12. Conyza bonariensis as an alternative host for Colletotrichum species in Argentina.

Abstract

Aims: This study investigated the diversity of Colletotrichum isolates recovered from Conyza bonariensis leaves through the use of morphological characteristics, growth rate, carbon sources utilization and phylogenetic analysis. Methods and Results: In all, 30 Colletotrichum isolates recovered from C. bonariensis leaves showing symptoms of disease were included in the present study. Based on the analysis of morphology and sequences, the isolates were distributed into six Colletotrichum species complexes. The concatenated alignment of GAPDH and ITS sequences showed that 20 out of 30 isolates were included in four species complexes which comprise the most important pathogens causing anthracnose in soybean or anthracnose and stalk rot in maize: C. truncatum, C. orchidearum, C. gloeosporioides and C. graminicola. The remaining 10 isolates were included in the C. boninense and C. destructivum species complexes or could not be assigned to any complex with the available information. Conclusion: Weeds belonging to genus Conyza are host to soybean and maize potential pathogenic species of Colletotrichum and could have a role as inoculum reservoir for cross contamination in the agroecosystem. Significance and Impact of the Study: The combined use of morphological, kinetics and physiological parameters of growth and phylogenetic analysis in Colletotrichum isolates from Conyza leaves allowed the detection of species complexes previously not identified in Argentina. Abstract

Durante la atención brindada a pacientes jóvenes y adultos que requieren prótesis dentales fijas, dentro del ámbito del Curso de Rehabilitación Oral que se dicta desde hace 10 años en el Circulo Odontológico de Córdoba, existe una carencia de información, por parte de los pacientes que concurren, respecto del conocimiento necesario para el mantenimiento de su prótesis dentales fija, con el consiguiente deterioro de la misma y la pérdida de salud bucal, acarrear consecuencia en la salud general. Nuestra inquietud, conforme lo manifestado por los mismos pacientes, se centra en la ausencia de elementos informativos y formativos que posibiliten el conocimiento destinados a orientar en este sector específico de la salud, con la necesidad de construir mecanismos de difusión, promoción, prevención de patologías bucales con el consiguiente mantenimiento de la salud de quienes son portadores de Prótesis Dentales Fijas. http://revistas.unc.edu.ar/index.php/HUELLAS/article/view/4714/4518 publishedVersion Fil: Giménez, Enrique. 18. Evaluación del uso de los cementos de ionómetros vítreos en la práctica diaria

Abstract

Los Cementos de ionómeros vítreos (CIV) son usados como biomateriales por sus amplias aplicaciones clínicas y múltiples ventajas. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron determinar si los profesionales utilizan o no en la práctica diaria los cementos de ionómeros vítreos y tratar de identificar el porqué, como así también validar o innovar la metodología en la enseñanza de este material, en la Cátedra de Operatoria I “B”. Materiales y Métodos: Los datos se obtuvieron de un cuestionario anónimo autoadministrado, con preguntas cerradas en una muestra aleatoria de 148 odontólogos, con un período promedio de diez años de egresado, pertenecientes al padrón de prestadores del Círculo Odontológico de Córdoba. Resultados: El 80,41 % de los encuestados afirmaron que utilizan el CIV. El 19,59 % que no lo usa opina que es costoso y que algunas obras sociales no lo reconocen (89,66%). El 56,08 % refiere que los aplica como base o relleno y que prefiere como mecanismo de endurecimiento la fotopolimerización (56,76%). Al valorar las ventajas el 53,38 % destacó la liberación de fluoruro y propiedades físico-mecánicas similares a la dentina. Como desventaja el 54,73 % destacó la necesidad de proporcionarlo adecuadamente y el costo elevado. Para la compra del producto, el criterio de selección es el consejo del vendedor y el costo material (54,73%). 24. Late Bajocian bioevents of ammonoid immigration and colonization in the Arequipa Basin (Pumani River area, Ayacucho, southern Peru).

Abstract

Strata of the Socosani Formation in the Pucayacu and Pumani sections (Ayacucho Department, Peru), along several kilometres, have yielded Upper Bajocian ammonoid fossil-assemblages characterized by the occurrence of juvenile individuals belonging to endemic or pandemic taxa, such as Megasphaeroceras and Spiroceras respectively. In addition, certain Bajocian taxa relatively common in the Mediterranean-Caucasian Subrealm, but very scarce in the Eastern Pacific Subrealm, such as the strigoceratid Cadomoceras and the phylloceratid Adabofoloceras, occur in this area. These Late Bajocian bioevents of regional appearance of immigrant ammonoids and even sustained colonization should be associated with an episode of maximum deepening, maximum relative sea-level rise and highest oceanic accessibility of a Bajocian-Bathonian deepening/shallowing palaeoenvironmental cycle in the Arequipa Basin, during the Late Bajocian Niortense Biochron.

Abstract

We have studied the effect of N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)retinamide on either malignant human leukaemia cells or normal cells and investigated its mechanism of action. We demonstrate that 4HPR induces reactive oxygen species increase on mitochondria at a target between mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I and II. Such oxidative stress causes cardiolipin peroxidation which in turn allows cytochrome c release to cytosol, caspase-3 activation and therefore apoptotic consumption. Moreover, this apoptotic pathway seems to be bcl-2/bax independent and count only on malignant cells but not normal nor activated lymphocytes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Eighteen cases of amelia in the Spanish Collaborative Study of Congenital Malformations (ECEMC) were analyzed epidemiologically. Prevalence at birth was 0.15 per 10,000 newborn infants, which is not different from that reported by other authors. Affected females outnumbered males. When compared with the control group, a lower birth weight, shorter gestation, lower placental weight, greater frequency of single umbilical artery, noncephalic presentation at birth, and more frequent maternal vaginal bleeding were observed in amelia cases. There were no significant variations of parental age. None of these patients was exposed to known teratogens, apart from 1 born to a diabetic mother; 3 patients had a genetic condition. Comparison of these variables with other studies is difficult because there is only one study that specifically analyzed amelia. Our data together with previous observations suggest that the genetic basis of amelia might be more important than has been considered previously. Am. J. Med.
