Automatic text evaluation metrics are widely used to measure the performance of a Natural Language Generation (NLG) system. However, these metrics have several limitations. This article empirically analyses the problem with current evaluation metrics, such as their lack of ability to measure the semantic quality of a text or their high dependence on the texts they are compared against. Additionally, traditional NLG systems are compared against more recent systems based on neural networks. Finally, an experiment with GPT-4 is proposed to determine if it is a reliable source for evaluating the validity of a text. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that with the current automatic metrics, the improvement of neural systems compared to traditional ones is not so significant. On the other hand, if we analyse the qualitative aspects of the texts generated, this improvement is reflected., Las métricas automáticas de evaluación de texto se utilizan ampliamente para medir el rendimiento de un sistema de Generación de Lenguaje Natural (GLN). Sin embargo, estas métricas tienen varias limitaciones. Este artículo propone un estudio empírico donde se analiza el problema que tienen las métricas de evaluación actuales, como la falta capacidad que tienen estos sistemas de medir la calidad semántica de un texto, o la alta dependencia que tienen estas métricas sobre los textos contra los que se comparan. Además, se comparan sistemas de GLN tradicionales contra sistemas más actuales basados en redes neuronales. Finalmente, se propone una experimentación con GPT-4 para determinar si es una fuente fiable para evaluar la calidad de un texto. A partir de los resultados obtenidos, se puede concluir que con las métricas automáticas actuales la mejora de los sistemas neuronales frente a los tradicionales no es tan significativa. En cambio, si se analizan los aspectos cualitativos de los textos generados, sí que se refleja esa mejora.

Numerical information in written texts impacts their readability and is considered complex for people with cognitive disabilities by the Easy-to-Read guidelines. This paper presents Simple.Text, a rule-based system designed to automatically simplify all numerical expressions deemed complex, with a focus on Rules 19-25 from Section 6.2 of the Easy-to-Read guidelines. The results from the evaluation indicate a high precision and accuracy in numerical phenomena detection and transformation, although with some limitations. This system proves to be an efficient and cost-effective tool for the simplification of numerical expressions., La información numérica en los textos escritos afecta a su legibilidad y las pautas de Lectura Fácil las consideran complejas para las personas con discapacidad cognitiva. Este artículo presenta el sistema Simple.Text, un sistema basado en reglas diseñado para simplificar automáticamente todas las expresiones numéricas consideradas complejas, que aborda específicamente las reglas 19-25 de la Sección 6.2 de Lectura Fácil. Los resultados de la evaluación indican una alta precisión y exactitud en la detección de fenómenos numéricos y en su transformación, aunque con algunas limitaciones. Este sistema demuestra ser una herramienta eficiente y rentable para la simplificación de expresiones numéricas.

The CLEAR.TEXT project (TED2021-130707B-I00) researches how natural language processing technology can support the authoring of accessible content in Spanish for people with cognitive disabilities. Our main objective is to research, implement, deploy, evaluate, and ultimately provide robust technologies for natural language processing to support the authoring of accessible Spanish content for public sector organisations (at local, regional and national level) that is intelligible to people with cognitive disability, thereby widening their inclusion and empowerment in Europe. It is expected to impact positively the quality of life of people with cognitive disabilities, facilitating their access to educational, vocational, cultural, and social opportunities in public sector organisations.

The “Conscious Natural Text Generation” project (CORTEX, grant ref. PID2021-123956OB-I00) investigates how Natural Language Generation (NLG) architectures can be improved so that they can exploit external and commonsense knowledge, and integrate it in a controllable manner (i.e., determining what knowledge to include and how to include it) when generating new text. Our main scientific objective is, therefore, to investigate and propose novel NLG architectures that integrate different types of knowledge to automatically produce reliable, truthful and quality texts, whose information complies with the principles of objectivity and plurality, thereby minimizing bias or manipulated content. The new generation of NLG systems obtained from CORTEX will significantly improve the semantic quality of the generated text, preventing, among other phenomena, the inclusion of invented facts that do not match reality (i.e., hallucination).

In the age of knowledge, the democratisation of information facilitated through the Internet may not be as pervasive if written language poses challenges to particular sectors of the population. The objective of this paper is to present an overview of research-based automatic text simplification tools. Consequently, we describe aspects such as the language, language phenomena, language levels simplified, approaches, specific target populations these tools are created for (e.g. individuals with cognitive impairment, attention deficit, elderly people, children, language learners), and accessibility and availability considerations. The review of existing studies covering automatic text simplification tools is undergone by searching two databases: Web of Science and Scopus. The eligibility criteria involve text simplification tools with a scientific background in order to ascertain how they operate. This methodology yielded 27 text simplification tools that are further analysed. Some of the main conclusions reached with this review are the lack of resources accessible to the public, the need for customisation to foster the individual’s independence by allowing the user to select what s/he finds challenging to understand while not limiting the user’s capabilities and the need for more simplification tools in languages other than English, to mention a few.

La Ingeniería Biomédica surge para solucionar los problemas existentes en el campo de la medicina y sus ramas, haciendo uso de las nuevas tecnologías que van surgiendo. Estas nuevas técnicas nos van a permitir tratar problemas en el ámbito de la salud que deberían tenerse más en cuenta, como son las interacciones entre medicamentos. Este es un tema primordial ante el incremento del consumo de medicamentos por parte de la población, puesto que un aumento de las mismas puede derivar en efectos adversos desconocidos. Esto, junto con la poca información que hay sobre ellas, supone una gran amenaza para la salud pública y la industria farmacéutica. Existen muy pocos estudios relacionados con este problema, y todos ellos se tratan desde un punto de vista bioquímico. Por lo tanto, lo trataremos desde una perspectiva distinta de las que podemos encontrar. Así bien, mediante la semántica de las palabras y el análisis de sentimientos, podremos hallar similitudes entre los medicamentos. Todo ello, aplicando técnicas de procesamiento del lenguaje natural, una tecnología que cada vez cobra más importancia. El procesamiento del lenguaje natural es según IBM “la rama de la informática -más concretamente, de la inteligencia artificial- que se ocupa de dotar a los ordenadores de la capacidad de entender el lenguaje hablado y escrito del mismo modo que los seres humanos. Esta tecnología ha alcanzado un alto nivel en la actualidad gracias a la aplicación de tecnologías como el machine learning (aprendizaje automático), el big data, el internet de las cosas o redes neuronales.” Proponemos un estudio que mediante las diferentes características que podemos detectar de los medicamentos, consigamos un modelo que prediga la relación positiva, negativa o neutra entre ellos. Obstáculos de tipo socioeconómico, ausencia de modelos femeninos y presencia de representaciones sociales estereotipadas hacen difícil incrementar la presencia de las mujeres en el aprendizaje de la tecnología y la ingeniería. La Guía para una docencia universitaria con perspectiva de género de Ciencias de la Computación ofrece propuestas, ejemplos de buenas prácticas, recursos docentes y herramientas de consulta que permiten desmasculinizar este ámbito y visibilizar los modelos femeninos para potenciar el acceso de las mujeres a los estudios de grado.

En este informe científico se identifican los principales retos científicos en los cuales está enmarcado el grupo de investigación en procesamiento del lenguaje y sistemas de información (GPLSI) de la Universidad de Alicante (UA). El objetivo de este informe es establecer un plan de investigación basado en la experiencia y participación en proyectos de investigación, y subrayar los principales retos de futuro que nos permitan definir nuevos proyectos de investigación y desarrollo en los próximos años. La Generación Automática de Lenguaje Natural (GLN) es una tarea compleja que se apoya en numerosos recursos y herramientas del Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural (PLN). La GLN comienza a dar resultados satisfactorios, al menos para ciertos dominios y objetivos, como se puede ver de los resultados obtenidos por parte del GPLSI. No obstante, requiere un importante esfuerzo investigador. En este artículo planteamos, desde la perspectiva que da la investigación realizada hasta ahora en grupo de investigación Procesamiento Natural y Sistemas de Información (GPLSI), futuras líneas de investigación en GLN, incorporando diferentes disciplinas y metas.

Socio-economic barriers, the absence of female role models and the presence of stereotyped social representations make difficult to increase the presence of women in technology and engineering teaching. The Guide of Computer Science to mainstreaming gender in university teaching offers proposals, examples of good practices, teaching resources and consultation tools that will allow to demasculinize this field and make visible female models to enhance women’s access to degree studies in this field of knowledge.

Post-truth is a term that describes a distorting phenomenon that aims to manipulate public opinion and behavior. One of its key engines is the spread of Fake News. Nowadays most news is rapidly disseminated in written language via digital media and social networks. Therefore, to detect fake news it is becoming increasingly necessary to apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) and, more specifically Natural Language Processing (NLP). This paper presents a review of the application of AI to the complex task of automatically detecting fake news. The review begins with a definition and classification of fake news. Considering the complexity of the fake news detection task, a divide-and-conquer methodology was applied to identify a series of subtasks to tackle the problem from a computational perspective. As a result, the following subtasks were identified: deception detection; stance detection; controversy and polarization; automated fact checking; clickbait detection; and, credibility scores. From each subtask, a PRISMA compliant systematic review of the main studies was undertaken, searching Google Scholar. The various approaches and technologies are surveyed, as well as the resources and competitions that have been involved in resolving the different subtasks. The review concludes with a roadmap for addressing the future challenges that have emerged from the analysis of the state of the art, providing a rich source of potential work for the research community going forward.

La actual sociedad de la información obliga a que todos seamos capaces de acceder y comprender la información que Internet nos proporciona. Sin embargo, son muchas las personas que por muchos motivos, edad, discapacidad, aprendizaje de una lengua etc. no pueden llevar a cabo este acceso de la misma manera que la gran mayoría de las personas. Por ello es necesario disponer de entornos intuitivos y accesibles que permitan superar esta barrera. La tarea del alumno consistirá en diseñar una interfaz adecuada a las necesidades de cada usuario, que permita obtener versiones simplificadas y/o enriquecidas del texto deseado. Para ello el alumno se acercará al mundo de las tecnologías del lenguaje humano y a las herramientas que dicha tecnología proporciona para incorporar aquellas que resulten más adecuadas a los objetivos fijados.
