14. Applying a Contest to Improve Learning in the Information Systems Development--An Interdisciplinary and Extracurricular Approach

Abstract

Contests are usually applied in the academic environment to simulate real professional situations that require from the participants a more pro-active attitude than the one shown in conventional coursework. Although they are commonly applied in the scope of a unique course, the contest described here was an extracurricular experience applied in an Information System undergraduate program. The evaluation of the contest is also presented; the objective was to assess the role of the contest as a tool to bring together interdisciplinary subjects, complementary to the traditional disciplinary structure of the program curriculum. The results indicate that a significant portion of the participants noticed increase in their knowledge after the contest, which is verified by statistical tests. However, students from the first stages received more benefits, probably because such students were more motivated and had more available time to be involved in the contest activities.

Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a common but complex disorder to diagnose since there are no imaging or blood tests that can detect ASD. Several techniques can be used, such as diagnostic scales that contain specific questionnaires formulated by specialists that serve as a guide in the diagnostic process. In this paper, Machine Learning (ML) was applied on three public databases containing AQ-10 test results for adults, adolescents, and children; as well as other characteristics that could influence the diagnosis of ASD. Experiments were carried out on the databases to list which attributes would be truly relevant for the diagnosis of ASD using ML, which could be of great value for medical students or residents, and for physicians who are not specialists in ASD. The experiments have shown that it is possible to reduce the number of attributes to only 5 while maintaining an Accuracy above 0.9. In the other Database to maintain the same level of Accuracy, the fewer attribute numbers were 7. The Support Vector Machine stood out from the others algorithms used in this paper, obtaining superior results in all scenarios.

Abstract

La conservación ex situ y a largo plazo de las semillas se basa en la respuesta a la desecación y a las temperaturas de almacenamiento, lo que constituye el objetivo de este trabajo. El contenido de humedad de las semillas frescas se determinó en estufa a 103°C y pesando las muestras a intervalos regulares hasta peso constante. La tolerancia a la desecación y a las temperaturas de almacenamiento se evaluaron con 5 experimentos de germinación: semillas frescas (10-12%CH); 3-5% CH; y 3-5% CH almacenadas tres meses a 25, 5 y -20ºC, con dos tratamientos: control y escarificación. El CH fue del 11% en ambas especies. En P. nigra, el porcentaje de germinación de las semillas escarificadas fue mayor al 80% en todos los experimentos realizados, mientras que el poder germinativo de las semillas del control disminuyó con la desecación y el almacenamiento.
