Asthma, allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis are multifactorial disorders influenced by various familial and environmental factors. Cord blood IgE levels may be predictive for subsequent allergy onset. Serum IgE assessment has been rarely investigated. This study is aimed at evaluating serum IgE levels during the first year of life and relating to subsequent allergies. Total serum IgE levels were assessed in 102 newborns in the first days of life (2–3) and then again at 3, 5, 6, 11 and 12 months of age. After ten years, paediatricians and general practitioners caring for these children were tracked through the Local Healthcare Agency (LHA) database and asked about possible allergy of their patients, including transient ones. F Serum IgE increased in allergic infants at 1 year of life. The predictive model was significant. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that serum IgE may be predictive of subsequent allergy onset, preferably if assessed at 1 year of age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate the risk of fetal growth restriction (FGR) associated with first-trimester maternal serum concentrations of pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) and free beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG). Methods: A longitudinal study of 2,178 women who underwent first-trimester evaluation of serum PAPP-A and free beta-hCG. FGR was defined as a decrement of the fetal abdominal circumference to below the 10th percentile of our standard growth curve in the presence of Doppler signs of impaired placental perfusion. Logistic regression was used to compute multivariable odds ratios and the estimated prevalences of outcomes associated with first-trimester serum marker concentrations. Results: The prevalences of small for gestational age (SGA, <10th percentile birth-weight) neonates and FGR were significantly higher among women with serum PAPP-A concentrations below the 10th percentile than in controls: 40/206 compared to 183/1,928, for SGA, adjusted odds ratio = 2.1, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.4-3.03; 24/75 compared to 182/1,900, for FGR, adjusted odds ratio = 3.9, 95% CI 2.3-6.5. The adjusted prevalences of FGR and SGA among women with simultaneous low first-trimester values of PAPP-A and free beta-hCG were 0.21 (95% CI 0.13-0.33) and 0.26 (95% CI 0.17-0.36), respectively. Conclusion: Low first-trimester maternal serum PAPP-A concentrations are significantly associated with reduced fetal size and increased risk of FGR with Doppler signs of impaired placental perfusion. The aim of this study was to verify through relative survival (an estimate of cancer-specific survival) the true prognostic factors of colorectal cancer. The study involved 506 patients who underwent locally radical resection. All the clinical, histological and laboratory parameters were prognostically analysed for both overall and relative survival. This latter was calculated from the expected survival of the general population with identical age, sex and calendar years of observation. Univariate and multivariate analyses were applied to the proportional hazards model. Liver metastases, age, lymph node involvement and depth of bowel wall involvement were independent prognosticators of both overall and relative survival, whereas carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was predictive only of relative survival. Increasing age was unfavourably related to overall survival, but mildly protective with regard to relative survival. Three out of the five prognostic factors identified are the cornerstones of the current staging systems, and were confirmed as adequate by the analysis of relative survival. The results regarding age explain the conflicting findings so far obtained from studies considering overall survival only and advise against the adoption of absolute age limits in therapeutic protocols.
