Search

Molecular clouds are the most important incubators of young stars clustered in various stellar structures whose spatial extension can vary from a few AU to several thousand AU. Although the reality of these stellar systems has been established, the physical origin of their multiplicity remains an open question. Our aim was to characterise these stellar groups at the onset of their formation by quantifying both the number of stars they contain and their mass using a hierarchical fragmentation model of the natal molecular cloud. We developed a stochastic and predictive model that reconciles the continuous multi-scale structure of a fragmenting molecular cloud with the discrete nature of the stars that are the products of this fragmentation. This model was implemented within a gravo-turbulent fragmentation framework to analytically follow the fragmentation properties along spatial scales using an isothermal and adiabatic equations of state (EOSs). Using an adiabatic EOS we determined a characteristic spatial scale where further fragmentation is prevented, around a few tens of AU. We show that fragmentation is a self-regulated process as fragments tend to become marginally unstable following a $M \propto R$ Bonnor-Ebert-like mass-size profile. Supersonic turbulent fragmentation structures the cloud down to $R \approx 0.1$ pc, and gradually turns into a less productive Jeans-type fragmentation under subsonic conditions so hierarchical fragmentation is a scale dependant process. Our work suggests that pre-stellar objects resulting from gas fragmentation, have to progressively increase their accretion rate in order to form stars. A hierarchical fragmentation scenario is compatible with both the multiplicity of stellar systems identified in Taurus and the multi-scale structure extracted within NGC 2264 molecular cloud.

[Context.] Gaia is limited in the optical down to G~21 mag so it is essential to understand the biases introduced by a magnitude-limited sample on spatial distribution studies. [Aims.] We ascertain how sample incompleteness in Gaia observations of young clusters affects the local spatial analysis tool INDICATE and subsequently the perceived spatial properties of these clusters. [Methods.] We created a mock Gaia cluster catalogue from a synthetic dataset using the observation generating tool MYOSOTIS. The effect of cluster distance, uniform and variable extinction, binary fraction, population masking by the point spread function wings of high-mass members, and contrast sensitivity limits on the trends identified by INDICATE are explored. A comparison of the typical index values derived by INDICATE for members of the synthetic dataset and their corresponding mock Gaia catalogue observations is made to identify any significant changes. [Results.] We typically find only small variations in the pre- and post-observation index values of cluster populations, which can increase as a function of incompleteness percentage and binarity. No significant strengthening, or false signatures, of stellar concentrations are found but real signatures may be diluted. Conclusions drawn about the spatial behaviour of Gaia-observed cluster populations that are, and are not, associated with their natal nebulosity are reliable for most clusters but the perceived behaviours of individual members can change so INDICATE should be used as a measure of spatial behaviours between members as a function of their intrinsic properties (e.g. mass, age, object type), rather than to draw conclusions about any specific observed member. MAORY is the adaptive optics module for ELT providing two gravity invariant ports with the same optical quality for two different client instruments. It enable high angular resolution observations in the near infrared over a large field of view (~1 arcmin2 ) by real time compensation of the wavefront distortions due to atmospheric turbulence. Wavefront sensing is performed by laser and natural guide stars while the wavefront sensor compensation is performed by an adaptive deformable mirror in MAORY which works together with the telescope's adaptive and tip tilt mirrors M4 and M5 respectively., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We present the sharpest and deepest near infrared photometric analysis of the core of R136, a newly formed massive star cluster at the centre of the 30 Doradus star forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We used the extreme adaptive optics of the SPHERE focal instrument implemented on the ESO Very Large Telescope and operated in its IRDIS imaging mode, for the second time with longer exposure time in the H- and K filters. Our aim was to (i) increase the number of resolved sources in the core of R136, and (ii) to compare with the first epoch to classify the properties of the detected common sources between the two epochs. Within the field of view (FOV) of 10.8"x12.1" (2.7pc x3.0pc), we detected 1499 sources in both H and K filters, for which 76% of these sources have visual companions closer than 0.2". The larger number of detected sources, enabled us to better sample the mass function (MF). The MF slopes are estimated at ages of 1, 1.5 and 2 Myr, at different radii, and for different mass ranges. The MF slopes for the mass range of 10-300 solar-mass are about 0.3 dex steeper than the mass range of 3-300 solar-mass, for the whole FOV and different radii. Comparing the JHK colours of 790 sources common in between the two epochs, 67% of detected sources in the outer region (r >3") are not consistent with evolutionary models at 1-2 Myr and with extinctions similar to the average cluster value, suggesting an origin from ongoing star formation within 30 Doradus, unrelated to R136., Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, 6 tables. In the star formation process, the vital impact of environmental factors such as feedback from massive stars and stellar density on the form of the initial mass function (IMF) at low-mass end is yet to be understood. Hence a systematic, highly sensitive observational analysis of a sample of regions under diverse environmental conditions is essential. We analyse the IMF of eight young clusters ($<$5 Myr), namely IC1848-West, IC1848-East, NGC 1893, NGC 2244, NGC 2362, NGC 6611, Stock 8 and Cygnus OB2, which are located at the Galactocentric distance ($R_g$) range $\sim$6-12 kpc along with nearby cluster IC348 using deep near-IR photometry and Gaia DR2. These clusters are embedded in massive stellar environments of radiation strength $log(L_{FUV}/L_{\odot})$ $\sim$2.6 to 6.8, $log(L_{EUV})$ $\sim$42.2 to 50.85 photons/s, with stellar density in the range of $\sim$170 - 1220 stars/pc$^2$. After structural analysis and field decontamination we obtain an unbiased, uniformly sensitive sample of pre-main-sequence members of the clusters down to brown-dwarf regime. The lognormal fit to the IMF of nine clusters gives the mean characteristic mass ($m_c$) and $\sigma$ of 0.32$\pm$0.02 $M_\odot$ and 0.47$\pm$0.02, respectively. We compare the IMF with that of low- and high-mass clusters across the Milky Way. We also check for any systematic variation with respect to the radiation field strength, stellar density as well with $R_g$. The spatial and dynamical structure of star-forming regions can help provide insights on stellar formation patterns. The amount of data from current and upcoming surveys calls for robust and objective procedures to detect structure, so the results can be statistically analysed and different regions compared. We provide the community with a tool able to detect the small scale significant structure, above random expectation, in star-forming regions, which could be the imprint of the stellar formation process. The tool makes use of the one point correlation function and of nearest neighbour statistics to determine the parameters for the DBSCAN algorithm. The procedure successfully detects significant small scale substructures in heterogeneous regions, fulfilling the goals it was designed for, and providing very reliable structures. The analysis of regions close to complete spatial randomness ($Q \in [0.7,0.87]$) shows that, even when some structure is present and recovered, it is hardly distinguishable from spurious detection in homogeneous regions due to projection effects. Interpretation should thus be done with care. For concentrated regions, we detect a main structure surrounded by smaller ones, corresponding to the core plus some Poisson fluctuations around it. We argue that these structures do not correspond to the small compact regions we are looking for. In some realistic cases, a more complete hierarchical, multi-scale analysis would be needed to capture the complexity of the region. We have developed implementations of our procedure, and a catalogue of the NESTs (Nested Elementary STructures) detected by it in four star-forming regions (Taurus, IC 348, Upper Scorpius, and Carina), which are publicly available to the community. We propose a new statistical model that can reproduce the hierarchical nature of the ubiquitous filamentary structures of molecular clouds. This model is based on the multiplicative random cascade, which is designed to replicate the multifractal nature of intermittency in developed turbulence. We present a modified version of the multiplicative process where the spatial fluctuations as a function of scales are produced with the wavelet transforms of a fractional Brownian motion realisation. This simple approach produces naturally a log-normal distribution function and hierarchical coherent structures. Despite the highly contrasted aspect of these coherent structures against a smoother background, their Fourier power spectrum can be fitted by a single power law. As reported in previous works using the multiscale non-Gaussian segmentation (MnGSeg) technique, it is proven that the fit of a single power law reflects the inability of the Fourier power spectrum to detect the progressive non-Gaussian contributions that are at the origin of these structures across the inertial range of the power spectrum. The mutifractal nature of these coherent structures is discussed, and an extension of the MnGSeg technique is proposed to calculate the multifractal spectrum that is associated with them. Using directional wavelets, we show that filamentary structures can easily be produced without changing the general shape of the power spectrum. The cumulative effect of random multiplicative sequences succeeds in producing the general aspect of filamentary structures similar to those associated with star-forming regions. The filamentary structures are formed through the product of a large number of random-phase linear waves at different spatial wavelengths. Aims. To demonstrate that `INDICATE' is a powerful spatial analysis tool which when combined with kinematic data from Gaia DR2 can be used to robustly probe star formation history. Methods. We compared the dynamic & spatial distributions of young stellar objects (YSOs) at various evolutionary stages in NGC 2264 using Gaia DR2 proper motion data and INDICATE. Results. The dynamic & spatial behaviours of YSOs at different evolutionary stages are distinct. Dynamically, Class II YSOs predominately have non-random trajectories that are consistent with known substructures, whereas Class III YSOs have random trajectories with no clear expansion or contraction patterns. Spatially, there is a correlation between the evolutionary stage and source concentration: 69.4% of Class 0/I, 27.9% of Class II, and 7.7% of Class III objects are found to be clustered. The proportion of YSOs clustered with objects of the same class also follows this trend. Class 0/I objects are both found to be more tightly clustered with the general populous/objects of the same class than Class IIs and IIIs by a factor of 1.2/4.1 and 1.9/6.6, respectively. An exception to these findings is within 0.05deg of S Mon where Class III objects mimic the behaviours of Class II sources across the wider cluster region. Our results suggest (i) current YSOs distributions are a result of dynamical evolution, (ii) prolonged star formation has been occurring sequentially, and (iii) stellar feedback from S Mon is causing YSOs to appear as more evolved sources. Conclusions. Designed to provide a quantitative measure of clustering behaviours, INDICATE is a powerful tool with which to perform rigorous spatial analyses. We introduce our new code MYOSOTIS (Make Your Own Synthetic ObservaTIonS) which is designed to produce synthetic observations from simulated clusters. The code can synthesise observations from both ground- and spaced-based observatories, for a range of different filters, observational conditions and angular/spectral resolution. In this paper, we highlight some of the features of MYOSOTIS, creating synthetic observations from young massive star clusters. Our model clusters are simulated using nbody6 code and have different total masses, half-mass radii, and binary fractions. The synthetic observations are made at the age of 2 Myr with Solar metallicity and under different extinction conditions. For each cluster, we create synthetic images of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in the visible (WFPC2/F555W) as well as Very Large Telescopes (VLT) in the nearIR (SPHERE/IRDIS/Ks). We show how MYOSOTIS can be used to look at mass function (MF) determinations. For this aim we re-estimate stellar masses using a photometric analysis on the synthetic images. The synthetic MF slopes are compared to their actual values. Our photometric analysis demonstrate that depending on the adopted filter, extinction, angular resolution and pixel sampling of the instruments, the power-law index of the underlying MFs can be shallower than the observed ones by at least 0.25 dex which is in agreement with the observed discrepancies reported in the literature, specially for young star clusters., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, Accepted to be published in MNRAS

Aims. To present the new novel statistical clustering tool 'INDICATE' which assesses and quantifies the degree of spatial clustering of each object in a dataset, discuss its applications as a tracer of morphological stellar features in star forming regions, and to look for these features in the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372). Results. We successfully recover known stellar structure of the Carina Nebula, including the 5 young star clusters in this region. Four sub-clusters contain no, or very few, stars with a degree of association above random which suggests they may be fluctuations in the field rather than real clusters. In addition we find: (1) Stars in the NW and SE regions have significantly different clustering tendencies, which is reflective of differences in the apparent star formation activity in these regions. Further study is required to ascertain the physical origin of the difference; (2) The different clustering properties between these two regions are even more pronounced for OB stars; (3) There are no signatures of classical mass segregation present in the SE region - massive stars here are not spatially concentrated together above random; (4) Stellar concentrations are more frequent around massive stars than typical for the general population, particularly in the Tr14 cluster; (5) There is a relation between the concentration of OB stars and the concentration of (lower mass) stars around OB stars in the centrally concentrated Tr14 and Tr15, but no such relation exists in Tr16. We conclude this is due to the highly sub-structured nature of Tr16. Conclusions. INDICATE is a powerful new tool employing a novel approach to quantify the clustering tendencies of individual objects in a dataset within a user-defined parameter space. We present a survey for the tightest visual binaries among 0.3-2 Msun members the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). Among 42 targets, we discovered 13 new 0.025-0.15" companions. Accounting for the Branch bias, we find a companion star fraction (CSF) in the 10-60 au range of 21+8/-5%, consistent with that observed in other star-forming regions (SFRs) and twice as high as among field stars; this excess is found with a high level of confidence. Since our sample is dominated by disk-bearing targets, this indicates that disk disruption by close binaries is inefficient, or has not yet taken place, in the ONC. The resulting separation distribution in the ONC drops sharply outside 60\,au. These findings are consistent with a scenario in which the initial multiplicity properties, set by the star formation process itself, are identical in the ONC and in other SFRs and subsequently altered by the cluster's dynamical evolution. This implies that the fragmentation process does not depend on the global properties of a molecular cloud, but on the local properties of prestellar cores, and that the latter are self-regulated to be nearly identical in a wide range of environments. These results, however, raise anew the question of the origin of field stars as the tight binaries we have discovered will not be destroyed as the ONC dissolves into the galactic field. It thus appears that most field stars formed in regions differ from well-studied SFRs in the Solar neighborhood, possibly due to changes in core fragmentation on Gyr timescales., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 pages, 6 figures

Using new proper motion data from recently published catalogs, we revisit the membership of previously identified members of the Upper Scorpius association. We confirmed 750 of them as cluster members based on the convergent point method, compute their kinematic parallaxes and combined them with Gaia parallaxes to investigate the 3D structure and geometry of the association using a robust covariance method. We find a mean distance of $146\pm 3\pm 6$~pc and show that the morphology of the association defined by the brightest (and most massive) stars yields a prolate ellipsoid with dimensions of $74\times38\times32$~pc$^{3}$, while the faintest cluster members define a more elongated structure with dimensions of $98\times24\times18$~pc$^{3}$. We collected the multiplicity data of stars in Taurus to build an up-to-date stellar/multiplicity catalog. After a general study of nearest-neighbor statistics on spatial random distribution, we introduce the one-point correlation $\Psi$ function to complement the pair correlation function and define the spatial regimes departing from randomness in Taurus. We then perform a set of statistical studies to characterize the binary regime that prevails in Taurus. The $\Psi$ function in Taurus has a scale-free trend with a similar exponent as the correlation function at small scale. It extends almost 3 decades up to $\sim 60$ kAU showing a potential extended wide binary regime. This was hidden in the correlation function due to the clustering pattern blending. Distinguishing two stellar populations, single stars versus multiple systems (separation $ \leq 1$ kAU), within Class II/III stars observed at high angular resolution, we highlight a major spatial neighborhood difference between the two populations using nearest-neighbor statistics. The multiple systems are three times more likely to have a distant companion within 10 kAU when compared to single stars. We show that this is due to the presence of most probable physical ultra-wide pairs. These UWPs are biased towards high multiplicity and higher-stellar-mass components at shorter separations. The multiplicity fraction per ultra-wide pair with separation less than 10 kAU may be as high as 83.5 $\pm$ 19.6\%. We suggest that these young pre-main sequence UWPs may be pristine imprints of their spatial configuration at birth resulting from a cascade fragmentation scenario of the natal molecular core. They could be the older counterparts, at least for those separated by less than 10 kAU, to the $\le$ 0.5 Myr prestellar cores/Class 0 multiple objects observed at radio/mm wavelengths.

This paper discusses a new method to generate self-coherent initial conditions for young substructured stellar cluster. The expansion of a uniform system allows stellar sub-structures (clumps) to grow from fragmentation modes by adiabatic cooling. We treat the system mass elements as stars, chosen according to a Salpeter mass function, and the time-evolution is performed with a collisional N-body integrator. This procedure allows to create a fully-coherent relation between the clumps' spatial distribution and the underlying velocity field. The cooling is driven by the gravitational field, as in a cosmological Hubble-Lema\^itre flow. The fragmented configuration has a `fractal'-like geometry but with a self-grown velocity field and mass profile. We compare the characteristics of the stellar population in clumps with that obtained from hydrodynamical simulations and find a remarkable correspondence between the two in terms of the stellar content and the degree of spatial mass-segregation. In the fragmented configuration, the IMF power index is ~0.3 lower in clumps in comparison to the field stellar population, in agreement with observations in the Milky Way. We follow in time the dynamical evolution of fully fragmented and sub-virial configurations, and find a soft collapse, leading rapidly to equilibrium (timescale of 1 Myr for a ~ 10^4 Msun system). The low-concentration equilibrium implies that the dynamical evolution including massive stars is less likely to induce direct collisions and the formation of exotic objects. Low-mass stars already ejected from merging clumps are depleted in the end-result stellar clusters, which harbour a top-heavy stellar mass function., Comment: 22 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We review current theories for the origin of the Stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF) with particular focus on the extent to which the IMF can be considered universal across various environments. To place the issue in an observational context, we summarize the techniques used to determine the IMF for different stellar populations, the uncertainties affecting the results, and the evidence for systematic departures from universality under extreme circumstances. We next consider theories for the formation of prestellar cores by turbulent fragmentation and the possible impact of various thermal, hydrodynamic and magneto-hydrodynamic instabilities. We address the conversion of prestellar cores into stars and evaluate the roles played by different processes: competitive accretion, dynamical fragmentation, ejection and starvation, filament fragmentation and filamentary accretion flows, disk formation and fragmentation, critical scales imposed by thermodynamics, and magnetic braking. We present explanations for the characteristic shapes of the Present-Day Prestellar Core Mass Function and the IMF and consider what significance can be attached to their apparent similarity. In the scope of the star formation process, it is unclear how the environment shapes the initial mass function (IMF). While observations of open clusters propose a universal picture for the IMF from the substellar domain up to a few solar masses, the young association eta Chamaeleontis presents an apparent lack of low mass objects (m<0.1 Msun). Another unusual feature of this cluster is the absence of wide binaries with a separation > 50 AU. We aim to test whether dynamical evolution alone can reproduce the peculiar properties of the association assuming a universal IMF. We use a pure N-body code to simulate the dynamical evolution of the cluster for 10 Myr, and compare the results with observations. A wide range of values for the initial parameters are tested in order to identify the initial state that would most likely lead to observations. In this context we also investigate the influence of the initial binary population on the dynamics and the possibility of having a discontinuous single IMF near the transition to the brown dwarf regime. We consider as an extreme case an IMF with no low mass systems (m<0.1 Msun). The initial configurations cover a wide range of initial density, from 10^2 to 10^8 stars/pc^3, in virialized, hot and cold dynamical state. We do not find any initial state that would evolve from a universal single IMF to fit the observations. Only when starting with a truncated IMF without any very low mass systems and no wide binaries, can we reproduce the cluster core properties with a success rate of 10% at best. Pure dynamical evolution alone cannot explain the observed properties of eta Cha from universal initial conditions. The lack of brown dwarfs and very low mass stars, and the peculiar binary properties (low binary fraction and lack of wide binaries), are probably the result of the star formation process in this association. We use the new minimum spanning tree (MST) method to look for mass segregation in the Taurus association. The method computes the ratio of MST lengths of any chosen subset of objects, including the most massive stars and brown dwarfs, to the MST lengths of random sets of stars and brown dwarfs in the cluster. This mass segregation ratio (Lambda_MSR) enables a quantitative measure of the spatial distribution of high-mass and low-mass stars, and brown dwarfs to be made in Taurus. We find that the most massive stars in Taurus are inversely mass segregated, with Lambda_MSR = 0.70 +/- 0.10 (Lambda_MSR = 1 corresponds to no mass segregation), which differs from the strong mass segregation signatures found in more dense and massive clusters such as Orion. The brown dwarfs in Taurus are not mass segregated, although we find evidence that some low-mass stars are, with an Lambda_MSR = 1.25 +/- 0.15. We report on the results of a time-series photometric survey of M50 (NGC 2323), a ~130 Myr open cluster, carried out using the CTIO 4m Blanco telescope and Mosaic-II detector as part of the Monitor project. Rotation periods were derived for 812 candidate cluster members over the mass range 0.2 <~ M/Msol <~ 1.1. The rotation period distributions show a clear mass-dependent morphology, statistically indistinguishable from those in NGC 2516 and M35 taken from the literature. Due to the availability of data from three observing runs separated by ~10 and 1 month timescales, we are able to demonstrate clear evidence for evolution of the photometric amplitudes, and hence spot patterns, over the 10 month gap, although we are not able to constrain the timescales for these effects in detail due to limitations imposed by the large gaps in our sampling, preventing use of the phase information., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures. IC 348 is a young (t$\sim$3Myr) and nearby (d$\sim$340pc) star forming region in the Perseus molecular cloud. We performed a deep imaging survey using the MEGACAM (z-band) and WIRCAM (JHK and narrowband CH${_4}$ on/off) wide-field cameras on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. From the analysis of the narrowband CH${_4}$ on/off deep images, we report 4 T-dwarf candidates, of which 3 clearly lie within the limits of the IC 348 cluster. An upper limit on the extinction was estimated for each candidate from colour-magnitude diagrams, and found consistent with extinction maps of the cloud. Initial comparisons with T-dwarf spectral models suggest these candidates have a spectral type between T3 and T5, and perhaps later, potentially making these among the lowest mass isolated objects detected in a young star forming region so far.

We report on the results of a time-series photometric survey of NGC 2362, carried out using the CTIO 4m Blanco telescope and Mosaic-II detector as part of the Monitor project. Rotation periods were derived for 271 candidate cluster members over the mass range 0.1 <~ M/Msol <~ 1.2. The rotation period distributions show a clear mass-dependent morphology, qualitatively similar to that in NGC 2264, as would be expected from the age of this cluster. Using models of angular momentum evolution, we show that angular momentum losses over the ~1-5 Myr age range appear to be needed in order to reproduce the evolution of the slowest rotators in the sample from the ONC to NGC 2362, as found by many previous studies. By incorporating Spitzer IRAC mid-IR measurements, we found that 3-4 objects showing mid-IR excesses indicative of the presence of circumstellar discs were all slow rotators, as would be expected in the disc regulation paradigm for early pre-main sequence angular momentum evolution, but this result is not statistically significant at present, given the extremely limited sample size., Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures, 1 table. The Monitor project is a large-scale program of photometric and spectroscopic monitoring of young open clusters using telescopes at ESO and other observatories. Its primary goal is to detect and characterise new low-mass eclipsing binaries, and the first three detected systems are discussed here. We report on the results of an I-band time-series photometric survey of NGC 2547 using the MPG/ESO 2.2m telescope with WFI, achieving better than 1% photometric precision per data point over 14 <~ I <~ 18. Candidate cluster members were selected from a V vs V-I colour magnitude diagram over 12.5 < V < 24 (covering masses from 0.9 Msol down to below the brown dwarf limit), finding 800 candidates, of which we expect ~330 to be real cluster members, taking into account contamination from the field (which is most severe at the extremes of our mass range). Searching for periodic variations in these gave 176 detections over the mass range 0.1 <~ M/Msol <~ 0.9. The rotation period distributions were found to show a clear mass-dependent morphology, qualitatively intermediate between the distributions obtained from similar surveys in NGC 2362 and NGC 2516, as would be expected from the age of this cluster. Models of the rotational evolution were investigated, finding that the evolution from NGC 2362 to NGC 2547 was qualitatively reproduced (given the uncertainty in the age of NGC 2547) by solid body and core-envelope decoupled models from our earlier NGC 2516 study without need for significant modification., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, 1 table. We report the discovery of a low-mass (0.26 +/- 0.02, 0.15 +/- 0.01 Msol) pre-main-sequence eclipsing binary with a 5.3 day orbital period. JW 380 was detected as part of a high-cadence time-resolved photometric survey (the Monitor project) using the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope and Wide Field Camera for a survey of a single field in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) region in V and i bands. The star is assigned a 99 per cent membership probability from proper motion measurements, and radial velocity observations indicate a systemic velocity within 1 sigma of that of the ONC. Modelling of the combined light and radial velocity curves of the system gave stellar radii of 1.19 +0.04 -0.18 Rsol and 0.90 +0.17 -0.03 Rsol for the primary and secondary, with a significant third light contribution which is also visible as a third peak in the cross-correlation functions used to derive radial velocities. The masses and radii appear to be consistent with stellar models for 2-3 Myr age from several authors, within the present observational errors. These observations probe an important region of mass-radius parameter space, where there are currently only a handful of known pre-main-sequence eclipsing binary systems with precise measurements available in the literature., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We performed a deep wide field optical survey of the young (~100-150 Myr) open cluster Blanco1 to study its low mass population well down into the brown dwarf regime and estimate its mass function over the whole cluster mass range.The survey covers 2.3 square degrees in the I and z-bands down to I ~ z ~ 24 with the CFH12K camera. Considering two different cluster ages (100 and 150 Myr), we selected cluster member candidates on the basis of their location in the (I,I-z) CMD relative to the isochrones, and estimated the contamination by foreground late-type field dwarfs using statistical arguments, infrared photometry and low-resolution optical spectroscopy. We find that our survey should contain about 57% of the cluster members in the 0.03-0.6 Mo mass range, including 30-40 brown dwarfs. The candidate's radial distribution presents evidence that mass segregation has already occured in the cluster. We took it into account to estimate the cluster mass function across the stellar/substellar boundary. We find that, between 0.03Mo and 0.6Mo, the cluster mass distribution does not depend much on its exact age, and is well represented by a single power-law, with an index alpha=0.69 +/- 0.15. Over the whole mass domain, from 0.03Mo to 3Mo, the mass function is better fitted by a log-normal function with m0=0.36 +/- 0.07Mo and sigma=0.58 +/- 0.06. Comparison between the Blanco1 mass function, other young open clusters' MF, and the galactic disc MF suggests that the IMF, from the substellar domain to the higher mass part, does not depend much on initial conditions. We have begun a large-scale photometric survey of nearby open clusters and star-forming regions, the Monitor project, aiming to measure time-series photometry for >10,000 cluster members over >10 sq.deg of sky, to find low-mass eclipsing binary and planet systems. We describe the software pipeline we have developed for this project, showing that we can achieve peak RMS accuracy over the entire data-set of better than 2 mmag using aperture photometry, with RMS < 1% over 4 mag, in data from 2 and 4m class telescopes with wide-field mosaic cameras. We investigate the noise properties of our data, finding correlated `red' noise at the 1 - 1.5 mmag level in bright stars, over transit-like timescales of 2.5 hours. An important source of correlated noise in aperture photometry is image blending, which produces variations correlated with the seeing. We present a simple blend index based on fitting polynomials to these variations, and find that subtracting the fit from the data provides a method to reduce their amplitude, in lieu of using techniques such as point spread function fitting photometry which tackle their cause. The Monitor project is a photometric monitoring survey of nine young (1-200Myr) clusters in the solar neighbourhood to search for eclipses by very low mass stars and brown dwarfs and for planetary transits in the light curves of cluster members. It began in the autumn of 2004 and uses several 2 to 4m telescopes worldwide. We aim to calibrate the relation between age, mass, radius and where possible luminosity, from the K-dwarf to the planet regime, in an age range where constraints on evolutionary models are currently very scarce. Any detection of an exoplanet in one of our youngest targets (<=10Myr) would also provide important constraints on planet formation and migration timescales and their relation to proto-planetary disc lifetimes. Finally, we will use the light curves of cluster members to study rotation and flaring in low-mass pre-main sequence stars. The present paper details the motivation, science goals and observing strategy of the survey. We present a method to estimate the sensitivity and number of detections expected in each cluster, using a simple semi-analytic approach which takes into account the characteristics of the cluster and photometric observations, using (tunable) best-guess assumptions for the incidence and parameter distribution of putative companions, and we incorporate the limits imposed by radial velocity follow-up from medium and large telescopes. We use these calculations to show that the survey as a whole can be expected to detect over 100 young low and very low mass eclipsing binaries, and approx. 3 transiting planets with radial velocity signatures detectable with currently available facilities., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, to appear in MNRAS. We report on the results of a V and i-band time-series photometric survey of M34 (NGC 1039) using the Wide Field Camera (WFC) on the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), achieving better than 1% precision per data point for 13 <~ i <~ 17. Candidate cluster members were selected from a V vs V-I colour-magnitude diagram over 14 < V < 24 (0.12 <~ M/Msun <~ 1.0), finding 714 candidates, of which we expect ~ 400 to be real cluster members (taking into account contamination from the field). The mass function was computed, and found to be consistent with a log-normal distribution in dN/dlogM. Searching for periodic variable objects in the candidate members gave 105 detections over the mass range 0.25 < M/Msun < 1.0. The distribution of rotation periods for 0.4 < M/Msun < 1.0 was found to peak at ~ 7 days, with a tail of fast rotators down to periods of ~ 0.8 days. For 0.25 < M/Msun < 0.4 we found a peak at short periods, with a lack of slow rotators (eg. P >~ 5 days, consistent with the work of other authors (eg. Scholz & Eisloffel 2004) at very low masses. Our results are interpreted in the context of previous work, finding that we reproduce the same general features in the rotational period distributions. A number of rapid rotators were found with velocities ~ a factor of two lower than in the Pleiades, consistent with models of angular momentum evolution assuming solid body rotation without needing to invoke core-envelope decoupling., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables, MNRAS accepted

We examine the spatial distribution of brown dwarfs produced by the decay of small-N stellar systems as expected from the embryo ejection scenario. We model a cluster of several hundred stars grouped into 'cores' of a few stars/brown dwarfs. These cores decay, preferentially ejecting their lowest-mass members. Brown dwarfs are found to have a wider spatial distribution than stars, however once the effects of limited survey areas and unresolved binaries are taken into account it can be difficult to distinguish between clusters with many or no ejections. A large difference between the distributions probably indicates that ejections have occurred, however similar distributions sometimes arise even with ejections. Thus the spatial distribution of brown dwarfs is not necessarily a good discriminator between ejection and non-ejection scenarios., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. Includes an.sty file

NGC 2264 is a young (3 Myr), populous star forming region for which our optical studies have revealed a very high density of potential brown dwarf (BD) candidates - 236 in less than 1 sq. deg. - from the substellar limit down to 20 Mjup. Candidate BD were first selected using wide field (I,z) band imaging with CFHT/12K, by reference to current theoretical isochrones. Subsequently, around 50% of the I,z sample were found to have near-infrared (2MASS) photometry, allowing further selection by comparison with the location of DUSTY isochrones in colour-colour diagrams involving combinations of IJHK colours. After rejection of objects with only upper limits to J, six candidates were selected from the I-K,J-H diagram which afforded the best separation of candidate and field objects; of these, 2 also lie close to the model predictions in the I-J,I-K and I-J,H-K plots. After dereddening, all six remain probable very low-mass NGC 2264 members, in spite of their low Av, while a different group of objects are shown to be highly reddened background giants. A further three brighter (at $I$) objects selected by their I-J,I-K colours, lie at the substellar limit and are likely cluster objects, as are 2 intermediate mass objects selected by their I-K and H-K colours.
