11. Preschool Children's Attitudes towards Their Peers with Special Needs

Abstract

This study explores children's attitudes towards their peers with special needs (SN) at a preschool level. A total of 151 children were examined using the "Acceptance Scale for Kindergarteners -- Revised" and social demographic questionnaires to collect information from parents and educators. The research included preschool children (5 years old) attending private preschools in a city of Portugal- Leiria-as well as their corresponding parents and educators. Further, 10 classrooms within preschools participated in the study, with a sample of 151 children, 149 parents, and 14 educators. Internal consistency was calculated, and the Cronbach's [alpha] coefficient for the complete scale was 0.688. Results revealed that the average score associated with children's attitudes was 18.78 (DP = 5.88). Children have more positive attitudes if they are in contact with peers with special needs regardless of the location (p < 0.05). Although children who have contact with peers with special needs in classroom have positive attitudes (p < 0.01) those who have contact in the preschool (outside classroom) have much more (p < 0.01). The results of this study provide insights into children's attitudes and reveal that closer contact with children with special needs benefits peer attitudes.

Abstract

To improve learning outcomes, evidence-based processes suggest that classroom climate is a means of creating more sustainable schools committed to improving the quality of teaching and learning. Therefore, valid measures of classroom climate are necessary to enable comparative studies focused on teachers' perceptions, including important dimensions such as cooperation. As no validated instruments exist for the Portuguese context, we developed and validated the Teachers' Perception of Classroom Climate (TPCC), consisting of five dimensions: teacher support, peer support, academic competence, satisfaction with the school, and cooperation. Following a quantitative research approach, the construct validity was analyzed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis, internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, and test-retest reliability was assessed using univariate and multivariate General Linear Models and Spearman's rho correlations. The study supported the five-factor structure of the TPCC and demonstrated good psychometric properties. Abstract

Chitosan-pectin films with iron oxide (Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by solution casting in order to produce biopolymer based magnetically active materials. Infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated physical interactions between the matrix and nanoparticles, corroborated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results. In addition, thermal characterization suggested that the interactions between chitosan, pectin and the nanoparticles resulted in a less compact structure, influencing the film mechanical properties. Regarding vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM) and electrical analysis, chitosan-pectin films with Fe3O4 nanoparticles showed ferrimagnetic behavior, with an increase of the dielectric constant as the nanoparticle concentration increased. Furthermore, films displayed enhanced antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (Gram-positive) bacteria. Therefore, chitosan-pectin films with Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles provide promising results for active and intelligent food packaging applications.
