Discussions of the problematic relationship between AI and society have recently only been heightened. These discussions, nevertheless, remain partial until they take into account how we live AI technologies in the unremarkable circumstances of our everyday affairs. In arguing for the importance of such a noticing, this article centers on the internet-of-things and associated digital voice assistants (DVAs). These commercial social robots, designed as conversation-oriented devices, manifest their incompleteness in their need for other voices. Paying attention to that relationality at an embodied scale of analysis brings up our involvement in situated interactional production, while also manifesting its reciprocal character. This not only questions the conviction of DVA designers that these gadgets generate effects of presence in relation to an intentional mind, but it also resists a parallel return to the individual that more often transpires in the discussions of the problematic relationship between AI and society. We practice this resistance by evoking efforts in distributed cognition and the extended mind hypothesis, but we also go beyond the instrumentalist reasoning that primarily recognizes the world as carved into tools that can extend our cognition. We thereby contest the rationalization of our use of these technologies in terms of efficiency and convenience and propose a close noticing of situated engagement with voiced AI as a mode of intervening.

The electromagnetic wavefront diffracted by an object carries information about the shape of the object from which the wave was emitted. Being able to record the phase and intensity of such a wave thus allows to reconstruct the object from the information carried by the wave, even if the object is no longer present. Among the reconstruction techniques, holography plays a big part. However the waves may experience a great variety of distortions on their way from the object to the measurement apparatus. Thus being able to shape the wavefront at will is key in holography. Micromirror light modulators are powerful tools for that matter and are well known for holographic applications. This paper explores the fundamental principles for digitally reconstructing a precise image of an object, but also for digitally correcting an imperfectly shaped wavefront, by exploiting the diffraction properties of light on a reflective surface. The methods presented here have been implemented as part of practical work for 2nd year students at the Ecole Polytechnique (last year of undergraduate program).

Abstract Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) is a major issue for the mechanical integrity of high-strength alloys exposed to hydrogen-rich environments, with diffusion and trapping of hydrogen being critical phenomena. Here, the role of microstructure on hydrogen diffusion, trapping and embrittlement in additively manufactured (AM) and wrought Inconel 718 is compared, revealing the key role played by dislocation cells. Trapping behaviour in hydrogen-saturated alloys is analysed by thermal desorption spectroscopy and numerical simulations. A high density of hydrogen traps in cell walls, attributed to dense dislocations and Laves phases, are responsible for the local accumulation of hydrogen, causing significant loss in strength, and triggering cracking along dislocation cell walls. The influential role of dislocation cells alters fracture behaviour from intergranular in the wrought alloy to intragranular for the AM alloy, due to the large proportion of dislocation cells in AM alloys. In addition, the cellular network of dislocations accelerates hydrogen diffusion, enabling faster and deeper penetration of hydrogen in the AM alloy. These results indicate that the higher HE susceptibility of nickel superalloys is intrinsically associated with the interaction of hydrogen with dislocation walls.

Abstract Introduction Medical thoracoscopy is a minimally invasive and safe procedure mostly performed for unexplained exudative pleural effusions but may be considered for pneumothorax (PNX). Methods This retrospective study included participants affected by PNX who underwent medical thoracoscopy with talc poudrage at a single academic hospital from 2008 to 2021. The primary endpoint was the observation of complete radiographical lung re-expansion and absence of air supply from the chest drain within 7 days of medical thoracoscopy. The secondary endpoint was achieving no recurrence of ipsilateral PNX at 24 months post-discharge. Results A total of 95 patients affected by primary spontaneous PNX (PSP), secondary spontaneous PNX (SSP), iatrogenic, and traumatic PNX were enrolled. An additional procedure was required by 17.89% of patients, and only one patient with SSP required subsequent surgery. Recurrence of PNX occurred on the same side within 24 months after discharge in 9.47% of patients, with a median time to recurrence of 13.5 months. The PSP group was significantly more likely to achieve the primary endpoint. Pleural morphology was significantly associated with reaching the primary endpoint, while receiving a cumulative dose of talc greater than or equal to 4 g during hospitalization was associated with a lower risk of meeting it. Receiving a cumulative dose of talc greater than or equal to 4 g led in all cases to the achievement of the secondary endpoint. Patients with iatrogenic and traumatic PNX had an excellent prognosis in both the short- and long-term evaluation. Conclusion Medical thoracoscopy is an effective procedure for treating PNX in the acute setting in selected cases while preventing long-term relapses. Large prospective clinical studies are needed to support and better define the role of medical thoracoscopy in current clinical practice.

The As4S6 molecule, although theoretically predicted and supposed to occur in amorphous arsenic sulfides, was missing in the reported structures of crystalline As chalcogenides; the thermodynamic stable phase for this stoichiometry, in fact, is that of the mineral orpiment, which shows a layered structural arrangement based on trigonal AsS3 pyramids. Here we report the first possible occurrence of the As4S6 molecule together with the other known As4Sn (n=3, 4, 5) molecules randomly replacing each other in the crystalline structure of a new monoclinic product obtained by the light-induced alteration of the mineral alacranite, As8S9. Our findings are based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. The fact that As4S6 formed in a crystalline light-induced alteration product could indicate a heretofore unknown role of this molecule in the photoinduced changes of the physico-chemical properties of both bulk glasses and thin films in the As–S system, widely studied in optics and optoelectronics.

Serious criticism of didactic intellectualism in the past resulted in a range of pedagogical approaches to Work-based Learning as a response to this issue. A comparative overview of the development of work-based learning over time is presented in this article. Additionally, a temporal approach to work-based and workplace learning is explored. We see the change of WBL from being one part of individual pedagogical approaches to becoming part of policy recommendations. Finally, a discussion of the didactic features of contemporary Work-based Learning clearly positions it as a didactic model. The paper stresses the importance of WBL as a didactic model that is appropriate in all student-centred classrooms, regardless of the level of education.

The present paper addresses the age issue in the context of learning English as a foreign language in instructional settings. Our attention has been directed towards the examination of potential differences in students' perceptions of their foreign language teacher and motivation in relation to age. A total of 592 participants attending higher grades of elementary school participated in the research. The results have shown that students' perception of English language teacher characteristics and competences varies in relation to age. Although elementary school students perceive their language teacher to be the most competent in the area of instructional competences, younger students seem to put more emphasis on teacher's personal characteristics over professional competences. The study also indicates differences in motivation, with an accentuated decline in relation to students' age. The study offers a valuable information for teachers and policy makers and emphasizes the need for further adjustment of teaching methodology to various age groups.

Badacze reprezentujący robotykę społeczną projektują swoje roboty tak, aby funkcjonowały one jako społeczni agenci w interakcji z ludźmi oraz z innymi robotami. Jakkolwiek nie przeczymy, że fizyczne cechy robota oraz jego oprogramowanie są istotne dla osiągniecia tego celu, pragniemy zwrócić uwagę na znaczenie organizacji przestrzennej oraz procesów koordynacji interakcji robota z ludźmi. Interakcje te badaliśmy, prowadząc obserwacje w [„rozszerzonym”] laboratorium robotyki społecznej. W tekście dokonujemy multimodalnej analizy interakcyjnej dwóch momentów praktyki projektantów robotów społecznych. Opisujemy kluczową rolę samych robotyków oraz grupy małych dzieci nieposługujących się jeszcze językiem, które zaangażowano w proces projektowania robota. Twierdzimy tu, że społeczny charakter projektowanej maszyny jest w istotny sposób powiązany z subtelnością ludzkich zachowań w laboratorium. To ludzkie zaangażowanie w proces tworzenia społecznego sprawstwa robota nie jest kwestią woli indywidualnych osób. Raczej jest tak, że dopasowania maszyn i ludzi wymaga dynamika sytuacyjna, w której osadzony jest robot.

Optical fibre sensors (OFS) are worthy of interest for measurements in nuclear reactor thanks to their unique features, particularly compact size and remote multi-point sensing for some of them. But besides non negligible constraints associated with the high temperature environment of the experiments of interest, it is well known that the performances of OFS can be severely affected by high level of radiations. The Radiation Induced Attenuation (RIA) in the fibre is probably most known effect, which can be to some extent circumvented by using rad hard fibres to limit the dynamic loss. However, when the fast neutron fluence reaches 1018 to 1019 n/cm2, the density and index variations associated to structural changes may deteriorate drastically the performances of OFS even if they are based on rad hard fibres, by causing direct errors in the measurements of temperature and/or strain changes. The aim of the present study is to access the effect of nuclear radiations on the Fabry Perot (FP) and of Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors through the comparison of measurements made on these OFS - or part of them - before and after irradiation [1]. In the context of development of OFS for high irradiation environment and especially for Material Testing Reactors (MTRs), Sake 2 experiment consists in an irradiation campaign at high level of gamma and neutron fluxes conducted on samples of fibre optics – bare or functionalised with FBG. The irradiation was performed at two levels of fast neutron fluence: 1 and 3.1019 n/cm2 (E>1MeV), at 250°± 25°C, in the SCK•CEN BR2 reactor (Mol Belgium). An irradiation capsule was designed to allow irradiation at the specified temperature without active control. The neutron fluence was measured with activation dosimeters and the results were compared with MCPN computations. Investigation of bare samples gives information on the density changes, while for the FBGs both density and refractive index perturbation are involved. Some results for bare fibres were reported recently. In this paper, we will focus on the measurements made on FBGs that have been manufactured by different laboratories on SMF 28 fibers: CEA, University of St-Etienne and University of Mons. Tested gratings have been written using various conditions (type of fibre, of laser, writing wavelength, power density, post writing thermal annealing,…), leading to various behaviours after Sake 2 irradiation. Bragg wavelength and reflectivity have been measured before and after irradiation thanks to a special mounting at the same temperature. It appears that a change in the shape after irradiation of the Bragg peak disturb the retrieval of the Bragg wavelength. The measurements show that for nearly all gratings the Bragg peak remains visible after the irradiation, and that Radiation Induced Bragg Wavelength Shifts (RI-BWSs) vary from few pm (equivalent to an error of less than 1°C for a temperature sensor) to nearly 1 nm (equivalent to 100°C) depending of the FBG types. High RI-BWSs could indeed be expected when considering the huge refractive index variation and compaction of the bare fibre samples that have been measured by other techniques. Post writing thermal annealing is confirmed as a key parameter in order to obtain a more radiation tolerant FBG. Our results show that specific annealing regimes allow making FGBs suitable to perform temperature measurements in a MTR experiment.

This study presents a systematic literature review to understand the applications, benefits, and challenges of digital assistants (DAs) in production and logistics tasks. Our conceptual framework covers three dimensions: information management, collaborative operations, and knowledge transfer. We evaluate human-DA collaborative tasks in the areas of product design, production, maintenance, quality management, and logistics. This allows us to expand upon different types of DAs, and reveal how they improve the speed and ease of production and logistic work, which was ignored in previous studies. Our results demonstrate that DAs improve the speed and ease of workers' interaction with machines/information systems in searching, processing, and demonstrating. Extant studies describe DAs with different levels of autonomy in decision-making; however, most DAs perform tasks as instructed or with workers' consent. Additionally, we observe that workers find it more intuitive to perform tasks and acquire knowledge when they receive multiple sensorial cues (e.g. auditory and visual cues). Consequently, future research can explore how DAs can be integrated with other technologies for robust multi-modal assistance such as eye tracking and augmented reality. This can provide customised DA support to workers with disabilities or conditions to facilitate more inclusive production and logistics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The combination of an ultra-low-loss optical fiber sensitive to ionizing radiation and an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) is investigated to explore the feasibility of a single-ended distributed radiation detector. The peculiarity of the tested fiber resides in its regenerative high radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) response in the infrared spectrum (1310 nm), which returns to a low value once the irradiation has ended, combined to its sensitivity, highly increasing with the dose rate. In this work, only some sections of the fiber line were irradiated with 100 kV X-rays at room temperature, to prove the spatially resolved radiation detection capabilities of the system. The transient RIA response of the fiber was characterized at different pre-irradiation doses. A pre-irradiation treatment was shown to stabilize the optical fiber response, improving its RIA vs. dose rate linearity and repeatability. This improved response, in terms of radiation quantification, comes at the cost of a lower detection threshold. This work lays the bases for a distributed radiation detector, with some capabilities in dose rate evaluation.

Conventional T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pancreas can vary significantly due to factors such as scanner differences and pulse sequence variations. This review explores T1 and T2 mapping techniques, modern MRI methods providing quantitative information about tissue relaxation times. Various T1 and T2 mapping pulse sequences are currently under investigation. Clinical and research applications of T1 and T2 mapping in the pancreas include their correlation with fibrosis, inflammation, and neoplasms. In chronic pancreatitis, T1 mapping and extracellular volume (ECV) quantification demonstrate potential as biomarkers, aiding in early diagnosis and classification. T1 mapping also shows promise in evaluating pancreatic exocrine function and detecting glucose metabolism disorders. T2* mapping is valuable in quantifying pancreatic iron, offering insights into conditions like thalassemia major. However, challenges persist, such as the lack of consensus on optimal sequences and normal values for healthy pancreas relaxometry. Large-scale studies are needed for validation, and improvements in mapping sequences are essential for widespread clinical integration. The future holds potential for mixed qualitative and quantitative models, extending the applications of relaxometry techniques to various pancreatic lesions and enhancing routine MRI protocols for pancreatic pathology diagnosis and prognosis.

Tumours of the central nervous system (CNS) represent the most common group of solid tumours in children and adolescents up to the age of 18 years. They comprise several biological entities, subgroups, and subtypes. These subtypes and additional factors, including age at diagnosis, location, stage, or genetic characteristics of the tumours result in a very heterogeneous spectrum of treatment-relevant strata for risk-adapted multimodal treatment recommendations, clinical courses, and long-term outcomes. Multidisciplinary teams with highly experienced members are needed to treat these children and adolescents to achieve the best possible outcome in the short and long-term. This is particularly important for the new CNS tumour entities with no established standard of care. On behalf of the Brain Tumour Group of the European Society for Paediatric Oncology, we summarize the key statements of the involved disciplines that need to cooperate in the diagnosis and risk-adapted treatment of children with CNS tumours: neuroradiology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, radiotherapy, endocrinology, neuro-ophthalmology, and quality of survival professionals, covering what should be considered standard clinical practice for diagnostic assessments, treatment modalities, and follow-up of children with CNS-tumours.

Vjerovanja o učenju stranoga jezika predstavljaju kognitivni aspekt stava te kao takva imaju snažan utjecaj na učenikovo ponašanje, motivaciju i djelovanje u kontekstu formalnoga učenja stranoga jezika. Cilj ovoga rada jest ispitati vjerovanja studenata o učenju engleskoga kao stranoga jezika kao i razmotriti potencijalne implikacije tih vjerovanja za nastavnu praksu. Za ispitivanje vjerovanja korišten je upitnik BALLI (Beliefs about Language Learning) autorice Horwitz (1985). Vjerovanja su ispitana na temelju analize pet komponenata: prirodna sklonost, težina učenja, priroda učenja, učenje i komunikacijske strategije te motivacija. Rezultati pokazuju kako studenti vjeruju u postojanje prirodnih sklonosti za učenje jezika, percipiraju engleski jezik kao ne veoma teškim te pridaju važnost poznavanju vokabulara i razvoju komunikacijskih vještina naspram poznavanju kulture jezika cilja, gramatičkih pravila te prevođenja. Podjednak naglasak na tradicionalne i suvremene strategije učenja ukazuje na potencijalni raskorak između reformnih tendencija i nastavne prakse.

Background and Aims: Hypoalbuminemia, as defined by serum albumin (SA) levels ≤35 g/L, is associated to venous and arterial thrombosis in general population and in patients at risk of cardiovascular disease. It is unknown if SA ≤35 g/L is also associated to portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in cirrhosis. Methods: Cirrhotic patients enrolled in the Portal vein thrombosis Relevance On Liver cirrhosis: Italian Venous thrombotic Events Registry (PRO-LIVER) study (n = 753), were followed-up for 2 years to assess the risk of PVT, that was diagnosed by Doppler ultrasonography. Child-Pugh classes, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, presence of hepatocellular carcinoma and laboratory variables including SA, D-dimer, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured at baseline. Results: SA ≤35 g/L was detected in 52% of patients. A logistic multivariate regression analysis showed that higher Child-Pugh class, hepatocellular carcinoma and thrombocytopenia were significantly associated to SA ≤35 g/L. In a subgroup of patients where data regarding hs-CRP and D-dimer were available, SA ≤35 g/L was inversely associated with hs-CRP and D-dimer. During the follow-up, a total of 61 patients experienced PVT. A Kaplan Meier survival analysis showed SA ≤35 g/L was associated to increased risk of PVT compared to SA >35 g/L (P = .005). A multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that male sex, lower platelet count, and SA ≤35 g/L remained associated to PVT after adjusting for confounding factors. Conclusion: Cirrhotic patients with SA ≤35 g/L are at higher risk of experiencing PVT compared to those with SA >35 g/L and could be considered as potential candidates to anticoagulant prophylaxis for PVT prevention.

Abstract Archival boxes are used as a preventive measure to control the microenvironment in museums and archives storages. However, their efficiency in protecting valuable artefacts from fluctuations in relative humidity (RH) is not yet fully understood. In this study, the environmental performance of different archival boxes with different configurations (size, design, presence of holes/paper material, cardboard types, surface modification) was included in the evaluation of internal environment (RH). The effectiveness of archival boxes on reducing relative humidity fluctuations was investigated by testing various properties of boxes and boards, such as air exchange rates (AER), moisture sorption and water vapour transmission rates (WVTR). While most cardboard boxes showed only a limited buffering against the humidity ingress, strategies such as surface modification limited the interaction of a box with the external environment, resulting in a more stable internal environment. Material and box properties, such as moisture sorption, AER and WVTR proved to be useful quantitative tools for assessing the environmental performance of the selected archival boxes.

In this note we explore the structure of the diffusion metric of Coifman-Lafon determined by fractional dyadic Laplacians. The main result is that, for each \(t\gt 0\), the diffusion metric is a function of the dyadic distance, given in \(\mathbb{R}^+\) by \(\delta(x,y) = \inf\{|I|\colon I \text{ is a dyadic interval containing } x \text{ and } y\}\). Even if these functions of \(\delta\) are not equivalent to \(\delta\), the families of balls are the same, to wit, the dyadic intervals.
