- Abstract
The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

The Rice Sheath Mite, Steneotarsonemus spinki Smiley (Acari: Tarsonemidae) is a pest of Kharif Rice (wet rice) of West Bengal, causing losses every year. It initially infests leaf sheaths, moving later onto the grains. It is not known how the mite survives in the off season, which is important for devising management strategies. The present investigation was conducted to find out the sources of infestation of S. spinki. It was concentrated on four types of substrates: rice associated weeds, soil, rice grains of different ages (before and after harvesting) and rice stubbles. Mites detected in any of those possible sources were slide mounted in modified Berlese medium and examined under phase and differential interference contrast microscope for identification. Tarsonemid mites were found on some grassy weeds, but not Steneotarsonemus spinki Smiley. No tarsonemid mite was found in soil samples from infested fields. Steneotarsonemus spinki was found on rice grains of different ages and in stubbles. Hence, both rice grains and rice stubbles could be important sources of infestation of S. spinki to new plants at each season. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Whereas endosymbiont-induced incompatibility is known to occur in various arthropod taxa, such as spider mites, insects and isopods, it has been rarely reported in plant-inhabiting predatory mites (Acari: Phytoseiidae). Recent cross-breeding studies with the phytoseiid mite Neoseiulus paspalivorus De Leon revealed a complete post-mating reproductive isolation between specimens collected from three geographic origins-Northeast Brazil (South America), Benin and Ghana (West Africa)-even though they are morphologically similar. We carried out a study to assess to what extent these populations exhibit genetic differences and whether endosymbionts are involved in the incompatibility. First, we used the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene to assess genetic diversity among the three populations. Second, we used a PCR-based method to check for the presence of Wolbachia and/or Cardinium in these populations, and we determined their phylogenetic relationships using specific primers for Wolbachia and Cardinium 16S rDNA genes. Third, we also conducted a test using an antibiotic (tetracycline) in an attempt to eliminate the symbionts and evaluate their effects on the reproductive compatibility of their host. Based on the DNA sequences of their COI genes, specimens of the three populations appear to be genetically similar. However, the 16S rDNA gene sequences of their associated endosymbionts differed among the three populations: the Benin and Brazil populations harbour different strains of Wolbachia symbionts, whereas the Ghana population harbours Cardinium symbionts. In response to antibiotic treatment females of each of the three populations became incompatible with untreated males of their own population, similar to that observed in crossings between females from one geographic population and males from another. Compatibility was restored in crosses involving uninfected Brazil females and uninfected Benin males, whereas the reciprocal crosses remained incompatible. Cardinium symbionts seem to be essential for oviposition in the Ghana population. It is concluded that their associated bacterial symbionts are the cause of the post-mating reproductive isolation previously observed among the three geographic populations. This insight is relevant to biological control of coconut mites for which N. paspalivorus is an effective predator, because introducing one geographic strain into the population of another (e.g. in field releases or mass cultures) may cause population growth depression.

In an effort to understand the fauna of edaphic mites of the genus Lasioseius Berlese (Blattisociidae) from Brazil, a new species was found and it is here described as Lasioseius biota Barros & Castilho sp. nov. It is rather unusual among the Lasioseius species for having dorsal setae mostly bacillate or saber- to leaf-shapped. The other species considered in this paper is Lasioseius meridionalis Chant, morphologically known only from the original description, based solely on the holotype female (from USA). Information resulting from the reexamination of the holotype and on females collected from Brazil is provided. This is the first record of this species in Brazil. With this publication, the total number of Lasioseius species reported from Brazil adds to 19 and a key for the separation of females of these species is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Damages produced by eriophyid mites to Olea europaea subsp. europaea cv. arauco have been known for many years. In a previous publication, the presence of Aceria oleae (Nalepa) and Oxycenus maxwelli, (Keifer) in Argentina was reported, but the species was not definitively identified. In the past five years, damage caused by this mite to leaves, flowers and fruits in many production areas was very high, leading to the need for further investigations about this mite, the most numerous mite species on this plant in Argentina. The present paper is divided in three parts: a) a morphological characterization of A. oleae based on specimens collected in Argentina, with the use of SEM; b) a study of its life cycle; and c) an illustration of its damage to leaves and fruits. The morphological study led to the confirmation of the identity of the species and to the determination of morphological aspects not previously mentioned in the literature. Life cycle and damage were observed to be similar to what has been previously mentioned in the literature for the same mite in other countries.

Xenotarsonemus spiniphorus Lofego, Moraes & Ochoa Xenotarsonemus spiniphorus Lofego, Moraes & Ochoa, 2007: 11. Specimens examined: Cananéia (SP): Gomidesia sp., VII-2012 (19 ♀, 1 ♂); Blefarocalix salicifolium, I-2013 (2 ♀). Previous reports: São Paulo —Natural ecosystems (Cerrado): Campomanesia pubescens and Myrcia venulosa (Lofego et al. 2007); Natural ecosystems (Atlantic Forest): Trichillia casaretti (Demite et al. 2013) and on plant not mentioned (Demite et al. 2012). Among the 14 species nominally determined in this study, seven of these (F. pulvirosus, M, megassolenidii, T. bilobatus, T. confusus, X. brachytegula, X. cerrado and X. spniphorus) were also found in the Cerrado biome (Lofego & Moraes, 2006; Demite et al. 2009; Rezende et al. 2014). This similarity between the tarsonemids fauna in these two biomes is an unexpected fact, since they are structurally quite different biomes; the Atlantic Forest is a tropical forest, and the Cerrado is a savanna (IBGE 2012). The remaining vegetation of the Atlantic Forest shelters a great diversity of tarsonemids, many still new to science. In the present study, the sampling was only a small portion of the entire diversity of the Atlantic Forest (eight sampling areas, with only five plant species from the same family were sampled at each area) and a considerable richness of tarsonemids species was found. In this study, of the identified species, six (40%) were unknown until recently to science (D. esalqi, K. ochoai, M. caissara, O. dux, X. quiriri, X. scorpius) (Lofego et al. 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, Rezende et al. 2015b), in addition to the one described here (Tarsonemus conduru Lofego & Cavalcante sp. nov.). A great richness of tarsonemid was also recorded in the Atlantic Forest biome by Demite et al. (2012), in a more restricted area in the interior of the São Paulo state, but with a larger sampling, where 100 plant species from several botanical families were collected in 18 areas. In that study, Tarsonemidae was the second family with the highest richness (47 species). The data from the present study reveal the impressive richness of the family Tarsonemidae in the Atlantic Forest; and indicate how much further efforts are needed to better understand the diversity in this hotspot., Published as part of Demite, Peterson R., Cavalcante, Ana C. Tarsonemus conduru Lofego & Cavalcante sp. nov. (Figures 2–8) Diagnosis: Female—Gnatosomal capsule wider than long; pharynx fusiform. Median lobes on the posterior margin of the prodorsal shield, setae v1, sc2 and c2 with similar length, varying between 10–16 μm; short setae on shields C, D, EF and H (less than 12 μm). Prosternal apodeme conspicuous, almost reaching sejugal apodeme but nor fused with it. Sejugal apodeme arched, conspicuous in most of its extension but diffuse in the middle. Poststernal apodeme conspicuous bifurcated anteriorly. Specimens examined: Holotype ♀: Serra do Conduru, Uruçuca, Bahia state, Brazil (14°29’S; 39°08’W), on Marlierea obversa D. Legrand (Myrtaceae), 5 May 2012, deposited at Departamento de Zoologia e Botânica, Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP), São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo state, Brazil. Paratypes: 1 ♀: same locality and date as holotype, on Myrciaria sp. Description of female: three specimens measured Gnathosoma (Figure 3): subquadrangular in dorsal view, length 22 23 (22–25); maximum width 28 29 (28–30), dorsal apodeme distinct. Setae dgs 10 10 and vgs 5 5 (5–6) smooth; seta pp not observed. Palpus short, with one visible small subterminal setae and a terminal cone-shaped structure. Pharynx fusiform, 13 12 (12–13) long and 6 5 (5–6) wide at widest region. Idiosoma (Figures 3 and 4): length 145 148 (145–150), width at level of c1 98 101 (98–106); prodorsal shield covering at least three quarters of the gnathosoma. Stigma on lateral of prodorsal shield, prominent, posterolaterad of v1. Posteromedian margin of prodorsal shield with five subcircular lobes. Lengths of the setae: v1 15 14 (12–16), sc1 12 12 (11–12), sc2 12 12 (10–13), c1 5 5, c2 12 12 (11–14), d 7 7 (7–8), e 7 9 (9–10), f 10 11 (10–12), h 9 10 (9–11). Setae v1, sc2, c1, c2, d, e; f and h serrate; all these setiform; sc1 capitate and with tiny spines. Seta ps 2 2. Prosternal apodeme (appr) conspicuous, almost reaching sejugal apodeme but nor fused with it. Apodeme 1 conspicuous, fused to anterior end of prosternal apodeme, extending diagonally to base of anterior margin of trochanter I. Apodeme 2 almost reaching prosternal apodeme. Sejugal apodeme (apsej) arched, conspicuous in most of its extension but diffuse in the middle. Apodeme 3 extending diagonally from proximity of insertion of seta 3a to anterior margin of trochanter III; apodeme 4 (ap4) extending diagonally from the middle of anterior half of the poststernal apodeme (appo) to insertion of seta 3b. Proximal half of apodeme 4 diffused while the distal half conspicuous. Poststernal apodeme conspicuous, bifurcated anteriorly. Ventral plates slightly punctate. Tegula rounded, 4 4 (3–5) long and 9 9 (8–9) wide. All ventral setae smooth. Legs (Figures 5–8): lengths (femur to tarsus): leg I 37 38 (37–38), leg II 42 40 (37–42), leg III 40 41 (39–44), leg IV 25 26 (25–27). Number of setae (solenidia in parentheses) on femur, genu, tibia and tarsus, respectively: leg I: 4-4-6(2)+8(1), leg II: 3-3-4-6(1), leg III: 1+3-4-4. Tarsal solenidion ω of tibiotarsus I 5 6 (5–7), stout, slightly narrower near base. Sensory cluster of tibia I complete, solenidion φ1 2 2, capitate; φ2 2 2, clavate; famulus k 3 3 (3–4), all those inserted at approximately the same level. Seta d of tibia I 30 35 (30–40), slightly serrate. Solenidion ω of tarsus II proximal, 4 4 (4–5), stout, narrower basally; seta pl´´ 3 3 (3–4), spine-like. Seta d of tibia II 7 7 (7–8), smooth. Femorogenu IV 18 20 (18–21); tibiotarsus IV 6 6. Length of leg IV setae: v´F 5 6 (5–6), v´G 7 7, v´Ti 17 20 (17–22) and tc´´ 19 21 (19–23); setae v´F, v´G and tc´´ smooth; v´Ti serrate. Differential diagnosis: The new species resembles Tarsonemus stammeri Schaarschmidt in having median lobes on the posterior margin of the prodorsal shield and short setae on shields C, D, EF and H (less than 20 µm). However, that species differs from the new species here described by the elongate pharynx, sejugal apodeme well sclerotized throughout, prosternal apodema sclerotized only anteriad of apodeme 2, and dorsal seta d about 20 μm long. Remarks: Nothing is known about the biology or ecology of this new species. All specimens collected by C.A. Ortega-Ojeda. Supplementary description. Adult female (n = 12) (Figs 17���18). Gnathosoma. Measurements of the specimens collected for the cheliceral digits, corniculi, hypostomal and subcapitular setae are within the respective ranges mentioned in the original description. Dorsal idiosoma. Dorsal shield about 20% shorter and narrower than reported in the original description of the species. Setal measurements were always within the respective ranges mentioned in the original description. Ventral idiosoma. Measurements of tritosternum, ventral shields and setae compatible with measurements given in the original description, overlapping the corresponding ranges. Spermatheca. Phytoseiid-type, clearly distinguishable as a sclerotised, elongated cup-shaped structure projecting from the posterior external margin of the base of the coxa IV, ending in a membranous saccular structure. Legs. Lengths and setation very similar to what were reported in the original description. Leg IV with six macrosetae: three on genu [ad1 63 (60-65), ad2 41 (36-44) and pd1 55 (52-57)]; two on tibia [ad1 41 (34-44) and pd1 54 (52-57)] and on one on basitarsus [pd3 64 (62-65)]. Remarks. This is the first record of this species outside of Brazil. The specimens collected from Ecuador fit well the description provided by Castilho et al. (2012b), based on females from Brazil. Given the very satisfactory original description of this species, new illustrations are not presented in this paper, except for the spermatheca and leg IV macrosetae. Gamasiphis vikkiae Melo-Molina & Santos n. sp. Type material. Holotype female: ECUADOR: Esmeraldas (Coast region): La Independencia (0°06’29.8”N 79°21’16.9”W; 164 m), from soil at the base of Piper peltatum on 26 September 2019. Paratypes: ECUADOR: Napo (Amazon region): one female, Tena (0°53’49.4”S 77°48’08.0”W; 608 m), from soil at the base of Musa paradisiaca on 4 August 2019; two females, Tena (0°53’49.7”S 77°48’07.5”W; 611 m), from soil at the base of Citrus limon on 4 August 2019; one female, Tena (0°53’49.4”S 77°48’06.5”W; 610 m) from soil at the base of Saccharum officinarum on 4 August 2019; one female, Tena (0°19’36.7”S 76°53’17.5”W; 607 m) from soil at the base of Renealmia sessilifolia on 26 February 2018. All specimens collected by C.A. Ortega-Ojeda. Holotype deposited at INABIO, three paratype at LEA-UCE and two paratypes at ESALQ / USP. Diagnosis (adult female). Anteromedial extension of epistome aciculate; setae j2, j3, j4, j5, z3 and Z1 at least as long as distance to the base of the respective subsequent setae; with two pairs of presternal platelets; seta Zv2 as long as distance to base of Zv3; seta Jv5 about in level with anterior margin of anal opening and about four times as long as para-anal seta; post-anal seta about 4.5 times as long as para-anal setae. Description. Adult female (n = 6) (Figs 1–8). Gnathosoma. Fixed cheliceral digit 44 (42–47) long, with 7–8 teeth in addition to the apical hook and the aciculate pilus dentilis (Fig. 1); movable cheliceral digit 47 (44–49) long, with four teeth in addition to the apical hook; chelicera with antiaxial and dorsal lyrifissures as well as dorsal seta distinct; arthrodial process shaped as a short coronet-shaped fringe. Palp apotele 3-tined. Epistome 3-tined, with an anteromedian extension longer than others, all three aciculate (Fig. 2). Deutosternum with indistinct margins, with seven transverse denticulate lines (Fig. 3); anteriormost shaped as an inverted “V”, first to fourth lines with very small teeth, and fifth to seventh multidenticulate; lines fourth to sixth U-shaped. Internal malae fimbriate laterally. Corniculi horn-shaped 26 (25–27) long, 16 (15–16) wide at the widest point; seta h3 directly posterior to h1 and slightly anterior and medial to h2. Measurements of setae: h1 21 (20–22), h2 18 (17–20), h3 21 (18–22), sc 18 (17–20); all setae aciculate. Dorsal idiosoma (Fig. 4). Dorsal shield 437 (419–455) long, 269 (265–276) wide (between s6 and r6), covering totally the idiosoma. Podonotal region smooth anteriad of z4, imbricate behind; with 22 pairs of setae (r1 and r2 absent; other r setae visible in ventral view); with seven pairs of lyrifissures and four pairs of pores. Opisthonotal region imbricate anteriad of J4, smooth behind; with 14 pairs of setae (J1 and all R setae absent); S2 and S 5 visible in ventral view; with nine pairs of distinguishable lyrifissures and two pairs of distinguishable pores. Measurements of setae: j1 13 (12–14), j2 34 (33–35), j3 33 (30–36), j4 34 (31–35), j5 34 (32–35), j6 34 (33–35), z1 15 (14–15), z2 30 (28–32), z3 34 (33–35), z4 35 (34–36), z5 28 (28–30), z6 37 (35–40), s1 14 (12–15), s2 14 (13–15), s3 33 (30–35), s4 36 (35–37), s5 36 (35–37), s6 33 (32–35), r3 23 (20–25), r4 12 (10–15), r5 11 (8–13), r6 28 (25–31), J2 20 (16–24), J3 19 (16–21), J4 11 (10–11), J5 7 (6–7), Z1 37 (36–40), Z2 19 (17–21), Z3 21 (20–21), Z4 10, Z5 69 (66–71), S1 7, S2 8 (7–9), S3 7, S4 11 (10–11), S5 17 (16–19); all setae aciculate. Ventral idiosoma (Fig. 5). Base of tritosternum 19 (18–21) long and approximately 13 wide basally (Fig. 6); laciniae 65 (58–73) long, pilose, separated for about 95% of their total length. With two pairs of presternal platelets. Sternal shield reticulate; 73 (70–75) long at midline and 69 (65–75) wide at median level of coxae II; with four pairs of setae (st1–st4), st3 inserted in line and medial to st2, and four pairs of lyrifissures. Genital shield scantly reticulate, 70 (68–73) long and 70 (68–72) wide at the widest level; bearing st 5, distance st5–st5 47 (46–49), anterior margin convex and posterior margin truncate. Ventrianal shield imbricate anteriorly to Zv3 and apparently smooth posteriorly; 205 (182–221) long at midline (from anterior margin to postanal seta), 176 (148–192) wide at widest point (between Jv2 and Zv2); with eight pairs of setae (Jv1–Jv5, Zv1–Zv3) in addition to circumanal setae and with four pairs of distinguishable lyrifissures. Peritreme extending to region between coxae I and II. Measurements of setae: st1 24 (23–25), st2 24 (23–27), st3 13 (13–14), st4 20 (20–21), st5 19 (18–20), Jv1 25, Jv2 25 (23–27), Jv3 26 (25–26), Jv4 33 (31–36), Jv5 46 (44–48), Zv1 32 (29–34), Zv2 35 (34–36), Zv3 25 (24–25), para-anal 13 (12–14), post-anal 53 (50–54); all setae aciculate. Spermatheca (Fig. 7). Phytoseiid-type. Spermathecal apparatus distinguishable as a membranous tubular structure, extending medially from base of coxa IV. Legs. Lengths: I: 352 (330–364); II: 277 (250–296); III: 242 (230–247); IV: 339 (320–351). Numbers of setae on segments of legs I–IV: coxa: 2, 2, 2, 1; trochanter: 6, 5, 5, 5; femur: 13, 11, 6, 6; genu: 13, 11, 9, 8; tibia: 14, 10, 8, 9; tarsus II–IV: 18, 18, 17. Leg IV with four macrosetae: two on genu [ad2 42 (41–42) and pd1 39 (38–39)], one on tibia [pd1 42 (40–42)] and one on basitarsus [pd3 46 (44–46)] (Fig. 8). All legs with pretarsi, with elongate ambulacral stalk and a pair of strongly sclerotised claws. Etymology. The species is named in honor of the daughter of the first author, Victoria Eugenia Martinez (Vikki). Remarks. Gamasiphis vikkiae Melo-Molina & Santos n. sp. is most similar to G. adanalis Karg, 1990, but the latter has 20 pairs of setae on the podonotal region (s1 absent and only three pairs of r setae); 12 pairs of setae on the opisthonotal region; the dorsal setae ranging between 15-20 long; setae j2, j3, j4, j5, z3 and Z1 at most 0.6 times as long as distance to the base of the respective subsequent setae. In the key to Gamasiphis species provided by Castilho et al. (2012b), couplet 52 (page 1993) would require the following adjustment for inclusion of this new species: 52.
