Abstract Background The genes of base excision repair (BER) pathway have been extensively studied in the association with various human cancers. We performed a case-control study to test the association between two common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of XRCC1 gene with human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Methods The genotype analysis of Arg194Trp and Arg399Gln gene polymorphisms for 92 HNSCC patients and 124 controls of cancer free subjects, in Polish population were performed using the PCR-based restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) with endonuclease MspI. Results No altered risk has been found individually for these SNPs, however haplotypes analysis showed high association with head and neck cancer. The highest frequency, according to wild-type of Arg194Arg and Arg399Arg genotypes, was identified for Arg194Trp-Arg399Arg haplotype (OR, 2.96; 95% CI, 1.01–8.80). Conclusion Finally, we identified the combined Arg194Trp-Arg399Arg genotype of base excision repair gene XRCC1 that was associated with HNSCC and may have an impact on identification of a high-risk cancer population.

Introduction. Despite a constant improvement of diagnostic methods, one still faces problems in a daily clinical practice with the assessment of the extent of neoplastic lesion and finding of a proper site to take a specimen for histopathology. It applies particularly to the patients who underwent anticancer therapy. Recently the attention has been focused on tissue autofluorescence involving the effect of UV radiation on neoplastic and dysplastic tissues. Those tissues emit the radiation with different characteristics than the healthy tissue. Aim. In this study we assessed effects of location of pathological lesions on the presence of neoplastic tissue fluorescence. Material and methods. The study group included 47 patients examined with a fiberoscope with the use of both white light and light which induces the emission of tissue autofluorescence. To verify the lesions which showed autofluorescence, specimens for histopathological examination were taken from the emitting sites. Results. It was proven that tissue autofluorescence provided 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity in diagnosing of tumor malignancy. No relation was, however, found between location of pathological lesions and anticancer treatment. Conclusions. We conclude that autofluorescence is a useful, high-sensitive and high-specific method for the detection of neoplastic lesions in the oral cavity, the pharynx and the larynx. Introduction. Current recommendations in medicine emphasise not only medical treatment of the neoplastic diseases but also a need of complex rehabilitation of the patients. Although the olfaction is always impaired after laryngectomy, the rehabilitation of the patients after that type of surgery rarely includes methods that are aimed at restoring the ability to smell. Aim. Subjective assessment of the olfactory organ in patients after larygectomy and an analysis of the course and success rate of rehabilitation of the olfactory sense carried out as a part of routine post-operative care of these patients. Material and methods. The study group included 80 patients (20 women and 60 men), mean age 62,1±8,6 years, after total laryngectomy. All patients filled the questionnaire and underwent both laryngological examination and a 2-week rehabilitation of the olfactory sense intended to enforce air infl ow through the nasal cavity. Results. Seventy two patients (90%) reported a partial or complete loss of smell after laryngectomy. After the rehabilitation, 35 patients (43.8%) noticed an improvement of smelling. The results of olfaction rehabilitation were found to be unaff ected by age, gender, type of voice rehabilitation or chemotherapy. The only factors that adversely aff ected the rate of success of the rehabilitation were radiotherapy and long time since the surgery till the commencement of rehabilitation procedures. Conclusions. Disorders of the olfactory organ are frequent after laryngectomy and could be easily diagnosed by medical interview. Olfactory sense rehabilitation in the patients after laryngectomy should be an obligatory part of the full postlaryngectomy medical care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Demodicidosis is the skin disease which can affect both humans and animals. It is caused by Demodex mites. Demodectic infestation as a single skin tumor is rare and it is likely to be misdiagnosed as a malignant neoplastic disease of the skin. The authors present a case of a 54-year-old patient admitted to the Head And Neck Neoplasms Surgery Department of Medical University in Lodz due to skin ulceration localized on the left frontal part of the hairless skin of the face. Basal cell carcinoma was suspected. Demodex mites were found in the histopatological examination. Demodicidosis should be considered in clinical differentiation of diseases manifesting as multiple or single skin symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) accounts for about 6% of all malignant cancers. In the epidemiology of oral cavity neoplasm, important risk factors include: tobacco smoking, alcohol abuse, bad oral hygiene, papilloma virus infection, riboflavin and iron deficiency., Objective: The objective of the investigation was a synthesis of Cu(II) complex and the evaluation of antioxidative enzymatic barrier in red blood cells of patients with head and neck tumor as well as in the control group., Materials and Methods: For the investigation conduction, a consent of Bioethics Committee number RNN/142/09/KB was obtained. Blood for the examination was obtained from the patients of the Dapartment of Head and Neck Neoplasms Surgery Medical University of Łódź. The experiment was conducted on the group of 40 patients with HNSCC and 40 healthy people, using spectrophotometric method, glutathione peroxidase was marked., Results: The investigation was conducted on the hemolysate obtained from the patients that were divided into two groups - a study group (1 and 2), which consisted of patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer and a control group (1 and 2) - healthy people. A significant statistical result for GPX occurred in control-1 and study-1 group with complex compound Cu(II) (p<0,001)., Conclusions: Presented research prove, that complex compound Cis-dichlorobis(N1-hydroxymethyl-3methylpyrazole-κN2)copper (II) has an impact on the activity of the antioxidative GPX enzyme.

There are still serious diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in case of carcinoma of the larynx, pharynx and oral cavity most often in patients after radiotherapy. An appropriate choice of a site to take a specimen for histopathology is crucial with regard to establish a diagnosis and find an origin of primary lesion and local recurrence. In this regard our attention is focused on those diagnostic methods which enable to detect even small pathologic lesions. Among them is tissue autofluorescence (DAFE). Its advantages are non-invasiveness, high sensitivity and repeatability. The aim of the study was to validate DAFE as a method for early diagnosis and monitoring of treatment efficacy of head and neck cancers. Forty seven patients were included. Each patient had a fibroscopic investigation with the use of white light and light inducing the tissue fluorescence. A specimen for the histopathology was taken from each site which showed fluorescence in order to verify the diagnosis. The presence of neoplastic lesions was always confirmed with histopathology in parallel with the assessment of the lesion area with fluorescence. DAFE is a non-invasive and useful method for the detection of early cancer lesions with the potential to assess the advances of the disease and to monitor its progress.
