Abstract

As the IP traffic observed on network operator’s backbones keeps increasing year by year, the analysis of NetFlow data metered for this traffic becomes a burden for centralized traffic monitoring solutions. Thus, SCRIPT proposes a decentralized accounting architecture and framework for NetFlow storage and analysis, which is flexible to allow for the development of distributed traffic analysis applications. SCRIPT mechanisms organize multiple PCs or AXP (Application Extension Platform) cards in an analysis network and route NetFlow records according to rules imposed by the analysis application. In turn, the evaluation of the prototype has shown that (a) this approach allows for a linear increase of the number of NetFlow records, which can be processed with the number of nodes in the SCRIPT deployment network, and (b) deploying SCRIPT on router-embedded AXP cards is improving an already existing infrastructure with the capability of storage and processing of NetFlow records.

Abstract

Analysis of IP traffic is highly important, since it determines the starting point of many network management operations, such as intrusion detection, network planning, network monitoring, or accounting and billing. One of the most utilized metering data formats in analysis applications are IP (Internet Protocol) flow records. With the increase of IP traffic, such traffic analysis applications need to cope with a constantly increasing number of flow records. Typically, centralized approaches to IP traffic analysis have scalability problems, which are addressed by replacing existing hardware with more powerful CPUs and faster memory. In contrast, this paper developed and implemented SCRIPT (Scalable Real-time IP Flow Record Analysis), which defines a scalable analysis framework that can be used to distribute flow records to multiple nodes performing traffic analysis in order to balance the overall workload among those nodes. Due to its generic design, the framework developed can be extended and used to distribute other metering data, such as packet headers, payloads, or accounting records.

Abstract

Charging for IP-based communications determines the overall term for metering or monitoring, accounting, pricing, charge calculation, and billing. These five actions are detailed in this chapter to provide a clear view on their interdependencies as well as their relations to distributed computing. Since an ubiquitous computing approach does require communication means between all entities involved, the provisioning of these communication channels is supported typically by commercial service providers— covering network, transport, and value-added services. Thus, the legal and contractual relationships between customers and providers as well as technological choices of protocols, mechanisms, and parameters define the area of interest here.

Current high-speed links become a challenge to traditional real-time analysis of IP traffic. Major research was done in finding sampling methods for IP packets and IP flows in order to reduce the amount of data that needs to be processed while keeping a high level of result accuracy. Although sampling proves to be a promising approach, there may be application sce-narios foreseen, in which decisions may not be based on sampled data, e.g., usage based charging or intrusion detection systems. This paper proposes a distributed architecture for collecting, analysing and storing of IP traffic data. This approach aims to provide a high level of automation, self-configuration, and self-healing so that new nodes may be easily added or removed to/from the analysis network. The proposed solution makes use of unused processing power existing in the network (such as customer's PCs of an ISP) to achieve real-time analysis of IP traffic for high-speed network links. Abstract

Obtaining information about the usage of network ressources by individual users forms the basis for establishing network billing systems or network management operations. While there are already widely used accounting techniques available for measuring IP network traffic on a per-host basis, there is no adequate solution for accounting per-user network activities on a multiuser operating system. This work provides a survey on existing approaches to this problem and identifies requirements for a user-based IP accounting module. It develops a suitable software architecture LINUBIA and proposes a prototypical implementation for the Linux 2.6 operating system, which is capable of providing per-user accounting for both the IPv4 and the IPv6 protocol. Abstract

This thesis investigated how performance of today's IP traffic metering and analysis applications can be improved by moving from a centralized, high-performance infrastructure, which executes these tasks, to distributed mechanisms, which combine available resources of multiple devices. The results achieved show that distributed IP traffic metering and analysis leverages bottleneck problems. The distributed IP traffic approach DITA does not solve all problems of handling such large amounts of data in very short time by itself, but proposes an orthogonal approach to existing solutions. DITA revelas that combining distributed IP traffic metering and analysis reaches better and higher performance sampling and aggregation mechanisms, which do provide a very flexible and the open solution to analyzing IP traffic in future high-speed networks. This has been achieved by the facts that all mechanisms designed for DITA — and their prototypical implementations — are based on standard protocols and open-source technologies. DITA determines the first approach to distributed IP traffic metering and analysis known today, which (a) addresses the different bottlenecks of traffic analysis in a generic way, and (b) is self-organizing, offering a scalable solution to regular traffic increases.

Abstract

The adoption of the Internet Protocol (IP) by a number of non-IP network operators, such as telecom or cable TV operators, opens the path toward new business models. IP will allow operators to provide a unified wired as well as wireless access to a wide range of services to their users. Additionally, using the same communication protocols and standard interfaces, enables different providers to coordinate any type of resources in virtual organizations (VO) and supports the composition of services aggregated across multiple domains. On one hand, such an open environment requires new business models to be adopted by the involved parties. On the other hand, grid middleware infrastructure supporting integrated accounting, charging, pricing, and billing across multiple domains has to be in place to facilitate service provisioning in multiple VOs. Based on the relevant set of requirements derived, a new and extended A4C Architecture (Authentication, Authorization, Accounting, Auditing, Charging) has been developed, implemented, and evaluated for mobile grids providing pervasive access to knowledge.
