Specimens of a caligid copepod (Siphonostomatoida) were found on the gills of the hairfin lookdown Selene brevoortii (Gill) (Carangidae) from off Mazatlán, Sinaloa (north-western Mexico). This material represents a new species of Caligus, C. selenecola sp. nov., and is assigned to the diaphanus species group. Within this group, only C. kapuhili Lewis, 1967, C. laticaudus Shiino, 1960, C. macrurus Heller, 1865, and C. selenecola sp. nov., have been described with a reduced outer spine 1 on the second exopodal segment of leg 1. These four species can be readily separated by the relative length of the abdomen, and the presence/absence of a process on the myxal area of the female maxilliped, the sternal furca, the postantennal process, and the spiniform process on the basal antennary segment. Fish–parasite systems could be subject to two scenarios under climate change: (i) increased water temperature might enhance parasite metabolism, allowing the parasite to spread rapidly; (ii) parasitism could decrease if the optimal temperature for growth and transmission is exceeded. Sea lice are parasitic copepods commonly found on marine fish in tropical regions, yet their biology remains poorly investigated. In this study, we analyzed the changes in infection levels and the transcriptomic response of the tropical sea louse Caligus confusus to two seasonal seawater temperatures (30 °C, "warm", and 21 °C, "cold"). The prevalence of C. confusus was significantly higher in the colder water. A de novo transcriptomic analysis of C. confusus, the first for a tropical sea louse, revealed 426 over-expressed and 1402 down-expressed transcripts at the lower temperature. In particular, we observed over-expression of transcripts encoding vitellogenins (vit-1, vit-2, vit-4, and vit-6) and matrix metalloproteinases (mmp-2 and mmp-9), which are involved in reproduction and development. These results suggest that the cold tropical season physiologically favors C. confusus and that low temperature favors embryo development, which might ultimately lead to a higher prevalence. Thread herrings (Opisthonema spp.) are economically important fish species in the Tropical Eastern Pacific. Knowledge of the parasitofauna of commercially exploited species is useful as it can increase our understanding of fish biology and ecology. However, our knowledge of the parasites of Opisthonema spp. is limited. During a fisheries exploration survey in April 2022, samples of Opisthonema bulleri and O. libertate were collected from three oceanographic stations in the Gulf of Tehuantepec in the Mexican Pacific. Parasitological analysis of these materials uncovered four parasite species: Myosaccium ecaude (Trematoda), Cribromazocraes sp. (Monogenea), Pseudoterranova sp. (Nematoda), and an unidentified crustacean of the family Pennellidae (Copepoda). All these species appeared rarely, except for M. ecaude, which reached a prevalence of 100%. The median intensity of M. ecaude infection was significantly higher in O. bulleri than in O. libertate. We analyzed the relationship between parasitic infection intensity and three host traits (fork length, body weight, and age). Only body weight showed a significant positive association with intensity. Future studies are required to analyze the possible effects of seasonality, locality, and host ontogeny on the occurrence of M. ecaude in thread herrings in the Tropical Eastern Pacific. The Pacific thread herring, Opisthonema libertate, is a fishery resource in the eastern tropical Pacific, yet its population dynamics are poorly understood. The aims of this work were to document the metazoan parasite species in O. libertate from the Gulf of California in Mexico, determine latitudinal changes in their infection levels, and assess their potential as biological tags. Six parasitic species were identified: Myosaccium ecaude and Parahemiurus merus digeneans, Cribromazocraes cf. travassosi and Mazocraeoides georgei monogeneans, Pseudoterranova sp. nematodes, and Lepeophtheirus sp. copepods. The monogenean and copepod species are reported for the first time in O. libertate. Many fish were infected with digeneans, and there was a rare occurrence of other parasites. While the prevalence and median intensity of M. ecaude and P. merus significantly varied among sampling localities, a multivariate analysis revealed a distinct separation between some localities; these results suggest that individual fish form several discrete populations. However, the utility of these parasites as biological tags will be further probed because they cannot satisfy all requirements for good biological tags. The present results might be helpful in complementing other techniques to determine the movement and stock structure of O. libertate, albeit with certain limitations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Parasitic copepods of the family Caligidae, the so-called sea lice, may be deleterious to marine or brackish finfish aquaculture. To date, biological and ecological studies of sea lice have been mostly restricted to species from cold or temperate regions. In Mexico there are some records of sea lice species on marine fishes; however, the research regarding their biology and ecology has been scarce. It is possible that a high biodiversity of sea lice is distributed in coastal waters of Mexico; therefore, their significance as pathogenic parasites should increase. The purpose of this review is to outline the current knowledge of the life cycle, host location, ecology, effect on fish health, and control strategies of sea lice in order to establish supportive basis for natural resource management and control of parasites and diseases of marine fish cultured in Mexico. A new species of the genus Nitocra Boeck, 1865, Nitocra taylori sp. n. is described from the St Lucia Estuary, Africa's largest estuarine lake. It is also suggested that Nitocra sewelli husmanni Kunz, 1976 and N. reducta fluviatilis Galhano, 1968 are granted full species rank as N. husmanni stat. n. Kunz, 1976 and N. fluviatilis stat. n. Galhano, 1968. Nitocra taylori sp. n. appears to be closely related to N. husmanni. Unfortunately, the original description of the micro-characters of the species lacks the detail needed to make reliable comparisons between species of the genus Nitocra. The main differences observed are the number of spinules along the posterior margin of the anal operculum, length ratio of the exopod and endopod of the first swimming leg, shape of the outer spine on the male third endopodal segment of the third swimming leg, number of segments of the male antennule, relative length of the setae on the male baseoendopod of the fifth leg, shape of the male exopod of the fifth leg, relative length of the two setae of the male sixth leg, and shape of the female baseoendopod of the fifth leg. The current distribution of N. taylori sp. n. is limited to the lake part of the estuary, an area which is most severely affected by the current freshwater deprivation crisis. During closed mouth conditions, these regions (South/North Lake and False Bay) are characterized by low water levels, high salinities and high turbidity levels. This suggests that N. taylori sp. n. may favor these environmental conditions and the significant correlations found between the abundance of N. taylori sp. n. and salinity and turbidity confirm this to a degree. Nitocra taylori sp. n. individuals are also able to withstand a wide range of fluctuations. They were recorded at turbidities ranging from 2 to 102 NTU, temperatures from 20.9 to 34.8 °C and salinity levels ranging from 9.81 to 53.7 psu. However, in the current state of the system, salinity and temperature levels in the northern regions frequently exceed this value. Continued freshwater deprivation may, therefore, further limit the distribution range of this species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
