Abstract

Recent publications have argued that there are potentially serious consequences for researchers in recognising distinct genera in the terminal fusarioid clade of the family Nectriaceae. Thus, an alternate hypothesis, namely a very broad concept of the genus Fusarium was proposed. In doing so, however, a significant body of data that supports distinct genera in Nectriaceae based on morphology, biology, and phylogeny is disregarded. A DNA phylogeny based on 19 orthologous protein-coding genes was presented to support a very broad concept of Fusarium at the F1 node in Nectriaceae. Here, we demonstrate that re-analyses of this dataset show that all 19 genes support the F3 node that represents Fusarium sensu stricto as defined by F. sambucinum (sexual morph synonym Gibberella pulicaris). The backbone of the phylogeny is resolved by the concatenated alignment, but only six of the 19 genes fully support the F1 node, representing the broad circumscription of Fusarium. Furthermore, a re-analysis of the concatenated dataset revealed alternate topologies in different phylogenetic algorithms, highlighting the deep divergence and unresolved placement of various Nectriaceae lineages proposed as members of Fusarium. Species of Fusarium s. str. are characterised by Gibberella sexual morphs, asexual morphs with thin- or thick-walled macroconidia that have variously shaped apical and basal cells, and trichothecene mycotoxin production, which separates them from other fusarioid genera. Here we show that the Wollenweber concept of Fusarium presently accounts for 20 segregate genera with clear-cut synapomorphic traits, and that fusarioid macroconidia represent a character that has been gained or lost multiple times throughout Nectriaceae. Thus, the very broad circumscription of Fusarium is blurry and without apparent synapomorphies, and does not include all genera with fusarium-like macroconidia, which are spread throughout Nectriaceae (e.g., Cosmosporella, Macroconia, Microcera). Abstract

A methodology based on the complex spaces analysis, which allows to generalize the study of wave radiation and scattering problems is presented in this paper. From the analytic continuation of functions defined in the real domain (real propagation or scattering spaces) into the complex space (space of complex coordinates), general non homogeneous phase field solutions are obtained for a particular wave problem. From these general solutions, other common solutions obtained under different approximations will arise. This procedure allows to obtain a complete classification of the solutions for the wave problem under analysis, and also to study both the ranges of validity of the different approximations, and the behavior of any particular solution, leading to a more general representation of the problem. In the present paper, the basis for this methodology will be presented in detail, and will be applied to the general complex beams wave propagation problem arising from the analytic continuation from homogeneous cylindrical waves and the corresponding free-space wave equation. As a direct consequence, new magnitudes arise from this formulation. Complex distances, complex angles and other complex magnitudes related to these are the essential ones. All of them are carefully analyzed in this first paper, mapping their meaning into the real propagation space, and emphasizing the interpretation of the results. All these magnitudes will play a fundamental role not only in the analysis of the radiation problem associated to a particular wave problem, but also in the later analysis of scattering problems involving non homogeneous general wave solutions (i.e. scattering problems under complex beams incidence). In this sense, the complex mappings presented in this paper will constitute the fundamental step to: (i) understand the general problem which involves all the particular solutions; (ii) characterize the behavior and ranges of validity of these particular solutions; (iii) understand the meaning of the complex magnitudes, such as complex distances and angles, and the information they can carry out into the real space in later practical problems such as scattering problems, and (iv) extend this methodology to represent other types of wave problems, such as those involving evanescent plane waves, surface waves, etc.

Abstract

Ponencia presentada a la 51 Reunión Científica de la SEEP celebrada en la Escuela Superior de Ingenieros Agrónomos de la Universidad Pública de Navarra entre el 14 y el 18 de mayo de 2012. Se han estudiado los cambios en el pasto (riqueza específica, diversidad, producción, importancia de grupos funcionales) y en el establecimiento de leñosas mediados por cese de aporte de estiércol e incremento de temperatura, en el Parque Natural de Doñana. El estiércol espontáneamente producido se redistribuyó en parcelas (dosis: 0 y 3 200 g MS de estiércol vacuno/m2). La temperatura se incrementó (0,8 ºC) mediante cámaras invernadero. El establecimiento del matorral (Cistus salvifolius), se estudió aportando semillas en subparcelas (10 000 semillas/m2). La riqueza específica y diversidad del pasto no se afectaron significativamente por los tratamientos. La biomasa (72 g/m2-234 g/m2) se incrementó por aumento de temperatura (P=0,006) y estiércol (P=0,002). Distintos grupos funcionales de herbáceas exhibieron diferentes respuestas: las gramíneas se incrementaron sólo por temperatura (P=0,003), las leguminosas se incrementaron sólo por estiércol (P=0,02). La densidad de plántulas de matorral (70 plántulas/m2-1 053 plántulas/m2) solo aumentó en el tratamiento con alta temperatura y sin estiércol (c2=10,45; P=0,015). Se sugiere que los pastos oligotróficos Mediterráneos tras abandono del pastoreo podrían experimentar tasas de cambio mayores de las actuales en el marco del calentamiento global. Changes in grasslands (species richness, diversity, productivity and contribution of different plant functional groups) and shrubs establishment induced by removal of cattle manure and temperature increases have been studied in Doñana Natural Park. Manure spontaneously produced in field was redistributed in experimental plots (0 and 3 200 g MS cattle manure/m2). Air temperature was increased (0.8 °C) by establishing open-top chambers. Shrub (Cistus salvifolius) establishment was studied by providing seeds in sub plots (10 000 seeds/m2). Species richness and diversity were not significantly affected by treatments. Grassland biomass (72 g/m2-234 g/m2) increased by increasing temperature (P=0.006) and manure addition (P=0.002). Different plant functional groups exhibited different responses: Grasses increased by temperature (P=0.003) but not by manure, Legumes only increased by manure (P=0.02). Shrub seedlings densitys only increased significantly (c2=10.45, P=0.15) under high temperature without manure. Results suggest that oligotrophics Mediterranean grassland after grazing abandonment and global warming could experience higher rate of changes than currently observed.
