The design of application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) is at the core of modern ultra-high-speed transponders employing advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. This manuscript discusses the motivations for jointly utilizing transmission techniques such as probabilistic shaping and digital sub-carrier multiplexing in digital coherent optical transmissions systems. First, we describe the key-building blocks of modern high-speed DSP-based transponders working at up to 800G per wave. Second, we show the benefits of these transmission methods in terms of system level performance. Finally, we report, to the best of our knowledge, the first long-haul experimental transmission – e.g., over 1000 km – with a real-time 7 nm DSP ASIC and digital coherent optics (DCO) capable of data rates up to 1.6 Tb/s using two waves (2 × 800G).

Recent research points to logistical challenges impeding MDT decision-making and dissatisfaction among members. This study sought to identify different types of logistical issues and how they impacted team processes. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional observational study. Three cancer MDTs (breast, colorectal, and gynaecological) were recruited from UK hospitals. Validated observational instruments were used to measure decision-making (Metrics of Observational Decision-making, MDT-MODe), communication (Bales' Interaction Process Analysis, Bales' IPA), and case complexity (Measure of Case Discussion Complexity, MeDiC), including logistical challenges (Measure of Case Discussion Complexity, MeDiC), across 822 case discussions from 30 videoed meetings. Descriptive analysis and paired samples t tests were used to identify and compare frequency of different types of logistical challenges, along with partial correlations, controlling for clinical complexity of cases, to understand how such issues related to the MDT decision-making and communication. RESULTS: A significantly higher frequency of administrative and process issues (affecting 30 per cent of cases) was seen compared with the frequency of equipment issues (affecting 5 per cent of cases; P < 0.001) and the frequency of the attendance issues (affecting 16 per cent of cases; P < 0.001). The frequency of the attendance issues was significantly higher than the frequency of equipment issues (P < 0.001). Partial correlation analysis revealed that administrative and process issues, including attendance, were negatively correlated with quality of information (r = -0.15, P < 0.001; r = -0.11, P < 0.001), and equipment issues with the quality of contribution to meeting discussion (r = -0.14, P < 0.001). More questioning and answering by MDT members was evident with the administrative and process issues (r = 0.21, P < 0.001; r = 0.19, P < 0.001). Some differences were observed in teams' socioemotional reactions to the administrative and process issues with the gynaecological MDT showing positive correlation with positive socioemotional reactions (r = 0.20, P < 0.001), and the breast cancer MDT with negative socioemotional reactions (r = 0.17, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Administrative and process issues were the most frequent logistical challenges for the studied teams. Where diagnostic results were unavailable, and inadequate patient details provided, the quality of decision-making was reduced.

The opinions of surgical staff who were treating patients with these sensors were collated through in-depth semistructured interviews to thematic saturation. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed via thematic analysis. Results A total of 48 interviews were performed with senior and junior surgeons and senior and junior nurses. The main themes of interest that emerged from the interviews were (1) problems with current monitoring, (2) the anticipated impact of wearables on patient safety, (3) the impact on staff, (4) the impact on patients overall, (5) potential new changes, and (6) the future and views on technology. Conclusions Overall, the feedback from staff who were continuously monitoring surgical patients via wearable sensors was positive, and relatively few concerns were raised. Surgical staff members identify problems with current monitoring and anticipate that sensors will both improve patient safety and be the future of monitoring.

BackgroundEfforts to involve patients in patient safety continue to revolve around professionally derived notions of minimising clinical risk, yet evidence suggests that patients hold perspectives on patient safety that are distinct from clinicians and academics. This study aims to understand how hospital inpatients across three different specialties conceptualise patient safety and develop a conceptual model that reflects their perspectives.MethodsA qualitative semi-structured interview study was conducted with 24 inpatients across three clinical specialties (medicine for the elderly, elective surgery and maternity) at a large central London teaching hospital. An abbreviated form of constructivist grounded theory was employed to analyse interview transcripts. Constant comparative analysis and memo-writing using the clustering technique were used to develop a model of how patients conceptualise patient safety.ResultsWhile some patients described patient safety using terms consistent with clinical/academic definitions, patients predominantly conceptualised patient safety in the context of what made them ‘feel safe’. Patients’ feelings of safety arose from a range of care experiences involving specific actors: hospital staff, the patient, their friends/family/carers, and the healthcare organisation. Four types of experiences contributed to how patients conceptualise safety: actions observed by patients; actions received by patients; actions performed by patients themselves; and shared actions involving patients and other actors in their care.ConclusionsOur findings support the need for a patient safety paradigm that is meaningful to all stakeholders, incorporating what matters to patients to feel safe in hospital. Additional work should explore and test how the proposed conceptual model can be practically applied and implemented to incorporate the patient conceptualisation of patient safety into everyday clinical practice.

In 2020, the world was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which remains a major challenge for most countries today. In Brazil, football clubs' youth academies have faced a disruption of their regular activities. In order to study how the learning cultures of a Brazilian professional football club youth academy have been changed, and the alternatives created by the club's staff within this context, this perspective article aims to analyze how they have structured the Under-15 (U15) team learning culture during social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through document and thematic analysis on a Brazilian professional football club's youth academy program, we promoted a dialogue between the process of adaptation to remote theoretical-tactical teaching with the learning theory proposed by Hodkinson and collaborators. The main theme of analysis of this study was the remote structure of the theoretical-tactical learning and physical training. Challenged with the need to transpose face-to-face activities into a learning culture based on remote communication, the U15 team coaching staff created a process to prescribe physical training, and to teach and discuss football tactical issues with young players during the period of social isolation. This perspective article shows that it is possible for sports institutions to create programs for the development of young athletes within the social isolation/distancing context, considering both theoretical-tactical learning and physical training processes. The adaptation to remote environments as structures for the learning culture seems a challenge, but is also a good alternative for young players to develop their interpretation and perception of football theoretical-tactical issues.

A nutrição mineral equilibrada é fundamental para alcançar elevada produtividade de tubérculos de batata. No entanto, o N pode estimular o crescimento das plantas e, consequentemente, a absorção da maioria dos nutrientes por elas, tornando importante o conhecimento das exigências nutricionais ao longo do ciclo de desenvolvimento da cultura da batata. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o acúmulo e a partição de matéria seca (MS) e nutrientes ao longo do ciclo, bem como a produtividade de tubérculos e a exportação de nutrientes de duas cultivares de batata em função de diferentes manejos da adubação nitrogenada. Foram conduzidos seis experimentos, em condições de campo, sendo três com a cultivar Agata e três com a cultivar Electra. Os experimentos foram realizados em três locais diferentes, localizados no município de Botucatu-SP, durante a “safra de inverno-primavera”, dos anos de 2016 (Locais 1 e 2) e 2017 (Local 3). O Local 1 de condução dos experimentos foi a Fazenda Experimental Lageado, enquanto os Locais 2 e 3 foram áreas particulares de produção de batata. Nos seis experimentos, o delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos por cinco formas de manejo do N: M1: 80 kg ha-1 de N no sulco de plantio + 80 kg ha-1 de N na amontoa [10 dias após a emergência (DAE)] + 80 kg ha-1 de N aos 30 DAE + 80 kg ha-1 de N aos 45 DAE; M2: 80 kg ha-1 de N no sulco de plantio + 80 kg ha-1 de N na amontoa; M3: 160 kg ha-1 de N no sulco de plantio; M4: 80 kg ha-1 de N no sulco de plantio; M5: testemunha (sem aplicação de N). Foram realizadas seis épocas de coletas de plantas, que foram realizadas aproximadamente aos 10, 24, 45, 59, 74 e 85 DAE [24, 39, 60, 74, 89 e 99 dias após o plantio (DAP)]. As duas cultivares apresentaram crescimento lento até o início da fase de formação dos tubérculos, e a partir desse período o acúmulo de MS foi intensificado, com uma fase de estabilização próximo ao final do ciclo. A época em que as plantas de batata apresentaram o pico de crescimento ocorreu por volta dos 55 DAP, enquanto que para os tubérculos ocorreu por volta dos 70 DAP. Os tratamentos com as maiores doses de N proporcionaram maiores incrementos no acúmulo de MS para as duas cultivares, consequentemente, também promoveram incrementos nas quantidades de macronutrientes acumuladas nos tubérculos e na planta inteira. No entanto, a resposta ao N, bem como a influência deste no acúmulo e partição de nutrientes, variaram em função da condição de cultivo (local). Com exceção do S, todos os macronutrientes apresentaram maior época de demanda antes ou coincindiu com o período em que houve a máxima produção de MS. O comportamento das duas cultivares foi semelhante em relação à resposta ao N e absorção dos macronutrientes pela planta e, de maneira geral, a ordem de extração de nutrientes para as duas cultivares foi: K > N > Ca > P > Mg > S, e esta não foi afetada pelo manejo de N. O Ca foi o nutriente que apresentou a menor quantidade exportada pelos tubérculos (4%), independentemente do manejo de N estudado, em relação a quantidade total de nutrientes extraídas pelas plantas das duas cultivares de batata. Em média, 88% do N, 67% do P, 49% do K, 47% do Mg e 51% do S absorvidos pela planta foram exportados pelos tubérculos colhidos. Para alcançar os níveis máximos de produtividade de tubérculos, as cultivares estudadas absorveram entre 136 e 190 kg ha-1 de N e, dessa forma, sob baixa disponibilidade de N, a partição de MS e N para os tubérculos é limitada, reduzindo a produtividade de tubérculos. Nitrogen (N) is the second most taken up nutrient in the potato crop (Solanum tuberosum L.), having a great influence on the development and growth of the crop and tuber yield. Mineral nutrition in a balanced way is essential to achieve high tuber yield. However, N can stimulate the growth of plants and, hence, the uptake of most nutrients by them, making it important to know the nutritional requirements throughout the development cycle of the potato crop. The objective of this study was to assess the uptake and partition of dry matter (DM) and nutrients along the growth cycle, as well as the tuber yield and nutrient removal in two potato cultivars as affected by five N managements. Six field experiments were conducted, tree with the cultivar Agata and three with the cultivar Electra. The experiments were conducted in three different sites, in Botucatu, São Paulo State, during the “winter-spring season”, during 2016 (Site-year 1 and 2) and 2017 (Site-year 3). The Site-year 1 was located at Lageado Experimental Farm, while Site-years 2 and 3 were located in commercial potato fields. In the six experiments, the experimental design was randomized complete blocks, with four replications. The treatments consisted of five N management strategies: M1: 80 kg N ha-1 at planting furrow + 80 kg ha-1 at hilling [10 days after emergence (DAE)] + 80 kg ha-1 at 30 DAE + 80 kg ha-1 at 45 DAE; M2: 80 kg N ha-1 at planting furrow + 80 kg ha-1 at hilling; M3: 160 kg N ha-1 at planting furrow; M4: 80 kg N ha-1 at planting furrow; M5: a control (without N fertilization). Plant samples were collected at 10, 24, 45, 59, 74 and 85 DAE [i.e., 24, 39, 60, 74, 89, and 99 days after planting (DAP)]. The two cultivars showed slow growth until the beginning of the tuber growth stage, and from this period the accumulation of DM was intensified, with a stabilization phase near the end of the cycle. The period when the potato plants showed the peak of growth occurred at around 55 DAP, while for tubers it occurred at around 70 DAP. Treatments with the highest N rates provided greater DM accumulation increments in both cultivars, consequently, also provided increases in uptake of macronutrients in tubers and whole plant. However, the response to N, as well as its influence on nutrient uptake and partition, varied according to the growth condition (site-year). Exception for S, all macronutrients had a higher demand period just before or coincided with the period when there was the maximum production of DM. The performance of the two cultivars was similar in relation to the N response and macronutrients uptake by the plant and, in general, the order of nutrient uptake for the two cultivars was: K > N > Ca > P > Mg > S, and this was not affected by N managements. Calcium was the nutrient that presented the lowest amount removed by the tubers (4%), regardless of the N management studied, in relation to the total amount of nutrients extracted by the plants of the two potato cultivars. On average, 88% of N, 67% of P, 49% of K, 47% of Mg, and 51% of S taken up by the plant were removed by the tubers. To achieve the maximum levels of tuber yields, the cultivars studied took up at least between 136 and 190 kg ha-1 of N and, therefore, under low availability of N, the partition of DM and N for the tubers is limited, reducing tuber yield. In Brazil, soccer championships for children and adolescents are generally organized and divided into categories by age group (usually every two years), with the aim of bringing about greater balance and fairness in the competition. Although they create a certain scenario in which performance capabilities are similar among participants, such division, on the other hand, enables and sustains some conditions that provide unequal learning opportunities. Coupled with socio-cultural and pedagogical issues, it structures a phenomenon called Relative Age Effect (RAE). The objective of this study was to analyze the occurrence of RAE among male and female goalkeepers that competed in the A series of the 2018 Brazilian men’s and women’s soccer championships. Information about the athletes’ birth dates was collected from the official website of the Brazilian Football Confederation. The male group was composed of 68 goalkeepers within a population of 73 individuals, while the female group was composed of 39 of totals of 43 goalkeepers. For statistical analyses, the chi-square test was used. Results reveal that the RAE does not happen in this population, regardless of gender. This may be due to the goalkeeper position in soccer teams being less contested. It is concluded that, for both males and females, date of birth does not seem to influence the offer of opportunities for goalkeepers to reach the elite of Brazilian soccer. RESUMO No Brasil, os campeonatos de futebol para crianças e adolescentes são geralmente organizados e divididos por categorias relacionadas a faixas etárias (normalmente a cada dois anos), com o objetivo de promover maior equilíbrio e justiça na competição. Embora produzam certo cenário de proximidade de capacidades de desempenho entre os participantes, por outro lado, tal divisão comporta e sustenta algumas condições de desigualdade de ofertas de oportunidades de aprendizagem. Isso somado a questões de ordem sociocultural e pedagógica, estrutura um fenômeno denominado Efeito da Idade Relativa (EIR). O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a ocorrência do EIR em goleiros e goleiras dos Campeonatos Brasileiros de futebol masculino e feminino da Série A no ano de 2018. As informações sobre as datas de nascimento dos(a) atletas foram coletadas através do site oficial da Confederação Brasileira de Futebol. O grupo masculino foi composto por 68 goleiros dentro de uma população de 73 indivíduos, enquanto o grupo feminino foi composto por 39 de um total de 43 goleiras. Para a análise estatística foi utilizado o teste qui-quadrado. Os resultados revelam que o EIR não acontece nesta população, em nenhum dos gêneros. Isso pode ocorrer por existir menor concorrência por vagas de goleiros e goleiras em equipes de futebol. Conclui-se que, para o gênero masculino e feminino, a data de nascimento não parece influenciar a oferta de oportunidades para goleiros atingirem a elite do futebol brasileiro.

Introduction: Functional perspective of team decision-making highlights the importance of understanding the relationship between team interaction/communication during a given task, the internal factors that emanate from within a group (e.g., team composition), and the external circumstances (e.g., workload and time pressures). As an underexplored area, we explored these relationships in the context of multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings (aka tumor boards). Materials and methods: Three cancer MDTs with 44 team members were recruited from three teaching hospitals in the United Kingdom. Thirty of their weekly meetings encompassing 822 case reviews were filmed. Validated instruments were used to assess each case: Bales' Interaction Process Analysis that captures frequency of task-oriented and socio-emotional interactions/communication; and Measure of case-Discussion Complexity that captures clinical and logistic complexities. We also measured team size, disciplinary diversity, gender, time-workload pressure, and time-on-task. Partial correlation analysis controlling for team/tumor type and case complexity was used for analysis. Results: Clinical complexity positively correlated with task-oriented communication, e.g., gives opinion (r = 0.51, p < 0.001), and logistical issues with negative socio-emotional interactions, e.g., antagonism (r = 0.14, p < 0.01). Time-workload pressure correlated with reduced task-oriented communication, e.g., gives opinion (r = −0.15, p < 0.01), and positive socio-emotional interactions, e.g., solidarity (r = −0.17, p < 0.001). Time-on-task negatively correlated with task-oriented communication, e.g., asks for orientation (r = −0.16, p < 0.001), and positive socio-emotional interactions, e.g., agrees (r = −0.21, p < 0.001). Team size and disciplinary diversity positively correlated with task-oriented communication, e.g., asks for orientation (r = 0.13, p < 0.001; r = 0.09, p < 0.05), and negative socio-emotional interactions, e.g., antagonism (r = 0.10, p < 0.01; r = 0.08, p < 0.05). Gender balance had no significant relationships (all p > 0.05), however, case reviews with more males present were associated with more tension (r = 0.09, p < 0.01) and less disagreements (r = −0.11, p < 0.01), while when more females present there were more disagreements (r = 0.10, p < 0.01) and less tension (r = −0.11, p < 0.01). Discussion: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to assess the relationship between MDT interaction/communication and the external/internal factors. Smaller size, gender balanced teams with core disciplines present, and streamlining workload to reduce time-workload pressure, time-on-task effects, and logistical issues appear more conducive to building and maintain optimal MDTs. Our methodology could be applied to other MDT-driven areas of healthcare.
