is twofold. First, our simulated galaxies have higher and more varied MLRs at a fixed colour than those commonly-adopted, which tends to underestimate their stellar masses compared to their true, simulated values. Second, our galaxies have radially increasing MLR gradients therefore using a single MLR tends to under-predict the mass in the outer regions. Similarly, the true half-mass radius is larger than the half-light radius because the light is more concentrated than the mass. If our simulations are accurate representations of the real universe, then the relationship between galaxy size and stellar mass is even tighter for low-mass galaxies than is commonly inferred from observed relations., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

We introduce TexTile, a novel differentiable metric to quantify the degree upon which a texture image can be concatenated with itself without introducing repeating artifacts (i.e., the tileability). Existing methods for tileable texture synthesis focus on general texture quality, but lack explicit analysis of the intrinsic repeatability properties of a texture. In contrast, our TexTile metric effectively evaluates the tileable properties of a texture, opening the door to more informed synthesis and analysis of tileable textures. Under the hood, TexTile is formulated as a binary classifier carefully built from a large dataset of textures of different styles, semantics, regularities, and human annotations.Key to our method is a set of architectural modifications to baseline pre-train image classifiers to overcome their shortcomings at measuring tileability, along with a custom data augmentation and training regime aimed at increasing robustness and accuracy. We demonstrate that TexTile can be plugged into different state-of-the-art texture synthesis methods, including diffusion-based strategies, and generate tileable textures while keeping or even improving the overall texture quality. Furthermore, we show that TexTile can objectively evaluate any tileable texture synthesis method, whereas the current mix of existing metrics produces uncorrelated scores which heavily hinders progress in the field., Comment: CVPR 2024. Observations show a tight correlation between the stellar mass of galaxies and their gas-phase metallicity (MZR). This relation evolves with redshift, with higher-redshift galaxies being characterized by lower metallicities. Understanding the physical origin of the slope and redshift evolution of the MZR may provide important insight into the physical processes underpinning it: star formation, feedback, and cosmological inflows. While theoretical models ascribe the shape of the MZR to the lower efficiency of galactic outflows in more massive galaxies, what drives its evolution remains an open question. In this letter, we analyze how the MZR evolves over $z=0-3$, combining results from the FIREbox cosmological volume simulation with analytical models. Contrary to a frequent assertion in the literature, we find that the evolution of the gas fraction does not contribute significantly to the redshift evolution of the MZR. Instead, we show that the latter is driven by the redshift-dependence of the inflow metallicity, outflow metallicity, and mass loading factor, whose relative importance depends on stellar mass. These findings also suggest that the evolution of the MZR is not explained by galaxies moving along a fixed surface in the space spanned by stellar mass, gas phase metallicity, and star formation rate., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. A kinematic misalignment of the stellar and gas components is a phenomenon observed in a significant fraction of galaxies. However, the underlying physical mechanisms are not well understood. A commonly proposed scenario for the formation of a misaligned component requires any pre-existing gas disc to be removed, via fly-bys or ejective feedback from an active galactic nucleus. In this Letter, we study the evolution of a Milky Way mass galaxy in the FIREbox cosmological volume that displays a thin, counter-rotating gas disc with respect to its stellar component at low redshift. In contrast to scenarios involving gas ejection, we find that pre-existing gas is mainly removed via the conversion into stars in a central starburst, triggered by a merging satellite galaxy. The newly-accreted, counter-rotating gas eventually settles into a kinematically misaligned disc. About 4.4 (8 out of 182) of FIREbox galaxies with stellar masses larger than 5e9 Msun at z=0 exhibit gas-star kinematic misalignment. In all cases, we identify central starburst-driven depletion as the main reason for the removal of the pre-existing co-rotating gas component, with no need for feedback from, e.g., a central active black hole. However, during the starburst, the gas is funneled towards the central regions, likely enhancing black hole activity. By comparing the fraction of misaligned discs between FIREbox and other simulations and observations, we conclude that this channel might have a non-negligible role in inducing kinematic misalignment in galaxies., Comment: 9 pages; 3 figures; submitted to ApJ Letters

We investigate the formation of dense stellar clumps in a suite of high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations of a massive, star forming galaxy at $z \sim 2$ under the presence of strong quasar winds. Our simulations include multi-phase ISM physics from the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) project and a novel implementation of hyper-refined accretion disk winds. We show that powerful quasar winds can have a global negative impact on galaxy growth while in the strongest cases triggering the formation of an off-center clump with stellar mass ${\rm M}_{\star}\sim 10^{7}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$, effective radius ${\rm R}_{\rm 1/2\,\rm Clump}\sim 20\,{\rm pc}$, and surface density $\Sigma_{\star} \sim 10^{4}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}\,{\rm pc}^{-2}$. The clump progenitor gas cloud is originally not star-forming, but strong ram pressure gradients driven by the quasar winds (orders of magnitude stronger than experienced in the absence of winds) lead to rapid compression and subsequent conversion of gas into stars at densities much higher than the average density of star-forming gas. The AGN-triggered star-forming clump reaches ${\rm SFR} \sim 50\,{\rm M}_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR} \sim 10^{4}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}\,{\rm kpc}^{-2}$, converting most of the progenitor gas cloud into stars in $\sim$2\,Myr, significantly faster than its initial free-fall time and with stellar feedback unable to stop star formation. In contrast, the same gas cloud in the absence of quasar winds forms stars over a much longer period of time ($\sim$35\,Myr), at lower densities, and losing spatial coherency. The presence of young, ultra-dense, gravitationally bound stellar clumps in recently quenched galaxies could thus indicate local positive feedback acting alongside the strong negative impact of powerful quasar winds, providing a plausible formation scenario for globular clusters., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. Feedback from supermassive black holes is believed to be a critical driver of the observed color bimodality of galaxies above the Milky Way mass scale. AGN feedback has been modeled in many galaxy formation simulations, but most implementations have involved simplified prescriptions or a coarse-grained interstellar medium (ISM). We present the first set of FIRE-3 cosmological zoom-in simulations with AGN feedback evolved to $z\sim0$, examining the impact of AGN feedback on a set of galaxies with halos in the mass range $10^{12}-10^{13} M_{\odot}$. These simulations combine detailed stellar and ISM physics with multi-channel AGN feedback including radiative feedback, mechanical outflows, and in some simulations, cosmic rays (CRs). We find that massive (>L*) galaxies in these simulations can match local scaling relations including the stellar mass-halo mass relation and the $M_{\rm BH}$-$\sigma$ relation; in the stronger model with CRs, they also match the size-mass relation and the Faber-Jackson relation. Many of the massive galaxies in the simulations with AGN feedback have quenched star formation and elliptical morphologies, in qualitative agreement with observations. In contrast, simulations at the massive end without AGN feedback produce galaxies that are too massive and form stars too rapidly, are order-of-magnitude too compact, and have velocity dispersions well above Faber-Jackson. Despite these successes, the AGN models analyzed do not produce uniformly realistic galaxies when the feedback parameters are held constant: while the stronger model produces the most realistic massive galaxies, it tends to over-quench the lower-mass galaxies. Understanding what shapes the cold gas component of galaxies, which both provides the fuel for star formation and is strongly affected by the subsequent stellar feedback, is a crucial step towards a better understanding of galaxy evolution. Here, we analyse the HI properties of a sample of 46 Milky Way halo-mass galaxies, drawn from cosmological simulations (EMP-Pathfinder and FIREbox). This set of simulations comprises galaxies evolved self-consistently across cosmic time with different baryonic sub-grid physics: three different star formation models [constant star formation efficiency (SFE) with different star formation eligibility criteria, and an environmentally-dependent, turbulence-based SFE] and two different feedback prescriptions, where only one sub-sample includes early stellar feedback. We use these simulations to assess the impact of different baryonic physics on the HI content of galaxies. We find that the galaxy-wide HI properties agree with each other and with observations. However, differences appear for small-scale properties. The thin HI discs observed in the local Universe are only reproduced with a turbulence-dependent SFE and/or early stellar feedback. Furthermore, we find that the morphology of HI discs is particularly sensitive to the different physics models: galaxies simulated with a turbulence-based SFE have discs that are smoother and more rotationally symmetric, compared to those simulated with a constant SFE; galaxies simulated with early stellar feedback have more regular discs than supernova-feedback-only galaxies. Starburst (SB) galaxies are a rare population of galaxies with star formation rates (SFRs) greatly exceeding those of the majority of star-forming galaxies with similar stellar mass. It is unclear whether these bursts are the result of either especially large gas reservoirs or enhanced efficiencies in converting gas into stars. Tidal torques resulting from gas-rich galaxy mergers are known to enhance the SFR by funneling gas towards the centre. However, recent theoretical works show that mergers do not always trigger a SB and not all SB galaxies are interacting systems, raising the question of what drives a SB. We analyse a large sample of SB galaxies and a mass- and redshift-matched sample of control galaxies, drawn from the FIREbox cosmological volume at z=0-1. We find that SB galaxies have both larger molecular gas fractions and shorter molecular depletion times than control galaxies, but similar total gas masses. Control galaxies evolve towards the SB regime by gas compaction in their central regions, over timescales of about 70 Myr, accompanied by an increase in the fraction of ultra-dense and molecular gas. The driving mechanism behind the SB varies depending on the mass of the galaxy. Massive (Mstar > 1e10 Msun) galaxies undergoing intense, long-lasting SBs are mostly driven by galaxy interactions. Conversely, SBs in non-interacting galaxies are often triggered by a global gravitational instability, that can result in a breathing mode in low-mass galaxies., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Understanding the evolution of satellite galaxies of the Milky Way (MW) and M31 requires modeling their orbital histories across cosmic time. Many works that model satellite orbits incorrectly assume or approximate that the host halo gravitational potential is fixed in time and is spherically symmetric or axisymmetric. We rigorously benchmark the accuracy of such models against the FIRE-2 cosmological baryonic simulations of MW/M31-mass halos. When a typical surviving satellite fell in ($3.4-9.7$ Gyr ago), the host halo mass and radius were typically $26-86$ per cent of their values today, respectively. Most of this mass growth of the host occurred at small distances, $r\lesssim50$ kpc, opposite to dark-matter-only simulations, which experience almost no growth at small radii. We fit a near-exact axisymmetric gravitational potential to each host at $z=0$ and backward integrate the orbits of satellites in this static potential, comparing against the true orbit histories in the simulations. Orbital energy and angular momentum are not well conserved throughout an orbital history, varying by 25 per cent from their current values already $1.6-4.7$ Gyr ago. Most orbital properties are minimally biased, $\lesssim10$ per cent, when averaged across the satellite population as a whole. However, for a single satellite, the uncertainties are large: recent orbital properties, like the most recent pericentre distance, typically are $\approx20$ per cent uncertain, while earlier events, like the minimum pericentre or the infall time, are $\approx40-80$ per cent uncertain. The Radial Acceleration Relation (RAR) connects the total gravitational acceleration of a galaxy at a given radius, $a_{\rm tot}(r)$, with that accounted for by baryons at the same radius, $a_{\rm bar}(r)$. The shape and tightness of the RAR for rotationally-supported galaxies have characteristics in line with MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) and can also arise within the Cosmological Constant + Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) paradigm. We use zoom simulations of 20 galaxies with stellar masses of $M_{\star} \, \simeq 10^{7-11} \, M_{\odot}$ to study the RAR in the \texttt{FIRE-2} simulations. We highlight the existence of simulated galaxies with non-monotonic RAR tracks that ``hook'' down from the average relation. These hooks are challenging to explain in Modified Inertia theories of MOND, but naturally arise in all of our \lcdm-simulated galaxies that are dark-matter dominated at small radii and have feedback-induced cores in their dark matter haloes. We show, analytically and numerically, that downward hooks are expected in such cored haloes because they have non-monotonic acceleration profiles. We also extend the relation to accelerations below those traced by disc galaxy rotation curves. In this regime, our simulations exhibit ``bends'' off of the MOND-inspired extrapolation of the RAR, which, at large radii, approach $a_{\rm tot} \, \approx \, a_{\rm bar} \, /f_{\rm b}$, where $f_{\rm b}$ is the cosmic baryon fraction. Neural material representations are becoming a popular way to represent materials for rendering. They are more expressive than analytic models and occupy less memory than tabulated BTFs. However, existing neural materials are immutable, meaning that their output for a certain query of UVs, camera, and light vector is fixed once they are trained. While this is practical when there is no need to edit the material, it can become very limiting when the fragment of the material used for training is too small or not tileable, which frequently happens when the material has been captured with a gonioreflectometer. In this paper, we propose a novel neural material representation which jointly tackles the problems of BTF compression, tiling, and extrapolation. At test time, our method uses a guidance image as input to condition the neural BTF to the structural features of this input image. Then, the neural BTF can be queried as a regular BTF using UVs, camera, and light vectors. Every component in our framework is purposefully designed to maximize BTF encoding quality at minimal parameter count and computational complexity, achieving competitive compression rates compared with previous work. We study the kinematics of stars both at their formation and today within 14 Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies from the FIRE-2 cosmological zoom-in simulations. We quantify the relative importance of cosmological disk settling and post-formation dynamical heating. We identify three eras: a Pre-Disk Era (typically >8 Gyr ago), when stars formed on dispersion-dominated orbits; an Early-Disk Era (~ 8 - 4 Gyr ago), when stars started to form on rotation-dominated orbits but with high velocity dispersion, sigma_form; and a Late-Disk Era (< 4 Gyr ago), when stars formed with low sigma_form. sigma_form increased with time during the Pre-Disk Era, peaking ~ 8 Gyr ago, then decreased throughout the Early-Disk Era as the disk settled and remained low throughout the Late-Disk Era. By contrast, the velocity dispersion measured today, sigma_now, increases monotonically with age because of stronger post-formation heating for Pre-Disk stars. Importantly, most of sigma_now was in place at formation, not added post-formation, for stars younger than ~ 10 Gyr. We compare the evolution of the three velocity components: at all times, sigma_R,form > sigma_phi,form > sigma_Z,form. Post-formation heating primarily increased sigma_R at ages < 4 Gyr but acted nearly isotropically for older stars. The kinematics of young stars in FIRE-2 broadly agree with the range observed across the MW, M31, M33, and PHANGS-MUSE galaxies. The lookback time that the disk began to settle correlates with its dynamical state today: earlier-settling galaxies currently form colder disks. We employ the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE-2) physics model to study how the properties of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) evolve during galaxy mergers. We conduct a pixel-by-pixel analysis of molecular gas properties in both the simulated control galaxies and galaxy major mergers. The simulated GMC-pixels in the control galaxies follow a similar trend in a diagram of velocity dispersion ($\sigma_v$) versus gas surface density ($\Sigma_{\mathrm{mol}}$) to the one observed in local spiral galaxies in the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) survey. For GMC-pixels in simulated mergers, we see a significant increase of factor of 5 - 10 in both $\Sigma_{\mathrm{mol}}$ and $\sigma_v$, which puts these pixels above the trend of PHANGS galaxies in the $\sigma_v$ vs $\Sigma_{\mathrm{mol}}$ diagram. This deviation may indicate that GMCs in the simulated mergers are much less gravitationally bound compared with simulated control galaxies with virial parameter ($\alpha_{\mathrm{vir}}$) reaching 10 - 100. Furthermore, we find that the increase in $\alpha_{\mathrm{vir}}$ happens at the same time as the increase in global star formation rate (SFR), which suggests stellar feedback is responsible for dispersing the gas. We also find that the gas depletion time is significantly lower for high $\alpha_{\mathrm{vir}}$ GMCs during a starburst event. This is in contrast to the simple physical picture that low $\alpha_{\mathrm{vir}}$ GMCs are easier to collapse and form stars on shorter depletion times. As they grow, galaxies can transition from irregular/spheroidal with 'bursty' star formation histories (SFHs), to disky with smooth SFHs. But even in simulations, the direct physical cause of such transitions remains unclear. We therefore explore this in a large suite of numerical experiments re-running portions of cosmological simulations with widely varied physics, further validated with existing FIRE simulations. We show that gas supply, cooling/thermodynamics, star formation model, Toomre scale, galaxy dynamical times, and feedback properties do not have a direct causal effect on these transitions. Rather, both the formation of disks and cessation of bursty star formation are driven by the gravitational potential, but in different ways. Disk formation is promoted when the mass profile becomes sufficiently centrally-concentrated in shape (relative to circularization radii): we show that this provides a well-defined dynamical center, ceases to support the global 'breathing modes' which can persist indefinitely in less-concentrated profiles and efficiently destroy disks, promotes orbit mixing to form a coherent angular momentum, and stabilizes the disk. Smooth SF is promoted by the potential or escape velocity (not circular velocity) becoming sufficiently large at the radii of star formation that cool, mass-loaded (momentum-conserving) outflows are trapped/confined near the galaxy, as opposed to escaping after bursts. Negative feedback from accreting supermassive black holes is regarded as a key ingredient in suppressing star formation and quenching massive galaxies. However, several models and observations suggest that black hole feedback may have a positive effect, triggering star formation by compressing interstellar medium gas to higher densities. We investigate the dual role of black hole feedback using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations from the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) project, including a novel implementation of hyper-refined accretion-disc winds. Focusing on a massive, star-forming galaxy at $z \sim 2$ ($M_{\rm halo} \sim 10^{12.5} \, {\rm M}_{\odot}$), we show that strong quasar winds with kinetic power $\sim$10$^{46}$ erg/s acting for $>$20$\,$Myr drive the formation of a central gas cavity and can dramatically reduce the star formation rate surface density across the galaxy disc. The suppression of star formation is primarily driven by reducing the amount of gas that can become star-forming, compared to directly evacuating the pre-existing star-forming gas reservoir (preventive feedback dominates over ejective feedback). Despite the global negative impact of quasar winds, we identify several plausible signatures of local positive feedback, including: (1) spatial anti-correlation of wind-dominated regions and star-forming clumps, (2) higher local star formation efficiency in compressed gas near the edge of the cavity, and (3) increased local contribution of outflowing material to star formation. Stars forming under the presence of quasar winds tend to do so at larger radial distances. Our results suggest that positive and negative AGN feedback can coexist in galaxies, but local positive triggering of star formation plays a minor role in global galaxy growth., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures. Low-mass galaxies are highly susceptible to environmental effects that can efficiently quench star formation. We explore the role of ram pressure in quenching low-mass galaxies ($M_{*}\sim10^{5-9}\,\rm{M}_{\odot}$) within 2 Mpc of Milky Way (MW) hosts using the FIRE-2 simulations. Ram pressure is highly variable across different environments, within individual MW haloes, and for individual low-mass galaxies over time. The impulsiveness of ram pressure -- the maximum ram pressure scaled to the integrated ram pressure prior to quenching -- correlates with whether a galaxy is quiescent or star-forming. The time-scale between maximum ram pressure and quenching is anticorrelated with impulsiveness, such that high impulsiveness corresponds to quenching time-scales $<1$ Gyr. Galaxies in low-mass groups ($M_\mathrm{*,host}\sim10^{7-9}\,\rm{M}_{\odot}$) outside of MW haloes experience typical ram pressure only slightly lower than ram pressure on MW satellites, helping to explain effective quenching via group pre-processing. Ram pressure on MW satellites rises sharply with decreasing distance to the host, and, at a fixed physical distance, more recent pericentre passages are typically associated with higher ram pressure because of greater gas density in the inner host halo at late times. Furthermore, the ram pressure and gas density in the inner regions of Local Group-like paired host haloes is higher at small angles off the host galaxy disc compared to isolated hosts. The quiescent fraction of satellites within these low-latitude regions is also elevated in the simulations and observations, signaling possible anisotropic quenching via ram pressure around MW-mass hosts., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, + appendices. We investigate the formation of Milky-Way-mass galaxies using FIRE-2 LCDM cosmological zoom-in simulations by studying the orbital evolution of stars formed in the main progenitor of the galaxy, from birth to the present day. We classify in situ stars as isotropic spheroid, thick-disc, and thin-disc according to their orbital circularities and show that these components are assembled in a time-ordered sequence from early to late times, respectively. All simulated galaxies experience an early phase of bursty star formation that transitions to a late-time steady phase. This transition coincides with the time that the inner CGM virializes. During the early bursty phase, galaxies have irregular morphologies and new stars are born on radial orbits; these stars evolve into an isotropic spheroidal population today. The bulk of thick-disc stars form at intermediate times, during a clumpy-disc ``spin-up'' phase, slightly later than the peak of spheroid formation. At late times, once the CGM virializes and star formation ``cools down," stars are born on circular orbits within a narrow plane. Those stars mostly inhabit thin discs today. Broadly speaking, stars with disc-like or spheroid-like orbits today were born that way. Mergers onto discs and secular processes do affect kinematics in our simulations, but play only secondary roles in populating thick-disc and in situ spheroid populations at z=0. While it is straightforward to count laser-cooled trapped ions by fluorescence imaging, detecting the number of dark ions embedded and sympathetically cooled in a mixed ion crystal is more challenging. We demonstrate a method to track the number of dark ions in real time with single-particle sensitivity. This is achieved by observing discrete steps in the amount of fluorescence emitted from the coolant ions while exciting secular motional resonances of dark ions. By counting the number of fluorescence steps, we can identify the number of dark ions without calibration and without relying on any physical model of the motional excitation. We demonstrate the scheme by detecting H$_2^+$ and H$_3^+$ ions embedded in a Be$^+$ ion Coulomb crystal in a linear radio frequency trap. Our method allows observing the generation and destruction of individual ions simultaneously for different types of ions. Besides high-resolution spectroscopy of dark ions, another application is the detection of chemical reactions in real time with single-particle sensitivity. This is demonstrated in this work.

We present an in-depth analysis of gas morphologies for a sample of 25 Milky Way-like galaxies from the IllustrisTNG TNG50 simulation. We constrain the morphology of cold, warm, hot gas, and gas particles as a whole using a Local Shell Iterative Method (LSIM) and explore its observational implications by computing the hard-to-soft X-ray ratio, which ranges between $10^{-3}$-$10^{-2}$ in the inner $\sim 50 \rm kpc$ of the distribution and $10^{-5}$-$10^{-4}$ at the outer portion of the hot gas distribution. We group galaxies into three main categories: simple, stretched, and twisted. These categories are based on the radial reorientation of the principal axes of the reduced inertia tensor. We find that a vast majority ($77\%$) of the galaxies in our sample exhibit twisting patterns in their radial profiles. Additionally, we present detailed comparisons between 1) the gaseous distributions belonging to individual temperature regimes, 2) the cold gas distributions and stellar distributions, and 3) the gaseous distributions and dark matter (DM) halos. We find a strong correlation between the morphological properties of the cold gas and stellar distributions. Furthermore, we find a correlation between gaseous distributions with DM halo that increases with gas temperature, implying that we may use the warm-hot gaseous morphology as a tracer to probe the DM morphology. Finally, we show gaseous distributions exhibit significantly more prolate morphologies than the stellar distributions and DM halos, which we hypothesize is due to stellar and AGN feedback., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures

We present the first detailed study comparing the populations of stellar streams in cosmological simulations to observed Milky Way dwarf galaxy streams. In particular, we compare streams identified around Milky Way analogs in the FIRE-2 simulations to stellar streams observed by the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S5). For an accurate comparison between the stream populations, we produce mock Dark Energy Survey (DES) observations of the FIRE streams and estimate the detectability of their tidal tails and progenitors. The number and stellar mass distributions of detectable stellar streams is consistent between observations and simulations. However, there are discrepancies in the distributions of pericenters and apocenters, with the detectable FIRE streams, on average, forming at larger pericenters (out to > 110 kpc) and surviving only at larger apocenters (> 40 kpc) than those observed in the Milky Way. We find that the population of high-stellar mass dwarf galaxy streams in the Milky Way is incomplete. Interestingly, a large fraction of the FIRE streams would only be detected as satellites in DES-like observations, since their tidal tails are too low-surface brightness to be detectable. We thus predict a population of yet-undetected tidal tails around Milky Way satellites, as well as a population of fully undetected low surface brightness stellar streams, and estimate their detectability with the Rubin Observatory. Galaxy mergers are crucial to understanding galaxy evolution, therefore we must determine their observational signatures to select them from large IFU galaxy samples such as MUSE and SAMI. We employ 24 high-resolution idealised hydrodynamical galaxy merger simulations based on the "Feedback In Realistic Environment" (FIRE-2) model to determine the observability of mergers to various configurations and stages using synthetic images and velocity maps. Our mergers cover a range of orbital configurations at fixed 1:2.5 stellar mass ratio for two gas rich spirals at low redshift. Morphological and kinematic asymmetries are computed for synthetic images and velocity maps spanning each interaction. We divide the interaction sequence into three: (1) the pair phase; (2) the merging phase; and (3) the post-coalescence phase. We correctly identify mergers between first pericentre passage and 500 Myr after coalescence using kinematic asymmetry with 66% completeness, depending upon merger phase and the field-of-view of the observation. We detect fewer mergers in the pair phase (40%) and many more in the merging and post-coalescence phases (97%). We find that merger detectability decreases with field-of-view, except in retrograde mergers, where centrally concentrated asymmetric kinematic features enhances their detectability. Using a cut-off derived from a combination of photometric and kinematic asymmetry, we increase these detections to 89% overall, 79% in pairs, and close to 100% in the merging and post-coalescent phases. By using this combined asymmetry cut-off we mitigate some of the effects caused by smaller fields-of-view subtended by massively multiplexed integral field spectroscopy programmes., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

We introduce a suite of cosmological volume simulations to study the evolution of galaxies as part of the Feedback in Realistic Environments project. FIREbox, the principal simulation of the present suite, provides a representative sample of galaxies (~1000 galaxies with Mstar > 10^8 Msun at z=0) at a resolution (~20 pc, m_b ~ 6x10^4 Msun) comparable to state-of-the-art galaxy zoom-in simulations. FIREbox captures the multiphase nature of the interstellar medium in a fully cosmological setting (L=22.1 Mpc) thanks to its exceptionally high dynamic range (~10^6) and the inclusion of multi-channel stellar feedback. Here, we focus on validating the simulation predictions by comparing to observational data. We find that simulated galaxies with Mstar < 10^{10.5-11} Msun have star formation rates, gas masses, and metallicities in broad agreement with observations. These galaxy scaling relations extend to low masses (Mstar ~ 10^7 Msun) and follow a (broken) power-law relationship. Also reproduced are the evolution of the cosmic HI density and the HI column density distribution at z~0-5. At low z, FIREbox predicts a peak in the stellar-mass--halo-mass relation, but also a higher abundance of massive galaxies and a higher cosmic star formation rate density than observed, showing that stellar feedback alone is insufficient to reproduce the properties of massive galaxies at late times. The star formation and gas content of satellite galaxies around the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) are depleted relative to more isolated galaxies in the Local Group (LG) at fixed stellar mass. We explore the environmental regulation of gas content and quenching of star formation in $z=0$ galaxies at $M*=10^{5-10}\rm{M}_{\odot}$ around 14 MW-mass hosts from the FIRE-2 simulations. Lower-mass satellites ($M*\lesssim10^7\rm{M}_{\odot}$) are mostly quiescent and higher-mass satellites ($M*\gtrsim10^8\rm{M}_{\odot}$) are mostly star-forming, with intermediate-mass satellites ($M*\approx10^{7-8}\rm{M}_{\odot}$) split roughly equally between quiescent and star-forming. Hosts with more gas in their circumgalactic medium have a higher quiescent fraction of massive satellites ($M*=10^{8-9}\rm{M}_{\odot}$). We find no significant dependence on isolated versus paired (LG-like) host environments, and the quiescent fractions of satellites around MW-mass and LMC-mass hosts from the FIRE-2 simulations are remarkably similar. Environmental effects that lead to quenching can also occur as preprocessing in low-mass groups prior to MW infall. Lower-mass satellites typically quenched before MW infall as central galaxies or rapidly during infall into a low-mass group or a MW-mass galaxy. Most intermediate- to high-mass quiescent satellites have experienced $\geq1-2$ pericentre passages ($\approx2.5-5$ Gyr) within a MW-mass halo. Most galaxies with $M*\gtrsim10^{6.5}\rm{M}_{\odot}$ did not quench before falling into a host, indicating a possible upper mass limit for isolated quenching. The simulations reproduce the average trend in the LG quiescent fraction across the full range of satellite stellar masses. Recent observations and simulations indicate substantial evolution in the properties of galaxies with time, wherein rotationally-supported and steady thin discs (like those frequently observed in the local universe) emerge from galaxies that are clumpy, irregular, and have bursty star formation rates (SFRs). To better understand the progenitors of local disc galaxies we carry out an analysis of three FIRE-2 simulated galaxies with a mass similar to the Milky Way at redshift z=0. We show that all three galaxies transition from bursty to steady SFRs at a redshift between z=0.5 and z=0.8, and that this transition coincides with a rapid (< ~1 Gyr) emergence of a rotationally-supported interstellar medium (ISM).In the late phase with steady SFR, the rotational energy comprises > ~90% of the total kinetic + thermal energy in the ISM, and is roughly half the gravitational energy. By contrast, during the early phase with bursty star formation, the ISM has a quasi-spheroidal morphology and its energy budget is dominated by quasi-isotropic flows including turbulence and coherent inflows/outflows. This result, that rotational support is subdominant at early times, challenges the common application of equilibrium disc models to the high-redshift progenitors of Milky Way-like galaxies. We further find that the formation of a rotation-supported ISM coincides with the formation of a thermal energy-supported inner circumgalactic medium (CGM). Before this transition, the inner CGM is also supported by turbulence and coherent flows, indicating that at early times there is no clear boundary between the ISM and inner CGM., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Increasingly, uncertainties in predictions from galaxy formation simulations (at sub-Milky Way masses) are dominated by uncertainties in stellar evolution inputs. In this paper, we present the full set of updates from the FIRE-2 version of the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) project code, to the next version, FIRE-3. While the transition from FIRE-1 to FIRE-2 focused on improving numerical methods, here we update the stellar evolution tracks used to determine stellar feedback inputs, e.g. stellar mass-loss (O/B and AGB), spectra (luminosities and ionization rates), and supernova rates (core-collapse and Ia), as well as detailed mass-dependent yields. We also update the low-temperature cooling and chemistry, to enable improved accuracy at $T \lesssim 10^{4}\,$K and densities $n\gg 1\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$, and the meta-galactic ionizing background. All of these synthesize newer empirical constraints on these quantities and updated stellar evolution and yield models from a number of groups, addressing different aspects of stellar evolution. To make the updated models as accessible as possible, we provide fitting functions for all of the relevant updated tracks, yields, etc, in a form specifically designed so they can be directly 'plugged in' to existing galaxy formation simulations. We analyze the velocity anisotropy of stars in real and energy space for a sample of Milky Way-like galaxies in the TNG50 simulation. We employ different selection criteria, including spatial, kinematic and metallicity cuts, and make three halo classes ($\mathcal{A}$-$\mathcal{C}$) which show mild-to-strong sensitivity to different selections. The above classes cover 48%, 16% and 36% of halos, respectively. We analyze the $\beta$ radial profiles and divide them into either monotonically increasing radial profiles or ones with peaks and troughs. We demonstrate that halos with monotonically increasing $\beta$ profiles are mostly from class $\mathcal{A}$, whilst those with peaks/troughs are part of classes $\mathcal{B}$-$\mathcal{C}$. This means that care must be taken as the observationally reported peaks/troughs might be a consequence of different selection criteria. We infer the anisotropy parameter $\beta$ energy space and compare that against the $\beta$ radial profile. It is seen that 65% of halos with very mild sensitivity to different selections in real space, are those for which the $\beta$ radial and energy profiles are closely related. Consequently, we propose that comparing the $\beta$ radial and energy profiles might be a novel way to examine the sensitivity to different selection criteria and thus examining the robustness of the anisotropy parameter in tracing stellar kinematics. We compare simulated $\beta$ radial profiles against various observations and demonstrate that, in most cases, the model diversity is comparable with the error bars from different observations, meaning that the TNG50 models are in good overall agreement with observations., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The standard cold dark matter plus cosmological constant model predicts that galaxies form within dark-matter haloes, and that low-mass galaxies are more dark-matter dominated than massive ones. The unexpected discovery of two low-mass galaxies lacking dark matter immediately provoked concerns about the standard cosmology and ignited explorations of alternatives, including self-interacting dark matter and modified gravity. Apprehension grew after several cosmological simulations using the conventional model failed to form adequate numerical analogues with comparable internal characteristics (stellar masses, sizes, velocity dispersions and morphologies). Here we show that the standard paradigm naturally produces galaxies lacking dark matter with internal characteristics in agreement with observations. Using a state-of-the-art cosmological simulation and a meticulous galaxy-identification technique, we find that extreme close encounters with massive neighbours can be responsible for this. We predict that approximately 30 percent of massive central galaxies (with at least 1e11 solar masses in stars) harbour at least one dark-matter-deficient satellite (with 1e8 - 1e9 solar masses in stars). This distinctive class of galaxies provides an additional layer in our understanding of the role of interactions in shaping galactic properties. We use FIRE simulations to study disk formation in z~0, Milky Way-mass galaxies, and conclude that a key ingredient for the formation of thin stellar disks is the ability for accreting gas to develop an aligned angular momentum distribution via internal cancellation *prior* to joining the galaxy. Among galaxies with a high fraction (>70%) of their young stars in a thin disk (h/R~0.1) we find that: (i) hot, virial-temperature gas dominates the inflowing gas mass on halo scales (>~20 kpc), with radiative losses offset by compression heating; (ii) this hot accretion proceeds until angular momentum support slows inward motion, at which point the gas cools to T~10^4 K or less; (iii) prior to cooling, the accreting gas develops an angular momentum distribution that is aligned with the galaxy disk, and while cooling transitions from a quasi-spherical spatial configuration to a more flattened, disk-like configuration. We show that the existence of this "rotating cooling flow" accretion mode is strongly correlated with the fraction of stars forming in a thin disk among a sample of 17 z~0 galaxies spanning a halo mass range of 10^10.5 solar masses to 10^12 solar masses, or a stellar mass range 10^8 solar masses to 10^11 solar masses. Notably, galaxies with a thick disk or irregular morphology do not undergo significant angular momentum alignment of gas prior to accretion and show no correspondence between halo gas cooling and flattening. Our results suggest that rotating cooling flows (or, more generally, rotating subsonic flows) that become coherent and angular momentum-supported prior to accretion onto the galaxy are likely a necessary condition for the formation of thin, star-forming disk galaxies in a LambdaCDM universe., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. Galaxy sizes correlate closely with the sizes of their parent dark matter haloes, suggesting a link between halo formation and galaxy growth. However, the precise nature of this relation and its scatter remains to be understood fully, especially for low-mass galaxies. We analyse the galaxy-halo size relation for low-mass ($M_\star \sim 10^{7-9} {\rm M_\odot}$) central galaxies over the past 12.5 billion years with the help of cosmological volume simulations (FIREbox) from the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. We find a nearly linear relationship between the half-stellar mass galaxy size $R_{1/2}$ and the parent dark matter halo virial radius $R_{\rm vir}$. This relation evolves only weakly since redshift $z = 5$: $R_{1/2} {\rm kpc} = (0.053\pm0.002)(R_{\rm vir}/35 {\rm kpc})^{0.934\pm0.054}$, with a nearly constant scatter $\langle \sigma \rangle = 0.084 [{\rm dex}]$. Whilst this ratio is similar to what is expected from models where galaxy disc sizes are set by halo angular momentum, the low-mass galaxies in our sample are not angular momentum supported, with stellar rotational to circular velocity ratios $v_{\rm rot} / v_{\rm circ} \sim 0.15$. Introducing redshift as another parameter to the GHSR does not decrease the scatter. Furthermore, this scatter does not correlate with any of the halo properties we investigate -- including spin and concentration -- suggesting that baryonic processes and feedback physics are instead critical in setting the scatter in the galaxy-halo size relation. Intrinsic imaging or intrinsic image decomposition has traditionally been described as the problem of decomposing an image into two layers: a reflectance, the albedo invariant color of the material; and a shading, produced by the interaction between light and geometry. Deep learning techniques have been broadly applied in recent years to increase the accuracy of those separations. In this survey, we overview those results in context of well-known intrinsic image data sets and relevant metrics used in the literature, discussing their suitability to predict a desirable intrinsic image decomposition. Although the Lambertian assumption is still a foundational basis for many methods, we show that there is increasing awareness on the potential of more sophisticated physically-principled components of the image formation process, that is, optically accurate material models and geometry, and more complete inverse light transport estimations. We classify these methods in terms of the type of decomposition, considering the priors and models used, as well as the learning architecture and methodology driving the decomposition process.
