Abstract

The scarcity of property labels remains a key challenge in materials informatics, whereas materials data without property labels are abundant in comparison. By pretraining supervised property prediction models on self-supervised tasks that depend only on the "intrinsic information" available in any Crystallographic Information File (CIF), there is potential to leverage the large amount of crystal data without property labels to improve property prediction results on small datasets. We apply Deep InfoMax as a self-supervised machine learning framework for materials informatics that explicitly maximises the mutual information between a point set (or graph) representation of a crystal and a vector representation suitable for downstream learning. This allows the pretraining of supervised models on large materials datasets without the need for property labels and without requiring the model to reconstruct the crystal from a representation vector. We investigate the benefits of Deep InfoMax pretraining implemented on the Site-Net architecture to improve the performance of downstream property prediction models with small amounts (<10^3) of data, a situation relevant to experimentally measured materials property databases. Using a property label masking methodology, where we perform self-supervised learning on larger supervised datasets and then train supervised models on a small subset of the labels, we isolate Deep InfoMax pretraining from the effects of distributional shift. We demonstrate performance improvements in the contexts of representation learning and transfer learning on the tasks of band gap and formation energy prediction. Having established the effectiveness of Deep InfoMax pretraining in a controlled environment, our findings provide a foundation for extending the approach to address practical challenges in materials informatics.

Abstract

UNLABELLED: In the phase III JAVELIN Ovarian 200 trial, 566 patients with platinum-resistant/refractory ovarian cancer were randomized 1:1:1 to receive avelumab alone, avelumab plus pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD), or PLD alone. Cardiac monitoring was included for all patients. We report left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) data from the trial. Grade ≥3 cardiac adverse events (AEs) occurred in 4 (2.1%), 1 (0.5%), and 0 patients in the avelumab, combination, and PLD arms, respectively. LVEF decreases of ≥10% to below institutional lower limit of normal at any time during treatment were observed in 1 (0.8%), 3 (1.9%), and 2 (1.5%) patients, respectively; 4 had subsequent assessments, and these showed transient decreases. No patient had a cardiovascular AE related to LVEF decrease. This analysis is, to our knowledge, the first analysis of LVEF in patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors. Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to assess potential challenges, prioritize adaptations, and develop an implementation and research approach to integrate and study a parenting intervention for mothers in recovery from substance use disorders in community-based home-visiting programs. METHOD: An explanatory mixed-methods design, guided by process mapping with Failure Modes and Effects Analysis tools, and an Advisory Panel of 15 community members, identified potential implementation challenges and recommended solutions for the proposed intervention within five pre-specified domains. Thematic content analysis identified themes from detailed field notes. RESULTS: The Advisory Panel identified 44 potential challenges across all domains. They determined that the recruitment domain was most likely to create challenges. Regarding the potential challenges, two cross-domain themes emerged: (1) development of mistrust in the community and (2) difficulty initiating and sustaining engagement. Potential solutions and adaptations to protocols are reported. CONCLUSION: Mistrust in the community was cited as a potentially important challenge for the delivery and study of an evidence-based parenting intervention for mothers in recovery through home-visiting programs. Adaptations to research protocols and intervention delivery strategies are needed to prioritize the psychological safety of families, particularly for groups that have been historically stigmatized.

5. Site-Net: Using global self-attention and real-space supercells to capture long-range interactions in crystal structures

Abstract

Site-Net is a transformer architecture that models the periodic crystal structures of inorganic materials as a labelled point set of atoms and relies entirely on global self-attention and geometric information to guide learning. Site-Net processes standard crystallographic information files to generate a large real-space supercell, and the importance of interactions between all atomic sites is flexibly learned by the model for the prediction task presented. The attention mechanism is probed to reveal Site-Net can learn long-range interactions in crystal structures, and that specific attention heads become specialized to deal with primarily short- or long-range interactions. We perform a preliminary hyperparameter search and train Site-Net using a single graphics processing unit (GPU), and show Site-Net achieves state-of-the-art performance on a standard band gap regression task., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures

12. Ecological Rationality and the Cognitive Process Theory of Writing

Abstract

In this paper, I have argued that Flower and Hayes' (1981) Cognitive Process Theory of Writing might be enriched by the insights that derive from Simon's (1969) understanding of artifice as an element of the environment and from Todd and Gigerenzer's (2007) construct of ecological rationality. I have used Simon's parable of the ant to explain the apparent disjunction between a recursive writing process that executes short-term problem-solving strategies serially and the textual product that is characterized by linearity and over-all coherence. Similarly, I have used Todd and Gigerenzer's (2007) construct of ecological rationality to explain how effective writers manage the complex interplay of their changing goals, on one hand, and the demands of an emerging text on the other.

Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis is a prevalent and variably debilitating condition, often leading to referral for possible total knee replacement when symptoms align with radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis. However, the severity of radiographic findings does not consistently correlate with patient-reported pain levels. We explore the intricacies of patient selection for knee replacement surgery and address the complex interplay between symptoms, radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis, and realistic outcome expectations following surgery. We also emphasize the need for a nuanced understanding of the relationship between structural changes and subjective patient experience. The age factor in total knee replacement candidacy has historically led to arbitrary age-based restrictions regarding referral, with patients advised to wait until older ages. Recent studies have challenged this notion and suggested that patients younger than 55 years can experience positive outcomes. Additionally, considerations for posttraumatic arthritis versus other arthritic causes highlight the importance of individualized preoperative counseling. Implant survival and revision rates are affected by patient age at time of surgery, activity level, and BMI, among other factors. Based on patient-reported outcomes, patients with elevated BMI, despite higher rates of complications, do benefit, barring complication. Patient satisfaction following total knee replacement is dependent on various factors, including age, activity level, severity of osteoarthritis, and gender, which highlights the need for individualized counseling, considering diverse patient profiles and potential predicators of dissatisfaction. Specifically addressing the concerns of active patients requires counseling regarding postoperative activity restrictions, considering the balance between pain relief, improved function, and potential for increased risk of revision surgery. The choice between partial and total knee replacement is explored, with a focus on indications and survivorship. In guiding primary care physicians on when to refer patients, patient-reported outcome measures such as the Oxford Knee Score can be helpful, but further practical thresholds for surgical consideration must be considered. Maximizing nonoperative management prior to or while awaiting consultation is always beneficial and recommended. Ultimately, knee osteoarthritis is a complex medical pathology that is most effectively addressed through individualized patient counseling, shared decision making, and collaboration between primary care physicians and orthopaedic surgeons to optimize outcomes and satisfaction while navigating knee replacement options and timing of surgical intervention. 50. HPV-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma in Northern Ireland : a molecular and population based study

Abstract

Oropharyngeal cancers are increasing in incidence worldwide, and many of these tumours are caused by the human papillomavirus. This is a DNA virus that integrates into the host's genetic information, and can cause cancer through suppression of important tumour suppressors such as p53. TP53 is a gene that codes for p53, and in many cancers of the head and neck this is thought to be mutated. In NI, limited emigration provides an excellent context for research that depends on long-term follow up of patients. This study assesses molecular and demographic characteristics of patients and their tumours, in order to build a comprehensive of the emerging disease of oropharyngeal cancer. Methods Retrospective review of head and neck pathology reports was conducted for a twelve-year period, and all primary oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas were included. Detailed clinical and pathological information was gathered about patients and their tumours, and tissue microarrays were created for analysis of protein markers. In addition, DNA and RNA were extracted from a cohort of tumours, to study the tumour suppressor p53, and its family member p63. Different HPV testing methods were compared with one another, in order to ascertain the most reliable test for diagnosing presence of active virus in the oropharynx. Outcomes It was determined that testing for HPV is necessary in tumours arising in the oropharynx, and the best testing method for this appears to be detection of HPV DNA using chromatin in situ hybridisation. p53 mutations were found at a rate comparable with other studies in the head and neck, however the mutation profile appeared to be slightly different to that of other anatomical subsites. Studies of TP63 gene expression revealed that high levels of delta-Np63 are associated with disease recurrence and decreased survival, suggesting a role for this in tumour invasion and metastasis.
