10. Seeding the Garden: Civic Transformation and Youth of Color Stepping into Their Power

Abstract

The commitment to the construction of a diverse and equitable democracy is even more imperative than ever given our changing demographics, growing inequality, and the eroding of gains of the civil rights movement. For instance, the criminalization of communities of color, with Blacks imprisoned five times more than Whites, and Hispanics nearly twice as likely as Whites to be imprisoned, according to the US Census. Since the 2013 Supreme Court decision in "Shelby County v. Holder," which invalidated the coverage formula in the Voting Rights Act and limited the law's enforcement tools, voter suppression has been on the rise. In 2018, according to the FBI, hate crimes hit a sixteen-year high. All of these examples indicate the need for drastic change to reconstitute a nation that embodies its ideals. The most direct path to that is through community empowerment and civic action--especially for communities of color. While the authors' paths to civic engagement had different beginnings, the critical frameworks showing discrepancies between their lived experiences and prominent narratives about American democracy, as well as mentorship and opportunities to practice engagement, were all crucial for their success. In this article, they share their own stories of civic transformation and how they are seeds in a garden that cultivates and harvests the fruits of a diverse democracy.

Abstract

Krill oil (KO) and the impregnation process to enrich food matrices with bioactive compounds have become relevant. The impregnation process of KO microcapsules into Golden apple tissue was evaluated in this study. A KO emulsion was used at different temperatures to impregnate Golden apple slices. The results show that an increase in temperature causes greater removal of water and penetration of the KO microcapsules. At 60 °C, the volume changes of the samples were evident, obtaining the highest concentration of astaxanthin. Through the impregnation process, it is possible to produce a new food product with potential functional properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: During the activity of manual handling and transport of loads, forced postures are adopted for a long time that mainly affects the spine and upper limbs, generating symptoms that include pain, stiffness, limitation in movement, joint inflammation, numbness, among others. increasing the rates of absenteeism and morbidity of musculoskeletal origin. This research aimed to identify the biomechanical hazard associated with the appearance of musculoskeletal disorders in dispatch workers in a sugar mill during the year 2019-2020. Methods: 14 male employees were evaluated, with an age range between 35 and 48 years, to whom the INSHT load lifting guide method was applied to determine the level of biomechanical risk and the perception of symptoms was evaluated. through the Nordic Questionnaire. Results: It was evidenced, a non-tolerable risk level since the workers handle loads that excessively exceed the acceptable weight suggested for this work, and the presence of musculoskeletal symptoms in the cervical, lumbar, shoulders and wrists. Conclusions: The workers presented a high level of biomechanical danger, which can cause occupational diseases and consequently, functional limitation or physical disability, if corrective measures are not taken in time, both in the weight of the load and in the very development of work activity., Introducción: Durante la actividad de manipulación y transporte manual de cargas, se adoptan posturas forzadas por tiempo prolongado que afecta principalmente la columna vertebral y los miembros superiores, generando sintomatología que incluye dolor, rigidez, limitación en el movimiento, inflamación articular, adormecimiento, entre otros, incrementando los índices de ausentismo y morbilidad de origen osteomuscular. Objetivo: identificar el peligro biomecánico asociado a la aparición de trastornos osteomusculares en los trabajadores de despacho en un ingenio azucarero durante el año 2019-2020. Métodos: Se evaluaron 14 empleados masculinos, con rango de edad entre 35 y 48 años, a los cuales se les aplicó el método Guía del levantamiento de carga del INSHT para determinar el nivel de riesgo biomecánico y se evaluó la percepción de sintomatología a través del Cuestionario Nórdico. Resultados: Se evidenció, nivel de riesgo no tolerable puesto que los trabajadores manipulan cargas que superan de manera excesiva el peso aceptable sugerido para esta labor, y presencia de sintomatología osteomuscular en la región cervical, lumbar, hombros y muñecas. Conclusiones: Los trabajadores presentaron alto nivel de peligro biomecánico, que puede ocasionar enfermedades de origen laboral y por consiguiente, limitación funcional o condición de discapacidad física, si no se toman las medidas correctivas a tiempo, tanto en el peso de la carga como en el desarrollo mismo de la actividad laboral.

Abstract

Journalism was born as the need to inform society about various events that occur around the world. During journalistic coverage, communication workers face certain situations which involve risk and that may attempt their integrity. On March 26, 2018, a newspaper team of Diario El Comercio, consisting of Javier Ortega, Paúl Rivas, and Efraín Segarra, was kidnapped by a group of dissidents called Frente Oliver Sinisterra in the village of Mataje located in San Lorenzo-Esmeraldas canton. The incident occurred when the three members of El Comercio were making a new journalistic coverage about the security of the frontier after the attacks against the Ecuadorian police and military. Three weeks later, the National Government of Ecuador confirmed the murder of the newspaper team. This case is known as 'Nos Faltan 3'. This work presents the result of an in-depth investigation into the role of the journalist in the coverage of risky situations as well as the events about the kidnapping and murder of Javier, Paul, and Efrain exposed in the audiovisual documentary 'Nos Faltan 3' with the intention of generating a reflection on the journalistic work.

Abstract

SAMD9 and SAMD9L (SAMD9/9L) are antiviral factors and tumor suppressors, playing a critical role in innate immune defense against poxviruses and the development of myeloid tumors. SAMD9/9L mutations with a gain-of-function (GoF) in inhibiting cell growth cause multisystem developmental disorders including many pediatric myelodysplastic syndromes. Predicted to be multidomain proteins with an architecture like that of the NOD-like receptors, SAMD9/9L molecular functions and domain structures are largely unknown. Here, we identified a SAMD9/9L effector domain that functions by binding to double-stranded nucleic acids (dsNA) and determined the crystal structure of the domain in complex with DNA. Aided with precise mutations that differentially perturb dsNA binding, we demonstrated that the antiviral and antiproliferative functions of the wild-type and GoF SAMD9/9L variants rely on dsNA binding by the effector domain. Furthermore, we showed that GoF variants inhibit global protein synthesis, reduce translation elongation, and induce proteotoxic stress response, which all require dsNA binding by the effector domain. The identification of the structure and function of a SAMD9/9L effector domain provides a therapeutic target for SAMD9/9Lassociated human diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is an elevated incidence of cases of obesity worldwide. For the first time in human history there are more obese people in the world than underweight people. Therefore, the development of strategies to tackle this condition is of vital importance. The potential role of gut microbiota in obesity has recently emerged as a promising therapeutic tool. This PhD project aimed to contribute to know what the impact of the gut microbiota is on obesity when fermenting different indigestible dietary compounds. Furthermore, it helped to elucidate the potential of modifying an obese gut microbiota into a leaner profile.

Abstract

El presente trabajo incorpora la temática de la perspectiva de los Tribunales de Tratamiento de Adicciones desde un enfoque educativo, en una vinculación directa que se tiene con la estructura social, la escuela como formadora de valores y la parte legal que orienta e interviene en situaciones y circunstancias que le son competentes, como una estrategia de atención a los grupos vulnerables que incurren en las adicciones y en la comisión de delitos no graves. A partir del planteamiento del problema, se derivan los objetivos que guían el desarrollo del trabajo; lo complementa la formulación de hipótesis, cuya afirmación determina la pretensión del presente constructo. De forma sustancial se incluye el texto para dar difusión de la temática y del alcance con el que los Tribunales de Tratamiento de Adicciones cuentan, así como la visualización de la responsabilidad que la educación posee para fortalecer los objetivos del propio programa. Finalmente se incluyen las fuentes de consulta que dan sustento teórico a la redacción del presente trabajo.

37. Black-tailed deer and what they fear: vigilance responses to predator vocalizations as a window into current and historical predation pressure

Abstract

Predation is a potent ecological and evolutionary force, shaping the behavior of animals to minimize risk. Behavior itself can therefore provide clues into the predation pressure experienced by a population. We investigated anti-predator vigilance behavior in a California coastal population of black-tailed deer in response to vocal cues from three predator species of varying current and historical risk: grey wolf, coyote, and red-tail hawk. Vigilance was measured as the proportion of a herd alerting to a call and the length in time of the alert response. For adult deer, we found no difference in the proportion of herd alerting to wolf, coyote, or hawk vocalizations, and only a non-significant trend toward longer alert responses to coyote than to hawk vocalizations. Furthermore, responses by adults did not vary depending on whether fawns were present or absent in the herd. This low degree of discernment in anti-predator vigilance behavior among adults may reflect relaxed selection in the century-plus absence of wolves from the Point Reyes area. Differences in vigilance response by predator species were more pronounced among fawns than adult deer, with fawns showing significantly stronger vigilance responses to red-tail hawk vocalizations than to wolf vocalizations. Taken together, these results suggest that the specific behavior under study-alert response to predator species vocalization-is governed more by current ecological forces than past evolutionary ones. Vigilance responses at both life stages, with fawns showing strong discernment between an abundant avian predator and an extinct canid predator and adults showing little discernment between abundant low-threat species and an extinct high-threat species, seem better to reflect actual risk of predation than a genetic legacy of past predation pressure on the population., CEC Research Volume 1, Issue 1

Abstract

La duplicación cráneo-facial (diprosopus) es el resultado de la forma menos común de gemelos acoplados. La utilización de la ecografía 3D para el diagnóstico de esta patología ha sido reportada. Se presenta el segundo caso de esta patología en Colombia. Caso clínico de hijo de madre de 28 años a quien se le realizó diagnóstico prenatal con ecografía 3D, de duplicación craneofacial y de la columna vertebral. Cariotipo prenatal bandeo G: 46, XX. Al nacimiento se encontró feto de sexo femenino con duplicación craneofacial con la presencia de tres ojos, dos narices y dos bocas, con presencia de columna vertebral duplicada hasta la región cervical con espina bífida a nivel cervical. La utilización de ecografía 3D, permite realizar un diagnóstico oportuno de esta patología, lo que permite un abordaje multidisciplinario de las gestantes. Craniofacial duplication (diprosopus) is the result of the less common form of coupled twins. The use of 3D ultrasound for diagnosis of this disease has been reported. A second case of this disease occurs in Colombia. A clinical case of a son of 28-year-old mother, who underwent prenatal diagnosis with 3D ultrasound of craniofacial duplication and spine.Prenatal karyotype banding G: 46XX. At birth, a female fetus was found with craniofacial duplication, the presence of three eyes, two noses and two mouths, the presence of duplicate backbone up to the cervical region, and spina bifida at the cervical level. Abstract

Here we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to reach a consensus on whether infected and uninfected mosquitoes respond differently to repellents. After screening 2,316 published studies, theses, and conference abstracts, we identified 18 studies that tested whether infection status modulated the effectiveness of repellents. Thirteen of these studies had outcomes available for meta-analysis, and overall, seven repellents were tested (typically DEET with 62% of outcomes), six mosquito species had repellence behaviors measured (typically Aedes aegypti(L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes with 71% of outcomes), and a broad diversity of infections were tested including Sindbis virus (Togaviridae: Alphavirus) (33% of outcomes), Dengue (Flaviviridae: Flavivirus) (31%), malaria (Plasmodium bergheiVincke & Lips (Haemospororida: Plasmodiidae) or P. falciparumWelch (Haemospororida: Plasmodiidae); 25%), Zika (Flaviviridae: Flavivirus) (7%), and microsporidia (4%). Pooling all outcomes with meta-analysis, we found that repellents were less effective against infected mosquitoes—marking an average 62% reduction in protective efficacy relative to uninfected mosquitoes (pooled odds ratio = 0.38, 95% confidence interval = 0.22–0.66; k= 96). Older infected mosquitoes were also more likely to show altered responses and loss of sensitivity to repellents, emphasizing the challenge of distinguishing between age or incubation period effects. Plasmodium- or Dengue-infected mosquitoes also did not show altered responses to repellents; however, Dengue–mosquito systems used inoculation practices that can introduce variability in repellency responses. Given our findings that repellents offer less protection against infected mosquitoes and that these vectors are the most dangerous in terms of disease transmission, then trials on repellent effectiveness should incorporate infected mosquitoes to improve predictability in blocking vector–human contact.

41. Osmoimpregnation of chayote (Sechium edule(Jacq.) Sw.) with piperine using macro and nanometer-sized emulsions

Abstract

This research evaluated the influence of natural emulsifier on the emulsion particle size of the black pepper oleoresin combined with a sucrose solution, and its effects on the kinetics of chayote osmodehydration and the extent of piperine fortification. Macroemulsions with gum arabic (GA) and nanoemulsions with whey protein concentrate (WPC) were prepared in a 50% sucrose solution. The mean particle size and polydispersity index of both sucrose-emulsion solutions were determined using dynamic light scattering, and the kinetics of water loss (), solids gain (), water activity (), and water diffusion coefficients () were obtained during the osmotic processing (25 - 45 °C). With a particle size of 165 nm, the WPC nanoemulsion had a higher viscosity than the GA emulsion, which measured 655 nm making them susceptible to coalescence. Scanning electron micrographs revealed that during osmotic dehydration, the WPC nanoemulsions formed dense layers within the chayote tissue. This resulted in reduced water loss kinetics and diffusivity, particularly at high temperatures. In terms of fortifying chayote with piperine, the use of a macroemulsion resulted in greater rates of impregnation (0.12 mg piperine (g wet solids min)-1) compared to the nanoemulsion, which had rates of 0.04 mg piperine (g wet solids min)-1. After 420 minutes of osmodehydration, it was observed that the GA macroemulsion resulted in higher levels of piperine impregnation than the WPC nanoemulsion. These findings have important implications for successfully fortifying fruits and vegetables with lipophilic bioactive compounds using emulsions in combination with the osmotic dehydration technique.

Abstract

Nuala NíChonchúir is an award-winning and talented poetry and fiction writer with a wide-ranging literary production. She has explored all literary genres and has addressed a great variety of themes, most of them connected with gender issues, male and female troubled relationships, sex, the body, the visual arts, the family and the mother-son/daughter bond, among others. Born in Dublin, in 1970, she holds a BA in Irish from Trinity College Dublin and an MA in Translation Studies (Irish/English) from Dublin City University. She now lives in Co. Galway, where she writes full time and teaches creative writing courses. Nuala NíChonchúir has published one novel, You (2010). Her second, The Closet of Savage Mementos, is due in spring 2014 and her third one, Miss Emily, has just been accepted for publication by Penguin USA and Penguin Canada. NíChonchúir has also authored four short story collections, The Wind Across the Grass (2004), To The World of Men, Welcome (2005), Nude (2009) and Mother America (2012), and has recently published a chapbook of flash fiction, entitled Of Dublin and Other Fictions (2013). Her poetic production includes the titles Molly's Daughter (2003), Tattoo: Tatú (2007), Portrait of the Artist With a Red Car (2009) and The Juno Charm (2011). She has also cowritten a play, Departures, with three other writers and she is now guest editor of the spring 2014 edition of The Stinging Fly. NíChonchúir has been awarded several prizes, among which we could mention the Cúirt New Writing Prize, the RTÉ radios Francis MacManus Award in 2002, for her short story "The Wind Across the Grass", and the 2013 Thresholds International Short Story Feature Writing Competition, for her essay "A Trio of Irish Short Stories". Her third short story collection, Nude, was shortlisted in 2010, followed by her fourth, Mother America, which was also long listed for the Edge Hill Short Story Prize in 2013. I had the pleasure to meet Nuala NíChonchúir in Cáceres last May 2013 during the celebration of the XIII Conference of AEDEI, to which she had been invited as a guest writer, sponsored by the Embassy of Ireland in Madrid. She read from her work and additionally gave an insightful plenary lecture entitled "Choosing YOU - the second-person voice in two Irish novels". The following interview took place in the course of the conference and has been updated in the last months through personal meetings and correspondence on the matter of her subsequent publications and literary success. 47. Conocimiento sobre los predictores de la lectoescritura del docente de nivel inicial y primer grado de dos colegios privados de Lima Metropolitana

Abstract

La presente investigación busca que los docentes de inicial y primer grado tomen conciencia sobre el rol que cumplen como mediadores en el desarrollo de los predictores de la lectoescritura en sus estudiantes. Es decir, este estudio pone énfasis en la importancia del conocimiento, por parte de los docentes, de los predictores de la lectoescritura. El objetivo principal de esta tesis es conocer el nivel de conocimiento de los docentes de inicial y primer grado sobre los predictores de la lectoescritura. Para ello se ha aplicado un cuestionario virtual para obtener esta información. La muestra está conformada por 30 docentes del nivel inicial y primaria de dos colegios particulares de Lima Metropolitana. Al procesar los resultados, se encontró que 53.3% de la muestra obtuvo un nivel bajo en el conocimiento general de los predictores de la lectoescritura. La dimensión de mayor conocimiento fue la de velocidad de denominación con un 76.7% correspondiente a un nivel medio; seguido por la dimensión de conciencia fonológica que también alcanzó el mismo nivel, pero a 40%. De todo lo mencionado, se puede inferir que existe una gran parte de docentes que requieren reactivar y actualizar sus conocimientos sobre el tema., This research seeks to make pre-school and first grade teachers aware of the role they play as mediators in the development of predictors of literacy in their students. In other words, this study emphasizes the importance of knowledge, by teachers, of the predictors of literacy. The main objective of this thesis is to know the level of knowledge of the teachers of initial and first grade about the predictors of literacy. For this, a virtual questionnaire has been applied to obtain this information. The sample is made up of 30 pre-school and primary level teachers from two private schools in Metropolitan Lima. When processing the results, it was found that 53.3% of the sample obtained a low level in the general knowledge of the predictors of literacy. The dimension with the greatest knowledge was the speed of denomination with 76.7% corresponding to a medium level; followed by the dimension of phonological awareness that also reached the same level, but at 40%. From all the aforementioned, it can be inferred that there is a large part of teachers who need to reactivate and update their knowledge on the subject.
