Abstract

Quantum computing represents a revolutionary computational paradigm with the potential to address challenges beyond classical computers' capabilities. The development of robust quantum software is indispensable to unlock the full potential of quantum computing. Like classical software, quantum software is expected to be complex and extensive, needing the establishment of a specialized field known as Quantum Software Engineering. Recognizing the regional focus on Latin America within this special issue, we have boarded on an in-depth inquiry encompassing a systematic mapping study of existing literature and a comprehensive survey of experts in the field. This rigorous research effort aims to illuminate the current landscape of Quantum Software Engineering initiatives undertaken by universities, research institutes, and companies across Latin America. This exhaustive study aims to provide information on the progress, challenges, and opportunities in Quantum Software Engineering in the Latin American context. 7. Resonant and Non-Resonant Impurity States Related to GaAs/AlGaAs Quantum Well Sub-Bands.

Abstract

The energy positions and wave function shapes of the ground and excited states of impurities, including resonance states, are studied using the expansion of the impurity wave function in basis functions. The structures under study are rectangular GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells with four different widths. In all cases, the impurity binding energy (relative to the corresponding sub-band) has a maximum at or near the center of the quantum well, decreases as the heterointerface is approached, and apparently has a limit of 0 if the impurity moves deeper into the barrier. If the impurity moves away from the center of the quantum well, then the "center of mass" of the electron charge of non-resonant impurity states follows the impurity atom, and the "center of mass" of the electron charge of the resonant impurity states moves away from it. The effect is more pronounced for the ground and first resonance states for wider quantum wells, and the shifts reach a maximum when the impurity atom is positioned near the midpoint of the path between the quantum well center and the heterointerface. Abstract

Intravesical local anesthetics, in a wide variety of combinations, are increasingly used to treat patients with interstitial cystitis-bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). Lidocaine has demonstrated properties that block the neuroinflammatory cycle associated with IC/BPS at many of the interactive points in this cycle. Intravesical lidocaine has been shown to assist in identifying the bladder as the source of pain in patients with pelvic pain. An appreciation of these anti-inflammatory effects and of the pharmacokinetics of intravesical lidocaine in patients with IC/BPS could lead to a safe and effective diagnosis and treatment for an as yet unidentified subset of patients in the IC/BPS spectrum.

18. A Computational Analysis of Galactic Exploration with Space Probes: Implications for the Fermi Paradox

Abstract

Temporal explanations to the Fermi paradox state that the vast scale of the galaxy diminishes the chances of establishing contact with an extraterrestrial technological civilization (ETC) within a certain time window. This argument is tackled in this work in the context of exploration probes, whose propagation can be faster than that of a colonization wavefront. Extensive computational simulations have been done to build a numerical model of the dynamics of the exploration. A probabilistic analysis is subsequently conducted in order to obtain bounds on the number of ETCs that may be exploring the galaxy without establishing contact with Earth, depending on factors such as the number of probes they use, their lifetime and whether they leave some long-term imprint on explored systems or not. The results indicate that it is unlikely that more than ~10^2-10^3 ETCs are exploring the galaxy in a given Myr, if their probes have a lifetime of 50 Myr and contact evidence lasts for 1 Myr. This bound goes down to ~10 if contact evidence lasts for 100 Myr, and is also shown to be inversely proportional to the lifetime of probes. These results are interpreted in light of the Fermi paradox and are compatible with non-stationary astrobiological models in which a few ETCs have gradually appeared in the Fermi-Hart timescale., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

The authors present details of a research-based course in development economics taught at a private liberal arts college. There were three key elements in this class: teaching of applied econometrics, group presentations reviewing published and working papers in development economics, and using concepts taught in class to write an original research paper. The project required using econometric analyses on an existing data set that was available online to answer a question in development economics. The authors illustrate how the three elements of the class complemented each other and provide a case study as an example.

Abstract

We investigate the electronic properties of a semiconductor quantum ring with an elliptical shape and non-uniform height, allowing for distributed quantum-dot-like bulges along its perimeter. The adiabatic approximation and the finite element method are combined to calculate the allowed electron states in the structure under the effective mass approximation, considering the contributions from Rashba and Dresselahaus spin–orbit interactions and the Zeeman effect in the presence of an applied magnetic field. We discuss the features of the calculated spectra for two different ring geometries: a symmetric one with four dot-like bulges, and an asymmetric one with three hilled protuberances. The information about those states allows us to evaluate the linear optical absorption response associated with interlevel transitions between the ground and lowest excited states. This phenomenon takes place at resonant energies of only a few milielectronvolts. It is observed that spin–orbit interactions tend to quench this response under zero-field conditions in the case of symmetric confinement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We theoretically investigate the properties of an electron energy spectrum in a double GaAs-Al0.3Ga0.7As quantum ring by using the effective mass and adiabatic approximations, together with a realistic description of the confining potential profile, which is assumed to be deformed due to the application of an intense nonresonant laser field. The effects of the applied magnetic field and spin-orbit interaction are included. We discuss the features of the lowest confined energy levels under a variation of magnetic field strengths and intense laser parameters. The influence of this external probe on the linear optical absorption response associated with interlevel transitions is analyzed by considering both the presence and absence of spin-orbit effects. Abstract

The study of molecular nanoelectronic devices has recently gained significant interest, especially their potential use as functional junctions of molecular wires. Aromatic systems with π -conjugated bonds within their chemical backbones, such as catechol, have attracted particular attention in this area. In this work, we focused on calculating and determining catechol's electrical and thermal transport properties using the theoretical method of Green's functions renormalized in a real space domain within a framework of tight-binding approximation to the first neighbors. Thus, we studied two theoretical models of catechol as a function of its geometry, obtaining striking variations in the profiles of electrical and thermal conductance, the Seebeck coefficient, and the figure of merit. The analyses of the results suggest the potential application of catechol as a likely conductive and thermoelectric molecule serving as a novel material to use in molecular electronic devices. Abstract

Taking into consideration the research that has been conducted on the optical and electrical properties of molecular systems, especially the good thermoelectric energy conversion at a nanometric scale that such systems have presented, here we present a new alternative by using a particular diphenyl-ether molecule as a functional device. Such a molecular system is modeled as a planar segment coupled to two electrodes in the first-neighbor approximation within a tight-binding Hamiltonian. We study the electrical and thermal properties of diphenyl-ether molecules such as the electric current, electrical and thermal conductance, Seebeck coefficient, and figure of merit, in the strong and weak coupling regimes, considering different structural configurations and variations with temperature. Our results could be valuable for laboratory applications and/or verification since we characterize the diphenyl-ether molecule as a semiconductor device for different structural models.
